Caister Concluded [Again?]

At the recent Caister weekender, Sean French & Chris Brown’s Children’s Party featured such funk hits as ‘Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush’, ‘Robin Hood’, ‘Who’s Afraid Of The Big Bad Wolf?’ and a Sooty show to amuse the kiddywinks. Chris Hill’s opening night fairy story, with everyone sitting on the floor doing sillies linked in with the narrative, was about the triumph of music over evil oppression, while the ‘Shout’ call-and-response chant was accompanied by an arms up-stretched, wrist-twisting cupped hands salute (like unscrewing an imaginary lightbulb). But what has all this got to do with soul music, some sour-faced stick in the muds are asking? Not a lot, but does it matter? The music was there too, as a rallying point and reason for everyone to identify with each other. The current material being played has already worked its way up the disco chart now, but other oldies apart from Brass Construction that were heavily featured included Grover Washington ‘Sausalito’, Roy Ayers ‘Running Away’, Crown Heights Affair ‘Far Out’, Charles Earland ‘Let The Music Play’, Deodato ‘Whistle Bump’, El Coco ‘Let’s Get It Together’, Joe Sample ‘There Are Many Stops’, Miroslav Vitous ‘New York City’ and of course the O’Jays ‘I Love Music’. Of the newies, Positive Force proved to be too late an arrival on import in sufficient numbers, but has more than made up for it since! Anyway, by Caister’s end everyone was singing over Al Hudson the revised lyrics “you know you have done it”, and once again the tribes were able to feel as if they’d achieved something significant, the final Finale on Sunday evening with Billy Paul’s ‘Bring The Family Back’ and huge ‘Auld Lang Syne’ circles.

Dramatic synthesizer, brass and syndrums intro to a happily romping 119-121bpm 7in with wide appeal.

RAMSEY LEWIS: ‘Spring High’ (CBS 12-8007)
Immensely catchy synthesiser (by Stevie Wonder) and piano 115bpm jazz-funk skipper leads off a 4-track £1.59 12in oldies EP, also including the 41/82bpm ‘That’s The Way Of The World’ slowie, excitingly complex 110-107bpm ‘Tequila Mockingbird’ rhythm chatterer and tootling, tinkling and buzzing 121-122bpm ‘All The Way Live’ loper – all his recent classics!

Three mid-60s classics on 7in EP, this at 64/129bpm, ‘I Got You (I Feel Good)’ at 74/148bpm and ‘Out Of Sight’ at 64/129bpm, which proves that BPMs best relate to the other tempos of their own time!

RITZ: ‘Dance Until You Drop’ (Epic EPC 13-8001)
John Luongo-remixed UK-made but US-style (and quality – praise indeed!) fast frothy frantic 131-132-133-132bpm 12in flier with gay appeal.

WILSON PICKETT: ‘Groove City’ (EMI America EA 104)
Overly fast zingy 140bpm 7in galloper, evidently with Northern Wally appeal.

MELBA MOORE: ‘Burn’ (Epic EPC 13-7968)
Somewhat muddled Pete Bellotte-produced strutting fast 125bpm 12in chugging thudder with bottleneck rock guitar and indistinct vocals.

Bubbling synthesiser tones and a bit more harmonica on 126bpm Europop 12in do not another ‘Get Another Love’ make.

SPOONIN’ GEE: ‘Spoonin’ Rap (A Drive Down The Street / I Was Spanking And Freaking) / (I Don’t Drink Smoke Or Gamble Neither / I’m The Cold Crushing Lover)’ (US Sound Of New York QC 708)
Latest in what looks like being a flood, this marathon 98bpm 12in rapper’s delight is all rhythm-riding DJ rap with only the most basic of bass bumping backing and no gaps whatsoever on the A-side.

GEORGE DUKE: ‘I Want You For Myself’ (from LP ‘Master Of The Game’, US Epic JE 36263) (BNDA debut 12/15/79)
The full 6:36 of his current single is a lovely smoothly pushing 121bpm oogie-oogie chugger with pretty piano and sweetly squeaking Emotion-al chix, while the thoroughly derivative but great 116bpm burbling Sly-type P-funk ‘Games’ is sadly only 3:13 short and should work well with ‘Knee Deep’. ‘Part 1: The Alien Challenges The Stick’ is a spacey tempoless drum doodler that builds through 49/98bpm to ‘Part 2: The Alien Succumbs To The Macho Intergalactic Funkativity Of The Funkblasters’, a fascinating specialist largely instrumental 9:18 jumping and jolting heavy funk 96-97-96-98bpm meanderer. Other cuts include the ‘I Just Don’t Want To Be Lonely’-like sweet 80/40bpm ‘Every Little Step I Take’ swayer, EWF-ish 125-124-125bpm ‘I Love You More’, moodily-starting brassy 127-128bpm ‘Look What You Find’ lurcher and double-timing 70-75bpm Latin percussion ‘Dog-Man’ with the West Side Story ‘America’ brass.

Elsewhere the girls take the lead, as on the Ross-ish 128bpm ‘Take Me Back’ swinger, burbling funky 113bpm ‘Runnin’ From The Law’ chugger, smacking 120bpm ‘Put On Your Rollerskates’ “rock” jitterer with staccato acappella end, and lovely slow 44½bpm ‘(Once In A Lifetime) Dream Come True’ – which could have UK radio hit appeal.

RUFUS AND CHAKA: ‘Heaven Bound’ (from LP ‘Masterjam’, US MCA MCA 5103) (‘Do You Love What You Feel’ / ‘Any Love’ BNDA debut 11/17/79)
Chaka Khan returns with a Quincy Jones produced set, this most timely track being a Crusaders-ish 96bpm jogger, while ‘Walk The Rockway’ is a whapping spiky 125bpm clapper, ‘Do You Love What You Feel’ (also on UK 7in) a staccato strutting 120bpm “rock” clapper, ‘Any Love’ a smoothly flowing 124bpm thumper, ‘Live In Me’ a slightly Heatwave-like Rod Temperton-penned subdued 107bpm chugger, ‘Body Heat’ a rambling bass-prodded 120bpm clopper, ‘I’m Dancing For Your Love’ a lushly harmonised 124bpm strutting trotter, ‘What Am I Missing?’ a 97bpm plodder and the title track a pent-up 119bpm “rock” jitterer that never quite lets rip to be another Michael Jackson.

BILL SUMMERS: ‘She’s Gone’ (from LP ‘On Sunshine’, US Prestige P-10107)
Hall & Oates’s classic slowie gets a great gorgeous jiggling 95-99bpm reggae treatment, while Eddy Grant’s ‘Walking On Sunshine’ becomes a chix-chanted sparse 122-123bpm clonker with thicker throbbing percussion breaks. Apart from the 12in-issued leaping 134-132bpm ‘Dancing Lady’ and rattling 133bpm ‘Feel The Heat’, this pleasant set is mainly downtempo, ‘Musicland’ being a brassy 101bpm plodder and ‘Love’s All We Need’ a 104bpm jogger, the aim being to show off the percussion star’s Summers Heat support group.

Powerful bass and bongo slow thwacking “rock” intro to a creamy 115-114-116-115bpm chugger on remixed 12in with instrumental flip.

MICHAEL MCGLOIRY: ‘Love Every Inch Of Me’ (US Atlantic DK 4807)
Ultra-commercial brightly tinkling 122-121bpm 12in romper with Chic-type chix, syndrums and occasional gruffly mumbling fella goes into a very different acid guitar then sparsely booming central section.

DIVA GRAY & OYSTER: ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ (US Columbia 43-11113) (‘St. Tropez’ BNDA debut 12/8/79)
Stark jazz-funk intro to a slinky chix-chanted rolling 108bpm 12in jogger with slight Eastern promise and electric keyboards towards the end, the ‘St. Tropez’ US A-side being a lightweight 124bpm disco romper.

MARVIN GAYE: ‘Ego Tripping Out’ (US Tamla T 54305F)
Conversational pulsating gentle 120bpm 7in thudder (due on 12in too) finds Marv riding the rhythm at times almost in DJ rap style.

DONALD BYRD: ‘Morning’ (from LP ‘And 125th Street, N.Y.C.’, US Elektra 6E-247)
The jazz trumpet tootler teams up with chanting singers for a funk-orientated set but his horn often intrudes too much, except on this keyboardist Clare Fischer-tinkled insidious 96bpm instrumental jolter with nagging appeal. The high spirited but messy 124bpm ‘Gìving It Up’ jittery funk burbler has an acappella chanting intro, ‘Pretty Baby’ is a jolting slow 102bpm chanting jiggler, while ‘Gold The Moon White The Sun’ is a Procol Harum-like 84bpm slowie, ‘People Suppose To Be Free’ is a lurching 109bpm jogger, ‘Veronica’ a slow-starting lush 78bpm instrumental swayer and ‘I Love You’ a loosely chugging 129bpm chanter.
