Steve Walsh’s funeral was attended by so many – all the “names” in the business you can think of (apart from noticeably, the old jazz-funk “mafia”) – that most were outside the chapel in the sun listening to the service on loudspeakers, over which at the end was played ‘I Found Lovin’’, which initially gave one a start (but not as much as the unfortunate way in which the smoke from his cremation then blew down onto the departing mourners) … Paul Hardcastle was one of the very last people Steve spoke to on the telephone just before his fateful operation, asking “I’ll be alright, won’t I?” … Gary Smith and Peter Ferrant were due to have Steve with them at Romford’s Hollywood two weeks ago, so turned it into a tribute night and raised £2,900 towards his family’s trust fund (they also got 1,800 rowdy clubgoers giving him a minute’s silence!) … Thursday, August 18 is the date for the Hammersmith Le Palais benefit night for Steve’s family, which the Disco Mix Club are organising – one can see why they would leap in, but they’ve caused resentment amongst some of Steve’s longer standing colleagues … Bomb The Bass’s long awaited follow-up is a double A-side, the Merlin-featuring ‘Megablast (Hip Hop On Precinct 13)’ being another ‘Beat Dis’-type 0-114⅓-0bpm jerky shuffler full of rather tired samples, and the Lorraine-featuring ‘Don’t Make Me Wait’ a reedy shrill 0-119¾-0bpm Latin hip hop jitterer, both a bit disappointing … Public Enemy’s import LP is now out here (Def Jam 452415 1) … Full Force’s remix of James Brown ‘Static’ is due here early August … Ben Liebrand has remixed the Four Seasons ‘Oh What A Night (December 1963)’, out in Europe already but unfortunately I can’t tell you what it’s like as it was only sent me on CD! – speaking of which, amongst their many other compact disc dance music releases, Germany’s BCM Records have kicked off a four-track ‘Classic Dance Tracks On CD’ series, Volume 1 (BC 50-2150-44) featuring Fred Wesley ‘House Party’, Stone ‘Time (Tic Toc Remix)’, Rod ‘Shake It Up (Do The Boogaloo)’ and Michael Zager Band ‘Let’s All Chant’ (the recent remake) … Raul featuring J Bonell ‘Guitarra’ (Spanish Blanco Y Negro), now a Euro smash, could be a Balearic Beat worth checking, probably compatible with the big instrumental remixes of both the Thrashing Doves ‘Jesus On The Payroll’ (US A&M) and Mandy Smith ‘I Just Can’t Wait’ (PWL Records), all having been reviewed at different stages in the past … Supreme Records still haven’t released the Project Club ‘Dance With The Devil’ commercially yet – originally scheduled for June, it’s finally out on July 25, by which time it’ll be far from “the first” Balearic Beat single! – the finished copy’s Balearic Mix being very slightly altered and coupled now with the also 120¼bpm but very different raucously sung house-ish ‘Amnesia (Up All Night Mix)’ alternative treatment of the same rhythm, minus any chimes … Balearic, as feared, is already being used by record companies as a tag with which to try and foist any old rubbish onto the public … Jon Jules, Glen Gunner, Jagger, Rocky and Diesel, plus Adrenalin MOD member Richie Fermié playing acid live, have turned every other Tuesday (that’s fortnightly, next one July 26) at Greenford’s Barbarellas into “the hottest Balearic night outside Spectrum” – they actually get many Spectrum and Trip regulars coming for a sweat with them! … Graham Gold’s re-edit is in fact “the more brightly remixed B-side” of the Hudson Giants, reviewed last week from inaccurate label copy, Pascal Gabriel’s remix being therefore the frankly less good A-side – Jeff Young, incidentally, played Graham’s Public Enemy megamix on Radio 1 last Friday … Cornish mixing DJ Tristan Bolinho now precedes the relayed Radio 1 chart on BBC Radio Bristol every Sunday afternoon with a well positioned soul show, which I managed to hear while driving all the way from Somerset to Bournemouth, plus he hosts what I presume also to be a soul show for two hours every weekday evening on the same station – nice work, if you can get it! … I’ve been so swamped by the last minute arrival of overdue mail that there’s no time to review albums this week by such as Burrell (already BPM-ed in The Club Chart last week), Masters Of Ceremony, James ‘D-Train’ Williams on import, and many more out here … Burrell are twins called Ronnie and Rheji, which (spelling apart) might sound familiar! … I actually began my DJ-ing career in a club, Esmerelda’s Barn, owned by the more infamous twins, Ronnie and Reggie Kray, and as a matter of coincidence bought my mobile disco equipment exactly 20 years ago this month, and am still using it – the very first purpose built mobile unit ever made, it was built to last by Pepe Rush, who in the Sixties was the pioneer of club sound installation, the console he sold me actually being a prototype which needed to be adapted for little things like tape input/output! The West London DJ/remixer/instrumentalist’s thudding jittery scurrying 119-0bpm Players Association revival takes a while to become recognisable but then there’s no disguising the distinctive jiggly guitar and braying brass that he’s wisely retained amidst (for once!) his own breathy vocals, while the flip is a screams greeted good jittery bounding 0-118¾-0bpm ‘House On The Move’ jazzy keyboards and guitar instrumental with occasional vocoder and girls choruses, almost better than the plug side.

DELUXE ‘(I’ve Got A) Feeling’ (The Dance Yard Recording Corporation/Unyque Artists UNQ 3T, via Spartan)
Delores ‘Deluxe’ Springer follows up ‘Your Loving Drives Me Crazy’ with another sultrily crooned sparse sinuous 84½bpm bumpily jogging “street soul” swayer that was recorded in Master ‘The Beatcreator’ Tee’s bedroom studio, flipped by the equally sparse 108bpm ‘My Mama And Papa Always Told Me (Club Remix)’ and gently jiggling (0-)105bpm ‘Passionately’, with some male rap and ragged harmony, all of them enough off-key in lovers rock vocal style to give them that nagging charm.

MR LEE ‘Pump Up London (Club Mix)’ (London USAT 639)
Possibly anthemic enough to be the first real acid house crossover hit, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Nottingham, Leeds, Scotland and various UK clubs being namechecked as well as London during the bursts of staccato chanting in this Mike ‘Hitman’ Wilson-mixed acid synth sizzled 125¾-126bpm thumper, flipped by a brand new 125½bpm Acid Dub and the import’s 125¾-0bpm Acid Mix of ‘Pump Up Chicago’.

ALEXANDER O’NEAL ‘(What Can I Say) To Make You Love Me’ (Tabu 452852 6)
His last album’s most soulful floorfiller, a multi-tracked swirling and strutting joyous 115-0bpm chunky lurcher, is finally released almost as an afterthought with little promotion, and doesn’t even rate a remix on three-track 12 inch along with the older 0-100½bpm ‘A Broken Heart Can Mend’ and 0-101½bpm ‘You Were Meant To Be My Lady (Not My Girl) (Extended Dance Mix)’, as if they didn’t want to sell it.

AL B. SURE! ‘Off On Your Own (Girl) (Remix)’ (Warner Bros/Uptown W7870T)
Rather than the import’s main Street Mix, we get just the teasing trickily introed 97⅔-97½-97⅓-97⅙bpm Remix (almost more dub than song) of this squeakily whined and muttered repetitive nagging bouncy soul half-stepper, plus its tighter jittering (0-)98-97½bpm Radio Edit and the 0-91½bpm ‘Noche Y Dia’ Spanish translation of ‘Nite And Day’.

HARDCORE ‘Take It From The Top’ (US NuBeat Records VL 9759)
Hank Shocklee-mixed terrific jumpy 100½bpm rap ‘n’ scratch based on James Brown’s ‘I Got Ants In My Pants (And I Love To Dance)’ rhythm, coupled by the “bust that groove”-scratching ‘Tramp’-based 0-99½bpm ‘A Different Groove’ and bumpily surging 101bpm ‘High Time’ (plus instrumentals).

JUNGLE BROTHERS ‘I’ll House You’ (US Idlers WAR-022)
Todd Terry at least gets a label credit as arranger of this 0-121½bpm “house” rap dubbed over Royal House’s ‘Party People/Can You Party’ (‘Housepella’ and less vocal ‘(A House Is Not A Hut) I’ll Show You’ versions too), flipped by their current LP’s throbbing groove based 111¾bpm ‘On The Run’ (also in three versions).

OCEAN ‘You Are (To Be Mine)’ (Ocean 001-008, via Jet Star)
Betty Anne Semper-led North Londoners debuting in dated rare groove style on a soulful 0-91⅔-94⅔-96⅙-97¼bpm wriggly jogging swayer with an obviously non-mechanical backing and mushy lush male harmonies, pleasantly old fashioned.

DEEPAK AND KHAN ‘Holle, Holle (Indian Acid Trip)’ (Circa Records YRT 14)
New York DJ Mark Kamins is planning a ‘United House Nations’ album, from which, following his Arabic excursion as Sheik Fawaz, now comes this percussively cantering 121¾-0bpm trip up the Ganges, with twanging sitar and Indian-type chanting, plus a piano chorded bounding instrumental 121½-0bpm Alright In Raj’s House flip that’s not Indian at all (in fact both are more Balearic than Bhangra).

CODE 61 ‘Drop The Deal’ (German BCM Records BC 12-2062-60)
One of the most frequently mentioned original Balearic Beats from last year, apparently due out here soon although still on import if you’re desperate, this percussively tapping 0-99⅚-0bpm chugger weaves through an Arabic melody and samples of the Pope, movie dialogue and calypso (instrumental flip), an ethno-flavoured – as in Ofra Haza – bass bomber that was perhaps ahead of its time.

MC EZ & TROUP ‘Just Rhymin’’ (US Fresh Records FRE-80121)
James Brown brass cutting, stuttery scratching, and steadily chatting 112bpm drums bumped rap, flipped by the even more lethargically chatted 90½bpm ‘Get Retarded’, big in Bristol (both with dubs).

T-COY ‘Night Train’ (deConstruction Records M 6262)
Manchester’s housemasters return with a jiggling bubbly 116bpm Latin-flavoured wriggler featuring some jangling piano and mournful male vocal (it’s a new tune, not the oldie, and not in fact very “house” either), flipped on this advance promo by the even more Latin and jangly stark (0-)116bpm ‘Keep On Drivin’’ dub version.

LAZY & LISA + We Rock Hard ‘Bad Young Sisters’ (Ahead Of Our Time CCUT 3, via Big Life)
Coldcut created 0-100⅙-0bpm quite amusingly vicious “dis” – if not downright attack – on Derek B by some young girl rappers who don’t care if his mother gets vexed, flipped by a more positive alternative ‘Dedications’ treatment that says “yo!” to the home boys.

RUN-D.M.C. ‘Mary Mary’ (London LONX 191)
Raucously shouting and scratching 115¼bpm rap treatment of a jerkily spurting old Monkees song (instrumental too), the only track from their latest LP to mean much, flipped by the old ponderously rocky 0-84½bpm ‘Raising Hell’.

LONDON BEAT ‘There’s A Beat Going On (There’s A House Going On)’ (AnXious ANXH 004, via RCA)
Veteran singers Jimmy Chambers, George Chandler and Jimmy Helms, plus producer Willy M, holler datedly in Edwin Starr style to a newly remixed jittery 119¾bpm house rhythm that’s quite exciting, if not the most convincing of concoctions.

NUMARX ‘S.P.E.N. (The Confusion)’ (BlueBird BT 5)
Excitingly shouting and scratching 0-102⅓bpm rap cutting up KC & The Sunshine Band (“uh-huh”) and more while the self-identifying crew sing the praises of their DJ, nothing new though done with verve (only on single-sided white label so far).

CAROL CAYNE ‘What My Love Can Bring (Fon Force Remix)’ (Syncopate 12SY 12)
Squalling and wailing German soul jitterer given a 115½-0bpm juddery remix in Sheffield, with rototom percussion and stuttery edits detracting a little from its natural momentum (more sinuously lurching 114¾-0bpm Summer mix and melodic 115¼bpm Dub too, which many prefer).

BLUE MODERNE ‘Do That Again (Club Version)’ (US Atlantic 0-86541)
Sandy Barber’s stand-out track from her Ish-produced recent LP, the sultrily soulful attractive roller now gets a far harder and slightly faster 0-100⅚-0bpm solidly thudding remix (dub too) that perhaps rambles on a bit inconclusively and loses the original’s more ethereal feel, although it is selling.

SUPER LOVER CEE & CASANOVA RUD ‘Girls I Got ‘Em Locked (LP Version)’ (US DNA International 0-66752)
Remorselessly fast talking rolling 97⅙bpm jogger with Joe Tex’s ‘I Gotcha’ scratched in the pauses for breath (inst/acappella flip).

4-PLAY ‘Got To Be Free (Club Mix)’ (Dance Wax Records DWR 101)
Rather toppy and thin “drumkit” driven simple speedy (0-)124bpm jack track with a monotonously intoned and stuttered repetitive title line, plus acid synthed thumping Backroom Mix, Front Room Mix and instrumental Drumz versions which may be preferable, as much more acidic (on a £5 import-style private UK pressing).

BONESBREAKS ‘Hard, Raw & Raunchy Beats For DJs – Volume 1’ (US Under World AP 134)
Frankie ‘Bones’ Mitchell-created basic, and basically instrumental, house rhythm tracks primarily for mixing DJs, with the jittering ‘Planet Rock’-ish 126½bpm ‘Bass Rock Beats’, jerkily wriggling piano plonked 121½-0bpm ‘Freestyle Got Trax’, nervy drumkit jittered 121½bpm ‘Break Goes On & On’, jacking synth chorded 120½bpm ‘Do You Know My House’ and lazily drummed 98½bpm ‘Jammin’ Breakdown’.

THE IT featuring Harry Dennis ‘Gallimaufry Gallery (Club Mix)’ (AnXious Records/Black Market Records BLMK 001, via PRT)
Larry ‘Mr Fingers’ Heard-created strange lazily muttered and urgently panted, “strings”-backed pitter pattering 111¾bpm weaving swayer from Chicago, not your usual concept of “house”, more like Prince if anything (dub/edit too).

C.A.S.H. ‘(…for the love of) Money (The Mango-Backo-Mix)’ (German BCM Records BC 12-2108-40)
Pink Floyd inspired chugging (0-)114½bpm volume pumper with sampled and stuttered dialogue lines concerning money, not bad although by now nothing new (dub flip).

BLOCK ‘Block’ (Vinyl Solution STORM 1, via 01-229 8010)
Wag DJ Jonathon Kane copies colleague Tim Simenon with a bass bombing 0-107⅓-0bpm rumbler that chugs tiredly along from ‘Set It Off’ to banjo hoedown without anything of any great note standing out (added rap on the flip).

GRAND GROOVE ‘Let’s Dance’ (Rham Records RS 8802, via Red Rhino/The Cartel)
Movie dialogue overdubbed and samples crammed scratching routine (0-)111½ bass bomber created in Manchester (and three mixes) by Gary Morris.

THE BIGHOUSE featuring Shampel “C” with DJ Mack ‘Get Off That Wall’ (German BCM Records BC 12-2117-40)
Minneapolis-recorded nervily jumping 119⅔bpm jitterer (in three mixes) with a volume pumping momentum plus muttering girls, sped up raps, stutters, scratches and samples (including “brothers and sisters…pump that bass”, one more time – get off!)

FLAIR ‘Chasin’ The Rain’ (Champion CHAMP 12-80)
Husky girl cooed and crooned swaying (0-)102½bpm jogger, reminiscent of Barbara Mason but not that special (dub flip).

Squeakily wailed worthy but dull 0-78-80½-81-80⅔-0bpm slowie, remixed by Loose Ends’ Steve & Carl, like Whitney Houston singing gospel.

GIPSY KINGS ‘Bamboléo’ (A1 Records 12A1 305, via PRT), described in Europe (where it’s one of the year’s hottest hits) as “Flamengo Wave”, rather than strict flamenco, these gipsies from Southern France strum and hoarsely shout a nosily infectious 117¾-0bpm jittery jumper that’s sure to be a wow especially at parties;

A RAUL ORELLANA MIX ‘Bolero Mix 3’ (Spanish Blanco Y Negro MX-LP-107), exciting bright 0-122-121⅓-121-0-113¼-111¾-107¾-0bpm megamix medley incorporating many more UK volume pumpers and Eurobeat Hi-NRG hits than the label lists, slowing for a finale based perhaps disconcertingly on Star Turn On 45 Pints ‘Pump Up The Bitter’ plus Code 61 ‘Drop The Deal’ and the ‘Full Metal Jacket’ soldiers’ chant, the gatefold sleeve containing a pop-up macho muscleman despite the appeal being much wider than that may suggest;

BROTHER BEYOND ‘The Harder I Try (Extended)’ (Parlophone 12R 6134), Stock Aitken Waterman-created breezily swinging 129¾bpm old Motown-style fingersnappin’ pulser, full of swimming harmonies and bright tinkles, and a sampled drum roll from the Isley Brothers ‘This Old Heart Of Mine’ (Pete lives up to his word by crediting drummer Benny Benjamin) while the label dedicates the whole thing to everyone at Motown “for the enjoyment and love they brought to us all”;

YELLO ‘The Race’ (Mercury YELLO 112), drums throbbed brassily brayed episodic 0-121½-0bpm jiggler with roaring stereo cars, jittery double beats, and bursts of fast gruff muttering reminiscent of Quantum Jump’s ‘The Lone Ranger’ (disjointed more melodic ‘Another Race’ flip), only on pre-release promo here although getting Hi-NRG attention on import for a while;

BLOW MONKEYS ‘This Is Your Life (Long)’ (RCA PT 42150), resonantly throbbing and jangling (0-)119¾bpm jiggly bounder eventually reaching some background moaning and finally a proper lead vocal by Dr Robert;

CYNDI LAUPER ‘What’s Going On (Club Version)’ (Epic CYNQT 3), Shep Pettibone-remixed tapping and thudding though still gently swaying 99⅔-0bpm treatment of Marvin Gaye’s classic, first out in 1986 but “discovered” in Ibiza last year by the Balearic boys and reissued now as flip to her new frantic Meat Loaf-like 168bpm ‘Hole In My Heart (All The Way To China)’;

RACHELLE CAPELLI ‘I Feel Good (House Mix)’ (Sire RC 1), James Brown’s currently reissued Sixties classic somewhat surprisingly given a girl squeaked thudding and bounding 117¾bpm Latin hip hop-come-house treatment that’s really quite effective, on promo test pressing only at the moment;

FIVE STAR ‘Rock My World (Extraterrestrial Mix)’ (Tent PT 42146), Leon Sylvers III-created juddery plaintively squeaked 111½bpm jitterer of no great note;

MICHAEL GRANT ‘Don’t Turn Your Back’ (Legacy Records 12LM 14), Nottingham-based Rick Astley clone with a confusingly started rattling and thudding (0-)118¾-118½bpm disjointed canterer;

AZTEC CAMERA ‘Working In A Goldmine’ (WEA YZ199T), mournfully swaying then surging jittery slow 86bpm smoocher with a wistfully soulful Sax Version instrumental flip;

BAPPI LAHIRI ‘Habiba’ (Hi-Hat Records HYT 3), and so the Asian onslaught continues, this being more Ofra Haza than Bhangra as an Indian fellah (evidently something of a star) wails away over a bashing jittery 0-113-0bpm electro beat, unlikely to mean much other than to Indian kids;

JOHNNY HATES JAZZ ‘Don’t Say It’s Love (12” Extended Remix)’ (Virgin VST 1081), bashing ponderous 115½bpm lurcher hindered rather than helped by its blue-eyed soul pretensions, it being held back by the formula;

LEGEAR ‘One Bad Apple’ (Saturday SDY 4), the Osmonds’ “rare groove” (?) in a straightforward bland 103⅔-0bpm pop treatment by a husky then squeaky chap, competent without improving on the original;

JACQUI BERNE ‘(No Doubt About It) Celebrate’ (Hi-Hat Records HYT 4), dull plodding (0-)113½bpm jiggly thudder eventually reaching some sweet wailing by this 18 year-old Mauritian girl, far from the “Balearic Beat” it’s being passed off as.

KYLIE MINOGUE ‘The Loco-Motion (The Kohaku Mix)’ (PWL Records PWLT 14), Stock Aitken Waterman’s remake of her Australian chart-topper has been rattlingly remixed in Hi-NRG style to sound much less like Little Eva’s classic original than does the perhaps better and beefier LP version (which hopefully will be the seven inch?), with the sweetly swaying 98bpm ‘I’ll Still Be Loving You’ as a good value flip;

MONICA REED ‘Out Of Control’ (Nightmare MARE 58), good soulfully gurgled 127½-0bpm breezy galloper with a long midway instrumental breakdown and wailingly driving climax;

CHER ‘Skin Deep (Extended Dance Mix)’ (US Geffen Records 0-20937), wriggly surging 126¾bpm canterer mixed by John Luongo with typical instrumental spaces, chainmail-clad Cher hollering as huskily as ever;

LISA CARTER ‘Doctor’s Orders’ (Parlophone 12NHS 1), yet another cantering 121½bpm Hi-NRG remake of Sunny’s 1974 hit, mixed by Pete Hammond but rather limp and flat in comparison with last week’s by Silk & Steele, although it’s getting some Scottish support.
