New Spins

STARGARD: ‘What You Waitin’ For’ (MCA 12MCA 382)
Absolutely dynamite Rose Royce-type funky bubbler, already exploding, on 3:37 7in or what I’m told is sensational six-minute 12in. I’ll believe it!

AL HUDSON & THE SOUL PARTNERS: ‘How Do You Do’ (ABC 4229)
Terrific thundering funky chugger with useful applause intro, huge on import, hits a James Brown-style groove that don’t quit for 5:49 of 12in!

LENNY WILLIAMS: ‘You Got Me Running’ (ABC 4228) (BNDA debut 7/29/78)
Great deceptively fast funky flier’s long been hitting on LP and now makes full 7:45 12in or edited 3:52 7in.

BROTHERS JOHNSON / L.T.D. / ATLANTIC STARR: A&M’s new Funk America series of three-track 12in EP’s is due this week, but was late reaching me so I don’t have the catalogue numbers. Bros Johnson features ‘Ain’t We Funkin’ Now’ / ‘Strawberry Letter 23’ / ‘Get The Funk Out Ma Face’, LTD features ‘Holding On’ / ‘Back In Love Again’ / ‘Love Ballad’, but Atlantic Starr does NOT feature ‘Stand Up’ . . . which seems kinda silly!

JEFF WAYNE: ‘The Eve Of The War’ (CBS 6496) (BNDA debut 2/16/80)[!]
Grandiose lush ‘n classy fast hustler, mainly instrumental, will be a massive pop smash.

LARRY PAGE ORCHESTRA: ‘Erotic Soul’ / ‘You Do It Good’ (Rampage DS RAM 6) (BNDA debut 7/16/77)
Thumping instrumental rhythm rattler from a year ago finally out here on 12in, should mix with the Criss/Manilow/Douglas type things. Nice new female vocal flip too.

BILL HALEY & HIS COMETS: ‘R-O-C-K’ / ‘Piccadilly Rock’ / ‘The Saints Rock ‘N Roll’ (MCA 10 MCEP 2)
Sensational 10in – yes, 10in! – four-track EP of rockin’ oldies.

THE JETS: ‘Rockabilly Baby’ (Soho SH 3)
Exciting fast UK rockabilly bopper, cleanly produced by Jailhouse John of Wild Wax fame.

SUGAR: ‘Manhattan Fever’ (Island WIP 6456)
Still worth checking, the zingy but funky fast galloper has a new label as Power Exchange have gone broke and folded.

NINA SIMONE: ‘Baltimore’ (CTI CTSP 14)
Haunting smoochy groin-grinder, already popular with funky gropers!

PIONEERS: ‘My Good Friend James’ (Ice GUY 14)
Lovely lazy soul swinger from a year ago (I’m biased, but it really is good!).

CHAPLIN BAND: ‘The Party Is Over’ (EMI 2817)
Exciting fast Euro bounder with funk appeal, edited to 2:48 from last year’s longer 12in.

PASSPORT: ‘Loco-Motive’ (from LP ‘Ataraxia’, Atlantic K 50496)
5:01 jazz fusion flier with choo-choo-puffa intro and synthesizer rhythm, now hot on 12in US remix promo though this sounds good too.

JOHNNIE TAYLOR: ‘Hey Mister Melody Maker’ (CBS 6516)
Pleasant pop-soul cymbal schlurper with long instrumental intro and funky rhythm break.

RANKING SUPER STAR: ‘Wisdom’ (D-Roy PF 008)
Rather good relaxed reggae swayer with laid back toasting.

MAJOR HARRIS: ‘Love Won’t Let Me Wait’ (Atlantic K 10585)
1974’s classic sexy soul smoocher.

MUSIQUE: ‘Summer Love’ / ‘Summer Love Theme’ (CBS 6579)
Oh dear – the import LP’s other hot tracks rocket in at 49 this week, while this bland girlie group hustler and its instrumental version flip haven’t had a mention.

D.C. LARUE: ‘Let Them Dance’ (from LP ‘Confessions’, Pye NSPL 28262) (BNDA debut 6/10/78)
Side-long segue, ends with this somewhat Giorgio-style fast gay pounder, big in New York on US 12in.

TOMMY HUNT: ‘Stop The Bus’ (RK 1012)
Lou Rawls-ish attractive radio-aimed “cabaret disco” for people who don’t normally dance.
