James Hamilton’s final column, 8th June 1996

LIVIN’ JOY ‘Don’t Stop Movin’’ (Undiscovered/MCA MCST 40041)
Clipped fast phrasing Tameka Star squalled romping Visnadi creation in plippy scurrying 130.2bpm Original Version, more tautly leaping Want-Will H-Mix, tapping bongos started then jerkily episodic cheesy synth and piano chords stabbed wailing 130-0-130bpm A-Manetta Mix, classier fluidly bounding 130.2-0bpm Gettin’ Right Mix and (neatly abutted for continuous play) its richly textured instrumental 0-130.2-0bpm Reprise.

HELICOPTER ‘On Ya Way’ (Systematic SYSX 27)
Simon Ratcliffe & Ryan Barns’s cheerful hypnotic ever shifting bouncy chugger still has its sombre synth chorused then Lee Oskar-like harmonica and jazz-funk piano prodded rattly loping 122.2bpm Original (on TicTacToe in March 1993), while from the July 1994 hit reissue on Helicopter is retained just the melancholy synthetic strings sawed then Oskar harmonica jabbed janglier jiggly spurting 0-122.3bpm Jules & Skins Pumped Up Club Mix, triple-pack promoed now with a much more brisk piano, harmonica, chords and chants driven galloping 127.7bpm Helicopter ’96 Mix, plus excitingly frantic clacky twangy pounding 128.7bpm Lisa Marie Experience, highly compressed smacking then chattery keyboard clattered flat out 130bpm Klubbheads On Ya Piano, repetitively chanted retro jerky jittery 126.8bpm Joey Musaphia Mixes.

D’LUX ‘Love Resurrection’ (Logic Records 74321 371012)
Less distinctively sung Alison Moyet remake’s electro throbbed mildly cheesy Italo style 125.9bpm Extended Mix, 0-125.8bpm 7″ Edit, synth growled bubbly scampering 132-0-132bpm Hyper Go-Go Remix, separately promoed tuneful Donna Summer-ish wriggly flying 129.7-129.6bpm Jupiter Remix, lighter 129.7bpm Jupiter Radio Edit, strange wiggly wobbly throbbing 126.2bpm Johnny Versace.

CULTURE BEAT ‘Crying In The Rain’ (Epic 663358 2/5)
Tania Evans wailed and gruff J. Supreme muttered Eurodisco (not the Everlys’ oldie), out on two CDs but promoed as separate 12-inchers, with typical jaunty 0-139.9-0bpm Radio Edit and Extended Version, amusingly accurate mid-Seventies pastiche 127bpm Sweetbox Funky 7″ Mix, and its (appropriately for that era) toughened up 12″ Mix, plus sparse drily throbbing 133-0bpm Celvin Rotane, rattly frantic galloping 0-140-0-140-0bpm Temple Of Light, swirly zizzing 0-139.4bpm Aboria Euro Mixes.

ICON featuring Juliette Jaimes ‘Tainted Love’ (Eternal WEA 0557)
Paul DaKeyne’s Gloria Jones/Soft Cell remake rattles into a blippy scuttling 140bpm Neuro-mantic Mix, with Mr Spring’s wobble board fluttered then odd dissonantly bleeped 140bpm Polykobol Mix and simpler breezily pulsed Moroder-ish 140-0bpm Tainted Dub (plus Paul’s own brightly trotting synths droned 132.2bpm ‘Dancin’’), separately promoed fizzily jittering frantic 140bpm Dizzy Kitten’s Mix, Stainless Dub, monotonous stuttery locomoting 130bpm Sharp Vocal Dub, Sharp D.T.P.M. Dub.

HAPPY CLAPPERS ‘Can’t Help It’ (Coliseum Recordings/Shindig/PWL International TOGA 004T)
Wailing Sandra Edwards dovetails into a Tony Rallo-ish chorus and gospel keyboards through composer/producer Chris Scott’s frisky joyous 126.2bpm Original 12″, promo twin-packed with less spontaneous 126.2bpm Grant Nelson’s Trinity Remix, breezier gospelish 126bpm Bagheads Club Mix, bubbly pattering 131.9bpm Pete ‘Shaker’ Bones Mix, lushly keyboarded than unexpectedly percussive bounding ultra exciting 0-127.2-127bpm Loosse Vocal Dub, rhythmically similar 127bpm Vegas Bassment Pressure Dub, rattling frantic 140.2bpm Candy Girls Remix.

THE HANDBAGGERS ‘U Found Out’ (Tidy Trax/Fusion Records UK TIDY 101)
Shola & Selina chanted nagging romp with its hottest mixes punctuated by the Depeche Mode ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ riff while all have elements from The Jets ‘Crush On You’, initially promoed over the new year with blippily chimed chugging stuttery surging sometimes Moroder-ish 139.7bpm Tradesman’s Mix, swirly tapping stuttery jangly thrumming 137.9bpm Strike Me Down Remix, Depeche driven breezily cantering 136.8bpm Handbag Mode Version, and then since April as a twin-pack (totally mislabelled on record two) with the above 137.9bpm Strike Me Down Mix (track C2) and Depeche driven 136.8bpm Handbag Mode Version, shorter (the CD’s Radio Edit) but still Depeche driven even breezier 136.8bpm Handbag 7″ Edit (track D2), Depeche jabbed blippily jiggled pulsing frenetic 139.8bpm Original Tidyman Mix (track C1), fluttery synth pulsed bounding (with Depeche only prominent in its CD mode) 139.9bpm Red Hand Gang Mix (track D1), Depeche-less reedy synth wriggled 140bpm Tony De Vit, piano pounded throbbing 0-137.8bpm Tom Wilson, tin cans rattled ultra frantic blippy 154.8bpm Hyperlogic Mixes.

OPEN ARMS featuring Rowetta ‘Hey Mr DJ’ (All Around The World 12 GLOBE 136, TRC/BMG)
Throaty diva hollered request promoed since early February, most recently in typical Gina G-ish bright tinkly cheesy chiming Euro 0-135.8bpm Motiv-8 Extended Vocal Mix and Nick Hook’s odd jerky rumbling plinky percussive chugging dubwise 130.7bpm Up Generation Mix, or earlier in Open Arms’ jangly galloping original 134bpm PWL Main and stuttery wriggling Dub Mixes, a moodily surging Afro-ish quavery 135bpm Sunshine State Remix, with a twittery then plonky surging 130bpm Bliss Mix of last year’s ‘I’ll Be There’.

BOB MARLEY ‘What Goes Around Comes Around’ (Anansi ANA 12002, P)
Legally revamped late Sixties soul track now in Alex Natale’s classily keyboarded loping almost Womack & Womack-ish 123.8bpm Alex Party Remix and chunkier jiggling Angels Of Love Dub, the Marley family’s reggaefied singalong jerky 98bpm Dancehall Version and jolting hip hop 90.5bpm Urban Reggae Mix.
