September 22, 1984: “The UK’s first ever all-Compact Disc disco”, Stevie Wonder, Steve Washington, Gwen Pressley & Portable Patrol, Billy Ocean, Out

ODDS ‘N’ BODS

DONNA SUMMER seems unlikely ever to have another Hi-NRG hit after a US TV chat show appearance during which, talking about her Born-Again Christianity, she reportedly said “Homosexuals have brought AIDS upon themselves as a divine retribution from God for their sinful ways” — the instantaneous result is that outraged gay discos (her earliest supporters) have stopped playing her, and record stores are putting out rubbish skips with signs saying “Dump your broken Donna Summer disks here!” (I wonder what’s her opinion of the fire at York Minster?) … Radio London’s first Thursday Soul Night Out at Kilburn’s National Club had a surprise special guest, Stevie Wonder no less, who sang live to the 12in flip — the reason he now puts instrumental versions on his B-sides is “So if by some chance you see me somewhere and I come over your house and you have a little record player and we can get together for moment, I can sing to you” … aah! … Motown however have in typical incredibly irritating manner serviced DJs with double A-side white labels, so Stevie had better steer clear of mailing list clubs … Stevie and Junior are working on some songs together, and it was the latter’s manager Keith Harris who was behind Radio London’s windfall (he used to be Stevie’s personal assistant) — incidentally, the obviously chuffed Tony Blackburn has been insufferable ever since! … UK 12in prices have gone up to around £3, following the industry’s discovery that the buoyant 12in market now accounts for nearly a third of all singles sales —dealers seem upset at this attempt to milk and probably spoil the market. but the fact remains every 12in pressed uses the same pressing facility as a more profitable LP … Randy Muller finally remixed Brass Construction ‘International‘ for UK release soon … Island picked up Gayle Adams, and have Eugene Wilde anyway (through the Simplicious connection) … Rod Temperton co-produced the now January scheduled LP by Lionel Richie, whose ten to fifteen minute Olympics finale ‘All Night Long’ was seen in full by viewers in Eire (says Gerard Ryan of County Cork) — grrr! … Jellybean’s 5-track mini-LP will be out here early October, his ‘The Mexican‘ meanwhile topping US Dance/Disco … Diamond Time are launching a monthly video compilation for clubs, mixing assorted hot music with funny short links (like Ronald Reagan failing to do up his flies!) — Bruce Higham on 01-586 7056 is building the £37.50 per month subscription list, and is also ever on the lookout for fresh material … George Hargreaves, not unconnected with the Billy Ocean reissue, is compiling a club video mailing list at In Store Music, 3 Crownstone Court, Crownstone Road, London SW2 1LS .. Chris Kay (Tunbridge Wells) warns with experience that “wet T-shirt”-type risqué competitions can cause problems if winners later prove to have been under-age, and local newspaper publicity can quickly sour … Dru Baker hosts a Dance Yer Ass Off disco oldies Friday (21) at Burnham (-on-Crouch) Country Club Scandals, Capital’s Disco John Leech fills in for Kev Hill at Harlow Whispers Sat (22) party night … Paul Roberts Hi-fi hold possibly the UK’s first ever all-Compact Disc disco at Weston-Super-Mare’s hi-tech Piranha’s Tues (25), using two Philips CD 101 players and £4,000 worth of Bose amplification (free admission before 10.30pm) … Island’s Julian Palmer joins (brother of Mike) Brian Gardner at Soho’s Wag Club Wed (26) for “very mixed music” with a Cool Notes PA … Horizon Radio 102.55FM moved studios north of the river to Victoria, and reception has suffered since … Miami’s latin-soul station Super-Q has suddenly started playing lots of UK Hi-NRG imports … Earls Court Copacabana DJ/Hi-NRG producer Chris Lucas now manages the Record Shack shop —incidentally, Record Shack should realize their top act suffers from severe identity confusion, nearly every jock writing their name as “Break Dance” instead of Break Machine … I hope anyone watching last week ITV’s George Melly-introduced history of British traditional jazz, ‘Whatever Happened To Bill Brunskill?’, was struck by the remarkable parallels with the soul-jazz-funk scene — doubtless in years to come we’ll be seeing old films of Caister on learned TV programmes … I’m off on the JFM funk cruise to Holland — let’s hope it isn’t “rrrrough!” … CRY GOD FOR HARRY!

MASTER MIXERS Double Dee & Steinski (the latter, a/k/a Steve, centre) snapped talking razor blades and quick cuts with Disco Mix Club’s Tony Prince (right), at the New Music Seminar in New York. The duo’s prize-winning ‘The Payoff Mix’ of G.L.O.B.E. & Whiz Kid’s ‘Play That Beat Mr DJ’ is being revamped to meet copyright requirements for release here on Tommy Boy/Island, while the original, flipped by their ‘Lesson Two‘ James Brown mix, on their own privately circulated Double Dee & Steinski Mastermixes 12in is one of hip hop’s most highly prized collector’s items … rare on vinyl, if much dubbed off radio! HOT VINYL

STEVIE WONDER: ‘Love Light In Flight’ (LP ‘The Woman In Red’ Motown HH72285)
The Wonder-produced soundtrack’s hottest and classiest dancer is this gently pulsating 108⅓-0bpm jogger, while the (abruptly ending and seguing) 118bpm movie title track is one of Stevie’s jerkily lurching leapers, ‘Don’t Drive Drunk‘ a frantically rattling 1225bpm [sic] skitterer and ‘It’s More Than You‘ an instrumental 325/70bpm [sic] doodle (by guitarist Ben Bridges). The set is actually shared with DIONNE WARWICK, who solos on the nostalgically Bacharach & David-ish 81½/40¾-0bpm ‘Moments Aren’t Moments‘, duetting the gentle 92/46-0bpm ‘Weakness‘ and 75-0bpm ‘It’s You‘. Also of course now on 12in too is the (0-)113bpm extended ‘I Just Called To Say I Love You‘ (TMGT 1349), which in honesty could have used that remix as the edit where his vocoder comes in instead of the cha-cha-cha is kinds tacky.

STEVE WASHINGTON: ‘Please Don’t Go’ (Streetwave MKHAN 27)
Streetwave sensibly follow Holland’s Rams Horn label in salvaging from the Aurra guy’s disappointing album (mainly sung by Sheila Washington) this excellent remix of its one decent track, an 103(intro)-103-106bpm sinuously rolling repetitive chix chanted hypnotic cool swayer overlaid by tootling trumpets, flipped by its less dense slower 101½ (intro)-103½-104½bpm LP Version and the mushily drifting Slave-ish 115-113(start)-116-115-116-115-117-116bpm ‘Like A Shot‘, with yowling guitar last part. Steve, do an exhausted BPM-er a favour, buy a Linndrum!

GWEN PRESSLEY & PORTABLE PATROL: ‘Running’ (US Aerial AR69)
Slightly reminiscent of Stacy Lattisaw’s ‘Jump To The Beat’, this hot to trot noisily wailing jittery forceful smacker with brassy stabs and chanting girlie group breaks uses up much intense energy without actually ‘running’ rhythmically at all, in an 115bpm Club Mix and acappella-outroed 116bpm Long Club Mix.

BILLY OCEAN: ‘Caribbean Queen (No More Love On The Run)’ (Jive JIVER T 77)
‘European Queen’ finally re-released properly here under its hit American title, this ‘Billie Jean’-ish 114bpm chugger deserves another chance to emulate its amazing across-the-board US success. The flip has its ‘African Queen‘ variation (both billed as “new extended mixes”), and the subdued 109bpm ‘Dancefloor‘.

OUT: ‘Tough Enough’ (Illuminated Records ILL 4612)
Rather good if specialist solid sparse minimalist 110bpm funk, all tight backbeat and economical guitar, with bursts of perfectly compatible white boys vocal, and an even leaner 110¼bpm ‘Tough (Version)’ flip. Tough’s the word!

BRYAN LOREN. ‘Easier Said Than Done/Lollipop Luv (Turntable Mix)’ (Virgin VS 706-12)
Replacing ‘Lollipop Luv’ on the current 3-track 12in now is Mastermind’s totally “live” 120-119-120bpm interweaving of Bryan’s two original A-sides, very clever indeed apart from the “come on get it girl” scratch two-thirds through which loses tempo.

LOCAL BOY: ‘Thriller/Owner Of A Lonely Heart (Medley)’ (WEA YZ18T)
Much delayed UK release for the Club House-style clever (0-)122-0bpm Italian medley which sets the US chart-topping Yes vocal, and some of its freaky blasts, to the Michael Jackson backing track (inst on flip) — a pity it’s too late now to mix ‘n’ match with ‘Haunted House’!

EVELYN ‘CHAMPAGNE’ KING: ‘Just For The Night’ (US RCA Victor PW-13915)
Not terribly special but, for mixers, useful 116bpm wailing judderer in ‘Medicine Song/Plane Love’ style, produced by Hawk (although the name Wolinski isn’t in any credit), flipped by its instrumental T.V. Track (new in-vogue terminology) and The System-prod/penned sparsely jolting dull 0-119bpm ‘So In Love‘. Probably rightly, the UK 12in will be something different.

PATRICE RUSHEN: ‘Get Off (You Fascinate Me)’ (Electra E 9702T)
Belated UK release for the Dance Mix of her album’s slick 116bpm jotter, which didn’t have staying power then and still sounds none too special now despite added rattling percussion breaks (inst flip, and the older far more worthwhile 91bpm ‘Remind Me‘).

BOBBY WOMACK: ‘Surprise Surprise’ (Motown TMG 1353)
Delightful croakingly souled slow rolling 91-94bpm swayer with harmonica backing (for once NOT by Stevie!), only on 7in, flipped by the Martin Luther King-introed mournful 72⅓bpm ‘American Dream‘.

RANDY HALL: ‘Feel My Eyes’ (LP ‘I Belong to You’ US MCA-5504)
Ray Parker Jr-produced debut solo set by a light voiced gospel-grounded soulster (with a poodle haircut!), hottest though hardly an obvious dancer being this very pleasant gently jogging almost ethereal sinuous 112bpm pulsator, the slow swaying 90½bpm ‘A Gentleman‘ throbbing more purposefully.

DIANNE REEVES: ‘Sneaky’ (LP ‘For Every Heart’ US TBA TB-203-N)
Plummily sung sultry brassily tugged 102bpm jogger with searing Tom Scott sax and scatting climax, best of an otherwise very laid back set — through the trickily rhythmic ‘Heed The Signs (Of The Times)‘ could get jazz action.

NUMONICS: ‘Fox Trappin’ (US Hodisk H-1209)
For five weeks I’ve anticipated this, ever since Billboard’s reviewer wrote “What hath George Clinton wrought anyway … all these grown men barking into microphones?” A US black hit immediately after, it’s a traditional soul group driven by jittery 117bpm electro beats with nice harmony interplay, wailing — and indeed woofing — behind a fine comic lead (edit/inst flip), vocally timeless.

SKOOL BOYZ: ‘Slip Away’ (CBS TA 4568)
Ludicrously late UK release for early summer’s jittery 108½bpm hot tempo wriggler, which you’ll remember starts with that terrific boy/girl ‘phonecall question “Are you tied up tonight?” “No, but I’d like to be!” (inst flip).

VANITY: ‘Pretty Mess’ (Motown TMGT 1360)
The glamorous ex-leader of Vanity 6 herself wrote (and co-prod with Bill Wolfer) this seductively squeaked lightweight 126bpm Prince-ish tapper (inst flip), all about getting a man-made mess on her dress!

PRINCE & THE REVOLUTION: ‘Erotic City’ (US Warner Bros 0-20246)
Worth checking, an interesting jaunty 123bpm electronic chugger with vocals just like something by War (and lyrics about “creamy thighs”!), flip to the “preacher”-introed frantically rocking 0-196bpm ‘Let’s Go Crazy‘ which is his current US hit — whereas here we get the 0-57-56½-56-0bpm movie title track ‘Purple Rain‘ (Warner Bros W9174T), not unlike John Lennon agonising Bob Dylan’s ‘Knocking On Heaven’s Door’ for his Mother, flipped by gently doodling instrumental and ethereal vocal version of ‘God‘. All his recent B-sides seem not to be from the LP.

BILLY IDOL: ‘Flesh For Fantasy’ (Chrysalis IDOLX 4)
Even more an exciting marriage of heavy metal guitar with electro hip hop than was Run-D.M.C.’s ‘Rock Box’, this noisy 94bpm Below The Belt Mix isn’t for soul clubs but is rightly huge Stateside.

BOOKER NEWBERRY III: ‘I Get Romantic’ (Buzz International VIBE 6T, via Pinnacle)
Hoarsely soulful Booker sounds pretty typical on a friskily cantering 123bpm wriggler, like an electronically powered Philly romper (inst/edit flip).

CUTTY: ‘Naughty Times’ (US Hudson River Records HR 101)
Evidently much played by Chiltern Radio, this staccato chaps rapped/demure girls cooed gently burbling 115bpm swayer has some nice Band AKA-style sax, and boys’ talk dialogue halfway (inst flip), sneakily pleasant.

SAMMY DAVIS JR: ‘Hello Detroit’ (Motown TMGT 1351)
Berry Gordy gives Detroit its own ‘New York New York’, co-concocted by Willie Hutch, a bravura (0-)130-131-132bpm big band anthem (inst flip), useful MoR.

ALEEM: ‘Release Yourself’ (Streetwave MKHAN 26)
Ignore the unison chanted A-side, which I “passed” on twice until hearing the more excitingly electrofied dub flip full of freaky echo repeats and Juddering 116bpm hip hop beats, currently huge in New York (if specialist here).

THE EGYPTIAN LOVER: ‘Egypt, Egypt’ (US Freak Beat DMSR00661)
A-side of a 4-track 12in, this Californian fast 127bpm electro skitterer in dated Planet Patrol/Twilight 22 style isn’t as hot as the flip’s short rapped ‘n’ scratched 112bpm ‘What Is A DJ If He Can’t Scratch?‘, spare dry 121-122- 121bpm ‘And My Beat Goes Boom‘, fast-cut jittery 119bpm ‘The Ultimate Scratch‘.

BOBBY KING: ‘Close To Me’ (Motown TMGT 1347)
Pleasant relaxed breathy 83bpm duet with Alfie Silas, on 3-track 12in with the Jackson-ish clopping 125⅓bpm ‘Midnight Shine‘ and rock-disco 139bpm ‘Love In The Fire’.

Hi-NRG

JIMMY RUFFIN: ‘Young Heart (Hang On)’ (ERC ERCL 117)
Well worth investigation by traditional soul fans too, this far from “Hi-NRG” frisky infectious 130bpm bounder co-produced by Nigel Wright has an invigorating muscular yet airy drive full of subtle spaces, nice Jr Walker-ish sax and excellent soulful vocal, all really fresh and redolent of an earlier more innocent age. As well as an instrumental dub the 33⅓rpm flip has the 128bpm old Disconet remix of his Robin Gibb co-prod/penned 1980 hit, ‘Hold On To My Love‘.

VIOLA WILLS: ‘Gonna Get Along Without You Now (Celebration Dance Mix)’ (Touch 12TOU 5, via PRT)
Brand new overdubbed snappily cantering 0- 119bpm rhythm track somewhat swamping the original five years old vocal of her ‘I Will Survive’-styled hustling hit from October ’79 (Radio Mix flip), erratically greeted by DJs.

HEAT-X-CHANGE: ‘Thunder And Lighting’ (Passion PASH 1234)
Last weekend’s big puzzler for jocks who bought white label copies without any indication of the artist’s name, a zappily rippling and rattling chix chanted 0-131¾bpm pop galloper with unusual rhythm effects (more tightly compressed 0-132¾bpm inst flip).

LAURA BRANIGAN: ‘The Lucky One’ (Atlantic A9636T)
One of those slow singing started then rhythmic numbers, in this case a forcefully chugging 0-122bpm lurcher, the chunkier Jack White Mix flipped by a tinnily busy John Robie Mix (and the 141bpm ‘Breaking Out‘).

GIORGIO MORODER WITH PHILIP OAKEY: ‘Together In Electric Dreams’ (Virgin VS713-12)
Giorgio-produced speedy 129bpm rock-disco chugger, synth based but with buzzing guitar too (inst. flip).

  1. That’s a massive fall for Dr Beat’ from number 1 this week – what happened?
Also a big fall from Level 42 and after 5 years that’s basically the end of Level 42 as a jazz-funk group featuring in dance charts etc as they went at the most pop-dance from here on in. I think that’s why they eventually fell apart as despite the massive pop success I believe not all members were happy with leaving the funkier stuff behind.

    1. Yeah, that’s a dramatic fall for “Dr Beat”. I’ve cross-checked with the UK Singles Chart, and this was the week it reached its peak position (#6) after three consecutive weeks locked at #7. I suppose that by this stage, it was such a big pop hit that the cooler clubs were dropping it like a hot potato. I certainly remember it being ubiquitous, and blaring out of every crummy “fun pub” in town!

      1. I think part of the problem with ‘Dr Beat’ was a great dance track with initially cool credentials was made to look ridiculous courtesy of the ‘comedy’ video Epic came up with to promote it … which it didn’t really need.

Or maybe that was Gloria’s idea? She obviously liked fancy dress costumes, judging by the ‘Bad Boy’ video …

  2. Mystery time: what is the Lionel Richie/Rod Temperton collaboration a reference to? It seems to be referring to an album that never happened, because the follow-up to Can’t Slow Down wasn’t released until 1986, and there was no sign of Rod T on it. Were there sessions which took place and then got abandoned? If so, why?

I do recall that Motown approached Jam & Lewis about working with Richie – they let that slip in a 1986 interview – but I had no idea that Temperton was in the mix somewhere, too …
