NEW YORK City’s ‘Dixie Drifter’ soul DJ, Frankie Crocker is currently guesting with Tim Westwood on London’s Capital FM broadcasting between 9pm-1am all this week until Friday in a live simulcast heard at the same time in New York (only there, of course, it’s 4-8pm, his usual slot) on WBLS — although he’s likely to be playing Soul II Soul-type British black sounds to intrigue his audience back home, it will be a chance for those here who have yet to experience American black radio to hear one of its leading and most legendary practitioners . . . Tim Raidl and ‘Evil’ Eddie Richards have revived the Soul On Sound cassette tape aural magazine idea by launching the limited 1,000 copy mail order only Pure (House), the C90 format featuring each month an exclusively recorded UK mixing DJ on one side, flipped by interviews with not only that DJ but also a well known DJ/producer from abroad, a selected record store’s Top 10 sales countdown, plus new music by unsigned talent: costing £6 (from 68 Sunningdale, Round Green, Luton, Bedfordshire, subscription discount details on 0908-647632), issue one has Paul ‘Trouble Those Decks’ Anderson as guest mixer, an interview with Todd Terry, a Vinyl Zone chart plus tracks by Irresistible Force, while future issues will include Eddie Richards, Judge Jules, Paul Oakenfold, Kid Batchelor as mixers plus Frankie ‘Bones’, Louie Vega, Ralphi Rosario, Kevin Saunderson as interviewees . . . The UK chart-topping classic’s original Long Version (101¼bpm) and the similar jogging ‘Affection’ (100bpm) freshly coupled with, the big plus that’s selling it again, this more sparsely burbling sinuous remix augmented by different beats by none other than DJ Mark The 45 King, dropping a dubwise breakdown after the vocal’s briefly pausing false finish.

PRINCESS IVORI ‘Wanted’ (105¼bpm) (Supreme Records CLUB PROMO 2)
Poised to explode while only on single-sided UK promo ahead even, it seems, of her Popular Records import pressing, MC Shan’s unhurriedly chatting sly sister has adapted the Honey Cone’s 1971 US classic ‘Want Ads’ to make this “wanted, young men, single and free” chorused irresistible jiggler, catchy as hell and all over radio in London already.

SEDUCTION ‘Heartbeat (The Clivilles & Cole Club Mix)’ (99¾bpm) (US Vendetta Records VE-7034)
Clivilles & Cole created terrific buoyant rolling beefy bass driven powerful Soul II Soul-ish jogger by wailing April, Idalis and Michelle, likely to follow Mantronix up the chart now that this is the formula which, thankfully, seems to be bringing back soul in 1990, coupled with its funkily drummed The Clivilles & Cole Dub Mix (100bpm) plus the ‘Free Your Body (It’s Time To Get Hip House)‘ (120¾bpm) woven with cheeky samples.

ELECTRIBE 101 ‘Talking With Myself (Frankie Knuckles Mix)’ (113½bpm) (Mercury HIP 3)
Promoed well ahead of reissue, this haunting world weary girl moaned trend setter, punctuated with ‘Mission Impossible’, is now nearly a year old and is likely this time to soar in its new languid pattering remix.

OUT OF THE ORDINARY ‘Play It Again (The Los Ninos Mix)’ (122½bpm) (German Abfahrt ZYX 6199R-12)
First about last summer before this stronger remix surfaced in the autumn, this corny German ditty introed beefy creation features recent hit grooves (‘French Kiss’, ‘Ride On Time’ and many more like that) masterminded by Frankfurt DJ Torsten Fenslau and Jens Zimmermann. It’s flipped by a different quietly started then more electronic twittered “Why Don’t You Try This Side” Mix (126¾bpm), taking off now on import but boosted by a single-sided UK promo of just (here intro-less) The Los Ninos Mix (123bpm) (Supreme Records CLUB PROMO 1)

YOUNG M.C. ‘Principal’s Office (12-inch Version)’ (95¼bpm) (Delicious Vinyl 12 BRW 161)
London born Young MC wrote Tone Loc’s ‘Wild Thing’ and ‘Funky Cold Medina’ (the two biggest selling raps ever thanks to their rock content), and now he storms the club chart himself cataloguing in his own chatting style the relatively innocent misdemeanours that got him in trouble at school, to a lazily rolling piano break beat with Instrumental, Bonus Beats, and a slightly denser Impact Remix too.

FLOWMASTERS ‘Let It Take Control (Judge Jules Remix)’ (122¼bpm) (XL Recordings XLT-7)
Singled out from Frankie ‘Bones’ & Tommy Musto’s ‘Energy Dawn’ EP for further remixes, this stuttery title line washed instrumental galloper has a Radio Version and percussive Bass Beats too, plus the yowling guitar note punctuated and tubular bells chimed title rapping hip house-ish ‘House The Crowd (Freestyle Mix)‘ (120bpm).

SHABAZZ ‘Glad You’re In My Life’ (103bpm) (US RCA 9148-1-RD)
The Eric ‘Vietnam’ Sadler co-produced guys who previously rapped and sang ‘Respect’ return with an excellent properly soulful jogging mellow swayer in three mixes, flipped by the amusingly worded P’funk ‘Where’s Your Head (Between Your Shoulders Or Between Your Legs?)‘ (105bpm) in two mixes.

D.J. RENEGADE & M.C. MINT ‘It’s My Thing (Remix)’ (121½bpm) (Body Rock 12BRX 5, via Jet Star)
Remixed for the UK by the guys with Peter Hinds (three further mixes on the white label flip), this tough though brightly jiggling gruff rap continuously scratches in a girl wailed title line that might be but doesn’t really sound like Marva Whitney — any other ideas?

BEN MAYS ‘X-Rated (Club Mix)’ (125bpm) (Desire WANTX 21, via Pacific)
Breezy ‘French Kiss’ inspired bounder co-produced by Chris ‘Bam Bam’ Westbrook with a gasping and sighing girl who continually asks “do you ever fantasize”, with husky muttering Ben getting more of a look in on the flip’s sparse Jungle Mix (Dub Instrumental too).

LAST FEW DAYS ‘Kicks’ (131bpm) (fontana LFD 122)
Rather jaunty good washing machine gurgled and piano jangled frisky acidic flier, instrumental with punctuating comments or totally instrumental in its bassily resonant Sub Mix and drier Dungeon Mix, hot already at raves. It was promoed as just LFD! on otherwise info-less white label.

QUADROPHENIA ‘Paradise’ (117¾bpm) (Italian New Age AGE 301)
Sueno Latino-type (including some warbling birds) lovely lush swaying ambient pulser created by Severo Lombardoni with Chris Lynn’s exquisite rasping Gato Barbieri-ish sax and Marta Ferez’s muttered sweet nothings, in a more beefy trotting Jam Beat Version too.

THE BRAT PACK ‘You’re The Only Woman (The Cole/Clivilles Club Mix)’ (121¾bpm) (US Vendetta Records VE-7027)
Distinctive choppy phrased and harmonised striding slick house-ish bounder remixed by Clivilles & Cole, with whooshing jetstream effects also in its sturdy wriggling The Club Club Mix (sic) and more skittery The Dum-Dum Mix instrumentals, while for contrast there are a slower stark jittery The Jack Swing Mix (106¾bpm) and ‘Din Daa Daa’-type Bonus Beats (123¾bpm).

SIR JAMES ‘Special’ (US Strictly Rhythm SR 1203)
Refreshingly old fashioned soulfully nagged, piano jangled and synth twittered wriggly cantering New York house, in Club and Pumped-Up Mixes (121½bpm), Piano Dub (120½bpm), Trance Mix (121bpm) and Radio Edit (120bpm).

J.T COMPANY ‘Don’t Deal With Us (Club Version)’ (122½bpm) (Italian JT Company Rec. JTCR 0017)
About since November, this Joe T. Vannelli co-created moodily starting then brightly typical jangling and muttering good Italo house racer has four other differently treated mixes too.

ROYALLE DELITE ‘(I’ll Be A) Freak For You (FON Force Remix)’ (110bpm) (Supreme Records SUPET 157)
1984’s monster underground London soul sound newly remixed, this seductive girl nagged rolling stroller is flipped by not only its Dub (109¼bpm) but also for added value the original 1977 recorded, subsequently much imitated (let alone sampled), “it’s not over” repeating classic girl group wailed jerkily surging, shuffling and galloping FIRST CHOICE ‘Let No Man Put Asunder’ (120-117¾-122v bpm).

THE D.O.C. ‘No One Can Do It Better’ (Ruthless Records/Atlantic SAM 623)
Ostensibly a promo but selling in its own right if you can find it, this seven track sampler plugging the NWA associated rapper’s album of the same name has the previously charted fast talking jittery swirling ‘Portrait Of A Master Piece’ (122¼-122bpm), wordily jogging title track and its Instrumental (94¼bpm), rolling ‘It’s Funky Enough‘ and Instrumental (90¼bpm), slow declamatory ‘The DOC And The Doctor‘ (81¾bpm) and its Noisy Mix (81bpm).

D.M.S. ‘And The Beat Goes On’ (123bpm) (US Cutting Records CR-233)
Todd Terry created, ‘Little’ Louie Vega remixed, ‘French Kiss’-ishly driven (though constantly tempoed) friskily jolting instrumental studded with familiar samples — well, it would be, wouldn’t it? — in four mixes.

BY ALL MEANS ‘Let’s Get It On (Club Mix)’ (88bpm) (Fourth & Broadway 12 BRW 154)
Slinkily slow soulful tribute to the classic song’s originator, Marvin Gaye, remixed by Frankie Knuckles with similar inflections though more lushly harmonised support (Instrumental and Dub Mix too).

MAZE featuring Frankie Beverly ‘Silky Soul (Extended Version)’ (93bpm) (Warner Bros W2738T)
Similarly a Marvin Gaye tribute, this lovely gentle weaving swayer recreates the crowd chatter atmosphere of his ‘What’s Going On’ style without being one of his own songs (not noticeably much different Dance Mix too).

PRECINCT 13 ‘Listen To Your Heartbeat (Club Mix)’ (122½bpm) (Living Beat Records SMASH 8)
Revealed now to be the London creation of DJ Steve Proctor all along, rather than a supposedly genuine Italian Lombardoni recording as originally circulated, the robotically intoned title line repeating Italo house chugger (with many familiar quotes) is best in this mix but has thrashing Matrix Mix, Sueno Latino-ish Universe Mix (114bpm) and plodding House Mix (117¼bpm) variations too.

ROBYN ‘Searching’ (98½bpm) (Soultown SOUL 004)
Sweet soulful girls cooed weaving sultry jogger created by J.J. Halliday obviously inspired by Lisa Stansfield, though it’s more street soul in its structure, flipped by a Piano Mix.

BABY FORD ‘Beach Bump (Full Version)’ (122¼bpm) (Rhythm King 12 BFORD 6)
Electro throbbed swirling acidic jitterer with bursts of pop vocal and many episodic breaks, flipped by its more Italo-like stuttery jangling Beachbum’s Version and the unrelated good frisky striding washing machine gurgled ‘Wigan‘ (125bpm), while also on a separate limited edition are the Komix remixed non-acidic The Club Mixes (Rhythm King R12 BFORD 6) with a “voulez, voulez, voulez-vous toucher ce soir?” pop vocal emphasising gently loping US Bumpy Club Mix, stuttery then synthed unhurriedly cantering instrumental Life’s A Beach, and jangling stuttery Italo-style Disco Makes My Body Bump.

Schmaltzily attractive Imagination ‘Body Talk’-type piano tinkled and synthetic strings swirled chunky lurching instrumental jogger, with slightly slower 7-inch and Dub Mix Versions (102¼bpm).

D.J. ANDY SHAFTE Woohlambada! (Don’t Stop Dance When We Cut The Drum Mix)’ (124¾-125bpm) (Loco Records LOCO 999, via 01-490 1210), Italo flavoured ‘Lambada’ goes hip house-type lighthearted fun;

UB40 ‘Here I Am (Come And Take Me) (Extended Mix)’ (96bpm) (DEP International DEP 34-12), solidly workmanlike old fashioned reggae revival of Al Green’s 1973 US hit;

SAVUKA ‘Cruel, Crazy, Beautiful World (The Beautiful Mix)’ (115½bpm) (EMI 12EMX 120), Ben Chapman remixed afro flavoured chugger by Johnny Clegg’s apartheid busting South African group, with a good The Cruel Instrumental, much more mellow than the brassy Radio Version that’s likely to be more widely heard;

NITZER EBB ‘Lightning Man (The Industry vs. The Ebb Mix)’ (119½bpm) (Mute 12 MUTE 106), walking beefy bass pushed strider with bursts of raucous vocal and jangling piano, coupled by a totally different percussive fierce instrumental Renegade Soundwave Mix;

DEPECHE MODE ‘Enjoy The Silence (Bass Line)’ (113¼bpm) (Mute 12 BONG 18), Francois Kevorkian mixed disjointed sparse groove, coupled by Daniel Miller’s more smoothly thumping less radical Ricki Tik Tik Mix (112½bpm) and similarly guitar chimed mournful vocal 7-inch version, due next week (with four more remixes to follow on a limited 12);

KEVIN PAIGE ‘Don’t Shut Me Out (Dance Mix)’ (105bpm) Chrysalis CHS 12 3389), Bruce Forest & Frank Heller remixed tentatively started then jerky ponderous production-heavy US pop-rock hit.
