January 7, 1984: charts only.

Editor’s Note:
From James’s January 14th Odds ‘N’ Bods column:

I did well after Xmas, fell over in the gutter (on the rooftop car park at Doncaster’s Arndale Centre, of all romantic locations!) and strained a ligament in my ankle, which resulted in a relaxing week with my leg up!

This would explain the absence of reviews and Odds ‘N’ Bods this week…

  1. I notice ‘Encore’ by Cheryl Lyn making a very quiet debut right at the bottom of the disco chart – this became absolutely massive on a club level although I don’t think it was very big on the pop charts.

I also noticed a week or two ago JH mentioning he was only going to review brand new tunes and complaining that the “country cousins” with what he saw as an interest in “obscurities” from yesteryear being similar to the pursuit of rare old records on the northern soul scene.

I’d hardly call the tunes he’s talking about being played by “country cousins” as these tunes were played on the London pirates at the time and at central London clubs such as the Special Branch, and later on places like Doo at the Zoo etc as well as being universally played by all the jazz-funk dj’s out in the suburbs and Home Counties. You basically only got them played within about 40 miles radius of central London (plus Manchester/the North West) so hardly out in the sticks.

I think JH deejaying in Gullivers with its unique (often international audience) clouded his judgement there. And at this time generally there were no more oldies being played than at any other time – it was before my time but I know that tunes such as ‘Expansions’ (1975 but massive in 1979), ‘Dominoes’ and loads of other tunes back in the disco glory days of 1978-1980 were revived oldies.

However I admit it did eventually start to get a bit ridiculous with non-stop obscure latin jazz at other jazz (sometimes from as far back as the 1940s) being played at certain places but they were the exception not the rule. And that shouldn’t stop him reviewing the generally massive tunes in all the underground clubs I mentioned in my other post (Gilberto Gil, Sister Sledge, Special Delivery etc) just because they were revived or just discovered.

    1. “Dominoes” became massive all over again towards the end of the 1980s, doubtless aided by its sampling by Stetsasonic on “Talking All That Jazz”, while I think Cheryl Lynn’s “Encore” will go on to become the longest-running entry on the Disco Chart to date, hanging around for a whole 12 months, and beating the 44-week record currently held by “Oops Upside Your Head”…

    2. ‘Encore’ was never a big hit on the pop charts because CBS, who had the rights to release the track in the UK, refused to do so. Having been the home to so much great black music, the British label lost pretty much all interest in it from 1984 onwards. So ‘Encore’ became a sleeper hit. It was finally licensed to Streetwave, later in 1984, but by then it had lost any momentum and could only manage a lower chart placing.

James complained bitterly about the label’s policy and he wasn’t the only one – Tony Blackburn routinely scolded CBS on air in late 1985, when they were refusing to release Cherrelle & Alexander O’Neal’s ‘Saturday Love’. That was also lined up to be licensed to Streetwave, then CBS relented at the last minute and released it themselves … and it of course became a huge pop hit.
