ODDS ‘N’ BODS
MORGAN KHAN, “Britain’s Berry Gordy” still looking for “Britain’s Michael Jackson”, offers aspiring black music acts an instant talent assessment and the chance of cost-price use of Westside Records’ recording studio (if not an actual contract) if they turn up between 6-7pm any Mon/Wed/Friday at his new Ealing office in Springbridge Mews (just around the corner off Haven Green from the old Streetwave office): incidentally, Westside is indeed the outlet for his own artistes — debuting on June 1 with Faze One’s lispingly spoken sinuous bubbly 89⅔bpm ‘Good Friends‘ — but in fact his first singles, including Cultural Vibe, are out next week on the Hardcore label, the outlet for licensed product … Bobby Womack would appear now actually to have covered Living In A Box for US release anyway … BBC Radio Bristol’s previously announced 1987 West Of England Rapping & Mixing Contest is now on June 18 so as not to clash with election day, hosted by Tristan Bolitho at Bristol’s Studio in Frogmore Street with prizes of equipment and appearances — to enter, send in the application form that’s widely available at the area’s record shops and BBC local stations, then turn up for preliminary heats at 2pm that afternoon, DJs with their records for a seven minute set, rappers with a backing cassette for a three minute session … Mike Rice and Andy Rolfe’s habit of playing local mix fans’ home-produced megamix tapes on their Friday nights at Downley’s Masters has grown into a proper Mastermix ’87 contest to find the best mixer in Bucks and Berks — get your eight minute mix tapes to Mike at The Masters, Belfield Shopping Parade, Downley, nr High Wycombe, Bucks, so that over the next few Fridays they can be whittled down to Just four for the finals on Wednesday June 24, when the finalists will be judged live as well as on tape for a first prize gold disc donated by Nine O Nine (Mike himself hopes then to beat the current record of mixing 16 song titles in two minutes) … Portrait’s subsidiary dance label Up Beat, although used already on some promos, will actually be launched in July with a reissue of the O’Jays’ ‘My Favourite Person’ rare groove … ‘Rare Grooves’ is an obvious marketing concept under which labels can repackage any old material, and Jam Today has done just that with a six-track unremixed album of old Elite singles (CHIL LP 1), including Atmosfear of course, the only one actually attracting interest being Touch’s 126¾bpm bounding synth instrumental ‘Keep On‘ and Dave Chambers’ 102⅚bpm jazz saxing of Jean Carn’s ‘Don’t Let it Go To Your Head’ … Arista are reissuing Tom Browne ‘Funkin’ For Jamaica’ to meet demand … Jesse James, who back in the Seventies had soul hits like ‘Believe In Me Baby‘ on 20th Century Fox, is the singer and not Harvey Scales on ‘I Can Do Bad By Myself’ (reviewed last week) … Maxx Kidd tells me Trouble Funk have done vocals for Bootsy Collins on a “computerised funk” record, not go go … Jonathon More cold cuts KISS-fm’s Saturday afternoon ‘Meltdown Party’ show, and this Saturday (23) Meltdown meets Shake & Fingerpop with special Northern guests Colin Curtis and Pete Haigh in Brixton’s St Matthew’s church crypt from 11pm … Sunday (24) The Stammer at Northfleet’s Red Lion has a 6pm funk ‘n’ jazz barbecue with such as Pete Tong, Nicky Holloway, Eddie Gordon, Gilles Peterson … Bank Holiday Monday (25) New Brighton RJ’s hold a noon-2am charity soul all-dayer with Pez Tellett, Jon Jessop, Desa, Steve Proctor, Greg Wilson and more, while a bit later Livewire’s 5pm-1am ‘long-dayer’ at Great Yarmouth Tiffanys stars Chris Hill, Robbie Vincent, Froggy, Pete Tong, Jeff Young, Kev Hill, Trevor Fung – is this a “Caister reunion”?! … Monday also actually sees an up-to-date Caister reunion at St Ives Recreation Centre in Bedfordshire with Graham Gold, Bob Masters, Chris ‘Charlie’ Brown and more … Monday too, Keith Williams’ fortnightly Soul Spectrum covers the past 25 years’ black music at Nantwich Cheshire Cat … Tuesday (26) Brian Davies hosts a house party at the heart of house nation, Stourport-on-Severn Plato’s … Chris Hill, in a low key way, returns with Kev Hill to Canvey Island’s Goldmine on June 12 to start a Friday soul season … Croydon’s ex-Skyline Radio DJ Nik Love is now successfully souling in South Wales at Blaenavon’s Imperial Club (normally known as Imps) Hammersmith Palais when it reopens after a £2½m refit will be known, very posh, as Le Palais, Hammersmith (or should that be ‘Ammearsmeeth?) … East Anglia has its own ‘Groove Weekly’-like soul fanzine, complete with spelling mistakes, the monthly issued ‘The Gap’ by post from 225 Queen Ediths Way. Cambridge CB1 4NJ), May’s copy including interesting observations about rare grooves, and a visit to Cleveland, Ohio … Ray Young (Great Barr) is among many who always want to know how to find record company addresses: easy, buy the Music Week Directory 87, available for £12.50 (payable to Music Week) from Sylvia Calver, Morgan-Grampian plc, Royal Sovereign House, 40 Beresford Street, London SE18 6BQ … Capital Radio’s evening drive time man Peter Young joins me in suggesting again to A&M that a reissue of Chris Montez ‘The More I See You‘ could “do a Tom Jones” … LAH DE DAH DE!
HOT VINYL
ALEXANDER O’NEAL ‘Fake’ (Tabu 650891 6)
Jam & Lewis stir together their current production tricks, season them with a hefty dose of purple pepper and then pour them into a mould that was originally cast 30 years ago by the 5 Royales’ equally emphatic ‘Think‘ (better known by James Brown). The result is a dynamically burbling jittery 111½bpm chugging lurcher (in five mixes), a jauntily driving groove but with too monotonous a muttered, moaned and roared vocal line to have real crossover penetration — except that, as every O’Neal fan is going to be buying this brand new fresh biscuit as soon as it hits the shops on May 26, it’ll probably be one of those unexpected instant top 20 entries that takes Radio 1 by surprise!
DEREK B ‘Rock The Beat’ (Music Of Life NOTE 3)
In the UK’s most credible hip hop effort to date, London DJ Derek Boland cuts up James Brown beats into an infectious jiggly 101bpm rap – and all the rapping is by him too, multi-tracked! — that’s right in there now with his confusingly near namesake Eric B (three dubs too). FFFFurrresh!
LL COOL J ‘I’m Bad’ (Def Jam 650856 8)
Borrowing some ‘Shaft’ and ‘Dragnet’ resonances complete with cop car radio effects (and a “mother” that radio will never play!), this aggressively rapped scratching violent dense 0-89½bpm bass pusher is a sonic whirlwind of excitement, flipped by the live frantic 101 bpm ‘Get Down‘ and older emptily jittering 89½bpm ‘Dangerous‘. Baaaad!
STRAFE ‘Outlaw’ (Breakout USAT 606)
Now billed as The Bandit Mix, Les Adams’ A-side mix (and dub) of the Arthur Baker-produced here 0-118bpm lively leaping zany (Zane Gray?) galloper is a glorious frantic groove with Steinski-type dialogue cut-ups, chipmunks and repeated vocal phrases. Strafe was the originator of ‘Set It Off’, and revives its cymbal schlurping hi-hat hiss for the also included over-busy (0-)115½bpm ‘Strafe’s Groove’.
FATBACK BAND ‘Naughty Dancer’ (US Vista Sounds International VS INT 08)
This nervily tapping and jittering slinky 107bpm wriggler with surging choruses and a lazy piano break between muttering, chuckling and panting by a guy and girl is the denser side, while a similar lighter rhythm drives the more loosely swaying girl and guy alternated 108½bpm ‘(Feel The) Rhythm Of The Night‘. Take your choice.
TOM JONES ‘It’s Not Unusual’ (Decca FX 103)
As promised, here on 12 inch are both the original 182-184-186-188bpm hip-swinging soaring brassy baion from 1965 and a neat 182-184-186-184-188bpm extended re-edit by Les Adams (in no way remixed), plus the live version which Woking DJ Jim McKeown started using and Chris Brown then adopted for the jazz room at Caister! Faster, the 197-199-203bpm live treatment is immediately followed by the 183-187-189-187-0bpm ‘Land Of 1000 Dances’ before a 207bpm instrumental reprise of ‘Unusual’ vamps out of the applause to a fade. Another reissued number one?
RONNIE McNEIR ‘Love Suspect’ LP (Expansion Records EXLP 1)
At last widely available, the real soul singing keyboardist’s much sought set is largely full of lovely undulating mellow weavers, like the 95⅓bpm title track, ‘Risin’ To The Top’-type 94bpm ‘Everybody’s In A Hurry‘, 101⅔bpm ‘I’ll Be Loving You‘, 78bpm ‘Sexy Mama’, 88bpm ‘Trying To Keep My Head’, 95⅔bpm ‘Please Come And Be With Me’, lightly wriggling 121¾bpm ‘Follow Your Heart’. However, the standouts, much played on radio, are the gently swaying 96⅓bpm ‘Summertime Medley‘ which incorporates the Temptations’ ‘It’s Growing’ and the Natural Four’s ‘Can This Be Real’, and – especially – the fabulous happily romping 131¾-0bpm ‘Lately’ piano swinger that’s like Richard ‘Dimples’ Fields singing ‘Jazz Freak’!
MANU DIBANGO ‘Makossa ’87 (Big Blow)’ (Urban URBX 2)
The Cameroonian saxist’s Seventies afro-jazz-funk classics resurface yet again, ‘Soul Makossa’ and ‘Big Blow’ now being combined by producer Bill Laswell into a Sly & Robbie, Herbie Hancock, Hugh Masekela, Bootsy Collins-backed and D.ST-scratched new 116¾-116⅔-117-116⅔-116¾bpm jittery long honking and muttering groove (from a 1986 French LP).
THE BLOW MONKEYS with CURTIS MAYFIELD ‘(Celebrate) The Day After You’ (RCA MONKT 6)
Not so incongruous a teaming when you consider some of the dodgy duets superstars get involved in these days, Curtis and Dr Robert trade lines to a thunderthumbed jittery percussive pounding 116½bpm beat that dominates everything anyway, with pizzicato strings adding a little Mayfield flavour of old.
THIS IS HOUSE! ‘Control —More Of It!’ (US Obscure Records OB-87124)
Rather good strangely exciting episodic 118½bpm house throbber with different breaks and voices washing through as it progresses purposefully to no particular destination, with if anything an even brighter B-side Import/Export Version.
WAR ‘Low Rider (Remix)’ (LA International XLAX 100, via PRT)
Excuse me while I mention their name, this Beastie Boys-revived friskily trotting harmonica honked percussive choogler from 1975 is obviously a timely re-release and stays closest to the included 141-139½-138½-137-136bpm original in Simon Harris’s 0-142¼-143-138½-141-140½-0bpm remix, Arthur Baker’s violently mechanical 142-140½-140-138½-138-137-136½-136-135-136½-138-136-0bpm virtual remake losing the feel, while completing the 33⅓rpm four-tracker is the slinkily jogging original 0-87-88-90⅔-93bpm ‘Slippin’ Into Darkness’. You can see why I’ve taken time to BPM ‘em!
LESLIE DRAYTON & FUN ‘Innuendos’ LP (US Esoteric Records ER-1005)
Two separate jazz band albums led by horn-blowing Leslie surfaced simultaneously a year ago, and now his new primarily listening set has a terrific jiggly trotting 106-106¼bpm ‘It’s Time To Get Up’, bouncily combining Herb Alpert’s old ‘Rise’ with jaunty go go beats and the Al Jarreau-ish scatting and slurring of singing percussionist Derf Reklaw. Take a bow, Fred Walker!
JANET JACKSON ‘The Pleasure Principle (Long Vocal Remix)’ (Breakout USAT 604)
Still sounding awfully like Sheila E’s ‘The Glamorous Life’, Shep Pettibone’s 117⅓-0bpm remix of this rattling and rumbling lively leaper races excitingly along through a heftily whacking backbeat (dub/acappella flip).
ATLANTIC STARR ‘Always’ (Warner Bros W8455T)
Sweet slushy though nice enough 65⅔bpm duet, huge in America and a sensible choice of single here for radio despite ‘Let The Sun In‘ being their album’s aptly titled floorfiller (inst flip, plus the Barbara Wethers-sung pleasant 89⅓bpm ‘I’m In Love‘, not on LP).
DIANA ROSS ‘Dirty Looks’ (EMI 12 EM 2)
Luther Vandross turns out to be writer/producer (not apparent from an acetate label!) of this disjointedly rambling percussively tapping slightly Living In A Box-ish 108⅔bpm breathy weaving swayer (inst/beats flip), but there’s nothing else as credible on her new album despite its calculatedly being called ‘Rhythm + Blues’ in an effort to win back her roots audience.
WHITNEY HOUSTON ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)’ (Arista RIST 1)
Swamped in a messily over-busy frenetic mix, this jerkily spurting 118½bpm skittery wriggler has had instant acceptance from radio-weaned pop crowds and, in general, a deserved thumbs down from the soul mob.
MIKI HOWARD ‘Imagination’ (Atlantic A9284T)
The Johnny Burke and Jimmy Van Heusen-penned standard gets a lovely timeless wee small hours 0-71/35½-0bpm sophisticated smooth treatment with strings, sax and soaring faultless voice, possibly another ‘Saving All My Love For You’ (edit too, and lightly chugging 112bpm ‘You Better Be Ready To Love Me’).
THE MOVEMENT featuring Lee Genesis ‘Magic’ (Debut DEBTX 3023)
Tommy Musto-produced attractively surging and leaping almost northern soul-ish nervous skittery 121½-121⅘-122-0bpm house canterer (in three mixes).
JM SILK ‘She’s So Far Away’ (RCA PT 49714)
Urgently churning 125-0bpm pusher with rolling bass booming away, brassy twiddles and digital chipmunks between the mournful Abrams-ish moaning, more pop than house now, flipped by a newly preambled 125¾bpm instrumental of the old ‘I Can’t Turn Around’ and Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley’s 121½bpm ‘Jack Your Body’.
ROZLYN SORRELL ‘Sucker For Candy’ (US Atlantic 0-86754)
Paul Simpson-created gradually building fluid bass driven 112⅔bpm shuffling New York loper with many spacious breaks around inconclusive bursts of shrill staccato warbling, in three similar mixes plus two more differently treated bassier stark 115¾bpm dubs (the Sucking and Sucker Mixes).
HONEST DOCK and MISTER DRIVER ‘The Spell’ (Jam Today JAXX 1)
Hard to classify pop-slanted 116½bpm wriggly instrumental burbler with hi-NRG percussion, house bass, Steinski-type repeated spoken phrases, digital chiming chipmunks (in three mixes).
LIVING IN A BOX ‘Scales Of Justice’ (Chrysalis LIBX 2)
Sadly mundane in comparison with their eponymous debut smash, this lurching brassy 111⅓bpm thudder ends up much the same though less distinctive and more like an ordinary pop record (in two Arthur Baker mixes).
PEPSI & SHIRLIE ‘Goodbye Stranger’ (Polydor POSPX 865)
Stridently wailed 125bpm pop canterer, flipped more interestingly by Phil Harding’s Mel & Kim-ish house styled 123½bpm ‘Heartache (Club Mix)’, and the pleasantly cooing 117bpm ‘Dreaming’.
LEE PRENTISS ‘Sweetheart (Miami Mix)’ (Funkin’ Marvellous Records 12MARV 7)
This juddery bashing 114½bpm percussive nagging shrill lurcher, a cover of Rainy Davis’s US hit ‘sleeper’ from last year, will benefit from Lee’s UK club PAs and is flipped by her 118½bpm Mark Berry-mixed ‘U + Me (The Einstein Song)‘ plus the older more soulful calmly striding 114½bpm ‘Love This Way‘.

Despite James’s thumbs-down, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” actually did OK in the disco chart, but I didn’t rate it at all at the time either. Little did we know that it would go on to become perhaps the most popular 1980s floor-filler of all, for non-specialist crowds and at wedding discos; if a Prosecco Mum asks you to “play some Eighties”, you KNOW that what she really means is “play Whitney Houston”, and you also know that her 20 year-old daughter will love it just as much.
The Blow Monkeys/Curtis Mayfield track is actually about “celebrating the day” after Margaret Thatcher is deposed at the forthcoming general election, and we all know what happened there!

I can see why there were the calls to have Chris Montez’s ‘The More I See You’ reissued as around this time it was massive at many nights/weekenders and always got a big response from the crowd like everyone had known it for years..
Yes as I remember it around London at least you’d never have heard ‘I wanna Dance With Somebody’ outside mainstream clubs or pop radio so it must have got its responses to get it doing well in the club chart from other parts of the country. However it did surface in underground London a couple of years later in Shut Up And Dance’s ‘5678’ sampled heavily all the way through it t.
Looked back through my memory like Swiss Cheese I think it was round about now that I went to my first club where everyone seemed to be off their heads on drugs. Although the underground. dance world in London and the south east was mostly a boozy scene there’d always been a bit of speed around if you wanted it. However round about now I went on what I think was the last of the pubs big coach trips to a club on a big boat called The Riverside (I think!) which was awash (forgive the pun) with various types of illicit stimulants and like post 1988 had people in the toilet with bags of pills (obviously not ecstasy but speed pills) selling them all night with new supplies when they ran out.. This was also the first time I remember going off at the end with complete strangers and a few hours later as the come down kicked in thinking in my paranoid state what the hell am I doing here, who are these people and how do I extricate myself from this – and most importantly how the hell do I get home?
Who knows maybe drugs were starting to become a bigger thing on the underground dance scene even before ecstasy hit.

“I Wanna Dance With Somebody” also re-surfaced in The KLF’s “Whitney Joins The JAMMS”, which was a big tune at my club nights in early 1988.
