LILLO THOMAS ‘Downtown (Remix)’ (Capitol 12CL 453)
Remixed exotically wriggly 101⅔-0bpm jitterer once a bit like ‘All Night Long (All Night)’ but now possibly over-full of digital chipmunks and chirrups, although the rhythm remains good (seven inch version flip, and 114-0bpm ‘I’m In Love (Remix)’).

JAMES KING ‘Memory’ (Expansion Records EXPAND 8)
Fabulous uplifting infectious fluidly bounding 121½-121¼bpm real soul flier by the sometime leader of Philadelphia vocal group the Futures, full of timeless quality, flipped by the easily rolling 109½bpm ‘Easy Love’ and smoochy 72¼bpm ‘The Sorrow, The Pain’, just as soulful. You’ll play it again and again!

RICK ASTLEY ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ (RCA PT41448)
And now Stock Aitken Waterman recreate the Seventies Philly soul sound, sort of, for this catchily striding facile 113½bpm canterer with hustling hi-hats and rich baritone singing by the Rick of Rick And Lisa (inst/edit flip), tipped by many as a smash.

SHERRICK ‘Just Call’ (Warner Bros W8380T)
Although this impressive husky soulster’s classily wriggling swayer does grow on one in its pausing and slowly fading 112bpm Hot Line Mix 12 inch A-side and the flip’s trickily introed but then more subtly satisfying (0-)112bpm Collect Call Mix (together with the routinely snapping 121½-0bpm ‘I’m Scared ‘A You’), so many people still favour the even more subtly soulful original – here 112⅓bpm – seven inch version that WEA have serviced DJs with. However, if the likes of Regina Belle can’t cross over, what hope has this?

ROXANNE SHANTÉ ‘Have A Nice Day’ (Breakout USAT 612)
Marley Marl-created excellent here 102⅓-102⅔bpm rare groove scratch-up of the JBs’ ‘Pass The Peas’ and Above Average Black Band’s ‘Pick Up The Pieces One By One’ (useful dub flip too), with bursts of typically vulnerable yet tough rap by young Miss Shanté (born Lolita Gooden, she was Dimples D until she cut ‘Roxanne’s Revenge’ and changed names during 1984’s ‘Roxanne Roxanne’ craze).

UTFO ‘Ya Cold Wanna Be With Me’ (US Select FMS-62293)
Full Force-produced brilliant attractively mature tapping and swaying jiggly 83½bpm lead-switching rap jogger set – as Andy Phippen of Rayners Lane’s Record And Disco Centre so cleverly spotted – to a remake of Grace Jones’s ‘Don’t Cry – It’s Only The Rhythm’, with distinctively biting bass twiddles (Rare Dub/Radio Edit too, plus the tougher beat-cutting 93bpm ‘Diss’).

DAVY D ‘Davy’s Ride’ LP (Def Jam 450481 1)
Kurtis Blow’s onetime scratch DJ, Davy DMX actually sings soulfully between scratches on the great piano rolled jogging 96¼bpm ‘Feel For You’ and attractive mellow swaying 99bpm ‘Ohh Girl’, but gets other vocal and rap support on the girls-pleaded strong juddery scratching (0-)104⅓bpm title track, JB-cutting fascinating quavery 97⅔bpm scratch ‘n rap ‘Keep Your Distance’, Chuck Brown-based (although uncredited) 97¾bpm ‘Bustin’ Loose/Your Love Is Like Money In The Bank’, trickily garbled then ticking 94¾bpm ‘Live On Hollis Day’, Timex Social Club-type 99bpm ‘Do Ya Do’, Russell Simmons-led in-joking 100bpm ‘Bring It’, bongo tapping short 99½bpm ‘Let’s Rock’, angrily rapped 90bpm ‘Get Busy’, girls chanted jerky 102½bpm ‘Have You Seen Davy’.

Veteran London hip hop DJ Tim Westwood (seen here chillin’ out!) has actually gone and produced the first true Cockney-Jamaican reggae-rap fusion, LONDON POSSE ‘London Posse’ (Big Life BLR 2T, via The Cartel), set to a burbling 92½bpm bass beat pulse with scratching accents and catchy chants (dub/edit too), flipped by the wordy 91-0bpm ‘My Beatbox Reggae Style’ excitingly showcasing the posse’s human beatbox Sipho. Is the future between dread and def, dref? That’s it!

DJ MEGA-MIX VOL 1 ‘The Finest Ingredients (Part 1)’ (DJ Mega-Mix MM001)
Maybe purposefully fishy looking bootleg import-style Double Dee & Steinski-type jittery 0-96½-0bpm instrumental scratcher cutting dialogue lines and bits from such as ‘The Champ’, ‘Last Night A DJ Saved My Life’, Rufus Thomas’s ‘Tutti Frutti’ and many more, Part 2 being a suspiciously English-accented 94½-0bpm MCs rap about punk rock b-boys (Radio Mix and Club Mix sides are the same). Another scam?

THE WHISPERS ‘Special F/X (Remix)’ (Solar MCAT 1178)
Cleverly worded slinkily swaying 107½bpm jogger with its climaxing “whoa-oh” crowd chants now re-edited to punctuate it from the start, flipped by the superbly sung piano-rolled smoochy 63½bpm ‘Give It To Me’, their album’s best tracks back to back!

THE O’JAYS ‘My Favourite Person’ (Epic OJAY T1)
This cornily harmonised Four Freshmen-ish pleasant brassy sophisticated nightclub-type 95⅓-95¾-94⅔bpm jiggly big band swayer is now touted as a rare groove, and flipped by the slickly jogging 107bpm ‘Summer Fling’ and the much more famous, accelerating 109½-117bpm ‘Use Ta Be My Girl’.

KOOL AND THE GANG ‘Holiday (12 inch Club Remix)’ (US Mercury 888712-1)
Doubtless realising they’ve lost their roots audience by dabbling so much with rock ‘n pop, the Gang deliberately remixed this sax squawked simple chugging beefy 115-114⅔bpm funk smacker in their traditional style, with ‘A Love Bizarre’ tinge too it’s a welcome change (Jam Mix and less good 7 inch version too).

GROVER WASHINGTON JR ‘Summer Nights’ (US Columbia 44 06863)
Marcus Miller-prod/penned smoothly jittering (0-)115-0bpm lush catchy sax swayer, all very slick and classy, flipped by the more meandering equally pleasant (0-)111½bpm ‘Strawberry Moon’.

CC & CO ‘When’ (US Gibraltar Entertainment Records 17117)
“When ya gonna wake up, when ya gonna see the light?” repeatedly asks one CC Ryder, creator of this excellent, lurchingly swaying 105¾bpm timeless soul jiggler, with doodling sax and girl group support (inst flip).

JANICE BULLUCK ‘Don’t Start A Fire’ LP (US Wilbe Recording Corporation WIL 3003)
Co-produced by label owner William Bell, this fluidly expressive wailing lady’s strong set is about as traditional a soul album as you’ll find these days, with the recently seven-inched “do ya!”-repeating lovely sultrily swaying 111bpm ‘Do You Really Love Me’, sinuously tripping 111bpm title track, sweetly chugging 113¼bpm ‘Excited (About Your Love)’, lightly bluesy 77bpm ‘Right Love – Wrong Man’, urgent 124¼bpm ‘I’m Ridin’ High On Your Love’ (called ‘I’m Riding High On Love’ as her B-side), tensely chanting 111⅔bpm ‘We’ve Got It Right’, lurching 115¼bpm ‘If It Turns You On’ and frantic sellout 130¼bpm ‘Turn On Your Radio’.

DEM NIGGAS’ ‘Git The Hole’ (US Thomix Records TMX 001)
Rivalling 2 Puerto Ricans A Blackman And A Dominican as an outrageous group name, this very odd jaggedly jolting 115½bpm stuttery monotonous groove and its instrumental 116½bpm ‘Holebeats’ are in fact overshadowed by the flip’s jacking Latin-pianoed 114½-115½bpm ‘Don’t Hold Back’ and throbbing 111½-120bpm ‘Native Beast’, all equally weird and likely to have cult appeal.

RYTHIM IS RYTHIM ‘Nude Photo (Rythim Mix)’ (US Transmat MS 002)
Played on what sounds like drains, this simple bounding 123-122½bpm synthetic instrumental percolator, with female giggles, has been out a while and overtaken by the flip’s similar but more speedily skittering 125½-125¼bpm ‘The Dance (Living Room Mix)’ jack track (jerky 122bpm ‘Move It (Only Mix)’ too), all rather strange and not immediately to my taste.

NAT AUGUSTIN ‘That Girl’ (Breakout USAT 609)
Breakout’s first UK signing, the ex-Light Of The World guy was produced in Philadelphia by Dexter Wansel on this emphatically thudding 0-107-0bpm soulfully rolling lurcher, to sneakily nagging effect, flipped by the joltingly jogging 101bpm ‘You’ve Got That Something’ and shuffling 117-0bpm ‘I’ll Rescue You (Club Dub Mix)’.

LEVERT ‘Casanova’ (US Atlantic A9217T)
Reggie Calloway-created soulfully impassioned nagging subtly jaunty go go-ish 93½bpm jiggler, full of implied bouncy rhythm (in four mixes), by Eddie Levert of The O’Jays’ sprog.

JILL JONES ‘Jill Jones’ LP (Paisley Park 925 575-1)
Prince produced some of the tracks by this obviously purple-styled white girl, but not her two standout self-penned slowies, the Teena Marie-ish rolling jiggly jogging (0-)93⅔bpm ‘Violet Blue’ and bluesily weaving 61-0bpm ‘Baby You’re A Trip’, well worth checking if you can ignore the rest.

LISA LISA AND CULT JAM ‘Head To Toe’ (CBS 650520 4)
Better late than never, I’ve finally been serviced with this recent US chart-topping Full Force-produced perky shuffling 113½-0bpm lurcher, sorta Five Star meet the Dixie Cups, flipped by the plaintively jolting 116-0bpm ‘You’ll Never Change (Full Force Remix)’ and a dubby ‘Heads, Toes And Feets (Foot Mix)’ of the A-side – this latter mix being replaced on later pressings (CBS 650520 8) by a straightforwardly edited together ‘Head To Toe/I Wonder If I Take You Home (Feet First Mix)’ by Mark Chamberlain (the older song’s segments being 112¼bpm).

HANSON & DAVIS ‘Come Together’ (US Fresh Records FRE-12)
Timmy Regisford-mixed exciting jittery fast 125¼bpm house tempo pounder by the mournfully singing New York duo, all their own work (in five versions), a likely jack track smash.

CALIFORNIA EXECUTIVES ‘I Can’t Forget You’ (US Parliament Records PRC-1000)
Steadily trotting jauntily wriggly 113½bpm backbeat bonking timeless soul vocal group swinger (inst/edit flip), good of its type, though maybe not another Lanier & Co.
