As you read this, Fatman, Froggy and myself will be settling into our private suite at New York’s Hilton Hotel. Yes, it’s Billboard Disco Forum time again, and next week hopefully you can read my account of what went on. The Forum rather inconsiderately is over the weekend this time, but I am assured that various couriers can get my copy to you before I get back myself. It looks as if an even bigger contingent of British will be there for this the sixth forum, so it should be really great fun though sadly not many ordinary DJ’s seem to be going, despite the cost being within the reach of most professionals. For anyone getting this before flying over, Ferne’s phone number is 201-945 (continued on page 52).

Imports
CHAIN REACTION: ‘Sweet Lady (Dance With Me)’ (US Jam Sessions JAM-L-101)
What a monster! The 128bpm syndrums intro has obviously been made especially to mix with Anita Ward – even a tone-deaf idiot should synchronize ‘em successfully! – before an imperceptible drop to 122bpm for a great happily jumping chunky funker that slides up again on 7:20 12in to a 125bpm break and 124bpm cold finish.
FREDDIE JAMES: ‘Get Up And Boogie’ (US Warner Bros. DWBS 8857) (BNDA debut 7/7/79)
Bass-bumped rattling 131bpm thudder on 7:02 12in is powerful and infectious enough to cut through the “slam bam wham jam” – chanting chix and what presumably is a juvenile chap singing the plaintive lead.
FRANCIE SIMONE: ‘Let Your Body Run’ (US BC BC-4001) (BNDA debut 8/4/79)
Exciting bright and breezy 130bpm romper from Brooklyn with Bombers-type pop appeal on 6:30 12in features lots of rattling percussion and almost Oriental effects (though the title is probably not to do with Chinese restaurant food!).
BUNNY SIGLER: ‘I’m Funkin’ You Tonight’ (US Gold Mind GG 501)
Circulated here as the white label promo flip to the original ‘By The Way You Dance’, this remixed 5:30 12in is an extremely powerful heavy slow 101bpm funk lurcher with great wild animal-like grunting.
CURTIS MAYFIELD: ‘Heartbeat’ LP (US RSO RS-1-3053) (‘Tell Me, Tell Me’ BNDA debut 9/15/79)
Also consistently good, the hot cuts likely to be the syndrums ‘n strings-sweetened 6:20 ‘Tell Me, Tell Me (How Ya Like To Be Loved)’ creamy 120bpm “rock” dancer (which gets orgasmic!), jittery syndrums intro-ed smoothly-sung intense 7:15 ‘What Is My Woman For?’ 108/54bpm bumping swayer, and pleasant 110bpm title track jogger, while the 59/29bpm ‘Between You Baby And Me’ is a lovely smoochy duet with Linda Clifford.
HERB ALPERT: ‘Rise’ (US A&M SP 12022) (BNDA debut 7/28/79)
Mexican-flavoured (so now more Chuck Mangione than Tijuana!) plodding 100bpm jazz instrumental thudder on specially packaged 7:40 clear vinyl 12in which when speeded up to 45rpm (as most jocks are doing) becomes a racing 136bpm romper – though Herb’s trumpet still seems slow! Nice 129bpm (at 33 1/3) ‘Aranjuez (Mon Amour)’ flip too.
LENNY WILLIAMS: ‘Love Current’ LP (US MCA MCA-3155)
The high-flying soulster’s consistent set is led by the slow-starting 6:07 ‘If You’re In Need’ 128bpm skipping thumper with jazzy piano, intense chugging 4:55 ‘Doing The Loop De Loop’ repetitive 117bpm thudder with harmonica and brass, and melodically rolling 4:49 ‘When I’m Dancin” 112bpm chugger, but also good are the superb ‘Let’s Talk It Over’ 32bpm smoocher with pent-up climax and ‘Three Times A Lady’-like dead slow 27bpm ‘Here’s To The Lady’. Other cuts (all nice) are ‘Last Night I Dreamed’ (100bpm), ‘Love Hurt Me’ (65bpm), ‘Sweet Ecstasy’ (113bpm), ‘Though We Loved Once’ (31bpm).
STEPHANIE MILLS: ‘What Cha Gonna Do With My Lovin’’ / ‘Put Your Body In It’ (US 20th Century Fox TCD-86) (BNDA debut 6/2/79)
Nifty 12in coupling of her two UK biggies, the gorgeous 102/51bpm 8:02 LP title track swayer and gradually unfurling 6:00 bass-bumped 119bpm jitterer.
ASHFORD & SIMPSON: ‘Found A Cure’ (US Warner Bros. DWBS 8874) (BNDA debut 7/14/79)
Purposefully thumping 123bpm 7:00 12in “rock” remix of their ‘Stay Free’ LP track, dominated by the driving rhythm with some nice piano between repetitive soul-searing vocal bursts.
RENA SCOTT: ‘Super Lover’ (US Buddah DSC 133)
Picking up jocks, this quietly effective 6:00 12in puts an agonised female wailer subtly going bananas with a smooth couldn’t-care-less 120-126bpm backing to create a sort of soulful Donna Summer effect.
BAZUKA: ‘(C’Est) Le Rock’ (US Venture VD 5004)
Tony Camillo returns on 6:10 12in with a fast (though not frantic) 135bpm girlie group churner featuring some breathy “c’est l’amour” additions to the title and a spiraling rattling and clapping rhythm drive. The 139bpm ‘Rock The Night Away’ flip DOES get frantic!
SYLVESTER: ‘Stars’ / ‘Body Strong’ (US Fantasy D-135) (BNDA debut 3/24/79)
Remixed, extended and actually getting played now by some of London’s mafia, the two loosely-structured meandering chooglers clock in here on 12in, at 126-132-130-135-132bpm and 10:31 (‘Stars’) – as opposed to Britain’s 132-135bpm 8:06 version (12FTC 177) – and 128-132bpm and 8:44 (‘Body Strong’), which is the same as our 8:10 version. Now give me a medal for enduring them so long . . . how about the BPM?!
MUNICH MACHINE: ‘Body Shine’ LP (US Casablanca NBLP 7137) (BNDA debut 6/30/79)
With a few supporters here, the Giorgio-produced monotonous but powerfully pounding 114bpm girlie group-sung ‘Party Light’ and ditto 124bpm clomping ‘Let Your Body Shine’ seem to be the cuts.
JIMMY CASTOR BUNCH: ‘Don’t Do That’ (US Cotillion DK 4731)
Solidly chugging 116bpm bass line behind growling and a happy “the beast, the beast – don’t do that!” chant, leading on 7:08 12in to a sax break.
JIMMY BRISCOE & THE BEAVERS: ‘Into The Milky Way’ (US Salsoul SG 302)
Veteran group’s atmospheric but slow to get going attractive Smokey Robinson-ish 113bpm soul clopper has a freaky space-talk intro yet is too laid-back for immediate dancefloor appeal. On 12in in 7:54 original and 8:08 disco mix versions.
DEBBIE PETERS: ‘Boogie With Me Baby’ (US Free Flight PD-11488)
Taste Of Honey-type 124bpm oogie oogie chugger on yellow vinyl 6:26 12in, with a probably preferable 5:04 Diana Ross-ish 52bpm ‘Baby It’s Alright’ swaying flip that’s certainly worked for me already.
SIREN: ‘Open Up For Love’ (US Midsong MD 513) (BNDA debut 8/4/79)
Frantic-seeming 130bpm shrill girlie group chanter with pushing bass pattern on 7:12 12in.
BILLY NICHOLS: ‘Give Your Body Up To The Music’ (US West End WES-22118) (BNDA debut 7/21/79)
Emphasis-shifting long intro on 7:40 12in to a breathy but boring 127bpm romper with rattling break.
RUTH WATERS: ‘Never Gonna Be The Same’ (US Millennium YD-11777) (BNDA debut 7/21/79)
Smoothly sung but relentlessly pounding John Davis-produced 130bpm repetitive churner on 7:30 12in, possibly too unvaried for its potential pop audience.
AKB: ‘Stand Up – Sit Down’ (US RSO RSS-302) (BNDA debut 7/21/79)
Long plonking and phasing intro to a mundane 126bpm girlie group rattler on 8:11 12in.
