BEATS & PIECES

DISCO MIX CLUB’s 1989 UK Mixing Championships heats will be in January on Mon/Tues/Wednesdays, at Glasgow Hollywood Studios (9), Stockton The Mall (10), Leeds Warehouse (11), Manchester Hacienda (16), Liverpool The State (17), Nottingham New York New York (18), Swansea Martha’s Vineyard (23), Bristol Papillon (24), Southampton New York New York (25), Ealing Broadway Boulevard (30), Romford Hollywood (31), and in Northern Ireland at Portrush Traks on February 1 (a separately organised event) … Regional Finals follow likewise in February, at Sheffield Cairo Jax (6), Chippenham Goldiggers (7) and Leigh Reubens (8), with the UK Final at London’s Hippodrome on Monday, February 13 … DJ competitors should contact John Saunderson on 06286-67124 for entry details, while rappers wanting to enter the regional finals’ three rap heats should send demo cassettes to him at PO Box 89, Slough SL1 8NA … I hope to be judging as usual at all the mainland dates, snow and Thursday dawn deadlines permitting on the Wednesday nights (you may have noticed the increased number of Northern venues, which reflects the far greater response this contest gets the further it is from London!) … RePublic Records’ back-to-back pre-released Turntable Orch and Kym Mazelle tracks will not be released separately until after Christmas, provisionally on December 28 … Kym Mazelle ‘I’m A Lover‘ (misprinted anyway but on closer examination 118-118½-116⅔-116¾bpm, with an 116⅓-0bpm dub) first surfaced on import back in January, and was returned largely in Manchester charts for some weeks but I regret was never reviewed then as my local record shop either couldn’t get it or wasn’t shifting it — however, Turntable Orch ‘You’re Gonna Miss Me‘ (confirmed in its 12″ Extended Ver. as 0-115¾bpm, with an 116-0bpm Dub Ver.), which surfaced on 0-115½bpm import in March, was reviewed soon after with perhaps some foresight as an “excellent hopefully not over subtle piano nagged unhurriedly jittering burbling garage groove”, but failed to hit The Club Chart at the time … Ce Ce Rogers’ piano plonked moaning smooth Marshall Jefferson-created 119⅓-0bpm deep house ‘Someday‘ goes back even further, first showing up in Manchester during July/August 1987, peaking early December again without quite hitting The Club Chart — now it’s on UK promo and much revived … Rickster ‘Night Moves‘ (originally on import in January), Raze ‘Break 4 Love‘ (from the spring), Julian Jonah ‘Jealousy & Lies’ (hottest for the trumpet washed Alkaline and Litmus remixes), the enduring Night Writers ‘Let The Music (Use You)‘, Ten City ‘Devotion‘ (and even ‘Right Back To You’), Park Ave. ‘Don’t Turn Your Love‘, Ralphi Rosario ‘You Used To Hold Me‘, Joe Smooth ‘Promised Land‘, and (bouncing off the similarly Ronald Burrell-produced Bäs Noir’s success) Tech Trax Inc ‘Feel The Luv‘ are some of the other notable “deep house” revivals that the “acid” backlash has suddenly brought to the surface … ‘Don’t Believe The Hype’, the News At Ten inspired 0-126-0bpm acid track, has appeared as by Mista E now on Urban (URBX 28), impersonator Steve Coogan of ‘Spitting Image’ replacing the original promo’s actual Alastair Burnet, Sandy Gall and Paul Gambaccini voices (a jokey The Copyright Mix is due to follow!) … Champion Records’ UK pressing of the Royal House newie is fractionally slower than the import, making ‘Yeah Buddy’ 122½-122¾-123-0bpm, ‘The Chase’ 0-106⅙-0bpm, ‘Can You Beats (Dirty Beats)’ (0-)122⅙-0bpm … Cherrelle’s ‘Affair’ album is out here now (Tabu 460734 1) … Stock Aitken Waterman’s commercial pressing of ‘S.S. Paparazzi’ contains the Hassell-Bladder and Yoyo’s Dub Mixes on the B-side but has two new The Crowning King and The Boys Have A Go Back Mixes as A-side, still 124½bpm — thanks for making me waste effort and time … Arista’s correct catalogue number is 611 916 for the Four Tops ‘Loco In Acapulco’, which also turns out to be in a pH Balance Mix and pH Dub — it would be so much easier if they labelled their promos properly to begin with — and likewise, The Boozin Bang’n Dance Crew have become just B.B.D.C. on UK issued Priority Records (PX 22) … grrr! … I tend to wait for most of the UK releases to get near The Club Chart before bothering to BPM and review them these days, as there just are too many bloody records coming out to keep up with them all — I haven’t had time to review Alexander O’Neal’s ‘My Gift To You’ LP (typically treated vigorous, and some slushy, Christmas songs!) amongst others this week, for lack of time … Paul Oakenfold “playing” guitar with Electra on ‘The Hitman And Her’ — get right on one matey … NANU NANU!

HOT VINYL

INNER CITY ‘Good Life (Magic Juan’s Mix)’ (10 Records TEN X 249)
Another ‘Big Fun’-style breezily bounding 125bpm vigorous “techno” galloper with Paris Grey chanting, cooing and wailing the catchy lyrics, flipped by Derrick May’s rattling 125¼bpm Mayday Club Mix, plus Les Adams’ old “industrial” 122⅓bpm L.A. Big Big Fun Remix of ‘Big Fun’ for some reason again.

RHYTHIM IS RHYTHIM ‘It Is What It Is (Majestic Mix)’ (US Transmat MS 6)
Derrick May produced nervily pulsing, fluttering and sizzling synth washed 124¼-124½-0bpm techno twitterer in washing machine style, already known from 10 Records’ ‘Techno!’ album, flipped (at 33⅓rpm) by the brand new frantically acidic 129¾bpm ‘Beyond The Dance (Bizarro Mix)‘ and electronic drums thrashed skittery 124⅔-123¾bpm ‘Feel Surreal (Subconscious Mix)‘, all instrumentals.

ADEVA ‘Respect (12” Extended Version)’ (US Chrysalis/Cooltempo 4V9 43329)
Paul Simpson mixed gentle synth burbled (0-)119bpm rambling girl wailed superb fluidly weaving “garage” adaptation of what you suddenly realise in surprise is Otis Redding’s classic, quite unlike The Real Roxanne’s current treatment (in five mixes), sure to be huge at deep house/garage gigs. Presumably Adeva equals “a diva”?

BLACK, ROCK and RON ‘Black, Rock and Ron’ (US Popular Records POP 23)
Familiar Seventies synth washed, “gotta have house music” scratched, raucously shouted exciting 120¼-119¾bpm jerky chugger flipped by the Public Enemy-style ‘Get On The Good Foot’-based 102bpm ‘Getting Large‘, both brash and lively (with instrumentals too) in the Todd Terry house-hip hop bridging style.

ARMANDO ‘100% Of Disin’ You (Lazy Crazy Mixx)’ (US Warehouse Records WH-001)
Armando/Mike Dunn-created exciting ‘A Day In The Life’ chord sampling frantic (0-)127-127¼-0bpm obviously Todd Terry-type leaper, the best bet on a five-tracker with a washing machine-style 122⅔bpm ‘Land Of Confusion (Remix — Dunn 4 Funn Mixx)‘ (slower and very different from the original), twittery shuffling 122bpm ‘World Unknown (My Mixx Is Dunn)‘, “deeper” philosophical message overlaid see-sawing (0-)124⅓-124⅔bpm ‘World Unknown (M.D. House Mixx)’, and sparsely tapping twittery 116⅔-117⅓bpm ‘151 (Original Version)‘.

BAD BOY ORCHESTRA ‘Hip Hop Salsa (Club Mix)’ (US Smokin’ TAI 126607)
Norberto ‘Norty’ Cotto-created very vigorous Todd Terry-type Criminal Element Orchestra ‘Put The Needle To The Record’, T La Rock & Jazzy Jay ‘It’s Yours’ and other samples woven jittery lurching (0-)117⅔bpm volume pumper with jangling Latin piano, “I see I know” chanting “salsa” girls, shouting guys and exciting edits (jittery 117⅔-0bpm Dub Mix, 117⅓bpm Radio Mix too).

THE PASADENAS ‘Enchanted Lady (Extended)’ (CBS PASA T3)
Sounding like the early Miracles singing the Tymes’ ‘So Much In Love’ as if re-arranged by the Chi-Lites with Bobby McFerrin on bass and fingersnaps, this gorgeous lush soulfully harmonised and interplayed 71/35½-0bpm surging swayer was in fact produced and co-penned by Pete Wingfield, likely to get higher than 18 with a bullet! (Joltingly jogging (0-)99½bpm ‘New Love (Original)’ and its more smoothly remixed 103⅙-0bpm instrumental, too.)

ELECTRIBE-1.0.1. ‘Talking With Myself’ (Club JABX 74)
‘Mission Impossible’-quoting atmospheric burbling sparse 113⅓bpm jiggler nervously sung in glum Sade-ish style by a girl called Billy, with a quietly pulsed gently acidic 117⅓bpm Opium Mix and regular 113⅓bpm Instrumental, to my ears pop orientated but getting garage/deep house-type attention.

THE D.J. FAST EDDIE ‘Jack To The Sound’ (US DJ International Records DJ# 1015)
Consistently strong fairly acidic and frantic house compilation (many tracks having been on 12 inch already) with the Todd Terry-type ‘Think (About It)’/’Cross The Track’ and other samples woven jumpily rapping breakneck 126bpm ‘Yoyo Get Funky’ standing out from the 123½-0bpm ‘Acid Thunder‘, 123⅔-0bpm ‘Hip House‘, 122⅔-0bpm ‘I Can Dance‘, 123⅔-0bpm ‘Let’s Go‘, 125¼bpm ‘Keep On Dancing‘, 123¾-0bpm ‘Can U Still Dance‘, 123⅓bpm ‘Jack 2 The Sound‘, 123bpm ‘Clap Your Hands‘, 125⅓bpm ‘Funk Makes You Move‘, there being more variety than the similar looking tempos might suggest. UK release on December 5 (DJART 902, via Westside Records) will be shrink-wrapped with a megamix by Double Trouble of all the tracks.

CHERRELLE ‘Everything I Miss At Home’ (Tabu 653066 6)
Alexander O’Neal duetted romantically drifting 45½-91-0bpm lush swayer in its album mix, coupled with the incredible wailing gospel soul drenched 54⅘-0bpm ‘Where Do I Run To‘ (not on the current album), and 1984’s snappily bumping 120bpm ‘I Didn’t Mean To Turn You On’.

ONLY IN THE DARK ‘Make Noise (Club Version)’ (US Profile PRO-7217)
Carlos Berrios-created Masters At Work ‘Alright Alright’, Kraze ‘The Party’, Brothers Johnson ‘Ain’t We Funkin’ Now’, James Brown ‘Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose’ drumbeat, and other samples woven — surprise, surprise! —Todd Terry-type but more tense jittery 117¼-116¾bpm hip hop house chugger (with 117bpm Radio Version, drily juddering instrumental Noisy Dub Version and Noise-Apella, 117⅔bpm Berrios Beats).

SWEET TEE ‘It’s Tee Time’ (US Profile PRO-1269)
A Hurby Luv Bug-produced rap album that will be poor value for those who already have all her singles, with only two really fresh newies — the funky JB-based very drily thumping jiggly strong 105⅙bpm ‘Show And Prove’, and similar more jittery upbeat 0-113-0bpm ‘Let’s Dance‘ — together with the pleasant romantically talked attractively drifting 35⅞/71¾bpm ‘Why Did It Have To Be Me‘ and ‘Push lt’-style frantic 0-139¼-0bpm ‘Work Out‘, fleshed out by the old ‘It’s My Thing’-ish 0-88¾bpm ‘It’s My Beat’, ‘Cold Sweat’-based 111⅙bpm ‘I Got Da Feelin’’, ‘Clean Up Woman’-based 100½-0bpm ‘It’s Like That Y’All’, current 104½bpm ‘As The Beat Goes On’ and 92⅓bpm ‘On The Smooth Tip’ (which do remain good).

TOO TUFF ‘90% Funk, 10% Rhymes Or What Can You Do (When You Know We’re Better Than You)’ (Rapsonic/Unyque Artists UNQ 4T)
Gwen McCrae ‘90% Of Me Is You’ sample-based haunting attractive though rawly chatted 0-80¾bpm swaying rap ballad, coupled by the ‘In The Midnight Hour’-introed similar conversationally muttered gently jiggling 0-84⅔-0bpm ‘Why Am I Waiting?‘ (backed by Delores ‘Deluxe’ Springer), and thin sounding jerky 111½-0bpm rap ‘n’ scratch ‘Is This Hard Enuf?’ with some Latin piano, all produced by Master ‘The Beatcreator’ Tee.

THE GARDEN OF EDEN ‘Serpent In The Garden’ (Pepper Records PEP 2)
Chanting monks introed (and kids’ playground outroed) sizzling and twittering smooth (0-)125⅔-0bpm acid instrumental (in three versions), apparently connected with London pirate DJ Steve ‘Jacko’ Jackson — but as everything about this white label is cryptic, not even the title might be right.

DONELL RUSH ‘Knockin’ At My Door’ (US Trax Records TX167)
Colonel Abrams-ishly moaned and soulfully supported good bassily cantering 121bpm frisky house leaper, with depth and absolutely no acidity (in four mixes), worth checking.

JELLYBEAN ‘Was Dog A Doughnut (Frontline Mix)’ (Chrysalis CHS 12 3326)
Remixed by Tony Smith & Jellybean, the Cat Stevens-penned ‘Tequila’-ish jauntily jolting and jiggling almost hip hop 0-97⅚-98-0bpm percolating instrumental, originally from 1984’s ‘Wotupski!?!’ EP, is now coupled with the Steve Thompson & Michael Barbiero remixed Elisa Fiorillo sung plaintively squeaky (but not unsoulful) stuttery jittering 117bpm ‘Little Too Good To Me (Long Hot Summer Mix)‘.

SKINNY BOYS ‘Set The Pace (Say Yeah)’ (Jive JIVE T 191)
Little Stevie Wonder “say yeah” sampling jittery angry shouting 108⅓bpm rap, flipped by the ‘Think (About It)’ punctuated rolling jiggly emphatic 105½bpm ‘Stylin’‘ (instrumental too), these tunes (with additional versions) being reversed on import (US Jive 1162-1-JD), the UK pressing however gaining also the largely Wee Papa Girl Rappers led lurching 105⅓bpm ‘Free Your Mind‘ — incongruously, the girls refer to this pairing as “the two best groups’ we’ve joined RCA”, which is Jive’s parent company in the USA.

Ms. MELODIE ‘Hype According To Ms. Melodie’ (US Jive 1156-1-JD)
KRS-One co-produced and scratched rap EP with the Gaz ‘Sing Sing’-based funky bass jogged 104⅓-0bpm rolling and scolding ‘To Sing All Night’ standing out from the disjointedly doodling 0-101bpm title track and, more for listening, bassy slow haunting (0-)83¼bpm ‘What Do You Do?‘ (instrumentals too).

TONE-LŌC ‘Wild Thing’ (US Delicious Vinyl DV 1002)
Drily rapped ‘Beat lt’-tempoed (0-)125⅔bpm jerky Troggs adaptation, selling though more for the flip’s hoarsely sinuous jiggling ‘Rock Creek Park’-based (0-)97⅓-0bpm ‘Loc’ed After Dark‘ (both in two versions).

E.S.P. ‘Wild Thing’ (US Select FMS62324)
Howie Tee-produced tensely chatting routine coarse 98⅓bpm rap jitterer, using a “wild thing” quote from something other than the Troggs song (instrumental too), overshadowed by the rollingly rapped but fiercely scratched 0-99bpm ‘Get Up And Get Widit‘, and especially by the flip’s Johnny Hammond ‘Shifting Gears’-based jittery frenetic 113⅔bpm ‘We Got It‘ (inst too).

THE 45 KING ‘Master Of The Game’ (US Tuff City TUF 5553)
A fast selling but to my mind very disappointing album by DJ Mark James, useful only as a series of break beats, with a new MC La Kim rapped 109⅔bpm vocal version of ‘The 900 Number’ — which is not his ‘The Posse Is Large’ version, the vocal from that now being stripped of its catchy oboe (or whatever) to make the dull 106⅙bpm ‘La Kim Theme‘ — plus there are the previously released lacklustre Markey Fresh (Jones) rapped 100½bpm ‘The King Is Here!‘ and La Kim rapped 93¼bpm ‘We Got The Funk‘, the latter’s new boring 94bpm ‘Raw Dope Rhyme’, followed by no fewer than 10 often quite short break beats, the 102⅔bpm ‘Club Trax 1’ closing side one while side two’s tracks are confusingly labelled, with ‘A Show Beat’ presumably divided into four separate 87bpm, 97½bpm, 95bpm and 94⅓bpm beats, before the 103bpm ‘Movin’’ is followed by ‘Beat Suite II’ broken down into the 116¾bpm ‘Fab Five’, 115½bpm ‘Turn The Party Out’, 98⅓bpm ‘Rock It Slow’, and 110bpm ‘Another Club Trax‘.

E’LEESA WELDON ‘I Do Believe’ (Bassment Records BASMX 2, via Westside Records)
Yazz-ish huskily worried cantering wriggly bounder in four here 122⅓bpm mixes, recently reviewed on import in full.

GLEN GOLDSMITH ‘Undercover’ (ReProduction PT 42316)
Jolley Harris Jolley created typical go-go hip hop jittered 102½bpm jolter in the current Keith Sweat-type US style, less “commercial” than usual (Dub too, and swaying 97⅚bpm ‘Save A Little Bit (Remix)’).

SURFACE ‘I Missed (12″ Version)’ (CBS 653009 8)
Chunkily rolling almost reggae flavoured, more than go-go hip hop, (0-)100bpm jiggly jogger (dub/acappella too), inevitably big in the States right now… and actually getting support here!

ChéyAnne ‘I’ve Waited Too Long (For Your Love)’ (Syncopate 12SY 21)
Chunky synth introed good girl wailed sinuously shuffling jiggly 109⅔bpm soul jogger (presumably still in its six import mixes), the sort of thing that would have been big here before house took over.

TEDDY PENDERGRASS ‘2 A.M.’ (Elektra EKR 83T)
The best track from his ‘Joy’ album, this groin grinding huskily romantic smoocher is finally out here in its 31-62bpm 4 AM, 0-62/31bpm 6 AM and All Night Mixes.

JEFFREY OSBORNE ‘She’s On The Left (12” Version)’ (Breakout USAT 643)
Tensely tapping, thudding and wriggling 111bpm jittery anguished swayer, recently huge in the US but sadly not the sort of thing that means as much here as it used to, flipped by its more immediately powerful and vocally tighter 110⅔bpm LP version, plus inevitably the old 0-112bpm Larry Levan remix of the even more intense one time classic juddery wriggling ‘Plane Love’.

MR. LEE ‘Rock This Place (UK Club Remix)’ (Kool Kat KOOL DJ 1, via PRT)
Slowed down to a perhaps now trendier pshta pshta tempo in Scooby Swift & Paul Dixon’s new 120⅔-120⅓bpm backspinning turntable mix, this nervily bashing, shouting and twittering leaper is still in its original 125¼bpm House and more frantically rattling 126bpm Club Mixes on the flip, short lived on import as not another ‘Pump Up London’.

CHAPMAN (featuring Frankie Munch) ‘Don’t Let My Funk Die’ (Orange Records LURV 1T, via Rough Trade)
Meandering lazily chatted and chanted murkily burbling (0-)105½-105⅔-0bpm funky go-go chugger (instrumental (0-)105-104⅚-0bpm In Your Face Mix), getting mailing list attention only.

HOUSE MASTER BALDWIN featuring PARIS GREY ‘Don’t Lead Me’ (Kool Kat KOOL DJ 3, via PRT)
Terry Baldwin, Mike ‘Hitman’ Wilson and DJ Pierre co-produced acidic remixes of the girl moaned house oldie, here slightly slower in the 123⅔bpm Mike’s Remix, more twittery 123¾bpm ‘Don’t Acid Me‘, and percussively bounding 123⅓-123½bpm Medusa House Mix versions (to use the correct titles, mislabelled here).

STACY LATTISAW ‘Call Me (Remix)’ (Motown ZT 42264)
Gradually intensifying then brightly enthusiastic wriggly 111¾bpm chugging smacker (edit/dub flip).

POP DANCE

GEORGE MICHAEL ‘Kissing A Fool’ (Epic EMU T7), gorgeous cocktail bar piano, bass and drums backed gently rolling 77¾-0bpm breathy sophisticated after hours ballad, like Hoagy Carmichael singing ‘Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue’ (useful brassier instrumental too);

BLONDIE ‘Denis (The ’88 Remix)’ (Chrysalis CHS 12 3328), thrashing and thumping 138¼-138-136⅔bpm Dancin’ Danny D revamp, now without the Buddy Holly influence, of Debbie Harry’s galloping 1978 adaptation of Randy & The Rainbows’ 1963 US hit, ‘Denise’, flipped by Teddy Riley’s chunkily chugging 110¾-0bpm remix of 1981’s ‘Rapture’ (Dub Version too), both from an upcoming double album of Blondie remixes by such as Shep Pettibone, Ben Liebrand, Coldcut, Bruce Forest, Jellybean and Giorgio Moroder;

JOVANOTTI ‘Gimme Five’ (WEA YZ323T), Adriano Celentano meets ‘Holiday Rap’, strictly pop, a European smash jauntily jiggling 0-110-0bpm rap by “Italy’s leading DJ” just right for organised mass wallying at Mecca party nights;

MICHAEL JACKSON ‘Smooth Criminal (Extended Dance mix)’ (Epic 653026 8), heartbeat introed tensely whispered and whinneyed urgent but empty wriggling jerky (0-)119⅔-0bpm snapper in his old ‘Don’t Stop ‘Till You Get Enough’ style;

HEAVEN 17 ‘Train Of Love In Motion (The Mainline Mix)’ (Virgin VST 1134), smacking jittery lurching (0-)119½-0bpm Kraftwerk inspired chugger with mournful ragged vocals obscuring the overly mixed down sparse drive, not another ‘Trans Europe Express’;

BROS ‘Cat Among The Pigeons‘ (Epic ATOM T6), gloomy 45/22½bpm “atmospheric” crawler coupled with a similarly sombre 0-12/24-0bpm reading of ‘Silent Night‘ (as one of my all time favourite records is ‘Elvis’ Christmas Album’, I understand and make no further comment);

SHOOT TO THRILL ‘Cinco De Mayo (In And Out Of War Mix)’ (Doctor Beat Records DRXZ 712), disco girls chanted emptily speeding 0-133¾bpm War remake;

THE LOVE MACHINE ‘Love Machine’ (The Dance Yard Recording Corporation YARD T5), rather surprisingly Rose Windross leads this dreadful jerkily bounding 0-122¼-122-0bpm corny almost Hi-NRG pop house effort, about a year out of date.

HI-NRG

LONDON BOYS ‘Requiem (Hamburg Mix)’ (WEA YZ345T), import hit archetypal lurchingly bounding (0-)117¾bpm Eurobeat thumper with gruffly muttered then soaringly chanted vocals, church organ accents, yowling guitar and a simple catchy lilt (more mechanically cantering (0-)118bpm London Mix too), by the now Hamburg-based rollerskating ex-Roxy Rollers Dennis Fuller and Edem Ephraim, apparently still hung up on the memory of Saturday night fever in the London discos of their youth;

PETULA CLARK ‘Downtown ’88 (Extended Version)’ (PRT Records PYT 19), enduringly popular 1964 hit revamped with a brand new cantering modern 116-114¾bpm backing by Peter Slaghuis (why the tempo has to dip at the end I don’t know), originally created for the Disco Mix Club, flipped by the original gently building and surging 0-117⅔-118⅓-121-124½bpm Tony Hatch production;

VIVIEN VEE ‘Give Me A Break (’88 Remix)’ (Italian X Energy X-12035), Ben Liebrand remixed rattling 125⅓-125⅔-125⅓-0bpm bounder with tinkling vibes, shrill phonetic chanting and jauntily driving Latin percussion;

OFFSHORE ‘All Work & No Play’ (Reflection FLE 5), “chick-a-goo-ga” introed exuberant gospel-ish girl wailed 0/129¾-129⅓bpm Ian Levine & Steven Wagner created piano chimed jiggly churner, not bad;

NORMA MANNING ‘All Over Again’ (Passion PASH 12 86), Rod Warren & Chris Lucas created lustily bellowed 126¼-0bpm twinkling and tinkling bright canterer, with a dubious “tripping on ecstasy” line;

BLUE MERCEDES ‘Treehouse (Street Latin Wolff 4)'(MCA Records BONAT 4), Phil Harding & Ian Curnow produced frantically throbbing 0-135¼-0bpm bubbly pumping racer full of whiplash effects, yells and energy but not much of song, with a camera motordrive driven more instrumental Acid Bath Murder mix alternative A-side;

EASTBOUND EXPRESSWAY ‘Whiplash’ (Nightmare MARE 61), Three Degrees lookalikes wailing a whipcracking frisky 125⅓-0bpm galloper with simple Levine & Wagner chords;

SILK & STEELE ‘Don’t Talk To Strangers’ (Strike Records 12STRK 6, via EMI), the ‘Doctor’s Orders’ girls try again with a huskily wailed well sung Euro-flavoured (0-)119⅓bpm jiggly chugger;

SHARON DEE CLARKE ‘I Can’t Stay Mad At You’ (Nightmare MARE 71), northern soul-style jiggly driving 129½-0bpm tuneful galloper with an ugly yowling guitar break;

SUSAN LINCKE ‘You’re My Satisfaction (Dance Mix)’ (Italian X Energy X-12034), routine clichéd 123⅓bpm Hi-NRG throbber sounding like Bananarama singing an Ian Levine production (which it isn’t!);

SPAGNA ‘I Wanna Be Your Wife (Extended Version)’ (CBS SPAG T2), plaintively gurgled and whined 118-0bpm loping rocky plodder, Euro but not really Hi-NRG;

SURPRISE ‘7-6-5-4-3-2-1 (Blow Your Whistle)’ (Italian X Energy X-12036), oddly unexciting 0-119bpm remake of the Rimshots’ 1975 oldie, flipped by a routine fast jittery — but not twittery — 127⅓bpm ‘Don’t Stop The Music (Acid House Mix)‘.

REMIXES

BOMB THE BASS featuring MAUREEN ‘Say A Little Prayer (Remix)‘ (Rhythm King DOOD R 123), infinitely preferable much tougher and more soulful slower stark bassily thudding 89½-0bpm treatment of the Dionne Warwick classic, with an understated reggae sensibility now, flipped by a new juddery chugging (0-)112⅔-0bpm ‘Megamix’ of Tim’s past hits, plus a different (0-)128-0bpm “live” (?) mix of the twittering ‘10 Seconds To Terminate‘;

BLOW (featuring BELVA) ‘Change (Makes You Want To Hustle) (Not Just Rearrange Mix)‘ (10 Records TEN R 245), “can you feel” it overlaid cleanly bounding 120bpm complete re-recording (apart from the female vocal) by Les Adams and Mike Stevens, owing little now to Donald Byrd;

THE SELF-DESTRUCTERS ‘Mission Impossible ’88 Stone 1 Remix’ (Nowyertalkin’ Records 12 TALK X3, via PRT), improved more chunkily percussive (0-)117⅔-0bpm remix of the brassily dramatic old TV theme;

PIA ‘Dance Out Of My Head (The Zeo Acid Mix)’ (Epic XPR 1400), dreadful twittering and chiming 0-124-0bpm “acid” mix which isn’t good enough for release so only pressed on limited (like 250 copies!) promo.

2 thoughts on “November 26, 1988: Inner City, Rhythim Is Rhythim, Adeva, Black Rock & Ron, Armando”

  1. It feels like 1989 has arrived early this week, with reviews for ‘Good Life’, Adeva, Electribe 101, Fast Eddie and Tone Loc, plus it’s fascinating to see how many older deep house/garage tracks are now being revived, as the tastemaker pendulum starts to swing away from acid. It seemed to be a welcome shift for James, and it was certainly a welcome shift for me too.

    We’ve come across the term “hip house” twice before – one was a false alarm, and the other was back in May, with the Hip House (Hip Hop) Mix of The Break Boys ‘And The Break Goes On’ (a mostly instrumental track, with a few fragments of rap). This week, however, Fast Eddie makes the term his own, and the genre gets started for real. It’s not just in the title of one of his album tracks; there’s also a lyrical name check in one of the album’s most successful tracks, ‘Yoyo Get Funky’:

    “Hip House is the new style that I created
    All around the world, it devastated
    By the Hip which is short for Hip-Hop
    And by the House which will rise you to the top”

    And finally: Paul Oakenfold mimed guitar on The Hitman And Her? This I’d love to see!

    1. I am at actually queueing to get in a rave now – my first for about 20 years and my last – I’ve always said for most of those years I’d go back just once more and this 90s event at Magna with about 60 DJs mostly old school seemed as good time as ever. The queue is a weird mix of 40s and 50s and really young 18-25s who wouldn’t have been born when most of the music being played was big. That’s probably why they’ve got a noughties room to attract the youth too. Trance room mostly
      I’m for me, except for Anne Savage in the hard house (she unlike most of the post TDV hard house DJs can actually DJ) and possibly illogik also in the hard house room and Fabio and grooverider and rat pack in the hardcore rave room.
      I’ve actually got a disintegrating 80s T-shirt under my early 90s long sleeve white one which might cone out when it gets hot and I think did it they can have some 1988/89.even if it is 90s.
