FUSE ONE: ‘Grand Prix’ (LP ‘Fuse One’ Japanese CTI K26P-6020).
Creed Taylor-produced superstar supersession with such as Ronnie Foster, John McLaughlin, Larry Coryell, Joe Farrell, Stanley Clarke, Ndugu, Paulinho DaCosta, on one of those expensive Jap albums which record shops are happy to demonstrate – hence the late review, this great electronically zinging, rattling, tinkling and splurging jittery 0 – 124 – 129bpm racer with sax punctuations and the purposeful slow basically 109bpm ‘Double Steal‘ jiggly jolter which are well established specialist monsters.

GENE DUNLAP: ‘Love Dancin’ (LP ‘It’s Just The Way I Feel’ US Capitol ST12130).
Superb satisfying set produced with a jazzy bias by drummer Dunlap and sung by the Ridgeway’s (sisters and a brother) maybe more listening than raving although this delicately pitter-pattering low-key bubbling 115bpm gentle jiggler with wheezing synth actually beefs up when you whack on the bass and mix perfectly out of Roy Ayers ‘Running Away’ (a pivotal feature in my own sets as you may have gathered!). The lovely title track is a swaying 45/90bpm melodic lurcher. ‘Rock Radio‘ an Isley-ish fast pulsating 127 – 128bpm smacker, ‘Before You Break My Heart’ a pretty winsome smooth slow 60bpm jogger with nice vocals, ‘I Got You’ a gospel-ish 34/69bpm slowie where Earl Klugh plays keyboards and the lustful explosively jazzy Spanish guitar 0 – 112/56 – 113 – 118bpm ‘Surest Things Can Change’ instrumental, but not on the slow 38bpm ‘Should I Take Her Back, Should I Let Her Go’.

AZOTO: ‘San Salvador’ (Dutch Rams Horn RAMSH 3008).
Italian-recorded rattling 125bpm 12in Euro bounder with nice piano and guitar effects enlivening overly mechanical bland strings, the instrumental latter part being better than the first half shopgirl aimed Wally vocal section and proving surprisingly hot for jazz fans. 

POSITIVE FORCE: ‘Especially For You’ (US Sugarhill SH 552).
Bass bounced jerky jaunty jittery little 115 – 113 (percussion on) – 115bpm swayer, not as infectious as ‘We Got The Funk’ but with similar qualities, that same guitar making tunefully snappy bass and chattering chicks conversation in the breaks.

SISTER SLEDGE: ‘All American Girls’ (US Cotillion 45007).
Unbelievably Narada Michael Walden’s debut frothy 122bpm 12in with the girls sounds just like ”We Are Family’, plus some of his rhythmic sound thrown in for good measure.

BILL SUMMERS AND SUMMERS HEAT: ‘TV’ (LP ‘Call It What You Want’ US MCA-5176).
Somehow last week’s reviews got the uninterestingly empty funk set cut short, missing many correct details. Not my fault! This 116bpm cut mixes nicely with Young & Co’s ‘Strut Your Stuff’ while the 114bpm ‘You Better Turn Around‘ is maddeningly familiar and the 121bpm title track is a staccato bumper, others being the 115 – 116bpm ‘Snatch (Is A Dance), 122bpm ‘Jammin’, 116 – 118bpm ‘Summer Fun, 123bpm ‘Come On Out’, 78/39BPM ‘I Believe In You’.

ISLEY BROTHERS: ‘Who Said?’ (US T-Neck ZS6 2293).
Title line–punctuated self produced 124 – 127bpm 7in choppy chanter with languid subdued backing and party noises to build a dominant socking bouncy smacking offbeat.

MARKLEY BAND: ‘Sunrise’ (LP ‘The Markley Band’ US Accord ST-7000).
Gently swaying pretty guitar and piano 113 – 115 – 116 – 117 – 0bpm jazz instrumental with rising intensity the piano at one stage coming in with surprisingly discordant staccato, other specialist cuts including the ultra fast brassy 167bpm ‘Chicken Fat’ and jazzy 119 – 125bpm ‘Butterfly Stomp‘.

DEBRA LAWS: ‘Be Yourself’ (US Elektra E-47084).
Bassily slow starting attractive moody 86/43bpm 7in, joggy and winsome sweet strings backed 51/102bpm ‘Your Love‘ flip make a nice trailer to her imminent LP.

LATIMORE: ‘Take Me To The Mountain Top’ (US TK Disco TKD-459).
Beautiful piano-rolled 38/76bpm 12in deep soul slowie, likely to be overlooked.

LIME: ‘Your Love’ (US Prism PDS 409).
Thundering fast 138bpm 12in gay disco galloper.

RUTH ‘SILKY’ WATERS: ‘Everybody Loves A Good Funk’ (LP ‘Out In The Open’ US Midsong Int PW 36850).
Bass synth bumped brassy 119 – 118bpm basic funk jerker on an unimpressive dated album.

UK NEWIES

THE BREAKFAST BAND: ‘L.A. 14’ (Disc Empire DEF 1, via 01-351 1433).
Exploding in London initially on limited while label from Tony Monson’s emporium but due commercially soon, this dynamite brassily blasting rhythmically busy incisive bass pushed 115 – 116 – 115 – 116bpm 12in jazz instrumental strangely features steel drums and builds to nice piano and punchy breaks, mixing superbly out of ‘The Bottle’ with much more than mere specialist appeal.

RAH BAND: ‘Slide’ (DJM DJR 10964).
Excellent bassily bumping 62 (intro) – 124bpm 12in instrumental skipper continues the ‘Falcon’ sound but with ballsier bounce and jazzier feel (beware the hiccuping first main beat – cue on the “ho” or mix running on the offbeat claps), the jerkily pausing 114bpm ‘Drat That Cat‘ flip being pure jazz. One wonders who Hewson uses as session musicians?

BEGGAR AND CO: ‘(Somebody) Help Me Out’ (Ensign ENYT 201).
Now on extended commercial 12in through RCA, this 58 (intro) – 116bpm Light Of The World spin-off does a Linx with “whoa oh” chants and thudding lurch beats plus added jittery rhythm and braying punchy brass for the last part, the brand new largely instrumental 118bpm ‘Rising Sun‘ flip being a lot jazzier with a Hi-Tension rhythm.

SPECTRUM: ‘Taking It To The Top’ (Smokey SMJD 001, via Record Shack).
Put together by Chris Richardson & Kris Staines for Smokey Joe Productions, this nicely clean coolly clopping episodic 115 (intro) – 117 (incl rap) – 118 – 116 (synth) – 119 – 120bpm 12in jazz-funk finger snapper even includes a brief rapper section amidst the anticipated solos, the instrumental flip having a slightly sharper smack.

BLACKBYRDS: ‘Don’t Know What To Say’ (Fantasy FTCT 194).
Bland but serviceable 119bpm 12in chugger released after careful consideration instead of either ‘Better Days’ or ‘Love Doesn’t Strike Twice’, the good news for jazzier jocks being it’s flipped by the remixed 111bpm version of their classic ultra-jittery ‘Rock Creek Park‘.

DAVID BENDETH: ‘Goldmine’ (Ensign ENYT 203).
Brassily punctuated staccato falsetto 129 – 130bpm 12in jitterer rather in the old Light Of The World style improves with acquaintance but still doesn’t strike me as being a massive killer despite its popularity at predictable venues – it is however stronger than the jerky jolting soft soul 121 – 123 – 121 – 123 – 124bpm ‘Love Collect‘ official A-side. David incidentally confirms that Canadian-based expatriate West Indian Demo Cates is a bloke.

MISTER P.C.: ‘C’Mon Home’ (FX FX1D, via 01-444 6870).
‘Falcon’-type chix-cooed sax-squealed smoothly thumping 57/114 (intro) – 112bpm jazz-funk instrumental, now as promised on 12in, well worth checking but possibly just a little bit bland and straightforward in comparison with other UK jazz efforts.

GEORGE BENSON: ‘What’s On Your Mind’ (Warner Bros K 17748T).
Gently jogging 0 – 105bpm swayer with nice guitar, due on 12in, flipped by the previously hotter 19/38bpm ‘Turn Out The Lamplight‘.

CRUSADERS: ‘Last Call’ (MCA MCAT 657).
Joe Sample’s new import album will steal what little thunder might have been generated by last summer’s pleasantly flowing 125 – 126 – 125 – 124bpm jazz instrumental trotter, now belatedly on extended 12in remix with the sinuous jauntily jogging 99 – 100 – 101bpm ‘Honky Tonk Strutting‘ as flip.

SECOND IMAGE: ‘Dance Dance Dance’ (Polydor POSPX 224).
Thickly textured raggedly sung simple brassy 120 – 121 – 119 (piano) – 121 – 122 (percussion/chant) – 120bpm 12in UK jolting smacker with instrumental flip, reminiscent of (and mixing with) Linx ‘You’re Lying’ but lacking its finesse. In current circulation on white label.

HOT CUISINE: ‘Dancin’ Me To Ecstasy’ (Kaleidoscope KRL 13-9461).
Biddu-produced 140bpm 12in pop galloper with a trace of ska joining traditional disco trappings, hip jocks naturally preferring the more manageable mellower but too short 122bpm jiggly smacking ‘All Fired Up‘ flip, the group being Sheffield’s erstwhile Celebration.

FRANKIE VALLI: ‘Soul’ (MCA MCAT 645).
‘Instant Replay’ style fiercely rattling and pounding 129bpm 12in pop-disco blaster would have been eagerly snapped up in ’78 and could be welcomed by Wallys now.

KELLY MARIE: ‘Hot Love’ (Calibre Plus PLUSL 5).
Disappointingly hollow 116bpm attempt to emulate Liquid Gold’s forced jollity is seemingly pitched a tone too low although some bagpipe breaks add spacious excitement (that breeze you just felt was James ‘Fish’ Heron rushing to get a copy!), while the inclusion of a new 121bpm Special American Remix of ‘Feels Like I’m In Love’ as the 12in version’s flip suggests someone else suspects it ain’t too hot too.

TATA VEGA: ‘You Keep Me Hangin’ On’ (Motown 12TMG 1219).
Supremes oldie given a dated pop aimed galloping 119 – 122 – 123 – 124bpm murkily mixed 12in treatment.

EDWIN STARR: ‘Twenty-Five Miles’ (20th Century-Fox TCD 2477).
Frantically flying galloping 125 – 138bpm 12in remake of his 1969 hit in similarly hollered style with added zing.

FREDA PAYNE: ‘Band Of Gold’ (Vintage Champagne VATS 301).
1970’s once vital classic on extended 108 – 110 (instrumental) – 108 – 110 (inst) – 108bpm blue vinyl 12in for the very first time is proving to be incompatible with today’s sounds for many mixing jocks.

ROSE JOYCE: ‘Help Yourself’ (Whitfield K 17747T).
Squeakily sung dated lurching 101 – 102 – 103bpm 12in jitterer could have done with a better more modern remix, but in fact the dead slow 35/17½bpm ‘Golden Touch‘ smoocher is the A-side and indeed already hotter.

DELEGATION: ‘Singing’ (Ariola AROD 252).
Latin-influenced rattling frantic tricky 127bpm jitterer on 3-track 12in with the chatter-introed old fashioned brassy smacking 117bpm ‘Dance Prance Boogie‘ and slow 0 – 44 – 0 – 44 – 0bpm ’12th House’.

RUDY GRANT: ‘Lately’ (Ensign ENYT 202).
Stevie Wonder’s tender smoocher given a gently thumping 41/82bpm 12in reggae beat by the Mexicano, with a nice 41/83bpm ‘Your Loving Is Something Else‘ flip.

THE ASTRONAUTS: ‘Pretty Islands’ (Thunder Bolt TB-D-02 via Orbitone, 01-965 8292).
Fairly ethnic 96bpm 12in calypso, useful for receptive crowds.

CASSANDRA: ‘Thank You For The Many Things You’ve Done’ (Chrysalis CHS 12-2489).
Nice but not outstanding 69bpm 12in lovers rock from the film ‘Babylon’. Johnny Clarke’s more ethnic 68bpm title song being the flip.

TINA CHARLES: ‘Rolling’ (Polydor POSP 218).
Moderately ghastly monotonously piping breezy 146bpm 7in electronic pop throbber, on 12in promo.
