Sneakily unassuming good slinkily weaving 96-95¾bpm go-go-ish jiggler with sampled vocal punctuations by James Brown, the “awww” from ‘Le Freak’, AWB-ish brassy breaks, and chorusing girls (more instrumental flip), worth checking.

MAGIC LADY ‘Betcha Can’t Lose (With My Love)’ (US Motown 4605MG)
Emotions-ish soulful girls sung pleasantly old fashioned steady 0-111¾bpm strider with calm verses then catchily sing-song simple choruses (in four mixes), getting warm.

GWEN GUTHRIE ‘Can’t Love You Tonight’ (Warner Bros W7900T)
Head-turning 0-108¼-108-107⅔bpm ‘There Ain’t Nothin’ Goin’ On But Aids And Herpes’ warning message, trendily scratching in some James Brown – but his 1956 debut, ‘Please Please Please’, which at least is different! – with a jittery 108-0bpm Dub and guy-rapped harder 0-107bpm The Surgeon General’s Funky 4/4 Beat. I don’t think it’s going to be as big as some others do.

MAC THORNHILL ‘Who’s Gonna Ease The Pressure (Townhouse Cuts)’ (10 Records TENX 214)
Traffic and car ignition introed Colonel Abrams-ish huskily multi-tracked and scatted nervily wriggling (0-)121⅔bpm house hustler with “pshta pshta” hi-hats and busy backing (121⅔bpm Townhouse Edits, and exciting spikier less dense scratching (0-)122¼bpm Sizzle House Canadian (Club Mix) flip.

JULIAN JONAH ‘Jealousy & Lies’ (Cooltempo COOLX 157)
Nice languidly muttered wriggling and pattering 119½bpm subtle UK house canterer (instrumental too), flipped by the more urgent though sparse 123½bpm Alternative Dance Mix that was on rm’s ‘Cool Cuts 2’ single.

MAYDAY ‘Nude Photo ’88 (Ultimate Mix)’ (Kool Kat KOOL T14)
Rythim Is Rythim’s bounding sulphuric instrumental percolator with girlish giggles, now speeded up in a more frantic 127bpm remix by Detroit’s Transmat label owning Derrick May, using his own pseudonym as artist this time, with skittery Sinister plus washing machined Acid Burns and 126¼bpm Wiggin mixes too.

NORMAN CONNORS ‘Passion’ (Capitol EST 2056)
The Starship Orchestra-leading percussionist’s long waited album is OK for fans but patchy in comparison with Jean Carne’s, jazzy instrumentals being the Freddie Hubbard trumpeted frantically infectious 141½-142¾-142-141bpm ‘Samba For Maria’, and doodlingly lurching 97⅚bpm title track, while huskily masculine Spencer Harrison sings the tender meandering 0-88½-88⅔bpm ‘I Am Your Melody’, EWF’s 61bpm ‘That’s The Way Of The World’, slushy 0-52¼-0bpm ‘Heaven In Your Eyes’, and Minnie Riperton-ish Gabrielle Goodman Sings Minnie’s 0-55⅓ ‘Lovin’ You’, the jerkily cantering 114⅓bpm ‘Shabba’, brightly leaping 122¼-122⅓-122¼bpm ‘Private Stock’, wailing jiggly 107⅙bpm ‘You’re My One And Only Love’, both duetting the slow rolling 75¾-76bpm ‘Welcome To My Life’. In truth, I found much of it dreary.

JEAN CARNE ‘Let Me Be The One’ (RCA PT 41880)
Pleasant but not exactly grabbing 112¼bpm wriggly undulating jazz-soul when her album’s sultry ‘Heartache‘ hit would have made a more commercial bet, flipped by the old swooping and wailing classify soulful, Grover Washington-saxed, 58½bpm ‘Closer Than Close’ and crawling gritty waltz tempo 0-25⅓/76-78¾-0bpm ‘Break Up To Make Up’.

DAVE COLLINS ‘Good Lovin’ (GTI Records GTI 001T)
Ansil’s ‘Double Barrel’ partner these days is a fine soul singer, most recently with Cargo, on a very sparsely backed (0-)114¾bpm subtle Vandross-ish wriggler (edit/dub flip).

Steadily tapping 118½bpm instantly familiar old fashioned somewhat Howard Hewett-ish catchy pop-soul jiggler, flipped by the gently swirling (0-)97bpm ‘If You Want To Fool Around‘ (inst too).

EVELYN KING ‘Flirt (Pump It Up Mix)’ (US EMI-Manhattan V-56075)
Leon Sylvers II-produced sombre heavily juddering 0-99⅙bpm slinky jiggler like a more ominous version of the Phil Harding “hip hop” beat, full of gimmicky edits (in four mixes) but subduedly jaunty.

BOOGIE DOWN PRODUCTIONS ‘My Philosophy’ (US Jive 1096-1-JD)
Credited on Jive’s ‘Word 2’ compilation LP to its actual creator, KRS-One, although overseen by (and mentioning) the late DJ Scott La Rock, this nervily jittering (0-)94-0bpm wordy rap scratches a sax riff from – I think – the Crusaders’ ‘Way Back Home’ (in four mixes).

THE M.L.K. PROJECT ‘I Have A Dream’ (Fourth & Broadway 12BRW 93)
Democratic 3-created fast locomoting 119¼bpm beefy backbeat smacker overdubbed with Martin Luther King’s famous speech, to mark the 20th anniversary of his assassination (the unaccompanied speech is on the flip, plus with a different less good 0-118¾bpm original backing).

SUN PALACE ‘Winning (X-Mix)’ (Debut DEBTX 3045)
Gently jogging and building 108bpm atmospheric jazzy instrumental with sexy female groans, and “chicken skratch” guitar before piano takes over, first out around 1984 but now remixed by Nigel Wright (squeaky synth based 107⅓bpm original mixes on flip).

MARK IMPERIAL & CO featuring JACK N. HOUSE ‘The Love I Lost’ (US House Nation Records HN-88011)
Kevin Irving-sung mournfully moaning and churning slick speedy 121½bpm house bounder (in four mixes), not the Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes oldie.

Colonel Abrams-ish frantically flying maybe over-busy but soulful and adventurous 123¾bpm house, with pattering beats and the sort of lulls that go over well in New York (in five mixes), the harder instrumental Church and Synagogue Dubs possibly being better for here.

Small voiced girl nagged unemphatic 119bpm jerky house bounder (in four mixes by Blaze).

Tongue in cheek (or somewhere!) frantic 128bpm acid house, good as that and not just a gimmick, but rapped by the Muff Man-credited alternative 128bpm ‘Sit On The Face’ (so what are they on about?)!

GEE & JAY ‘X-Rated Lynn’ (US M.O.B. Records MOB-007)
Not for radio play, a jogging (0-)92⅚-93⅙bpm bragging narrative rap about an act of copulation that was definitely good old fashioned unsafe sex, refreshingly with no mention of AIDS, coupled by the ‘Beverly Hills’ banjo-scratching more routine 103⅚bpm ‘Got To Get Some‘ thudder.

THE McKENZIES ‘Mealy Mouth’ (Ron Johnson Records Z-RON 18, via Rough Trade)
Perhaps overly busy familiar groove scratching 107⅔-0bpm somewhat bass bombed chugger, skilfully mixed up by Derby DJ Graeme Park, of Groove fame (naff white boy vocal flip).

STEREO MC’s and CESARE ‘Move It’ (Fourth & Broadway 12BRW 94)
Drearily lurching 95⅓bpm white boy rap chugger, with its better funkily weaving 95⅓ ‘Move‘ instrumental, now A-side over the far better volume pumping densely jittery 0-113¼-0bpm ‘Feel So Good (Dungeon)‘ scratching in the “rollin’, rollin’, rollin’” from ‘Mule Train’ and drums from ‘Do What You Wanna Do’, although again its less credible 0-113¼bpm ‘Feel So Good’ vocal has been given precedence.

JACKSON 5 ‘I Want You Back (’88 Remix)’ (Motown ZT 41914) Their debut 1970 hit, included in its half-steppin’ jittery 97⅓-98⅓-97⅔bpm original version has been radically restructured and augmented by Phil Harding and Ian Curnow in a 103⅚-103⅔-104-103½-103-102½bpm remix and 103⅓-104-103⅔-104-103-102½bpm dub, with o certain amount of stereo panning, hard on the heels of its use in the Eric B remix! Included too is the sweetly swaying squeaky 0-81⅔-82⅔-83½bpm ‘Never Can Say Goodbye’, their sixth hit, more recently revived by Gloria Gaynor, and the Communards (although very differently from this).

PET SHOP BOYS ‘Heart’ (Parlophone 12 R 6177), jittery tuneful Eurobeat throbber, with “poo-poo” syndrums in the bland 122-0bpm Disco Mix or digital stutters kicking off Shep Pettibone’s more percussive (0-)121⅓bpm Dance Mix flip (similar really Eurodisco 0-123¾bpm ‘I Get Excited (You Get Excited Too)’ too);

THE J.A.M.S. ‘Burn The Beat (JAMs Have A Party) (House Mix)’ (KLF Communications KLF 002, via Rough Trade), a now acid synth tinged thrashing and bashing 0-120½-0bpm chanter borrowing from Sly & The Family Stone’s ‘Dance To The Music’, although not as much as the raucously Scottish accented originally promoed B-side version does;

LOUIS ARMSTRONG ‘What A Wonderful World’ (A&M AMY 435), gravel-voiced Satchmo’s sentimental 72-71-0bpm lush MoR swayer was a 1968 UK chart-topper but never sold in the States until now, when it’s the hit from smash movie ‘Good Morning, Vietnam’;

ELLA FITGERALD ‘Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye’ (HoneyBee HONEY 5 12), truly classic Cole Porter-penned “how strange the change from major to minor” 79½-0bpm strings-backed swayer from the mid-Fifties, essential MoR;

EDDY GRANT ‘Harmless Piece Of Fun’ (Parlophone 12R6180), incredibly Police-like 129½bpm jerkily lurching rock “regatta de blanc”, due commercially in just over a week;

SHAKATAK ‘Dr! Dr! (Critical Mix)’ (Polydor DRDR 1), rhythmically blurred wriggly kicking 0-121⅔bpm shuffler with a much punchier percussive acid instrumental 120bpm Sulphuric Mix flip, but the general (hospital) idea has already been done better, as ‘Dr Beat’;

P|P|G ‘Jack The Beat’ (Quazar QUAT 7, via Pinnacle), Persi/Prevish/Zafret-created (so who’s “G”?) routine cantering (0-)119⅓bpm volume pumper with samples by James Brown and others, including what sounds like a remake of that notorious ‘Roadblock’ intro!;

FIERCE ‘Put That (Record Back)’ (Hardback BOSS 6), another clichéd volume pumping 109¾-0bpm scratcher;

BARRY MANILOW with KID CREOLE AND THE COCONUTS ‘Hey Mambo (Caliente Mix)’ (Arista 609781), not even ‘Mambo Italiano’, this brassy chanting 110bpm percussive jerky shuffler is surprisingly dull considering the sassy “Copacabana” that could have come from such a combo;

BIG TROUBLE ‘When The Love Is Good’ (Epic 651492 6), Giorgio Moroder-produced jogging 100½bpm plaintively derivative girl group swayer, sorta Berlin meeting Donna Summer with a catch in the throat ‘On The Radio’;

EURYTHMICS ‘I Need A Man (Macho Mix by Manu the Man)’ (RCA DAT 15), dreadfully disappointing late period Rolling Stones-style 126bpm snarling empty strutter – a shame they seem so completely to have lost their earlier consistent touch these days;

BROS ‘Drop The Boy (Shep Pettibone Mix)’ (CBS ATOM T3), Shep’s ponderously jolting 90½-0bpm slow drag of a remix, if anything, makes the swoon-age idols’ growling judderer (never a good song) even less danceable;

LIVE CINEMA ‘Pop Density (Remix)’ (Brouhaha 12CUE R1, via PRT), drearily sung (0-)119½-0bpm dated white boy synth jiggler remixed by Paul Dakeyne with some “fresh” and “it’s time” inserts.

ZONE BROS ‘Do You Wanna Funk (Funkadelic Mix)’ (Passion PASH 12 82), strainingly yelped synth burbled churning 0-128⅓bpm Sylvester/Patrick Cowley revival by the survivors of Man 2 Man, Paul Zone and Man Parrish, meatily remixed here by Robin Sellars with its thinner 0-127¼-0bpm Original Version as flip (instrumental 115½bpm ‘Funk The House’ too);

SINITTA ‘Cross My Broken Heart (Hi-NRG Remix)’ (Fanfare 12 FANX 15), slightly faster and less flowery — though not exactly HIGH energy — 119bpm remix which seems to be yo-yoing about in the Hi-NRG chart with more support for the original;

  1. I well remember the hype around Nasty Rox Inc, who were being championed as the Next Big Thing in several music papers. Since one of their members (Dave Dorrell, who had contributed to ‘Pump Up The Volume’) had previously written for The Face, i-D and the NME, it’s easy to hazard a guess as to where the hype came from! ‘Escape From New York’ went on to peak at #93 in the pop charts in June, and the group never released another single.

    With the Mac Thornhill single, James scales new heights of pedantry. As the promo 12″ contained misprints on both the sleeve’s hype sticker and the B-side’s label, listing the B-side as (SIZZLE HOUSE CANADIAN [LUB MIX]) and (Sizzle House Canadian (Lub Mix) ) respectively, James retained the misprint in all subsequent references to the track, including its appearances on the Club Chart, even after the official release tidied up the spelling. Maybe he was trying to teach a lesson about proofreading…

    I never found much use for The MLK Project’s ‘I Have A Dream’ (although I recall it being mentioned as a big Shoom anthem), but the addition of MLK’s full original speech on the B-side came in handy over the summer, when I used to run it over the first extended break in the Patrick Cowley remix of Donna Summer’s ‘I Feel Love’, while cranking up the strobe and the smoke machine.

    A good friend of mine, with otherwise sound judgment in most things, has always claimed that the best single ever released in the history of pop music is… Climie Fisher’s ‘Love Changes (Everything)’. It takes all sorts, right?!
