Two weeks ago I reviewed 1982’s Montana Sextet ‘Heavy Vibes‘ purely as a wind-up, as many must have guessed, although also it seemed inevitable in the current LA Mix-inspired Philly revival atmosphere that it must surely soon be due for re-release — and indeed now it is, prompted in part by that very review, but on 10 Records rather than Virgin! … Stock Aitken Waterman have remixed the all-star Disco Aid single, ‘Give Give Give’, for this year’s November 14 nationwide charity disco night, the charities chosen to benefit being Help The Aged, the Stuart Henry Multiple Sclerosis Appeal, and the organising committee’s own new Discos For The Disabled (full details about participation from the secretary, Theo Loyla, 6 Tomay Cottages, Hawthorne Corner, Herne Bay, Kent CT6 6TH) … Steve Walsh, despite being lower in the chart, appeared last week on Top Of The Pops in place of the originally scheduled Fatback because of a Musicians Union ruling that allows only the original recording line-up to appear —and, unfortunately, lead singer on the four-year-old original version of ‘I Found Lovin’’, Michael Walker, has long since left the group … Tony Blackburn, despite endorsing Odyssey’s hits LP in TV commercials, to his credit on Radio London really slagged off the dreadful M&M remix of ‘Inside Out’, included in the set he’s advertising! … Clare Shave is building a gay disco mailing list at Virgin, 553-579 Harrow Road, London W10 4RH … Simon Brown has taken over as DJ co-ordinator at Juliana’s (01-603 1313), recruiting jocks for the disco installation company’s European and Middle Eastern contracts … Stockport’s Quaffers, in Bredbury, hosts a Disco Exhibition North 87 this Sunday (October 18) noon-6pm, and Monday 11am-5pm (followed by a Shownite), £1.50 admission on the day … UREI 1620 mixers, as used by Jellybean and most of New York’s DJ legends, are available in the UK at £999 (VAT included) from Harman Audio UK Ltd, Mill Street, Slough, Berkshire S12 SDD, sole distributors of JBL loudspeakers as well (anyone interested, contact Sean Martin) … DJs Martin Rawles and Andrew Phillips have changed their name from the Southampton Funkers to the less regionally limiting 2 Damn Bad, and successfully created a live mix on BBC Radio Solent using the station’s unadaptable equipment only after treating an emergency cut-off switch as if it was a “transformer”, much to the angry engineer’s amazement! ON THE ONE ‘Who’s Really Bad?’ (US Bassment Records BM-0061)
Hard on the heels of Simon Harris’s rap treatment, here’s Craig Bevan’s house-ification of Michael Jackson’s ‘Bad’, basically instrumental in three mixes, the 116bpm Serious Groove/Electro Groove and its edited Radio Groove being electronically jittery while the bounding 118bpm Serious House Version/Bassment House Version brings out the keyboards more excitingly. Extremely useful and likely to be large!

LIVING IN A BOX ‘The Bootleg Mix’ (Chrysalis LIBB 3)
Turning out to be the A-side now of their lacklustre ‘So The Story Goes’, this terrific house-style 114½bpm jittery piano jangled instrumental chugger isn’t actually a remix of any specific track, being freshly created by Dancin’ Danny D out of his own rhythm with samples from the group. All aboard!

SPOONIE GEE ‘The Godfather’ (Sure Delight Records SDT 3, via EMI/Jet Star)
Marley Marl-mixed roadblocking 103⅔bpm tribute to James Brown by this claimant to the title of “Godfather Of Rap”, the longest lasting import hit of recent months.

COOKIE CREW ‘Females (Get On Up)’ (Rhythm King LEFT 12T)
Produced by the Beatmasters (who actually are girls too), this enthusiastic Salt-n-Pepa-ish funkily infectious jiggly (0-)107⅙ rap ‘n scratch uses bursts from Lyn Collins’ James Brown-produced ‘Think’ and Bobby Byrd’s universal “yeah” (in three mixes), due finally next week after months on promo.

STEVIE WONDER ‘Skeletons’ (Motown ZB 41439)
Delving back to his old ‘Superstition’/’l Wish’ style, this datedly lurching wordy 99⅔bpm jitterer has so far only been serviced on seven inch ahead of the typically still awaited extended 12 inch (ZT 41440).

ROSE ROYCE ‘Lonely Road’ (Carrere CART 417)
Ricci Benson-sung lovely drifting 83⅚bpm soul smoocher with Grover Washington Jr guesting on sax, flipped by the Nick Martinelli-produced Chaka Khan-ish purposefully jiggling 101⅙bpm ‘Doesn’t Have To Be This Way‘, both from last year’s import LP (which is evidently due here too). As the album didn’t do much when new, apart from maintaining a slight “underground” buzz, presumably these are rare grooves?

MILES JAYE ‘Let’s Start Love Over’ (US Island 0-96744)
The only hot cut from his import LP has been usefully extended, a strong gruffly soulful jittery rhythm-filled swaying 89bpm jogger featuring (not enough of) Roy Ayers on vibes, and some spoken ruminations.

MODERNIQUE ‘Modernique’ LP (US Sire 1-25633)
Looking like soulful lead singer Larry Woo and co-producing musician Gordon Worthy’s own version of Chic, being photographed as a two guys/two girls group, the set is vocally excellent throughout no matter what the tempo, on the classily saxed swaying 104¼bpm ‘Falling In Love’, superb smoothly trotting timeless 116⅙bpm ‘Linda, My Love‘, pleasantly rolling 96bpm ‘I Believe In Love‘, ‘Casanova’-ish jolting 99⅓bpm ‘Take A Risk On Love’, juddery jogging 98⅓bpm ‘Tossin’ ‘N Turnin’‘, jerkily galloping 121¼bpm ‘So Much Love‘, plaintively cantering 116⅓bpm ‘From Friends To Lovers‘, slickly smoochy 85½bpm ‘You Can Call On Me’, jittery Hi-NRG-ish 115¼bpm ‘One Hot Ticket’, jaggedly urgent 119¼bpm ‘Call It What You Want’.

TRAEDONYA ‘The Boogaloo’ (Tuff City TUF 128018)
Toughest new rap of the moment, a surprisingly short but bounce-filled funkily drummed rare groove-ish lurching stark 90-90½-90bpm jiggler by young Miss Jones (short 90⅓bpm bonus beat and strong 90-90⅓bpm instrumental too), plus the more jittery 0-88⅞bpm ‘Sixteen‘ (and its 0-89-88⅞bpm instrumental). Only 16, and all woman!

JANICE BULLUCK ‘Do You Really Love Me’ (Wilbe Recording Corporation WCST 206 via PRT)
Already warm for a while on her album, this smoothly ticking subtle soul swayer is now in a more emphatically tapping 110⅓bpm Alternate Mix, flipped by the still classier original 111⅓bpm LP Mix and another new more doodling 111⅓/55⅔bpm Quiet Storm Mix (which loses some of the beats to become a semi-slowie).

CHRIS PAUL ‘Back In My Arms’ (Syncopate 12SY5, via EMI)
Although due in a far better house-style Yardie Remix, this datedly frantic 0-120½bpm jitterer with Britfunk vocals by Total Contrast and the flavour of Paul Hardcastle’s old D-Train remixes is already flipped far more strongly by the teasingly promoed (on white label as a separate unidentified single), much meatier jittering 117-0bpm ‘City Nights‘, with nice vibes and a “summertime city nights” female refrain that sounds familiar.

ZUZAN ‘Girls Can Jak Too’ (deConstruction Records ZANT 1, via RCA)
Simple thudding 122¾bpm jack track bounder with jangly piano behind the rapped instructions of Manchester’s Anglo/Indian Susan Dennison, in three mixes produced by T-Coy’s Tim Oliver and Mike Pickering.

FAT BOYS ‘Falling In Love’ (Urban URBX 10)
Actually a US hit before ‘Wipeout’, this 0-93bpm atmospheric muttering slow jogger is not exactly a “rap ballad” but fits that LL Cool J mood (Dubb flip, and the anti-VD warning 0-42⅚/85⅔-97-96⅓-0bpm ‘Protect Yourself/My Nuts (Medley)‘).

FIVE STAR ‘Strong As Steel’ (Tent PT 41566)
Squeaky clean inoffensive sweet 89⅔bpm slowie by the typically piercing Pearsons, already a pop hit and possibly palatable for soul fans too, flipped by Delroy’s funkily doodling 107⅓bpm instrumental ‘The Man‘ and a dubwise 106⅔bpm M&M Groove Remix of ‘Can’t Wait Another Minute’.

FRANKIE PAUL ‘Sara’ (Live and Love LLD46, via Jet Star)
Latest reggae smash to mash up the nation, a strainingly plaintive sparsely pulsed 90bpm swayer with enough haunting appeal possibly to cross over.

KING SOUNDS ‘Reggae Lover’ (Visa Records VZD-01, via Jet Star)
Attractive pleasantly swaying singalong 84⅔bpm reggae nagger with nice mellow old fashioned brass and, early on, some concert “crowd” effects.

SHANICE WILSON ‘Discovery’ LP (US A&M SP-5128)
Janet Jackson/Five Star-ish debut by an attractive 14-year-old, yet another “discovery” from US TV’s ‘Star Search’ talent show, the snappy 112⅓-0bpm ‘I Think I Love You’, bubbly 115¼bpm ‘He’s So Cute‘, jiggly 114¾bpm ‘No ½ Steppin’‘, plaintive 115½bpm ‘I’ll Bet She’s Got A Boyfriend‘, lurching 117bpm ‘Spend Some Time With Me‘ and already 12-inched smacking 111bpm ‘(Baby Tell Me) Can You Dance‘ all being bright and beaty if formularised, while the lushly meandering 26-0bpm ‘Just A Game’, 74/37bpm ‘I Know You’ and 37½/75bpm ‘The Way You Love Me’ are surprisingly mature. Full of promise.

MAXI PRIEST ‘Some Guys Have All The Luck’ (10 Records TENT 198)
Robert Palmer oldie in a pleasant enough predictable 92bpm MoR reggae reading.

FREDDIE JACKSON ‘Jam Tonight (Serious Jam Remix)’ (Capitol 12CL 461)
Attractively swinging 111¾bpm finger snapper proving possibly too sophisticated for many floors, flipped here by the tenderly crawling 85/42½bpm ‘I Don’t Want To Lose Your Love’ (and — STOP PRESS! — on some pressings also is the old Mystic Merlin ‘Mr Magician‘, on which he sang lead, all those years ago).

GEORGIO ‘Tina Cherry’ (Motown ZT 41556)
Getting mixed reaction here, a US hit monotonous chugging 116½bpm wriggler muttered through stuttery smurfs and fluttering synths in Jermaine Stewart style (and three mixes).

BARRY WHITE ‘Sho’ You Right’ (Breakout USAT 614)
Deceptively frantic (0-)132¼bpm rather thinly beating snapper which his usual old splurging vocal style makes sound slower. One for the ‘Stop To Love’ fans?

STEVE ARRINGTON ‘Stone Love’ (Manhattan 12MT 30)
Stevie Wonder-ish jerkily weaving 94bpm plodding jitterer with vaguely inspirational lyrics, disappointing on first hearing although a possible grower.

TRAMAINE ‘Freedom’ (US A&M SP-12248)
Tito, Randy, Jackie and Jermaine Jackson vocally support this lurchingly striding jittery thudder, now in four new 114½bpm remixes by Robert Clivilles and David Cole of ‘Do It Properly’ fame, but even so it remains rather dull.

PAUL JOHNSON ‘Fear Of Falling’ (CBS PJOHN T4)
Pleasant enough though unremarkable subdued huskily introspective 105⅔bpm jittery swaying wriggler.

DEE LEWIS ‘Stuck On Love’ (Mercury DEE 112)
Linda’s Stock Aitken Waterman session-singing sister soloing on a pleasant 109bpm classily styled Cherrelle-ish soul jiggler tightened up in two rhythmically sharper Jeffrey B Young mixes, the flip’s Fruity Mix in Sister Sledge style.

THE CHRISTIANS ‘When The Fingers Point’ (Island 12IS 335)
Bass burbled quite soulful Curtis Mayfield-ish 126½-0bpm throbbing trotter with some good sound effects.

BARBARA MASON ‘I’ll Never Love The Same Way Twice’ (Bluebird BRT 41)
Who’d have guessed that 22 years after ‘Yes I’m Ready’ she’d still be making gorgeous slinky soul slowies like this 0-63⅓-65-65¾-66-66⅔bpm swayer, in the same youthful distinctively plaintive vocal tone? Nice 88¼-90½bpm and 39/78-80¼bpm B-side tracks too, presumably called ‘On And Off’ and ‘Playing With My Feelings’ (hard to tell from a white label).

VISION ‘Do It Tonight’ (Domino Records DOM 8T, via Charly)
William Bell co-produced gentle guys-souled tenderly undulating very quiet 90½bpm slinker flipped by the even moodier crawling instrumental 72¾bpm ‘The Seduction’.

NOEL ‘Silent Morning’ (Fourth & Broadway 12BRW 76)
Very dated Lisa Lisa-copying boring jerky (0-)115¾bpm electro jitterer sung in white pop style by an Hispanic hearthrob (in three mixes), big in New York and Miami where — unlike here — Puerto Rican kids can identify with him.
