Melodically romping 127bpm 12in galloper, very much a faster ‘I Will Survive’ with similar cleverly crafted mass appeal.

GIBSON BROTHERS: ‘Que Sera Mi Vida (If You Should Go)’ (Island 12WIP 6525) (BNDA debut 7/12/80)
Excitingly whapping and zapping 130-129(break)-131bpm 12in galloper makes a Village People-ish change of pace.

CAMEO: ‘Find My Way’ (Casablanca CANL 166)
Exhilaratingly zipping and zinging 134bpm 12in remake of their ‘Thank God It’s Friday’-featured oldie (oddly, that original 126-123bpm version is the 7in now), with an exciting mix-in point at a rattling rhythm break if the first vocal third is too “disco” for some tastes. Double value flip features last year’s monster (but now dated) 122bpm ‘It’s Serious’. 

HAMILTON BOHANNON: ‘Let’s Start The Dance’ (Mercury 9199830) (BNDA debut 7/22/78)
Still available on 12in, last autumn’s disco smash sounds brand new again as it mixes superbly with Al Hudson and several other newies, running at 119(1st vocal)-120(1st break & 2nd vocal)-119(2nd break & on)-118bpm (final break & fade). Similarly, and already being much revived, Eumir Deodato’s ‘Whistle Bump’ 12in runs 117(1st minute)-120bpm, and varies up perfectly into Shalamar ‘Socket’. Try ‘em again, they work!

COGNAC: ‘How High’ (Electric LWOT 41) (BNDA debut 9/29/79)
British-recorded sax, vibes and chix swinger pushed along by old fashioned churning bass on 12in at 129(intro)-127(1st vocal)-128(sax break)-127(2nd vocal)-128bpm (bass break – 56 secs – & outro vocal). This is getting complicated!

ISAAC HAYES: ‘Don’t Let Go’ (Polydor STEPX 4) (BNDA debut 10/6/79)
Roy Hamilton/Manhattan Transfer oldie dressed up with sparse “rock” trimming on a misleadingly fast 137bpm 12in which sounds (and dances) a lot slower until you come to mixing it!

IDRIS MUHAMMAD: ‘(Dance Dance) Work Your Body’ (from LP ‘Foxhuntin’’, Fantasy FT 562)
Continuously segued side runs ‘Boogie Boots’ and the hot title track on into this similar 134-135bpm funk-jazz disco driver, which with some ‘Troglodyte’-type snorting and lotsa percussion work is equally if not more strong.

FREDA PAYNE: ‘Band Of Gold’ (Inferno HEAT 17)
Stolidly stomping 109bpm classic from 1970, on gold vinyl 7in with odd-sounding alternative remix version as flip, should be an interesting mix out of Fern Kinney!

DOBIE GREY: ‘The In Crowd’ (Infinity INFT 115)
Somewhat disco-fied 127-130bpm gray vinyl 12in remake of the original 1965 Mod anthem, which is also out on Decca as ‘The London Boys’ maxi (FR 13864).

CHOSEN FEW: ‘Boogie Army (Boogie Down)’ (Ariola Hansa AHAD 548)
Marching intro to a simple 116bpm pop disco 12in with sound effects and repetitive Olympic Runners-type chanting.

ADDRISI BROTHERS: ‘Ghost Dancer’ (Scotti Brothers 11361T)
Bee Gees-ish squeaky 118bpm 12in chugger with trotting instrumental and rhythm sections.

THE RITCHIE FAMILY: ‘Put Your Feet To The Beat’ (from LP ‘The Ritchie Family’, Mercury 9109627) (BNDA debut 8/25/79)
Conceived as female Village People by the same production team, the LP is as you would expect, this 128-126bpm pounder having enough ballsy changes to be interesting.

LOWRELL: ‘Mellow, Mellow Right On’ (from LP ‘Lowrell’, US AVI AVI-6070)
Out a few weeks and hitherto ignored, this unexcitingly packaged stick of dynamite has suddenly exploded overnight! A moody lush slowly thudding hypnotic 44/88bpm smoocher with romantic rap before the soulful mellow vocal, it’s like a huskier Marvin Gaye and continues instrumentally into the next track for a marathon 10:45. Eugene Record is amongst the co-producers, and it’s quality all the way.

DAVID FATHEAD NEWMAN: ‘One Step At A Time’ / ‘You Gotta Keep Gotta Keep Dancin’’ (from LP ‘Scratch My Back’, US Prestige P-10108).
Interesting fast jazzy build-up to an exciting multi-textured romping 124-128-129-132-135-131bpm sax squawker topped off by wailing and chortling Tanyette Willoughby’s vocal, the whole frantic 12:25 marriage of jazz and New York-orientated disco being a blinding success – if not maybe too frisky for here. ‘Rock Me, Baby (Like My Back Ain’t Got No Bone)’ is an accelerating 109-113bpm Bessie Ruth Scott-sung sultry slow “sleaze” rocker, ‘The Buggs’ a samba-flavoured 97bpm jazz instrumental, ‘Two Can Do It’ an atmospheric 76/38bpm smoocher, and the title track a purposeful thumping slow 107-109bpm plodder with slightly out of place zingy strings ‘n chix.

LONNIE LISTON SMITH: ‘Expansions’ (from LP ‘The Best Of’, US RCA AFL1-2897)
Due soon on UK 12in, this very specialist but surprisingly exciting tinkling, rattling and tootling 63/126-129bpm atmospheric jazz vocal from a few years back is big for some South-Eastern funksters and makes an incredibly good mix out of the 63 1/2bpm central section of Atmosfear ‘Dancing In Outer Space’ . . . which I possibly proved at the Royalty!

CLEVELAND EATON & THE GARDEN OF EATON: ‘The Birmingham Train’ (from LP ‘Keep Love Alive’, US Ovation OV 1742)
Chix-chanted 120-119-123bpm jittery jumper (not actually a chugger despite hooting train whistle!), modelled on Rufus Thomas’s old ‘Memphis Train’, while his staccato funky chanting intro of ‘Get Off’ dissipates once the flute-spiced 126bpm strutter gets going. ‘Free At Last’ is a lush 122/61bpm jazz-funk instrumental, the title track a dramatically scored slow 92/41bpm jogging soul duel, ‘I’m Lonely Tonight’ an almost cloyingly breathy 89bpm jogger, ‘Burnin’’ a ponderous 104-105bpm roller, and ‘I Don’t Know’ a 117bpm harmony swayer.

T-CONNECTION: ‘Danger Zone’ (from LP ‘Totally Connected’, US Dash 30014)
Disappointing set, this jolly 115bpm jitterer being the only one with their old rattling Bahamian rhythm – and it’s short, too. The pleasantly meandering 40/80bpm ‘Choosing’ smoocher at 6:03 is the set’s longest, other cuts being the jiggly 115bpm ‘Ecstasy’, swaying 93/42bpm ‘Let’s Do It Today’, dated 105bpm ‘I Like Funkin’ With You’, burbling 101bpm ‘That’s Love’, and brassy 108bpm ‘Born To Boogie’.

ANITA WARD: ‘Don’t Drop My Love’ (US TK Disco 420) (BNDA debut 10/20/79)
Cowbell-clonking 126bpm intro builds into a stridently piercing 125bpm 12in canterer of no special note.

JO-ANN BROOKS: ‘Love Can Be Sold’ (US IGM 12E4-8336)
Bass-bumped bouncy long intro to an attractive sparsely arranged 129-128bpm 12in canterer with sensuously wailing Jo-Ann and staccato support, much better than the official A-side’s 129bpm ‘The Stranger’, with pounding Injun war drums intro to a breathy pop bounder.

CORY DAYE: ‘Green Light’ (US New York International YD-11669) (BNDA debut 8/4/79)
Gradually building low energy rambling 121-118-120-121bpm 12in thumper by a chick who must surely have been Dr Buzzard’s singer, more interesting than the hit “rock” but pop-orientated 126-124-125bpm Injun rhythm ‘Pow Wow’ plug side.

REN WOODS: ‘Everybody Get Up’ (US ARC 43-11075) (BNDA debut 11/3/79)
Cheerful bouncy 125bpm 12in strutter by a multi-tracked chick, with more strings than brass to ring the changes on the clopping EWF-like tempo. Instrumental flip.

FATBACK: ‘King Tim III (Personality Jock)’ (from LP ‘XII’, US Spring SP-1-6723) (BNDA debut 10/13/79)
Jiggling 118bpm “rock” chugger with some but not enough Sugarhill Gang-type DJ rap, already on UK 7in (POSP 78) coupled with the boring 113bpm ‘You’re My Candy Sweet’ jogger, while the burbling 121bpm ‘Disco Bass’ has deep bass vocal bits and oogie-oogie backing over a clapping “rock” beat.

RONNIE MILSAP: ‘Get It Up’ (US RCA PD 11683) (BNDA debut 10/20/79)
Blind white sixties soul singer and now Country superstar gets funky again with a thudding slow 104bpm 12in bumper that echoes the recently reviewed City Streets title in its “get it up, get down, get it on, or get on out” refrain, while many prefer his thumping unhurried 111bpm B-side revival of Tommy Tucker’s ‘Hi-Heel Sneakers’.

PLEASURE: ‘Future Now’ LP (US Fantasy F-9578) (BNDA debut 12/8/79)
Out a while but still warm for some, the sparsely strutting 123-124bpm ‘The Real Thing’ “rock” funker smacks into “uh-huh, get down” chix towards the end, ‘Glide’ is a bass-snapped 111 1/2bpm laid-back “rock” clapper, ‘Universal’ an 118bpm brassy jogger, and ‘Nothin’ To It’ a ticking 112bpm harmony swayer.

TOWER OF POWER: ‘Back On The Streets’ LP (US Columbia JC 35784)
Also still warm after a while, the jittery jogging 102/51bpm ‘In Due Time’ swayer has Jackson-ish vocals while the smacking 124bpm ‘Nowhere To Run’ revival is like ‘Shake Your Body’ once past a rattling and bumping intro, the clapping 119bpm ‘Rock Baby’ is a jerky “rock” stamper.
