The guys repeat their enduring underground smash ‘Outstanding’ bar for bar at 97bpm but now with a flavour of Fatback’s ‘I Found Lovin’’ – and as both are still instant floor fillers in black clubs this is off to a great start! – while ‘Disrespect‘ is a Woody Woodpecker-introed whistle blowing easily rolling and swaying 107¾bpm groove with chanting from halfway, ‘The Sun Don’t Shine Everyday‘ a particularly beautiful very delicate tenderly started 52/26bpm slow smoocher building in a Marvin Gaye influence (fragments of its instrumental link some other tracks), ‘I Believe‘ an interesting old fashioned yet Stevie Wonder-ish tortuous 73-0bpm weaver, ‘Beep A Freak‘ (the US 12in) a perfectly serviceable repetitive 114 ¼bpm P’funker, ‘Weak Spot‘ a rambling 106bpm soul swayer, their inevitable fast ones being the frantic 136½bpm ‘Video Junkie‘ and jerky 134½-137bpm ‘Don’t You Leave Me‘. Now, how about a megamix of ‘Outstanding’ and ‘I Found My Baby’ as UK 12in?

ASWAD: ‘Need Your Love (Each And Every Day)’ (Island 12IS 214)
Nice lazily soulful attractive 83bpm reggae swayer ending in its dub.

WARREN G BURRIS FEATURING MICHELLE: ‘I’ve Got It’ (US Becket Records BKD 524)
Chick ‘n’ chap souled 120bpm jitterer, blandly uninvolving (Master Mix flip).

MAGNUM FORCE: ‘Cool Out’ (US Paula Records PAULA 1244)
Nice to see the Shreveport, Louisiana, label’s old ’60s design still in use on this Willie Henderson co-produced deadly simple cool 118½bpm chugging funk groove with just some butch bass muttering as vocal, less gimmicky than the Dazz Band but similar in idea, the flip’s different more rolling 119-118- 117½bpm ‘Get In The Mix‘ being virtually instrumental and equally sparse. This could be an embarrassment to Bluebird, who by now should have just released Magnum Force’s older 1982 Kelli-Arts recorded ‘Share My Love’ LP (Bluebird/10 LPBR 1002), which even two years ago must have sounded pretty dated with several slow sweet vocal group meanderers and the churning 119-120½bpm ‘Girl You’re Too Cool‘, brassily jolting 112½-113½bpm ‘A Touch Of Funk‘, 115bpm ‘Oh You Just (Look So Good)‘, sorta Mass Production-ish.

CLAIR HICKS AND LOVE EXCHANGE: ‘Push (In The Bush)’ (US KN Records KN 1002)
As mentioned. Greg Carmichael & Shep Pettibone have remade Musique’s memorably smutty 1979 disco hit at a far slower chugging 111bpm tempo with some scratching and chattering electro beats (in five versions), a bit stolid now though currently of course much more useable.

BMP: ‘Let Me Show You’ (US Epic 49-05138)
Beats Minute Per? Produced by Sharon & Pennye’s brother Gene Redd, this stereo acappella introed chaps-sung fiercely snappy 123¾-124¾(break)-125½bpm fast jitterer makes up in pace what it lacks in polish and should work out of ‘Lovergirl’ or ‘Say Yeah’ … and coincidentally ‘Say Yes‘ is the flip, a lovely 62-0bpm smoocher full of lush atmosphere.

MIKKI featuring STARZ: ‘Dance Lover’ (US Renaissance Recording 12-1125)
Nick Martinelli co-produced rather strong soulful Vandross-ish chap sung and then chick squawked classy 120bpm roller with neat backing and good stereo separation especially during the long lead in (dub/edit flip). If Mikki’s the girl, who’s hiding as Starz?

RICK DEES: ‘Get Nekked’ (US Atlantic 0-86916)
The ‘Disco Duck’ guy, actually a top US radio DJ, returns on a brassily jiggling 113-112½bpm take-off of ‘Ghostbusters’, looser and funkier than Ray’s with a party atmosphere and lots of voices chipping in around trombone solos and dated almost go-go drums (inst flip and funny slow ‘Eat My Shorts‘).

ISLEY JASPER ISLEY: ‘Serve You Right’ (LP ‘Broadway’s Closer To Sunset Blvd’ Epic EPC 26307)
Isley Brothers guitarist Ernie, bassist Marvin, and synth-wielding Chris Jasper have splintered from the rest to do their own thing, only the vocal quality having altered on this ‘Between The Sheets’-ish 82/41bpm slow roller and the cool ticking relaxed swaying 108⅓bpm ‘I Can’t Get Over Losin’ You‘, ‘Sex Drive‘ being a chix chorused 119bpm funk jitterer – however, unbelievably ‘Kiss and Tell‘ is 130bpm Hi-NRG, while the 119bpm ‘Look The Other Way‘ is pure Police, (0-)35/70-0bpm ‘Love Is Gonna Last Forever’ a pop ballad, 125bpm ‘Break This Chain’ and the 126-0bpm title track raw rock, all the latter lacking personality (in fact the perfect soundtrack for TV’s otherwise enjoyable ‘Legmen’ series!)

JULIE ROBERTS: ‘I’m So Glad’ (Bluebird/10 BR 12)
Very impressively sung almost Sade-like bluesy bass and hi-hat kicked 79½bpm self-penned gospel slowie, 7in flip to a mournful ‘The Old Rugged Cross’ presumably aimed at ‘Stars On Sunday’.

DAVID SANBORN: ‘Love And Happiness’ (Warner Bros W9105T)
Sax started “live” (0-)102-103-105 (incl. break)-0bpm vocal revival of Al Green’s, true to the original Hi Sound, flipped by two more jazzy live tunes from the upcoming ‘Straight To The Heart’ LP.

GEORGE BENSON: ’20/20′ (US Warner Bros 7-29120)
Russ Titelman produced scat started tricky stop-start Al Jarreau-ish jittery spurter about his hindsight being 20/20 vision, not a particularly good dancer, with a Tommy LiPuma-prod doodling guitar instrumental ‘Shark Bite‘ flip on 7in ahead of the LP (which won’t now be here until Jan 25).

ANANSI: ‘Funky G’ (LP ‘Anansi’ Ebusia EBUS 1, via 01-748 0016)
African saxist George Lee (no longer A Nancy!) presents an excellent if specialist afro-jazz fusion set with the emphasis switching in both directions to ethnic rhythms and blowing jazz, initially most accessible probably being this straightforward 118-119bpm jazz-funker, the fast jazz 128-131bpm ‘Simone‘ and ‘Sakhile’-ish 92-93½bpm ‘Nakinye’ (his recent ‘Sea Shells‘ A-side is not included).

TONY JACKSON: ‘Snowy White Christmas’ (Cedar 12XMAS-1, via PRT)
Dangerously addictive truly slushy 73bpm slowie sung in Johnny Mathis-type tones before a long fruity sax break, much played on soul radio – who may later briefly flip for the funkier less together 113bpm ‘New Year’s Resolution‘ B-side.

THE TREACHEROUS THREE: ‘Santa’s Rap’ (Sugarhill SHL 138)
Kool Moe Dee, Special K & LA Sunshine’s bitterly humorous jittery 105½bpm rap from ‘Beat Street’, a message more about ghetto life than Christmas, has been de-bleeped with a few words changed in transfer from LP to 12in and could got renewed interest especially in its reference to human beat box Dougy Fresh (inst flip).

BOUW KOOL: ‘Merry Christmas/Happy New Year’ (Master-Funk 7MF 006)
Funk Masters-backed basic 101½bpm rap originally released just a little too late last year (inst flip).

KoKo-PoP: ‘I’m In Love With You’ (Motown TMGT 1363)
Months after the Chris Powell-led new foursome’s debut LP met minimal reaction this attractively arranged strings twiddled 123bpm trotter is now climbing the US soul chart but may prove too subtle and brisk here despite an excellent Michael Jackson-ish lead vocal, unless radio gets behind it … in which case it would do a Windjammer.

THOMAS McCLARY: ‘Contagious’ (LP ‘Thomas McClary’ US Motown 6121ML)
Another, guitar playing, Commodore self-prod/pens his solo debut set and while it all sounds good ‘n clean some is ultimately empty, this Ashford & Simpson-ish frisky 120bpm bumper being duetted by Deborah Thomas who also joins Lionel Richie and more in helping on the gently starting breathily intensifying catchy 94⅔bpm ‘Thin Walls‘ (eventual hit cut?), others being the snappily jolting 116bpm ‘Man In The Middle‘, chunkily lurching 113bpm ‘Gonna Get You Back‘, fast 126⅓bpm ‘Read Between The Lines‘, frantic 126bpm ‘Wild Imagination‘, while inevitably Richie-esque slowies are the 0-33-67bpm ‘Love Will Find A Way’, 0-37/74bpm ‘Marianne’.

LITTLE BENNY & THE MASTERS: ‘Who Comes To Boogie’ (US Jem-Rose JR 914)
From Washington DC, home of the percussive go-go beat, this typical “say what?” rapped 109bpm brassy jitterer has the same rhythm and sound as Chuck Brown’s ‘We Need Some Money’ but not enough of a song — as a groove though it’s great, with a largely instrumental Club Mix (edit too).

R.E.Q.: ‘Casa Forte’ (Passion PASH 1237)
Nigel Wright-produced “jabadaba”-scatted ultra-specialist frantic 0-142-144-147bpm latin jazz, flipped by the more Shakatak-ish smooth slick instrumental 120bpm ‘Valparaiso’.

JIMMY YOUNG: ‘Twenty Four/Seven’ (Streetwave MKHAN 33)
Rather dull rumbling 113bpm plodder which owes a teensy tiny bit to the ‘Holiday’ chord structure but borrows none of its vivacity (inst/edit flip). If you remember, it was the instrumental of his ‘Times Are Tight’ which happened here before — lightning won’t strike twice.

LEMURIA: ‘Thunder In Your Love’ (Street-Level CRT 70, via Creole)
New York sessioneers’ rather anonymous burbling 117½bpm strutter with muffled vocals, stabs of rock guitar and a slight ‘Bertha Butt’ flavour (inst flip).

PAPA LEVI: ‘Big ‘N’ Broad’ (Island 12IS 208)
“Please fasten your seat belts”-introed clever tongue-twistingly toasted but very ethnic 0-93bpm reggae, similar 0-81bpm ’84 ‘tion’ flip, not as catchy as Smiley Culture.

THE BLACKSTONES: ‘Mighty Long Time’ (PRT 12P 319)
Chi-lites inspired rhythmically limp lightly reggaefied 85(intro)-91-92-93-94bpm sweet soul harmony shuffler, pleasantly sung.

CARL SMITH: ‘Come Back Lover’ (US Clarence Music Records CM 532)
Huskily souled spacious clean base bumbled 119bpm backbeat socker with synth-chording, sparse breaks, pleasant if not terribly gripping (Club Mix flip).

FUTURE SHOCK: ‘Hip Shakin’’ (US Becket Records BKD 525)
Purposeful slow 109bpm Rick James-ish funk, a well worn still effective though this time none too startling groove (inst flip).

WHODINI: ‘Freaks Come Out At Night’ (US Jive/Arista JD-1-9303)
Now a hot property Stateside, the guys follow their ‘Friends’ smash with another 101bpm narrative rap probably better for listening (inst flip and 108bpm ‘Grandmaster Dee’s Haunted Scratch‘ based on ‘Magic’s Wand’).

JOHN ANDERSON BIG BAND: ‘Glenn Miller Medley’ (Modern Records MOD 006)
One of the most useful, ballsiest recorded, un-gimmicky and timeless MoR party singles to surface in a long time, this twist beat introed quickstepping 191bpm 7in medley is flipped by an equally useful slow 72-0bpm ‘Scot’s Medley’. Mobile Jocks should check it, pronto — you’ll be playing it for years! I cannot emphasize enough how useful this is going to be.

THE SWING COLLECTION: ’42nd Street’ (Hobo HOS 025, via PRT)
Perfect alter Maureen McGovern’s ‘The Continental’ at MoR gigs, a chap-sung foxtrotting 97/194-0bpm 7in revival of the ’30s classic (the original soundtrack tapdancing version used to be on UA).

JOHNNY LISTER & HIS SHUFFLE BAND: ‘Reginela Campagnola’ (Masterchord MCS 414, via PRT)
Golden trumpet tootled prancealong cha cha cha-ish 130bpm 7in knees-up jollity, possibly best started after the intro at the trumpet itself.

GRACE: ‘Dr Rhythm’ (WEA U9402)
Phonetic chix chanted typical Gibson Bros/Ottawan-type 117⅓bpm 7in Europop frolic, big on the Continent a while back but good now out of Sandy Marton ‘People From Ibiza’.

Blatant 0-120bpm copy of Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Will Survive’ style (inst flip), briefly imported from Holland though actually English.

TABU Featuring DEBBIE SHARP: ‘I’m On My Way’ (Crystal City CRITY 2, via 01-653 2386)
Chick squawked resonantly splurging 128bpm electronic canterer reviving Dean Parrish’s northern stomper (inst flip).

TOUCHDOWN: ‘Do You Need Me’ (Krack SUE 100T, via Pinnacle)
Two back-to-back mixes of the same song, Ian Levine’s typically rattling 123⅓bpm Hi-NRG Mix making it a simple galloper with caterwauling chick joining in, while Froggy’s beefier 122bpm Street Level Mix gives the rhythm an entirely different emphasis — trouble is, the song and male singer aren’t really strong enough for Froggy’s weightier approach.

MARIA VIDAL: ‘Body Rock’ (EMI America 12EA 189)
Jellybean remixed quite subdued 120bpm Irene Cara-ish rock-disco title song from yet another American dance movie. Yup, disco sure is dead!

JULIE: ‘I’m In Love With Michael Jackson’s Answerphone’ (Calibre CABL 129)
One of the many singles PRT slip out without telling anyone, this recent minor US hit is a ‘Billie Jean’-based but far friskier 134bpm teenager-squeaked ditty using Michael Jackson’s — and Jim Rockford’s! — answerphone message (inst dub flip), good fun.

VARIOUS: ‘Non Stop Passion Volume 1‘ LP (Passion NOSTO 1)
Continuously mixed by John Davies & Nigel Stock, who don’t only blend the tracks but also cleverly drop in title lines from other songs featured later, Side One starts at 136bpm with Marsha Raven ‘Catch Me’, Charade ‘Got To Get To You’, Café Society ‘Somebody To Love’, Dee Dee Martin ‘Save Yourself For Me’, Nicci Gable ‘Strange Desire’, Astaire ‘Love Trap’ (ending cold), Side Two starts at (0-)136⅔bpm with Charade ‘Break Me’, Norma Lewis ‘Give Me Back My Heart’, Paul Parker ‘Desire’, Jessica Williams ‘(They Call Me The) Queen of Fools’, Fantasia ‘Evergreen’, Charade ‘I’m The One’ (fade).
