Skippable freaky phone ringing intro to a great sparsely smacking perky 113-114bpm heavy bass thumper that works well out of Tom Browne and ‘Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll’ before mixing on perfectly into Denise LaSalle ‘I’m So Hot’, amazingly on 3-track 12in flipped by the previously 7-inched but now full 115-114-115-116bpm ‘Do Your Thang’ and 110-112-114bpm ‘Copy This’ – the import album’s three hottest tracks!

SHAKATAK: ‘Steppin’’ (enquiries to Les McCutcheon, 0602-410055)
On unidentified moody white label and well worth finding, this lovely lazily swaying classy instrumental 99bpm 12in jazz piano jogger obviously has ‘The Groove’ in mind as though much slower it unnecessarily keeps stopping almost too often for comfort. Similar quality jazz (nothing amateur about these) are the flip’s two tracks, the skipping 131-130bpm ‘Killing Time’ and atmospheric dead slow 31bpm ‘Lumiere’. Are they British or American?

LEVEL 42: ‘Love Meeting Love’ (Elite DAZZ 5)
UK-recorded musically ambitious if naggingly derivative mellow flowing and swaying 99-95-100-101bpm 12in vocal jogger with bubbling synth ‘Rise’-like beat at times and jazzy piano intensity building from the break, sax taking the lead on the flip’s longer 100-99-100-101-102-101bpm instrumental love version – the whole effect being rather Lonnie Liston Smith meets Gato Barbieri. Early crackly pressings are being recut so there aren’t many copies about yet. 

CRUSADERS: ‘Soul Shadows’ (MCA MCAT 530)
Bill Withers-sung somber pulsating 44/87-86-88-87-88bpm slow jogger may not be another ‘Street Life’, and rather than with others from their new LP is coupled on 3-track 12in by the old bouncily leaping simple 125-127bpm ‘Put It Where You Want It’ from ’72 and more modern convoluted 124-125-124-126-124-125-124-123-125bpm ‘Sweet ‘N Sour’ from ‘77 (all three penned by Joe Sample).

DIANA ROSS: ‘Upside Down’ (Motown 12TMG 1195) (BNDA debut 6/28/80)
Chic-produced (but not mixed) distinctively lurching 109bpm 12in thudding jolter, with more bass at least than the album although it’s still decidedly a Diana Ross record.

ANTONIA RODRIGUEZ: ‘La Bamba’ (Magnet 12MAG 149) (BNDA debut 4/7/79)
Remixed 121bpm 12in reissue of last year‘s Wally hit, ideal for (seriously) parties, au-pairs and pensioners out on a spree.

EDDY GRANT: ‘Preachin’ Genocide’ (from LP ‘Love In Exile’, Ice ICE 19)
Excitingly ethnic 118-120-122-124bpm Afro chanter with throbbing back-beat, stabbing brass, ringing guitar and mounting tension. May be a bit specialist but is really good, ‘Feel The Rhythm (Of You And I)’ being a mellow lush jogging 105(intro)-108bpm revival of the Pioneers oldie with jazzy guitar, and ‘Nobody’s Got Time’ a fast synth-backed 126-127bpm bounder with blues harmonica.

DETROIT SPINNERS: ‘Now That You’re Mine Again’ (from LP ‘Love Trippin’’, Atlantic K50131)
Satisfyingly soulful set, this being a great gospel-drenched old-style 25/50bpm deep soul slowie and ‘Heavy On The Sunshine’ a Ullanda-joined 34bpm smoocher, while (apart from their included last three hits), the faster ones getting action are the happily cantering 125bpm ‘Split Decision’ with deep bass vocal bits and slick 121bpm ‘I Just Want To Fall In Love’.

AVERAGE WHITE BAND: ‘For You For Love’ (RCA AWB 12-2)
Jogging 0-35/71bpm 12in slowie with almost Bee Gees squeakiness at times and jerkily starting bumpily loping 121-119-120bpm ‘Help Is On The Way’ flip.

PROTON: ‘We’re Funkin!’ (Ballistic 12BP 364)
Hi-Tension influenced but messy and poorly recorded chix-sung 125bpm 12in jittery thudder, the cleaner lazier instrumental ‘Make Your Move’ B-side version being much better.

DANCE PEOPLE: ‘Dance The Night Away’ (Satril HH 152)
Interesting subdued 114bpm 7in throbber with a Latin lilt.

RITCHIE FAMILY: ‘Give Me A Break’ (from LP ‘Can’t Stop The Music’, Mercury 6399051) (BNDA debut 5/17/80)
Positively unattractive 125-121bpm basic “disco” squawker, the Village People’s typical zingy 134bpm title track being merely uninteresting (to judge from a special back-to-back 12in promo).

GIORGIO MORODER: ‘Night Drive’ (Polydor POSP 134) (BNDA debut 3/8/80)
Instrumental 129bpm 7in synthesizer thumper from ‘American Gigolo’, whose biggest soundtrack hit (though not on the LP) is actually the Miracles’ old ‘The Love I Saw In You Was Just A Mirage’!

NICK STRAKER BAND: ‘A Walk In The Park’ (CBS 8525)
Galloping 128(intro)-133bpm 7in pure pop, once on Pinnacle and big in Europe.

Similar still but bassily emphasised faster 108½-109bpm remake of his slowly thudding classic jogger (46/92-47/94bpm in its 1974 original version), this is the cut that’s causing all the excitement, others being a lovely dead slow 0-21bpm smooching of Sam Cooke’s ‘You Send Me’, smooth 121bpm revival of Eddie Floyd’s ‘I Never Found Me A Girl’ and some Curtis Mayfield smoochers including the 7in-issued 103/52-106bpm ‘Hold On To Love’ and 28bpm title track plus 40bpm ‘Love Comes Easy With You’.

DYNASTY: ‘Adventures In The Land Of Music’ LP (US Solar BXL1-3576) (BNDA debut 6/28/80)
Apart from the 12in-released 115-116bpm ‘I’ve Just Begun To Love You’, this bright ‘n breezy consistent set’s other killers are the Al Hudson-inspired perkily chugging jittery 114bpm ‘Do Me Right’ smacker, bouncily skipping jaunty 115-114-115bpm ‘Day And Night’ squeaker with Whispers’ ‘Beat’-like breaks and even more ‘Beat’-like 117-118bpm ‘Groove Control’, ‘Ice Breaker’ being an exciting zingy 127bpm flier and the title track a jolting slow 39/79bpm jogger.

ASHFORD & SIMPSON: ‘Love Don’t Make It Right’ (US Warner Bros. WBS 49269) (BNDA debut 7/19/80)
Zappy good bouncily jogging 110bpm 7in backbeat lurcher in the Roberta & Donny mould, full of pent-up excitement (even if it does sound like the Bee Gees singing ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’, sez Rowdy!), edited from their upcoming ‘A Musical Affair’ LP.

CANDI STATON: ‘Betcha I’m Gonna Get Ya’ (from LP ‘Candi Staton’, US Warner Bros. BSK 3428) (‘Looking For Love’ BNDA debut 6/28/80)
Subdued set, liveliest being this bubbling solidly thumping 112bpm chugger with her usual vocal style and a quieter bass-backed bit, the 7in-issued ‘Looking For Love’ being a sombre downbeat deadpan steady 107bpm jogger with ‘Street Life’ tempo and yowling guitar, ‘Halfway To Heaven’ a lazy 85/43bpm slowie and ‘The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game’ a smoothly swinging 124bpm Marvelettes revival still rooted to the dated old Motown structure.

FATBACK: ‘Backstrokin’’ (US Spring 3012) (BNDA debut 8/9/80)
Commercially only on US 7in although the promo 12in remix under review will be out here soon, this bass synth-introed good jaunty 118-117-118-117-118bpm heavy funk smacker should work extremely well with Teena Marie.

WHISPERS: ‘Out The Box’ (US Solar YD-12052) (BNDA debut 1/12/80)
Heatwave-flavoured jittery smacking 113-112-113bpm half-stepper with wheezling synth and scrubbing guitar break, from their old ‘And The Beat Goes On’ LP.

CURTIS MAYFIELD: ‘Love Me, Love Me Now’ (from LP ‘Something To Believe In’, US RSO RS-1-3077) (BNDA debut 7/26/80)
Long moody rhythm intro reaches an atmospheric lovely sweetly-sung 110-111bpm loper that’s getting good DJ reaction without being a clearly defined dancer, ‘Tripping Out’ being a ‘Rise’-type 91bpm slowie.

CHIC: ‘Rebels Are We’ (US Atlantic 3665) (BNDA debut 7/26/80)
Lacklustre jerky disjointed 120bpm 7in backbeat lurcher, less than compulsive.

ALFREDO DE LA FE: ‘Hot To Trot’ (from LP ‘Alfredo’, US Criollo C-473) (BNDA debut 4/19/80)
Interesting amalgamation of Brazilian and disco with long Latin percussion intro, then nice fiddle before the hi-hat takes over is too slow at 118-117-118bpm to mix with the Baby’O/George Duke/Odyssey beat but could work anyhow.

MICHAEL HENDERSON: ‘Wide Receiver’ (US Buddah BDA 622) (BNDA debut 10/18/80)
Chat-introed heavy bass-bumped 125bpm 7in funk thumper builds smackingly and will be even more exciting when not spread over ‘Parts 1 & 2’ (the latter at 124bpm).

ALFONZO SURRETT: ‘Make It Feel Good’ (US MCA 41219)
Slightly disjointed repetitive burbling jiggly 111-112-113-112bpm falsetto-backed soul smacker with some yowling rock guitar, occasional claps and bumping bass on US 7in but reviewed from remixed 12in promo.

STARPOINT: ‘I Just Wanna Dance With You’ (US Chocolate City CC 3208) (BNDA debut 8/9/80)
Heavy bass pushed 116-115-114bpm 7in funk chanter should work with the Raydio/Lakeside/Cameo-type things.
