DON’T FORGET we’ve moved, all charts should go to Alan Jones/James Hamilton at rm, Punch Publications Ltd, Ludgate House, 245 Blackfriars Road, London SE1 9UZ (Fax number 01-928 5158) … ‘Batdance’ is not heard in any form during the movie of ‘Batman’, the incidental music and orchestral opening title theme being by Danny Elfman while Prince contributes ‘The Future’, ‘Vicki Waiting’, ‘Electric Chair’, ‘Partyman’, ‘Trust’ and the closing credits’ ‘Scandalous’ (not that it seems that many), most being played on ghettoblasters as party music or the like (the film is good fun if very violent, with Jack Nicholson’s gloriously over the top performance as the Joker a standout to relish) — the music you’re most likely to go home whistling, however, is the old ‘Beautiful Dreamer‘ as featured repeatedly by Hill Bowen & Orchestra (CBS)! … Gordon Mac points out that KISS/fm’s much criticised demo cassette was not a necessary part of the station’s submission for the London incremental FM licence, the rest of the application being totally professional: furthermore, had the station succeeded, its daytime shows would have been presented by veteran broadcasters while the more amateur but knowledgeable presenters would have been heard only in the evenings … CBS have followed the US-style ‘Stronger Together’ seven inch demo by the Chimes with now a separate 12 inch promo, ‘1-2-3 (The Silent Club Dub)‘, a soulfully pent-up girl wailed 110¼bpm chunkily lurching jiggly production by Jazzie B & Nellee Hooper no less, who also have produced the currently ffrr promoed wriggly tapping 111½bpm huskily semi-spoken unhurried ‘Blind Faith‘ by Diana Brown & Barrie K Sharpe … Atlantic have promoed Steve Hurley “DJ’s on the box” stuttering jerkily episodic exciting hip house-ish 122⅘pm ‘Work It Out‘ … ‘In Motion’ remains the title of the Precious track here, as previously reviewed, largely because that is what it was called when sent to MCA Records from its Big Beat US label … Inner City’s gatefold sleeve housed remixes, detailed last week, will not in fact be out until July 31 and August 7 … The Blow Monkeys featuring Sylvia Tella ‘Choice? (Re-remix)‘ (RCA PT 42958), sounding like a fault although apparently intentional, is an oddball 116⅖-116⅕bpm revamp overlaid by a wowing and wobbling rhythm as if the tape is slipping, coupled though by also new 116⅖bpm Magic Juan, so-called Electro, and 116⅕bpm Short Mixes, all driven to differing degrees by the ‘Think (About It)’ drumbeat … Longsy D’s latest creation, ‘Rude Boyz Gettin Funky’ is actually by L.D.Jam Inc! … ‘I Feel The Earth Move’ turns out to have been withdrawn to make way for ‘Blame It On The Boogie (PWL Remix)‘ by Big Fun, a sibilant hissing cymbal swamped effete 117⅖-117⅕-117⅖-117⅕bpm remake of Mick Jackson’s 1978 Jacksons oldie (recent inspiration of course for Norman Cook’s ‘Blame It On The Bassline’) … AVM Records here have a partnership with the Sound Of Belgium label and will be releasing Fax Yourself ‘Sunshine ’89’ on July 31 … Milton Keynes’ Jolly Roger is the latest DJ to record Timmy Thomas’s ‘Why Can’t We Live Together’, for August 14 release … Newport Pagnell’s Les Adams celebrated his homecoming from hospital by buying a CD Jukebox … South-West Devon was my sun scorched destination last week — BUT NOT FOR LONG!

THE BEATMASTERS featuring MC Betty Boo ‘Hey DJ/I Can’t Dance To That Music You’re Playing’ (Rhythm King LEFT 34T)
Switching between the Claudia Fontaine sung chorus of Martha Reeves & The Vandellas’ 1968 US hit ‘I Can’t Dance To That Music You’re Playing‘ and the modern Monie Love-ish rap of MC Betty Boo (also apparently known as Alison), this aggressive 120⅗-0bpm hip house jitterer is yet another in a rapidly overcrowding field, while the AA-side’s authentically shanking and jumping, Luke Tunney trumpet brayed and Jum Jum chanted, Sixties style (apart from a few acidic squiggles) 0-123⅘bpm ‘Ska Train‘ is more ska than sk’ouse and sounds like a fresher hit to me.

LIL LOUIS ‘French Kiss’ (ffrr FX 115)
Much hyped and massive, this mesmerically repetitive (0-)123⅖-123⅗-123⅘-0-124-0-bpm house instrumental gradually decelerates and accelerates through an orgasmic tempo-less break about two-thirds through, subsequent pressings being due to have other new mixes but the promo at least retains as flip the import’s twittery 0-121⅗bpm ‘Jupiter‘ and clanging (0-)125⅖-125⅘-126bpm ‘Wargames (Remix)‘.

BLACK BOX ‘Ride On Time (Massive Mix)’ (de/Construction PT 43056)
This Loleatta Holloway sampling gospel-ish girl roared exciting Italian house canterer is here in the same mixes as on import but with new UK names, this 119-118½(break)-119bpm original A-side, the (0-)118⅖-118⅘bpm Epsom Mix (Garage Trip) and 118½bpm Ascot Mix (Piano Version). A hit by any name!

RAVEN MAIZE ‘Forever Together’ (RePublic Records LICT 014)
The New Jersey house bounder is here in its typical latin keyboards jangled catchily chanting 123⅕bpm Forever United Mix and bassily striding percussive 124bpm Freedom Mix, plus the newly created stuttery frantic exciting 0-125⅕bpm Scat This Mix and pshta pshta hi-hat hissed nervily leaping 123½bpm Amaizin’ NY Mix.

ODYSSEY ‘Going Back To My Roots (Flim Flam Remix)’ (German Streetheat STH 545)
This excellent German remix by Tolga Balkan brilliantly samples and synchronizes Odyssey’s 1981 hit recording of Lamont Dozier’s piano nagged insistent lurcher to a new steadily chugging jiggly 110-0bpm ‘Pump Up The Volume’-type beefy bass beat, giving it a whole new lease of life.

L.A.N.D.R.O. & CO. ‘Belo e Sambar (Dance Version)’ (Italian New Music NMX 050)
Another of the hotter Italo-disco hits, an Afro flavoured Manu Dibango-ishly jittered and gruff guy spoken (0-)111½bpm chugger with some Italian sung female chorus and jazzily jangling piano, the latter heard more in the 111½bpm Massimino Dub Version.

Frankie “Bones”/Lenny “Dee” present LOONEY TUNES Volume One (US Nugroove NG-023)
More ‘Bonesbreaks’ by any other name, another EP collection of samples studded stark breaks and grooves, this one getting more genuine DJ play than most thanks to its Jimmy Page guitar yowled and vaguely Doors flavoured jiggly spurting hip house-ish (0-)121⅘-0bpm ‘Just As Long As I Got You (Club Mix)’, much livelier than the routine (0-)126-0bpm ‘They Stole Our Break (Boyee!) (Dub Mix)‘, 120-0bpm ‘Nothing Stays The Same (House Mix)‘, 0-120-0bpm ‘Another Place Another Time (Club Mix)‘, 113bpm ‘Set Jah Off (Rhythm Master Mix)‘, 120bpm ‘Nobody Webboe (Acieed Mix)‘, 106bpm ‘Jammin Breakdowns 4 (Lunchroom Mix)’, rock guitared 96⅙bpm ‘Halfway To Seven (Led Plant Mix)‘.

FRANDA ROBERTSON ‘Think’ (US Micmac Records Inc MIC 520)
Gwen Guthrie-ish girl wailed and undulating bass bumped James Bratton & Kelly Charles created good garage shuffler in 119⅘bpm Clubhouse, Club and Dub Mixes and different more vigorously driving 120⅔bpm Radio and Instrumental Versions (the song is sold more on feel and mood).

LISA STANSFIELD ‘This Is The Right Time (Miles Ahead Mix)’ (Arista RIGHT 1)
Coldcut’s creation for their recent guest vocalist is in this terrific trumpet chimed and piano jangled pounding and bounding forceful (0-)121-0bpm Dave Dorrell & CJ Mackintosh remix, coupled for contrast by a very different more soulfully flowing but less incisively burbling and scurrying 0-123bpm Extended Version mixed by Mark Saunders, both strong in their own ways and sure to attract loyal supporters.

FLAME (with Tony Terry) ‘On The Strength (Extended Vocal)’ (US Epic 49-68806)
Altogether pretty freaky and exciting, this plaintively gurgling girl and soulfully wailing Tony duetted pent-up snappily strutting urgent angular 115bpm jitterer starts like the intro to Pink Floyd’s ‘Money’ in this and the Single Version, with police sirens and “throw your hands in the air, the house is surrounded” megaphone commands as it progresses, a dubwise actual The House Is Surrounded Mix by Steve Peck being differently textured with a twittery thumping beat, Todd Terry-type synth and scratching by King Chameek. Phew!

THE KLF ‘What Time Is Love?’ (KLF Communications KLF 4R)
Recently huge in Italy and already something of a Balearic anthem, this densely throbbing instrumental is like an electronic ‘Burundi Black’ (much like the recent Renegade Soundwave ‘The Phantom’ too), with repeated stutters, mutters, and reedy synth chords, in its new 119-0-119bpm Primal Remix and 0-119-0bpm Techno Slam Mix, flipped by the original mesmeric but less dense more acidic 119-0bpm Pure Trance Mix.

BABYFACE ‘Tender Lover’ (US Solar FX 45288)
L.A. Reid’s anxiously light voiced production partner steps out solo on album, swingbeat-ish one side and slow soul t’other, with the staccato phrased bouncily lurching 116½-0bpm ‘It’s No Crime’ (apparently on single too), slinkily half stepping swingbeat 102½bpm ‘Tender Lover‘, infectiously undulating 100bpm ‘My Kinda Girl‘, gently jiggly swaying 100⅚bpm ‘Let’s Be Romantic‘, Jacksonesque joltingly rolling 112½bpm ‘Can’t Stop My Heart‘, while romantically tender and classy are the 73bpm ‘Whip Appeal’, 60/30bpm ‘Soon As I Get Home’, 78/39bpm ‘Given The Chance’, 66-0bpm ‘Sunshine’, 50/25bpm ‘Where Will You Go’.

ULTRAMAGNETIC MC’s ‘Traveling At The Speed Of Thought (Hip-House Club Mix)’ (US Next Plateau Records Inc NP50103)
Good if predictable 121⅙bpm hip house adaptation of their old album track, based now on Michael Zager’s ‘Let’s All Chant’ and the inevitable “yeah wooh” break beat, with different rock guitar overlaid Radio and Tone Loc-ish LP Versions plus the James Brown grunt punctuated rolling wordy rap 106½bpm ‘A Chorus Line‘ (respective instrumentals too).

BOOGIE DOWN PRODUCTIONS ‘Ghetto Music: The Blueprint Of Hip Hop’ (Jive HIP 80)
KRS-One created deliberately angry and hard-core aimed wordy rap album, more for listening than dancing, with the jogging swingbeat-ish 0-97⅔bpm ‘Ghetto Music’, joltingly rolling 100⅚bpm ‘Gimme Dat (Woy)‘, frantic reggae 0-150/75bpm ‘Bo! Bo! Bo!‘, 0-110bpm ‘You Must Learn‘, 95⅙bpm ‘Jah Rulez‘, 100⅚bpm ‘The Blueprint‘, 0-69½/139bpm ‘The Style You Haven’t Done Yet‘, 0-99⅙bpm ‘Breath Control‘, 104⅓bpm ‘Jack Of Spades‘, 96bpm ‘Why Is That?‘, 88½bpm ‘Hip Hop Rules‘, 86⅚bpm ‘Who Protects Us From You‘, 94-93⅙-94¾bpm ‘World Peace‘.

POP DANCE

KYLIE MINOGUE ‘Wouldn’t Change A Thing (Your Thang Mix)’ (PWL Records PWLT 42), Kylie gets funky — shock, horror! — or at least she gets the ‘Funky Drummer’ break beat added rather incongruously but effectively to this 12 inch mix of an otherwise blandly swaying early Sheena Easton-ish 109¾bpm Stock Aitken Waterman singalong, Mixmaster Phil Harding possibly being responsible for this (tongue in cheek?) manoeuvre;

TWO WITHOUT HATS ‘Try Yazz’ (Music Man MMPT-12-008, via Pinnacle), not what the title might lead you to expect, this in fact is a Yazoo ‘Don’t Go’ underpinned and other samples woven bright Euro-style pop-house wriggler, at 33⅓rpm in 122-0bpm E140th Street Club Yazz, Loca Dub No 1, Loca Dub No 2 and acappella Webopella Mixes, plus an 127-0bpm Original Rough Yazz Mix, about for a while on import and getting instant reaction now it’s out here;

PAUL RUTHERFORD ‘Oh World (Extended Mix)’ (Fourth & Broadway 12BRW 136), a plea for peaceful unity, this breathily agonised lushly arranged 0-119.6-0bpm bubbly canterer has the style if not the sound of Seventies Philadelphia and is winning much praise ahead of impatiently awaiting July 31 release;

VIOLA WILLS ‘Gonna Get Along Without You Now (The Les Adams Mixes)’ (Music Man MMPT 12-006, via Pinnacle), ostensibly created for release just in Spain but now out here anyway, this is a total re-recording by Les (LA Mix) Adams of Viola’s 1979 Hi-NRG classic, setting previously unused vocal out-takes from her original session to brand new breezy backings which (to comply with Les’s brief) are still “disco” though updated to lightweight Euro house style, liveliest in the jumping and jangling 124⅕bpm ’89 House Mix or more sedate in the pulsing and piping 120⅕bpm ’89 Remix and its 120⅕bpm Radio Edit;

WATERFRONT ‘Cry (Club Mix)’ (Polydor WONXA 1), Gail ‘Sky’ King remixed jerkily littering 103⅘bpm George Michael-like lurcher, big in the US and climbing here, the sort of carefully contrived production that’s maybe more coldly efficient than warmly loveable although admittedly there are hooks within it (and the singer looks studiedly cute!);

BROS ‘Too Much’ (CBS ATOMT 7), which inevitably leads us to this emptily frantic 156bpm jerky spurter, in which the Goss Bros go Hi-NRG;

DEBBIE GIBSON ‘We Could Be Together (House Mix)’ (Atlantic A8896T), Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley pulls no punches mixing up the powerful chunky rhythm of this 125bpm jumpily shuffling attractive plaintive pop ditty, with a useful instrumental 124¾bpm House Of Trix dub and less vigorous 124bpm Radio Mix (promoed ahead of August 7 release);

HITHOUSE ‘Move Your Feet To The Rhythm Of The Beat (Party Mix)’ (Supreme Records SUPET 149), more cornily dated but lively 122⅘bpm Dutch house (not for airplay on 12 inch, quoting Clivilles & Cole’s notorious “don’t be so f*”king serious”!), coupled with the old stuttery 118½bpm ‘Jack To The Sound Of The Underground (Terminal Remix)’ and flipped much more freshly by the beefily bounding instrumental 119¾bpm ‘The Deep Piano House‘ AA-side, which many should prefer;

BOXCAR ‘Freemason (You Broke The Promise) (Handshake Mix)’ (Arista 612 499), intriguingly titled but lyrically obscure Arthur Baker remixed synth jiggled wriggly 124½-0bpm US club hit, released here July 31, the nasal guy still not telling much of a story in the more concise Edit (there’s never any mention of an actual freemason), the flip’s bubblier bounding Shakedown Mix possibly being best;

YELLO ‘Blazing Saddles (Latinohouse Remix)’ (Mercury YELLOW 412), remixer Paul Dakeyne’s emptily jittering 123⅗bpm rhythm rather overpowers this amusing subtle send-up by Boris of Elvis Presley’s ‘Flaming Star’, with a similarly synthetic Latinohouse Dub too plus the Pascal Gabriel remixed 117-0bpm twanged and fluttered striding ‘I Love You (The Emilio Pasquez Rubber Band Mix)‘;

WENDY & LISA ‘Satisfaction (12″ Dance Mix)’ (Virgin VST T194), brightly insistent jiggly 103⅙bpm churning chugger building a groove that takes time to sink in before reaching some documentary-style deadpan dance instructions, and seguing straight on into a funkier short 12″ Dance Dub (funkily drummed Full Dub Mix flip), there now also being an Arabic chanting introed 108⅓bpm more purple but less beefy ‘Satisfaction (The US Remix)‘ (Virgin VSTX 1194) flipped by a similar instrumental Muppy’s House Version, which might as well be the totally different record that it is and rather misses the point;

FOUR TOPS ‘The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine (The Ben Liebrand Remix)’ (Arista 612 262), bass voice started then Levi Stubbs wailed Soul II Soul-ishly jiggling slow 87⅓-87½bpm roller (not the Walker Brothers’ The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore’);

SWING OUT SISTER ‘Where In the World (Radical Remix)’ (fontana SWI 712), as heard clearly in the pleasantly quickstepping 120½bpm 7″ Mix, their singing is based on the sophisticated Sixties style of the 5th Dimension and Dionne Warwick, but Pascal Gabriel’s remix buries it amidst busily pitter-pattering jiggly exotic 119¾bpm beats (the acappella outro maintaining the rhythm);

GLORIA ESTEFAN ‘Don’t Wanna Lose You’ (Epic 655054 1), plaintively whining 41-41/82bpm slowie in the usual quiet starting then building, lulling and crescendoing pattern that’s so boringly the norm for modern radio ballads;

SHAKATAK ‘Turn The Music Up (12″ Mix)’ (Polydor PZ 49), anxious Jill Seward sung untypical but still somehow dated thudding 115½bpm busy chugger, now also promoed at 33⅓rpm in a vocal-less thundering 114⅕-0bpm juddery so-called Electro Remix (Polydor PZR 49) sampling James Brown’s “everybody other there”;

<KISS AMC> ‘A Bit Of U2′ (Syncopate 12SY 29), raggedly rapping Mancunian girls’ untidy 122-0bpm hip house-ish jitterer sampling a few bursts of the chiming guitar from U2’s ‘New Year’s Day’, due soon for a remixed relaunch when it should hopefully be better, as the basic idea is good.
