HOT VINYL

McGEE: ‘Now That I Have You’ (US American Dream Records Ltd AD 541)
My much played fave of the week, a dynamite steadily grooving 97-98¼bpm hot tempo rolling groin grinder soulfully teased by the dual-tracked semi-falsetto Tommy McGee over Norman Harris-arranged scratchy strings and some jazzy sax, a real mind grabber for getting lost in! So good it doesn’t matter that the flip merely repeats the A-side.

MARGIE JOSEPH: ‘Midnight Lover’ (Atlantic B9713T)
Finally out here on 3-track 12in, this snappily kicking 115¾bpm romper unashamedly copies its zest from ‘Holiday’ (with which it mixes superbly), flipped for excellent value by two more killers from her recent LP, the stolidly smacking 114bpm ‘Big Strong Man‘ and Aretha-ish 116bpm ‘I Wants Mo’ Stuff‘. Hot Stuff!

MATT BIANCO: ‘Matt’s Mood II’ (LP ‘Whose Side Are You On’ WEA WX7 240 472-1)
The jitterbugging and samba sashaying popsters proved their hip credibility with the (included) jazzy (0-)105bpm ‘Matt’s Mood‘ instrumental, and this more freely flowing 120bpm follow-up features mid ’60s-style organ and brass over busy percussion (it’s also on promo 12in) — however, what’s exciting album-buying jocks is the timely Gilberto-ish bossa nova 107bpm ‘Half A Minute‘ (friskier than the BPM suggests), which is really excellent.

EUGENE WILDE: ‘Gotta Get You Home Tonight’ (US Philly World Records PWR-2021) Simplicious by their/his new name sounds far more soulful on a classy laid back gentle but intense 93bpm jogger right in the groin grinding groove, reminiscent of a fully orchestrated ‘Sexual Healing’, mixed by Martinelli & Todd (inst flip).

GOODIE: ‘Because Of You’ (US Total Experience TED1-2607)
Sounding for a moment like it’s the wrong speed, but in reality merely ultra-slinky, this sensuously rolling 77¼bpm smoocher is sorta Lowrell meets Mtume with some ace soprano sax to sweeten the romantic pain — phew! The initially tempoless instrumental dub flip might sound good varied down a bit from the 104½bpm it would be at 45rpm!

HASHIM: ‘We’re Rocking The Planet’ (US Cutting Records CR-203)
Beefily moody densely juddering instrumental hip hop with plenty of variation in the rhythm attack, treated very differently in three mixes — the Steve Peck-mixed 117⅓-117⅔bpm A-side is followed by a starker 117⅔bpm bonus while potentially another ‘Al-Naafiysh’ is the much fuller 0-118⅓-118⅔-119bpm Aldo Marin-mixed flip (continuous despite a separately banded Bonus).

RUN-D.M.C.: ’30 Days’ (US Profile PRO-7051)
Monsters in the States, whore they have to be seen live for full appreciation, the hip hop stars’ jolting stark 119bpm rap packs both message and rhythm interest into the barest minimum of ingredients (inst flip). Less likely to cross over here, but the best rap since ‘White Lines’ . . . and that, remember, came out in the US exactly this month a year ago!

LEON HAYWOOD: ‘Tenderoni’ (US Modern Records 0-96918)
Presumably reviving the classic old R&B label (but now via Atlantic), Leon’s newie also revives his late ’70s sound in a ‘Bad Mama Jama/Ladies Night’-like 0-111/55½-111⅓bpm jiggling brassy strutting lurcher full of familiar licks (inst flip). Ooh whee!

BONNIE POINTER: ‘Johnny’ (LP ‘Bonnie Pointer’ US Private I Records FZ 39406)
The Sisters’ sister obviously had a close shave before posing for the sleeve (cor!) of her Jeffrey Bowen-produced patchy set, on which this Brian Holland co-produced soulfully soaring loosely strutting 113bpm chugger is the stand out, Greg Perry co-producing the more friskily shuffling 119bpm ‘If The Price Is Right‘ and datedly flying 122bpm ‘Under The Influence Of Love‘, her current single ‘Your Touch‘ here being an un-remixed 0-119bpm while other cuts include the jolting pop 0-114bpm ‘Tight Blue Jeans‘ and two frantic rock-disco racers.

HAYWOODE: ‘I Can’t Let You Go’ (CBS TA 4664)
Quick-produced familiar repetitive emphatically chanted 112bpm lurcher really nicely sung by Sid but a lot less compulsive than her first hit as the dated rhythm structure holds it back (inst flip).

REBBIE JACKSON: ‘Centipede’ (US Columbia 44-05047) Prod/penned by her brother Michael (eek!), this rather disappointing (0-)117bpm messy lurcher has Rebbie hissing and wailing nicely to a jerky over-obviously electro rhythm pattern which tends to dominate the song’s structure until things loosen up a bit (inst flip). I like sticky little feet!

BARBARA ROY: ‘With All My Love’ (Arista ARIST 12-578) One half of Barbara & Brenda, whose 1964 ‘Hurtin’ Inside‘ was on a par with the Soul Sisters, Barbara Jean Haskins also led Ecstasy Passion & Pain (and is Jocelyn Brown’s auntie!), her Roy Be-Produced newie being a less interesting 120bpm judderer influenced by Shannon, but with a better 119bpm dub flip which borrows from ‘White Lines’!

MR. T: ‘MR T’s Commandment’ (US Columbia 44-05083)
Showing where his appeal lies the sleeve poses Mr T surrounded by kids, his gruff rap being maybe mixed too low in the Patrick Henderson-produced slightly ponderous 107bpm all-purpose hip hop backing, which with more imagination could have been another ‘The Crown’ (inst flip).

NIK KERSHAW: ‘Human Racing’ (MCA NIKT 5)
Really unexpected, this slinky 96bpm delight sounds just like Stevie Wonder singing a Timmy Thomas song and were it not so obviously an instant smash it could have fooled a lot of people!

SHAKATAK: ‘Don’t Blame It On Love’ (Polydor POSPX 699)
Taking the emphasis right away from their old cliched sound (in a mix different from the LP’s), this sultry jiggly 103bpm jogger starts with chinking guitars over the dry rhythm before Gill and the girls join in with just a bit of subdued piano. On 4-track 12in there’s also an 111bpm US Dub Mix of ‘Down On The Street‘, c127bpm ‘Night Birds – Live In Japan‘, and chunkily bounding 122bpm ‘If You Want My Love (Come And Get It)‘, while their listenable album ‘Down On The Street’ (POLD 5148) has its share of pseudo-jazzy tinklers and smoochers, plus the frantic Burundi Black-ish c227bpm ‘Fire Dance‘.

STEVE DRAYTON: ‘Stop Playing With My Love’ (Master Mix 12CHE 8407)
Tapping and rumbling in ‘Plane Love’-ish style but otherwise much more shrill, ponderously juddering 104bpm lurcher with noisily keening vocal line and good stark break (inst dub flip).

KRAFTWERK: ‘Tour De France (Remix)’ (EMI 12EMI 5413)
Remixed by Francois Kevorkian and hotter than ever thanks to inclusion in the ‘Breakdance’ flick, this panting introed and punctuated 0- 129bpm electro skitterer has newly hardened busy stark fast beats, on 3-track 12in with its more vocal 129bpm “French” version and faster here 132bpm 7in edit.

MICHAEL JONZUN & THE JONZUN CREW: ‘Time Is Running Out’ (Tommy Boy/Polydor POSPX 698)
Prince-influenced fast skittering 127bpm electro (rhythmically quite like Kraftwerk) with hollering and chanting vocals, hardest in its Overtime Mix (vocal/Last Minute Mix dub flip).

SPLIT IMAGE: ‘Kiss And Make It Better’ (Capitol 5377)
Acappella punchy “ooh — let me show you what a kiss can do” introed, chick-led brightly poppy little 118bpm burbling group chugger in sort of early Jackson 5 style, likely to cross over.

MONA RAYE: ‘I’ve Been Watching You’ (US West End WES 22176)
Quite sneaky sinuously weaving slow 106bpm jogger with Mona moaning and wailing through the purposeful bass and electro beats to satisfying effect (inst/edit flip).

RANDY HALL: ‘I’ve Been Watching You (Jamie’s Girl)’ (MCA MCA-912)
Ray Parker Jr-produced jauntily tripping little 112½bpm chugger lightly sung with soulful yelps over chanting chix and bubbling bass, rather Richard ‘Dimples’ Fields/Oliver Cheatham, hitting Stateside on 7in.

CIRCLE CITY BAND: ‘My Place’ (US Becket BKD-522)
Loosely rolling burbling c122bpm shuffler with repetitive “I’ve been watching you” lyrics (there’s a lot of it about — see above!) flipped by a Long Club Mix, simple and none too special though possibly a nagger.

RALPH MacDONALD: ‘In The Name Of Love’ (LP ‘Universal Rhythm’ US Polydor 823 323-1 Y-1)
Most economical way of buying the best tracks is to get the UK 12in and this on US 7in, a very gentle Bill Withers sung 46-92bpm drifter with Randy Brecker’s trumpet soloing, flipped by the bicycle bell including odd percussive little 102bpm ‘Play Pen‘ tapper, other cuts being a fast Lou Rawls-ish 138bpm bounder ‘(It’s The) Game‘, tricky c108/216bpm Latin samba ‘Park Plaza‘ and Yogi Lee-sung dead slow ‘Tradewinds’, the sleeve credits being a predictable thrill for train spotters.

RICHIE WEEKS: ‘Your Next Door Neighbor’ (US Ascot ASCOT 106)
Knocking introed then bassily untidy c120½bpm jerky lurcher with a “hi hi hi, I’m your next door neighbour” message — so if you’re feeling lonely girl you know what to do —punctuated by some hip hop-style smurfs and smashes (dub flip).

SINNAMON: ‘Thin Line’ (US Powerhouse PH 111)
Darryl Payne-prod/Shep Pettibone-mixed skittery electro beats, packing a chest cavity shaking bass frequency, litter this chix wailed c116bpm judderer, quite bright sounding thanks to a blatant rip-off of Donna Summer’s old ‘toot toot beep beep’ from ‘Bad Girls’ (inst flip).

GEORGE McCRAE: ‘Own The Night’ (President PT 12-530)
John Luongo-mixed odd jangly chugging 0- 120⅔bpm thudder, instrumental for the long slow start and first two minutes before George gets all impassioned over an interesting strong arrangement that may sound best on radio (inst flip).

STONE: ‘Puppet’ (US Sunnyview SUN 415)
Chick sung shrill fast c128bpm jerker with catchy “video game” synth sounds (inst flip), much played on London radio.

T-CONNECTION: ‘You Can Feel The Groove’ (US Capitol 5373)
Vigorously lurching 123bpm backbeat bounder soulfully sung over the funky beat.

PURE ENERGY Featuring Lisa Stevens: ‘One Hot Night’ (US Prism ITP 204)
Competent if uninspiring monotonous electro juddered c115bpm jitterer with Lisa eventually squeaking along (dub/edit flip).

ROYALLE DELITE: ‘(I’ll Be A) Freak For You’ (US Skyview SKR 5800)
Chix cooed juddering little c110bpm clopper, a bit monotonous (inst flip).

BARBARA PENNINGTON: ‘All American Boy’ (Record Shack SOHOT 28)
One of Ian Levine’s original hitmakers returns (her ’24 Hours A Day’ was a US dance smash in ’77) on a catchily cantering 125bpm galloper soulfully wailed with brassy backing and butch “I’m your all American boy” interruptions (inst flip), initially white labelled.

STEVE GRANT: ‘Run For Cover’ (Record Shack SOHOT 26)
Tight Fit’s original hunk whinnies and squeaks through a snappy fast 180bpm Motown style shuffler deliberately intended as a sort of Phil Collins ‘Tell Her About It’/Billy Joel ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’ (inst flip), now remixed and useful sounding for pop jocks.

MAGGIE: ‘Beat Of The Night’ (Canadian Polydor PDSX 2259)
Not our leaderene, just some Canadian squawking over a dull jiggly 125bpm backing that seems to go on forever before reaching the mandatory “peaks” (inst/edit flip).

  1. That lead-reviewed McGee track is a great find – it’s a remake of an older recording, also good and since re-pressed, but the remake sadly goes for £££.

  2. Royalle Delite’s ‘I’ll Be A Freak For You’ may have been the last single reviewed by James that week – and he was obviously underwhelmed – but that track hung around on the underground, finally getting a UK release two years later (on Streetwave).
