UNDERGROUND SOUL truly surfaced to confound the overground media last week when Maze sold out two terrific nights at Hammersmith Odeon after just one plug on Robbie Vincent’s Radio London show . . . Maze refresh the parts that mere boogie bands miss — by going back to gospel roots, disguised by a web of rhythm that’s far from traditional, they use subtly shifting simple repetition and Frankie Beverly’s superb sinuous vocal gymnastics to cut right through to the soul (it can be no coincidence his favourite singer is Sam Cooke) . . . Monday’s show was evidently recorded live, so maybe we can expect London’s very own version of ‘Joy And Pain’, the final encore of which was continued in acappella unison for a full two minutes by the audience (in fact it was only the band returning to wave goodbye which stopped it), to start up again spontaneously as people drifted out through the foyer — and then minutes later, Capital Radio’s John Sachs played the record … magic! . . . Funktion’s Peter Byfield obviously knew something we didn’t when he referred to himself as “the Freddie Laker of jazz-funk” — Funktion folded last week, leaving the future of their Barracuda club in some doubt (now then, who claims to be the “Tiny Rowlands of jazz-funk”?!) . . . Lenny Henry has rapidly recorded his ‘Katanga Rap’ . . . RCA picked up Stone ‘Time’ . . . KR reissue in a fortnight Lloyd Charmers superb lovers rock reading of Phil Collins ‘If Leaving Me Is Easy’ . . . Phonogram dropped Janet Kay . . . Bob James ‘Angela (Theme from Taxi)’ is due on 3-track 12in, Star Sound’s follow-up is (yawn) a Rolling Stones medley (how many of them have there been?), while in a fortnight after Easter there’s a new 12in by Herbie Hancock and also “D” Train’s revival of Dionne Warwick’s ‘Walk On By’ . . . I must emphasise that the purpose of DJs sending us charts is not to hype records received in the mail but to reflect true floor reaction to your current playlist, thus giving the lower end of both the UK Disco 90 and POD more stability, and enabling companies to advertise their disco hits with more confidence — instead of, as was the recent case, watching their record drop right out again after an initial high entry — hyping helps nobody if you aren’t getting genuine audience reaction — and if you really are playing all the rubbish received in the mail, the last person it’s helping is you . . . KEEP IT GOOD!

MAZE featuring FRANKIE BEVERLY: ‘Joy And Pain’ (Capitol 12CL 211).
With nothing to stop it being a pop smash as it’s rhythmically similar to ‘Roots’ (out of which it mixes superbly), this live-recorded terrific jittery soulful subtle 106-105bpm anthem has an acappella singalong finish and should break wide open now following their sensational shows here, especially on 3-track clear vinyl 12in, flipped by the lovely gentle 38½-0bpm ‘Happy Feelin’s’ and older equally lovely mellow 49bpm ‘Golden Time Of Day’. To continue your education, get the parent ‘Live In New Orleans’ album (EST-12156), with the full length ‘Joy And Pain’, chugging 105-106-105bpm ‘Southern Girl‘, hustling 118½-119-120bpm ‘Changing Times‘ and similarly sinuous long 97-98-100-101-99bpm ‘Feel That You’re Feelin‘ and 95-94-96-0bpm ‘The Look In Your Eyes‘. THE sound of ’80s soul, not to be missed.

BRASS CONSTRUCTION: ‘Can You See The Light’ (Liberty 12UP 652).
Randy Muller in an overdue style change has created a dynamite ultra-infectious skipping little 116-117-116-115-116bpm 12in smacker with a nagging simple synth riff and catchy “na na na” chants which explode into the title line, all of which the funk fans are lapping up even if some stick-in-the-mud jazzers are groaning, while it’s breezy enough to hit pop fans too.

STONE: ‘Time’ (Carrere CART 236).
Blatantly modelled on the Strikers ‘Body Music’ and synching like a bitch with “D” Train, this tick-tocking alarm clock introed 123(very start)-121-123-121-123bpm 12in shrill chix/gruff guys prodded synth grumbler is so dead simple it’s the right side of moronic to have wide appeal, the shorter 121-123bpm instrumental flip being useful for mixing too.

GOLDIE ALEXANDER: ‘Show You My Love’ (Project PRJX 1, via London).
Vari-synching synths perfectly out of Xavier ‘Love Is On The One’, this import smash punchily burbling 118-117-116-117-118-117bpm 12in smacker has powerful electronics including a catchy pin-table riff and a dynamite beat doubling break, while soulful Goldie (a guy) gets more to do on the nice mellow jogging 102bpm ‘Go Back‘ flip.

THE BREAKFAST BAND: ‘Tokyo Shuffle’ (Breakfast Music 12BM 101).
Lovely infectiously loping lightly melodic nagging jazz-funk instrumental skipper with steel drums taking the lead line, presumably still 117bpm on 12in (I haven’t had one), flipped by the much more specialist percussive busily Latin 104-0-107-108-107bpm ‘Broadside Rhumba’.

JUNIOR: ‘Mama Used To Say’ (Mercury MERX 98).
Our own young Norman Giscombe Jr is currently Top 5 US Soul and Disco and fast climbing Pop with this much stronger Tee Scott remix of his UK recorded 110bpm 12in comes-and-goes Michael Jackson-ish jolter, which has been surprisingly and undeservedly neglected here on import once the original domestic mix had died down. Mercury know how to break our soulsters Stateside it seems — they keep hitting there with Central Line too.

GILBERT GIL: ‘Palco’ (WEA K 79285T).
The gorgeous EWF-ish Portuguese scatted happy 0-109bpm bouncer has the MoR appeal of another Julio Iglesias, and is now on 3-track 12in flipped by the older more specialist and less freely flowing 105-106-108bpm ‘Maracatu Atomico‘ and frantically complex 118-124bpm ‘Samba De Los Angeles‘ — however, beware, as the B-side titles are printed in the wrong order!

MARK-E: ‘Let’s Get Married’ (Dolphin white label, via 01-639 8682 or Jetstar).
Frontline Orchestra-backed veteran of the original Specials line-up says “hello baby” to kick off a nice steadily lurching 39(intro)-82bpm 12in lovers rock swayer with a perennial romantic message, flipped by the equally attractive but harder 66bpm ‘Summer Dreamin’ with good guitar.

CHAS JANKEL: ‘Glad To Know You’ (A&M AMSX 8213).
Steadily chugging jittery 116bpm hypnotic pop-disco vocal thudder on 33 1/3rpm 12in, but sadly not in the superior much sought Disconet remix version, for ages now the top US gay disco hit, while previously overlooked here the eerily starting synth snicked and washed 116-117bpm ‘3,000,000 Synths‘ futurist instrumental flip of his earlier ‘109’ (AMSX 8173) is also warm Stateside.

DAVID BOWIE: ‘Cat People (Putting Out Fire)’ (MCA MCAT 770).
‘Chariots Of Fire’-ish very slow moodily starting then aggressively thundering 30-119bpm 12in Giorgio Moroder-prod-penned rock-disco chugger from an up-coming flick, obviously destined for much attention.

DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES: ‘Private Eyes’ (RCA RCAT 134).
Reissued straight bright hook-filled 121bpm 12in pure pop, remixed for the UK but lacking the last one’s blue-eyed soul appeal.

RAH BAND: ‘Perfumed Garden’ (KR KRT 5).
Despite punters having voted with their feet for the original 3-tracker’s ‘Winter Love‘, it’s been left off for this 2-track coupling of the radio-aimed pleasant Jones Girls-ish chix cooed 0-104/52bpm 12in gentle jazzy shuffler and the rather hurriedly over busy 124bpm remix of ‘Funk Me Down To Rio ’82‘.

BAR BOUND: ‘Barrack Room Ballads’ (Godfather SH-1T).
Hilarious in intent though awful in fact, this filthy 135-133-134-136bpm 12in medley of rugger song-type smut is rumoured to be by various well-known jazz-funk DJs including an Essex expatriate, his dog-loving South London pal, a bun eater, famous slimmer and boy wonder. Thankfully it could be hard to find!

THE TIME: ‘Get It Up’ (LP ‘The Time’ Warner Bros K 56947).
Long overdue UK release for the Prince-affiliated and inspired funksters, this thudding 112½bpm US hit and the excellent long precisely played 118-117-116-114-115-117-116bpm ‘The Stick‘ still getting requested by Americans, while the sparse 126bpm ‘Cool‘ is currently on 12in.

IMPORTS

THE McCRARYS: ‘Love On A Summer Night’ (LP ‘All Night Music’ US Capitol ST-12196).
Wayne Henderson produced (and, on this trick, trombone soloed) superb gently swaying classy cool 116-115bpm ticking pulsator by the gals/guys family singers, great synched out of Patrice Rushen, by far the best cut although ‘For You‘ is a pleasant breezy 0-106bpm jogger, ‘Night Room‘ a deliberate 95bpm brassy jiggler, and the title track a flashy fast 125bpm smacker.

JUDY ROBERTS: ‘Ole’ (LP ‘Nights in Brazil’ US Inner City IC 1138).
Good specialist Latin jazz set, ultra hot for those who are into it being this happily romping flashily scatting 139-141-143-141bpm leaper with ringing toned flying keyboards, guitar and percussion, ‘I Can’t Help It’ limping in next as a languidly drifting 48-98/49bpm meanderer.

JEFF LORBER: ‘Always There’ (LP ‘It’s A Fact’ US Arista AL 9583).
Apart from this brassily romping (revised 117-118-119-59-118-0bpm) jazz synth Ronnie Laws/Willie Bobo revamp, Tom Browne accompanies his co-penned beefily brassy but formless 120bpm ‘Full Moon‘ vocal funker and jerky 116bpm ‘The Magician‘, while ‘Delevans’ is a bubbly 99bpm subdued jiggler and other slowies are the huskily duetted 96/48bpm ‘Your Love Has Got Me’, 95/47bpm ‘Warm Springs’, 103/51bpm ‘Above The Clouds’, 40/81bpm ‘Tierra Verde’, and mushy vocal 92/46bpm title track.

CORNELIUS BUMPUS: ‘Saul’s Afar’ (LP ‘A Clear View’ US Broadbeach 2).
Quaintly named tenor saxist solos along with guitar and nice piano on one of those ever-popular freely flowing but rhythmically nagging 118bpm jazz-funk instrumentals, switching to flute and vocal for the c.164-86bpm title track samba skipper which glides into half time for a prettily picked guitar and bass finish, while ‘Set Me Down Easy’ is an old fashioned 0-126bpm vocal swinger with a familiar (Marvelettes?) lilt, and the rest are less accomplished vocals.

FRED PARRIS & THE FIVE SATINS: ‘Medley: Memories Of Days Gone By’ (US Elektra E-47411).
The 1956 originators of ‘In The Still Of The Night’ (New York City’s all time doo-wop anthem) with a glorious new 78-0bpm 7in medley of that and such other old doo-wop classics as ’16 Candles’, ‘Earth Angel’, ‘Only You’, ‘A 1000 Miles Away’, ‘Tears On My Pillow’ and ‘Since I Don’t Have You’.

CAMEO: ‘Just Be Yourself’ (LP ‘Alligator Woman’ US Chocolate City CCLP 2021).
I can’t believe that this 12in-promoed Prince inspired 125bpm funky lurcher is the strongest cut, but as its parent LP was the only new import to surface over the weekend I devoted my time to fresh air and the Boat Race instead. Sorry!

COFFEE: ‘Take Me Back’ (LP ‘Second Cup’ US De-Lite DSR 8503).
Disappointing so initially ignored, but belated slight support has appeared for this breezily empty 122-121bpm canterer, bounding 125-122-124-122-123bpm ‘My Turn To Burn‘, Chic-ish 114bpm ‘Purpose‘ and Tyrone Davis-ish Ecstasy Passion & Pain-originated 121-119bpm ‘I Wouldn’t Give You Up‘, while for me the 91/46-93bpm ‘Fantasy‘ is not only best of three slowies but of the whole lot.

LINDA CLIFFORD: ‘Don’t Come Crying To Me’ (LP ‘I’ll Keep On Loving You’ US Capitol ST-12181).
Michael Gore co-penned Irene Cara/Donna Summer-style electronically bounced 0-134bpm sparse wailer does indeed sound like a ‘Fame’ reject, and is huge in US gay discos.

SUN: ‘Turn Out The Light’ (LP ‘Let There Be Sun’ US Capitol ST-12204).
US soul radio aimed careful lethargic soul-funk set devoid of any real “party” material — in fact the best track is this atmospheric 38/77bpm smoocher — but as I did the numbers anyway other cuts are the 94bpm ‘Slamm Dunk The Ffunk‘, 92bpm ‘A Love Affair’, 108bpm ‘Super Duper Super Star’, 108bpm ‘I Wanna Be With You’, 114bpm ‘We’re Gonna Party Tonight’, 124bpm ‘Be My Lady’.

ALVIN FIELDS: ‘Special Delivery’ LP (US A&M SP-4890).
Michael Zager-produced competent but unexciting light voiced guy, with burbling 123bpm title track, tripping 117bpm ‘Lucky Number Seven‘, jerky slow 96bpm ‘Punk Funk‘.
