Dynasty ‘Love In The Fast Lane’ and Donald Byrd ‘I’ll Always Love You’ are due on 12in . . . Wallabys opened on Tuesday and not Monday, as an unfortunate printing vision last week would have had you believe, Jeff Young’s gig being at another venue on the previous night and Martin Collins’s weekly night at Luton’s Hat & Bonnet on Tuesdays — apologies to all concerned . . . Didja know though that he arranged the vocals for Barbra & Donna’s ‘Enough Is Enough’?

UK NEWIES

GEORGE BENSON: ‘Never Give Up On A Good Thing’ (LP ‘The George Benson Collection’ Warner Bros K65107).
An obviously high quality oldies double album set (including CTI and Arista material), packed in a single pocket sleeve with a testimonial filled booklet, the only newie apart from the 7in-issued 102bpm ‘Turn Your Love Around‘ being this excellent smoothly whomping brassy 114bpm backbeat smacker which is already huge for demo-serviced jocks and well up to his usual standard … though word has it that the rest of his newly recorded material was not, hence this hasty stop-gap set.

INCOGNITO: ‘North London Boy’ (Ensign ENYT 221).
Their most commercial bet yet, this terrific powerfully skipping 121-122-123bpm 12in jazzy shuffler has het-up vocals by Tessa Webb, the good lyrics interspersed with some searing sax stabs.

EARL KLUGH: ‘Twinkle’ (Liberty 12UP 647).
Dynamite bass snapped delicate but beefy 123bpm guitar picked instrumental jazz jitterer, great mixed out of ‘Heavy On Easy’, on 3-track 12in with the lusher ‘Broadway Ramble’ and ‘Dance With Me’. 

ALPHONSE MOUZON: ‘I’m Glad That You’re Here’ (London HLX 10581).
Silkily lolloping 117bpm jittery loper with Michael Brecker sax and chanting chix, remixed for cooler and less vocal UK-only 12in, which now at this late stage sounds strangely bland and not necessarily better than the original LP version (which is also out here now, on the ‘Morning Sun’ set, London SH 8547).

EDDIE RUSS: ‘Zaius’ (Impact IMP 5).
For a long time one of jazz-funk’s most keenly sought rarities until a flood of cheap cut-out LPs killed its cachet, the now slightly slowed-down rattling and jiggling 125-127-129-126(guitar)-128bpm solo-filled instrumental leaper is on 3-track 12in with the almost as hot but even more specialist ‘See The Light‘ and ‘Tea Leaves‘.

SHAKATAK: ‘Easier Said Than Done’ (Polydor POSPX 375).
The enigmatic Nigel Wright, England’s one man record industry, hits paydirt again with a gorgeous lazily clopping jazzy 103bpm 12in piano tinkler which ends with cooing chix, possibly the pleasantest thing they’ve done. Flipped by the slick guitar shuffled 127-0bpm ‘Late Night Flight‘.

ROGER: ‘Do It Roger’ (LP ‘The Many Facets of Roger’ Warner Bros K 56960).
Amazingly successful fusion of heavy funk and jazz, an essential purchase not only for the 12in-issued 0-118bpm ‘Grapevine‘ and beautifully jazzy 118bpm ‘A Chunk Of Sugar‘, but also for this slow starting then sleazily rolling 0-27-108bpm funker, the synth twiddled 0-112bpm ‘Maxx Axe‘ and P’funky 111bpm ‘So Ruff So Tuff‘ — in fact every track is a very listenable and subtle gem. Get it, if you haven’t already!

SLAVE: ‘Wait For Me’ (LP ‘Showtime’ Cotillion K50831).
Creating a consistently solid dance sound, the hot funk set’s standouts are this chunkily motorvatin’ 116bpm rolling chugger, the similarly chunky rolling 0-114-113-112-113bpm ‘Party Lites‘, pent-up funkily lurching 113bpm ‘Snap Shot‘, “live”-style repartee-filled clonking 111bpm ‘Smokin‘, huskily sung swaying 111-109bpm ‘Steal Your Heart‘, and somewhat inconclusive 102-100bpm ‘Funken Town‘.

RUDDY THOMAS: ‘Just One Moment Away’ (Hawkeye HD 038, via 01-961 0868).
Although maybe not immediately devastating, this cool slinky slow subtle 74bpm 12in lovers rock swayer nevertheless sneaks up your trouser leg and seems set to be huge — in its relevant market at least. A Rodigan hot shot!

LUTHER VANDROSS: ‘Never Too Much’ LP (Epic EPC 85275).
The US smash title track, the only one off his debut solo set really to do anything disco-wise, is a lovely languidly pulsating soulful 110/55bpm swayer and will soon be out here on single too, at last.

AL JARREAU: ‘Closer To Your Love’ (Warner Bros K 17876T).
Low key but bumpily building complex 115bpm 12in jiggler with typical flights of vocal fancy, flipped by the older jerkily phrased scatting 116bpm ‘Love Is Real‘. So, where’s ‘Roof Garden‘?

PIG BAG: ‘Sunny Day’ (Y Y-12).
No sooner do I say it’s too short on 7in than this greet refreshingly freaky jagged 131-128bpm instrumental turns up on longer 12in! Incidentally, Imagination’s newie on 12in turns out to be 1bpm faster on both sides reviewed last week.

GAYNOR BUNCH: ‘Music’ (Smokey Joe SMJD 004).
Cymbal schlurped skittery 122bpm 12in wah-wah synth instrumental with an interesting quieter rhythm break and jazz-funk-ish feel, the very different beefier butch guys and rather reedy gals sung vocal 123-124bpm ‘Drop’ A-side being overly “disco”.

GLORIA JONES: ‘Tainted Love’ (Inferno HEAT 6).
Belatedly reissued, here’s the pounding frantic 162bpm Northern Soul original, on blue vinyl 7in.

THE ATLANTICS: ‘Stacks Of Soul’ (Mean MEAN 6).
Fast, furious, and surprisingly convincing 132bpm 7in medley of Memphis soul classics from the ’60s by Otis, Wilson, Sam & Dave etc, with an instrumental backing track flip that’s doubtless freakin’ ’em up North already.

ROD STEWART: ‘How Long’ (LP ‘Tonight I’m Yours’ Riva RVLP 14).
Obviously best for mobile/pop jocks, this excellent gradually winding up then rolling 58-116-117-118bpm revival of Ace’s oldie ends with some sustained acappella harmony chanting that’s great for mixers.

SIMPLE MINDS: ‘Sweat In Bullet’ (Virgin VS 451 – 12).
Good 109bpm white boys funker, on 4-track 12in and already hitting pop, usefully like Bowie s ‘Fashion’ and Queen’s ‘Dust’.

QUEEN & DAVID BOWIE: ‘Under Pressure’ (EMI 5250).
Not the fusion of ‘Fashion’ and ‘Dust’ it could have been, this disjointedly pent-up 114-115bpm 7in pause-filled jiggler is more pop than funk but will be big for many.

HOT GOSSIP: ‘Soul Warfare’ (Dindisc DIN 38-12).
BEF-produced surprisingly good tumbling and tapping 123bpm 12in version of Heaven 17’s song, certainly Gossip’s most convincing effort to date.

SPANDAU BALLET: ‘Paint Me Down’ (Reformation CHS 122560).
Amazingly boring 0-118bpm 12in bass bumbled smacker wastes the solid enough rhythm track with disappointingly dull vocals and a pedestrian tune.

PRETENDERS: ‘I Go To Sleep’ (Real ARE 18 S).
Simply sensational Dionne Warwick-style 49-51bpm 7in smoocher, a beautiful soulfully delivered song (written by Kink Ray Davies).

ISLEY BROTHERS: ‘Inside You’ (Epic EPC A13-1741).
Typical jaggedly jumping 127-128-129bpm 12in racer does all it’s ever going to do in the first minute but goes on anyway for another eight to waste vinyl that could more profitably been used for Richard ‘Dimples’ Fields.

MICHAEL ZAGER BAND: ‘Dr. Rhythm’ (EMI 12EMI 5238).
Mundane dull 111bpm 12in chunderer goes on and on asking “Is there a doctor in the house?” For this crud, Dr. Soul is out.

PATTI AUSTIN: ‘Every Home Should Have One’ (Qwest K 17874).
Dukes-penned (ie: Bugatti & Musker) catchily Michael Jackson-ish thudding steady 103bpm 7in throbber, flipped by Rod Temperton’s ‘Razzamatazz’ / ‘Stomp’ style 123bpm ‘The Genie‘.

QUINCY JONES: ‘Just Once’ (A&M AMS 8178).
James Ingram-sung dead slow 38bpm 7in smoocher, predictably the track from ‘The Dude’ to do best in the States, flipped by Rod Temperton’s Patti Austin-sung Michael Jackson-like bubbly 121bpm ‘Turn On The Action‘.

NEIL DIAMOND: ‘Yesterday’s Songs’ (CBS A1755).
Chick-echoing gently bouncy 97-0bpm 7in jogger, his best MoR dancer in a while.

THEME MACHINE: ‘Themes Ain’t What They Used To Be’ (BBC RESL 104).
Wright Orchestra-type but less punchy 7in medley of TV themes (including the BBC News jingle), useful enough MoR.

FRANK SINATRA: ‘Say Hello’ (Reprise K 14513).
Brassily kicking somewhat croaky 119-85-0bpm 7in big band MoR treatment of the Pan-Am commercial.

SYREETA: ‘Out The Box’ (LP ‘Set My Love In Motion’ US Tamla T8-376M1).
Great sparsely lurching chunky 117bpm funker with synth twiddles and heavy booming breaks, an amazing mix synched on into Teena Marie’s ‘Behind The Groove’ (out of which her newie then goes nicely).

JAKOB MAGNUSSON: ‘Meet Me After Midnight’ (LP ‘Jack Magnet’ Icelandic Steinar 841).
Blue eyed jazz-funker from Iceland’s Mezzoforte stable, this happily leaping vocal 117bpm jiggler being well worth checking, as are the AWB-ish jerky 111-0bpm ‘You’ve Got It‘ and the more specialist instrumental jazz ‘Shell Shock‘, ‘Lifesaver‘ and ‘Redneck Riviera‘.
