THE WHISPERS: ‘And The Beat Goes On’ (Solar SO12-11) (BNDA debut 1/12/80)
In this exceptional week for strong UK releases all the first seven reviews deserve to lead off the list! This happens to be the hottest due to its amazing chart performance after just a few days of release, the smacking and thwhacking 115-116bpm “rock” whacker being hot off the presses and into the chart almost before the import version had hit our decks. Try it with Prince if you haven’t already!

BRASS CONSTRUCTION: ‘Shakit’ (UA 12UP 615)
Terrific bumping and jumping 121-122-123-120-124-120-124-120-124-123bpm ‘Moving’-type driver with catchy counting and butch chanting, now on 12in but strangely as flip to the good though less immediate 116-117bpm ‘Music Makes You Feel Like Dancing’ “rock” churner with gimmicky synthesizer effects. Their best in years, the parent LP (reviewed in depth on import) is also out (UAG 30285), but these are the best two tracks back-to-back.

ROY AYERS: ‘Don’t Stop The Feeling’ (Polydor STEPX 9) (BNDA debut 12/22/79)
Maddeningly nagging insistent repetitive simple chant over a great funkily thudding basic beat, the 7in being 113-114bpm, LP version 114-115bpm and US promo 12in 115-116bpm – so who knows what the overdue UK 12in will be?! The two bar wailing intro goes nicely out of Edgar Winter’s outro, or can be skipped for a chop out of Slave. 

PLAYERS ASSOCIATION: ‘We Got The Groove’ (Vanguard VSL 5015) (BNDA debut 3/22/80)
Resonant bass winds up a catchily churning 129bpm brassy chanter with all sorts of classy changes weaving through the easily loping “rock” backbeat of this eagerly awaited 12in, which mixes nicely out of Maximum Penetration.

SHALAMAR: ‘Right In The Socket’ (Solar SO12-2) (BNDA debut 3/22/80)
The one we all thought should have been out first is a happily rattling and skittering 123bpm “rock” sizzler now on 12in flipped by the less complicated plaintive 125bpm ‘The Right Time For Us’ clippety-clopper.

OSIBISA: ‘Pata Pata’ (Pye 12P 5013)
Although twice as rhythmic and very different in attack this dynamite happily rattling and plopping 127bpm 12in revival of Miriam Makeba’s afro oldie is amazingly the same basic BPM as the original, making interesting overdub possibilities. Huge for me already, it smells like a smash!

STOP: ‘I Can Feel It’ (Elite DAZZ 3)
Excellent prettily skipping instrumental 124-125-124-123bpm 12in jazz piano tinkler goes through guitar, flute, harmonica and bass breaks with other interesting variations too, the UK-recorded group having no connection with Atmosfear other than being from the same stable.

PATRICE RUSHEN: ‘Haven’t You Heard’ (Elektra K 12414T) (BNDA debut 12/15/79)
Staccato spikily lurching 129-128-129-128-127bpm strutter, due and indeed presumably on intended 12in.

BONNIE POINTER: ‘I Can’t Help Myself’ (Motown TMG 1171) (BNDA debut 1/5/80)
Happily churning old Four Tops romper on 129bpm 7in mixes so perfectly into Montana’s ‘I Love Music’ (LP version) that Froggy didn’t even notice I’d done it!

FAT LARRY’S BAND: ‘Here Comes The Sun’ (Fantasy 12FTC 185) (BNDA debut 2/9/80)
Jittery choppily clapping 123-122-123bpm 12in harmony chanter with message lyrics, bass scatting break, racing jazzy piano and scrubbing guitar but less flow than ‘Lookin’ For Love Tonight’; however, the full 12in mix of ‘Center City’ is flip, the complex emphasis-shifting oldie working through 126(intro)-124(vocal)-122(chorus)-124(instr)-123(instr & chorus fade)bpm. Phew! At least, that’s the old version, I’ve yet to get this 12in!

FREDDIE JAMES: ‘Hollywood’ (from LP ‘Get Up And Boogie’, Warner Bros. K 56735)
This and the similar ‘Crazy Disco Music’ are both like bland and interminable 129bpm continuations of ‘Get Up And Boogie’. “Disco” pure and simple.

TOOTS & THE MAYTALS: ‘Chatty, Chatty’ (Island 12WIP 6544)
Infectiously happy old-fashioned 120bpm ska-type reggae rollicker, evidently on 12in.

NITEFLYTE: ‘If You Want It’ (Ariola ARO 220)
Supersessioneer-supported gorgeous 43/86bpm sweet soul slowie from last spring, finally here on 7in, sways and lurches with falsetto shrieks and mucho emotion. Great.

TERI DESARIO WITH KC: ‘Yes, I’m Ready’ (Casablanca NB 2225)
KC’s hit balladeering style now heads back up the US charts as the duetting partner (unbilled on the UK label) for this pretty 36bpm 7in revival of Barbara Mason’s soul classic.

THE HOT FORTIES: ‘Theme From Firepower’ (DJM DJS 10934)
Gato Barbieri-penned but more Chuck Mangione-ish 122bpm 7in trumpet instrumental jiggler, evidently used as Radio One’s Top 40 show theme, should have disco, MoR and even jazz appeal.

THE SPECIALS: ‘Too Much Too Young’ (2-Tone CHS TT7)
Sorry, disco purists, but this ultra zestful 127bpm ska jump-up is just so full of life that I love it! However, you can read about this sort of stuff all over the place so I won’t review the other Mod newies.

MERRY CLAYTON: ‘Emotion’ LP (US MCA MCA-3200)
Dramatic slow brassy clashing intro (useful as a tempo changer) to the title track becomes a superb 91bpm haunting soul jogger that gets strongly rhythmic through Merry’s wailing, like a steady-paced ‘Street Life’, and could be huge. In typical American style, the obviously intended disco cuts are a surprisingly unswinging 120bpm ‘Sly Suite’ medley of Sly Stone oldies and a better 119-121-119bpm revival of First Choice’s ‘Armed And Extremely Dangerous’.

LA PREGUNTA: ‘Chameleon’ (US GNP Crescendo GNP 12003)
Great rattling and jumping rhythm workout speeds Herbie Hancock’s oldie up to 118-119-118-119-118bpm, adds some chanting chix and syndrums between the jazzy solos, mixes perfectly out of Tony Rallo’s ‘Holdin’ On’, and is at both 45 and 33 1/3 rpm on different sides of the same 12in.

INSTANT FUNK: ‘Bodyshine’ (US Salsoul SG 318) (BNDA debut 11/24/79)
Much better now that it’s on remixed 12in, the steadily stamping sparse 119bpm bass burbler builds up as it progresses and keeps harking back to their old 113bpm ‘I Got My Mind Made Up’ by reviving the “anytime” catchword and same style of spoken vocal phrasing. C’mon, you can get it, get it girl, anytime, tonight is fine!

BIG FOOT: ‘I Apologize’ (US Sue International SRI-1224)
Juggy Murray (Jones)-produced lovely mellow sax-introed 49/97bpm 12in jogging swayer leads into a Lou Rawls-like vocal, while the similarly long good value ‘Watch Your Step’ B-side is a subdued funky 116-115-116-117-116-118-117bpm steady clapper which quotes spooky music themes and in its stage-whispered warning lyrics also coincidentally echoes Instant Funk’s phrasing (mixing quite well with ‘Bodyshine’).

SHARON PAIGE: ‘Tonight’s The Night’ (US Source SOR-13952) (BNDA debut 2/16/80)
Pleasant sounding though none too profound Harold Melvin-produced and Blue Notes-supported creamy 118-119-120-121-120-121-122bpm 12in “rock” clonker works through a long symdrums, strings and scratching guitar intro to become an intensifying but mainly lazy repetitive simple soul doodler which amazingly also borrows some vocal patterns from Instant Funk.

GREY & HANKS: ‘Now I’m Fine’ (from LP ‘Prime Time’, US RCA AFL1-3477) (BNDA debut 3/8/80)
Insistently chugging 121-122bpm “rock” trotter with creamy strings and obvious disco feel is possibly the best from a set with too many short tracks that are much of a muchness. A Bobby Rush-type dated funk flavor appears at one tempo, on the jolting 111bpm ‘For The People’, 112bpm title track and slightly more “rock” 110bpm ‘We Need More’, while faster tunes lack personality, like the frantic chix-chanted jiggly 122bpm ‘Single Girls’, repetitive jiggly ‘Tired Of Taking Chances’, jerkily clapping 134bpm ‘Love’s In Command’ and leaping 135bpm ‘I’m Calling On You’.

LE PAMPLEMOUSSE: ‘Creepin’’ (from LP ‘Planet Of Love’, US AVI AVI-6080) (‘Planet Of Love’ BNDA debut 3/8/80)
Coolly thumping 128bpm flier sounds zingy to begin with (chanting chix don’t help), but builds through synthesizer and a jaunty rhythm (full of mix points) into trombone and trumpet solos to become rather respectable jazz-funk.

CANDIDO: ‘Candi’s Funk’ LP (US Salsoul SA 8530)
In most ways a disappointing set as three of the tracks are all within a whisker of the same frantically fast tempo, but Azymuth fans may appreciate this as they should mix quite well out of ‘Jazz Carnival’ during its latest rhythm break. All are rattling Latin percussion bashers, the brassy 138-140-141bpm ‘Samba Funk’, flying but softly crooned 139-141bpm ‘Do You Wanna Dance’ and more cleanly pounding 137bpm ‘Super City’, while the gently starting 123bpm title track tapper doesn’t do much.

BEVERLY JOHNSON: ‘Don’t Run For Cover’ (from LP ‘Don’t Lose The Feeling’, US Buddah BDS 5726) (‘Can’t You Feel It’ BNDA debut 2/2/80)
Jittery pushing and tapping good 118-116-119bpm “rock” thumper with Osibisa backing, as has the steady 116bpm ‘Can’t You Feel It’ “rock” clomper, though not the title track bass-bumped fast yet smoothly sung 133-129-132-132bpm melodic romper with ‘Shame’-like sax.

PARLIAMENT: ‘Theme From The Black Hole’ (from LP ‘Gloryhallastoopid’, US Casablanca NBLP 7195) (BNDA debut 2/23/80)
Not the film theme tune, it’s more of that typical slow jolting heavily burbling P-funky stuff, and to judge from a specially segued promo 12in (the tracks join with a useful explosion effect) is the same 111bpm as the more interesting instrumental ‘The Big Bang Theory’, which mixes quite well out of Slave.

MARGO’S KOOL OUT CREW: ‘Death Rap’ (US Heavenly Star 721)
Quite good party atmosphere 12in rapper with ‘Good Times’ hints in the heavily textured varied 110-114-116-117bpm backing.
