Odds ‘N Bods

Frenchies Forum, or the British Discotheque Convention as most people are not calling it, pulls top jocks and industry leaders to Camberley Cambridge Hotel on Tuesday (2) for an evening’s discussion and entertainment . . . Kool & The Gang ‘Ladies’ Night’ 12in is due next week, with Teddy Pendergrass ‘Do Me’, Melba Moore ‘Burn’, Risco Connection ‘Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now’ on 12in the following week and Isley Bros ‘It’s A Disco Night’, Force ‘Dirty Dog’ after that, Fat Larry’s Band ‘Center City’ 12in remix version, highly prized as you know, will finally be on FLB’s next LP . . . Herb Alpert’s ‘Rise’ does turn out to be on 33 1/3 rpm UK 12in, so speed-spins ARE possible still (though not necessarily recommended)! . . . Three Degrees ‘Jump The Gun’ (Ariola AROC 183), Barbra Streisand ‘The Main Event / Fight’ (CBS 12-7714), Inner Circle ‘We ‘A’ Rockers’ (Island 12XWIP 6498) are now on 12in . . . Jupiter Beyond ‘The River Drive’ is causing concern for record companies as not only Pye but also EMI LRD (and who else?) were confident they had the UK rights and were awaiting signed contracts! . . . Ronnie Milsap, the blind Country star, began the mid-‘60s as a totally convincing soul singer on Scepter, cutting the original ‘Let’s Go Get Stoned’ and many early Ashford & Simpson songs – and he’s now returned with a thudding slow funky 104bpm 12in bumper currently circulating on mystery white label promo . . . Blondie’s ABBA-esque ‘Dreaming’ clocks in at about 160bpm, if you’re interested . . . Ilford Room At The Top’s 9th Anniversary Fancy Dress Gala was won by Tony Smith who brilliantly dressed as an old man carrying a dustbin – except the old man was a dummy from the waist up, Tony’s upper half being hidden in the bin! . . . John Lewis says that if Joseph Johnstone could afford the petrol (or bus fare?) to get the 12 miles from Worthing to Brighton he’d find imports aplenty, and a lot more besides! . . . Russell Burtonshaw (Retford MAYC) reports the “rock” is already established in North Notts – accounting for his high chart placing of Gary Numan and Flying Lizards, who so far are preferred to Edwin Starr! . . . Britain’s provinces will capitulate in the end, the “rock” could be a new Twist! . . . Kev Hill (Brentwood) turns 21 on October 6th, and sent me a quid with which to drink his health (hic!), sho apart from shaying thanksh, I’m now open to similar bribes in return for birthday boy announcements (and 21 seems to be a popular age, huh, Paul & Steve?) . . . Ho ho ho!

UK Newies

STERLING: ‘Roll-Her, Skater’ (Motown 12TMG 1162)
Happily rattling and tootling Brian Holland-produced “rock” 12in with usefully choppable butch “one two three four DANCE, rock, freak – skate, dance, clap your hands” bits.

DIANA ROSS: ‘No One Gets The Prize’ (Motown 12TMG 1160) (BNDA debut 6/23/79)
‘Love Hangover’-style slow starting 117-119bpm 12in, better than ‘The Boss’.

FERN KINNEY: ‘Groove Me’ (WEA 79101) (BNDA debut 8/4/79)
US smash synthetically burbling 109bpm 7in revival of King Floyd’s 1970 funker, seen by some as a new ‘Ring My Bell’.

SPYRO GYRA: ‘Shaker Song’ (Infinity INFT 117)
Originally hot on import last year, this pleasantly inconsequential little 95/48-94/47bpm 12in sax tootler should now hit hard. Specialist ‘Song For Lorraine’ 112bpm jazz samba flip.

DYNASTY: ‘I Don’t Want To Be A Freak (But I Can’t Help Myself)’ (Solar FC 1694) (BNDA debut 9/22/79)
Chart-bound jittery 119bpm “rock” stamper with catchy clapping and simple singing, already a big seller on import.

RAY ANTHONY: ‘Cosmopolitan London’ (Vasko VSK 09)
Chix-chanted title line intro a sax-squawked heavy slow 103-108bpm 12in jazz-funk reggae instrumental jogger. B-side of Ray Williams’s vocal version.

TOM BROWNE: ‘Browne Sugar’ LP (Arista GRP SPART 1103)
Jazz trumpeter’s standout is the gorgeous 38bpm smooching of ‘The Closer I Get To You’ while the gently meandering 46/98bpm ‘Herbal Scent’ is more specialist and the 120bpm ‘What’s Going On’ and 117bpm ‘Throw Down’ are already on 12in.

ADRENALIN: ‘Feel The Real’ (Hithouse 12HIT 2)
British-made 121bpm 12in cover of David Bendeth’s pop hit is technically less good but adds a slight reggae flavour and instrumental B-side making it preferable for some snobbish jazz-funk fans.

STANLEY CLARKE: ‘Together Again’ (Epic EPC 7920)
Happily clapping and snapping melodic 129-136bpm jazz instrumental, on UK 7in instead of the ‘Just A Feeling’ US 12in.

VARIOUS: ‘A&M Jazz Funk’ EP (A&M AMSP 7464)
Four track £1.58 12in segued by Chris Brown. SEAWIND’s atmospheric 57/114bpm ‘Enchanted Dance’ and JIMMY OWENS’s complex 124bpm ‘Do It To It’ being very specialist. GAP MANGIONE’s attractive 113bpm ‘Dreamflow’ and RICHARD EVANS’s powerfully pushing 118-119bpm ‘Burning Spear’ making the more accessible side.

SLY DUNBAR: ‘Rasta Fiesta’ (Virgin Front Line FLS 12012)
Raved about some months back, the great atmospherically throbbing 119/59bpm 12in reggae instrumental is finally being promoted properly after incessant radio plugs by Capital’s Dave Cash.

PAULINHO DA COSTA: ‘Deja Vu’ (Pablo STEP 3)
Percussion star’s largely EWF-performed and sung 118bpm squeaky skipper is on UK 12in in faded isolation, the US 12in segued brassy ‘Love Till The End Of Time’ instrumental now being only the 112-115-117bpm flip.

EARTH, WIND & FIRE: ‘Star’ (CBS 7902)
Slow starting squeaky 104bpm 7in with jaunty Bee Gee tempo.

TEENA MARIE: ‘Don’t Look Back’ (Motown 12TMG 1158)
Funkily churning 117bpm 12in “rock” treatment of the Miracles/Peter Tosh tune.

ELTON JOHN: ‘Victim Of Love’ (Rocket XPRES 21) (BNDA debut 11/10/79)
Pete Bellotte-prod/penned trite 127pm 7in thumper successfully conceals Elton’s individuality, though pop jocks’ll dig.

EAGLES: ‘Heartache Tonight’ (Asylum K 12394)
Usual Eagles-type noises added to a slow smacking 115bpm beat that’s as disco as Cliff!

KING AND QUEEN: ‘Reunited’ (Decca F 13863)
Nice 42/83bpm reggae reading of Peaches & Herb, on 5:28 7in with dub last part (and flip).

FANTASY BAND FEATURING KEVIN KITCHEN: ‘Won’t You Take Me Back’ (Pepper 12-BP 307)
Howard Huntridge-produced blue-eyed bumpy 123-125bpm 12in hustler murkily churns into a jazzy break.

TATA VEGA: ‘If Love Must Go’ (Motown TMG 1157)
Dead slow 33bpm 7in groaner saved from Bassey-esque bathos by soulful supports from Al Johnson.

JIMMY LINDSAY: ‘Where Is Your Love’ (Gem GEM 12-9)
Moody fiddle intro to a 40/80bpm reggae slowie on green vinyl 12in.

CARLOS ROMANOS: ‘Are You Ready’ (PVK PV 12-26)
UK-recorded repetitive chix-sung 126bpm 12in salsoul clonker.

GOOD NEWS: ‘Australia’ (Epic PC 12-7498)
Village People-copying 129bpm 12in.

CROISETTE: ‘Under Hypnosis’ (AVI AVISL 106)
Ian Levine-produced fast 140bpm Northern-cum-gay 12in flier.

JANICE HOYTE: ‘When I Fall In Love’ (UA 12BP 312)
Flabby UK-recorded gay 139bpm 12in hi-hat hisser.

Imports

STIX HOOPER: ‘Cordon Bleu’ (from LP ‘The World Within’, US MCA MCA-3180)
Solo set by the Crusaders’ drummer is dominated not surprisingly by this great ‘Street Life’-like Joe Sample-penned accelerating 109-111-113-114bpm instrumental with cheeky French accordion, other self-penned tracks like the 98-101bpm ‘Brazos River Breakdown’, 123bpm ‘Rum Or Tequila’ and slow vocal ‘Passion’ being merely pleasant if not self-indulgent.

POSITIVE FORCE: ‘We Got The Funk’ (US Turbo TU-452) (BNDA debut 1/12/80)
Party atmosphere 112bpm 12in “rock” burbler with nagging guitar and an extremely catchy title line chant building up into a potential funkateer rallying call – a new anthem maybe?

SUGARHILL GANG: ‘Rapper’s Delight’ (US Sugarhill SH-542) (BNDA debut 10/13/79)
Amazing 15:00 12in marathon DJ rap session of tongue-twisting complexity locked into and riding the beat of the 112bpm instrumental version of ‘Good Times’, causing a sensation wherever it’s heard.

SHALAMAR: ‘Big Fun’ LP (US Solar BXL-3479) (BNDA debut 3/22/80)
The happily rattling and skittering 123bpm ‘Right In The Socket’ “rock” hit was originally reviewed under hurried conditions so that I missed this consistent set’s many other goodies – like the more smoothly “rocking” 125bpm ‘The Right Time For Us’, attractively jogging 113bpm ‘The Second Time Around’ and 112bpm ‘I Owe You One’, and almost ‘Shame’-like 131-130bpm ‘Girl’.

CHANSON: ‘Sing All Night’ (from LP ‘Together We Stand’, US Ariola SW 50065)
Clapping and zapping 113-137bpm happy romper with wailing ‘Shame’-like sax and ‘Boogie Wonderland’-type staccato attack after a chix ‘n rhythm intro, the whole leading into a dead slow harmony fragment that also intros side two’s rather ordinary 123bpm ‘Jack Be Nimble’ (the 12in choice so far), while ‘Rock Don’t Stop’ is a jittery stamping 119bpm “rock” thudder.

BOBBY LYLE: ‘For Love’ (from LP ‘Night Fire’, US Capitol ST-11956)
Lovely tinkling swaying 124-125bpm instrumental piano throbber builds a nagging intensity like a lusher Joe Sample, the gruffly sung ‘Da-Ya-Ance (Body Chanting)’ having a thumping low energy 132bpm intro to a jazzy staccato synthesizer 135bpm leaper and rattling 133bpm stereo synth break and 136 1/2bpm last part, smoochers being the 43bpm ‘Stop Running Away From Love’ and 40/20bpm ‘Gettin’ Into Love’.

MODERN SOUND CORPORATION: ‘Safari’ (US Sunshine Sound 208)
Gibson Brothers-type 132bpm 12in pounder with wordless chanting and stereo sax whips up simple “high life”-like excitement.

STARGARD: ‘Wear It Out’ (US Warner Bros. DWBS 8891) (BNDA debut 10/6/79)
Verdine White-produced chix-sung skittering smacking 124-126bpm 12in strutter like a looser Emotions with exciting surface sound and stamping break. Instrumental flip.

KINSMAN DAZZ: ‘Keep On Rockin” (US 20th Century TCD-90)
Thumping 129bpm 12in soul pounder with staccato chanting, brass and strings, while the parent ‘Dazz’ LP (T-594) includes another spiky EWF-ish loper, the strings ‘n rhythm introed 128bpm ‘Can’t Get Enough’ and a melodically rattling 117bpm ‘Love Design’.

7TH WONDER: ‘Do It With Your Body’ (from LP ‘Climbing Higher’, US Parachute RRLP 9014)
Pleasant if slightly dated soul set, strongest being this gradually building smooth 128bpm churner with Dazzle-type harp during the long intro and strange rattling breaking through the slick chanting, while others are the happily jogging 127bpm ‘All I Want’, jolting slow 50-102bpm ‘Something Beautiful’, dated 108bpm ‘Daisy Lady’ and soulful lush smoochers 22/43bpm ‘Living My Life Just For You’, 41/82bpm ‘Something Inside You Feel’.

BOB MCGILPIN: ‘Sexy Thing’ (US Butterfly FLY-13940) (BNDA debut 8/25/79)
Well produced steadily tripping 113-115bpm 12in clomper clops precisely, along with strings and interesting things behind the heavily mannered white chanting.

ROBIN BECK: ‘Sweet Talk’ (US Mercury MDS-4007) (BNDA debut 9/29/79)
Totally derivative but classily made 115bpm 12in copy of Chic with vocals leaning slightly more towards the Emotions (or Sister Sledge?) . . . anyway, c’est tres chic!

BRUNI PAGAN: ‘Fantasy’ (US Elektra AS-11423) (BNDA debut 8/11/79)
Slowly building 114-115bpm 12in clopper with strident chix and walking bass tempo nothing like Chic/Sledge but in the same BPM range for pop fans.

GAYE EVERS & NITELITE: ‘Body Party’ (US Capitol Disco 8523)
Functional guy ‘n gals 133-130-134bpm 12in canterer brought alive by an excellent long stereo percussion break.

FAZE-O: ‘Breakin’ The Funk’ LP (US She SH 742)
P-funk rap intro to the title track turns indeed into a jittery slow dated 98bpm heavy funker, while the slickly pounding 132bpm ‘Let’s Rock’ harmony flier rather loses the point of the “rock” dance tempo, ideally being slower.

THE IMPRESSIONS: ‘Sorry’ (US 20th Century/Chi-Sound TCD-91)
Carl Davis-produced jaunty 120-122-124-123-125bpm 12in clapping soul smacker with tootling synthesizer break, the Eugene Record-penned ‘All I Want To Do Is Make Love To You’ flip being a lovely 54/107bpm swayer.

EUGENE RECORD: ‘Where Are You’ (US Warner Bros. DWBS 8890)
Brazilian-type slow harmony intro lurches into a happy EWF-type 126bpm 12in strutter with Eugene wailing over the back-up chix.

CHI-LITES: ‘Higher’ (US TK Disco 414)
Edwin Starr rip-off clonking intro to a frantic full tilt 134bpm 12in flier.

LEROY HUTSON: ‘Unforgettable’ (US RSO RSS 305)
Somewhat forgettable overly zingy 128-129bpm 12in “disco” treatment of Nat King Cole’s classic.

ROY AYERS: ‘Fever’ (US Polydor PRO 110)
Remixed US 12in (promo so far) tightens up and strengthens his originally rather too “disco” version, so now after a momentary 128bpm flurry the 126bpm intro leads into 124bpm main vocal and 125bpm last part.

  1. Another musical milestone that slips by almost unnoticed. With little fanfare James reviews The Sugarhill Gang’s “Rappers Delight”… little did he know what was about to happen. Also beginning to see that subtle shift to a more rock oriented production featuring in the new releases as we career towards the 80s and disco begins to morph

  2. First written mention of hip hop probably by anyone anywhere with the Sugarhill Gang review – also was that the first reference to a funkateer in print by the time I was old enough to be part of the scene 3 years later it had become a bit of a cliche – also earlier in the year I think I noticed Mr Hamilton probably naming Chris Hill and co the Funk Mafia.

  3. We’ve often seen the word “rap” in reviews before now, but only in reference to spoken passages within soul tracks (Millie Jackson in particular was seen as the queen of rap). To differentiate the two styles, James will use the term “DJ rap” for further early hip hop releases, and we won’t see the term “hip hop” used for a good few years to come.

  4. Yes I think I first remember hearing about hip hop in late 1982 early 1983 when electro was starting to get big.

Also despite what James is predicting I don’t think the “rock” dance/tempo ever took off over here aside from being mentioned in the titles of the big hits ‘Disco Nights Rock Freak’ and ‘it’s A Disco Night Rock Don’t Stop’ I’d always been curious what it meant and it was only the original uploads of these columns a couple of years ago that enlightened me.

    1. It’s odd, isn’t it – from these columns, you’d think that the “rock” tempo was the new dance sensation sweeping the country, and yet it’s something that you never read about in histories of the period. (Unlike the “sleaze” tempo, which James has also picked up on.)

To my ears, the “rock” tempo signals the first small shift away from the classic disco sound, towards something more “post-disco” (for want of a better word).

  5. Yes the shift was a move away from the “orchestral” “NYC zingy strings” tempo to a harder edged sound and the synth euro Kraftwerk inspired production and of course the ubiquitous Philly soul/ big diva sound is ever present throughout.
