Out of a trickily nervy intro the jittery 101⅓bpm electronic beat seems to mellow when it reaches the Philadelphia soulster’s prodding hoarse Abrams/Vandross-ish voice, repetitive female chants building the intensity in bursts, the whole thing ending up very soulful indeed with surging gospel fervour (edit and Luther-ish (0-56¼-)112½bpm ‘Don’t Let Love‘ flip). With a buzz already, it’ll be big!

The same German label that originated the ‘Chicago Trax — Volume 1’ LP now has a 30 minute 12 inch containing three house medleys incorporating tracks by Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk, Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley, House People, Farm Boy, Raz, Mario Reyes, Femme Fion, Chip E, Fingers Inc and Mark Imperial, tightest and excitingly Hi-NRG being the Peter Vriends-created 0-124¾-126-127¼-126⅔-126¼-125½-124¾-0bpm Jackin’ Mix, ‘Mix Mac’ Meyers letting through one very sloppy link during his 119-121⅔-121¼-121½-121bpm Latin Mix but trucking tightly on his 121⅔-121½-121⅔bpm Dub Instrumental Version.

The hit import now (0-)107⅔bpm yelping, cooing and soaring repetitive wriggly soul groove is here flipped by the old tensely wriggling (0-)108½bpm ‘Settle Down (Extended Remix)’ and even older calmly strolling 104¾bpm ‘(You’re A) Good Girl (Special Mix)’ instead of his excellent sincere remake of Otis Redding’s ‘I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)’, which surely would have given it wider appeal?

A commercially pitched piercingly warbled jiggling jerky (0-)118¾bpm disco smacker (instrumental too), flipped here by her three years old shrilly nagged and gurgled repetitive loopily loping 114½bpm ‘Love This Way’, which you’re likely to still find familiar even if the title isn’t.

FULL CIRCLE ‘Boys’ Night Out’ (Dutch EMI America 24 07131)
Out in Holland ahead of the States (although reviewed off one of the original rare US pressings, delayed now while their name is reprinted as First Circle there), the guys’ soulfully sung debut is prodded by producer Randy Muller’s often typical rhythms through the Vandross-ish 112⅔bpm ‘In The Name Of Love’, strolling repetitive tense (0-)106⅔bpm ‘Miracle Worker’, urgently locomoting 121bpm ‘Dream You Came Back’, tenderly swaying 94bpm ‘Can’t Find A Love’, wriggly percolating pseudo-“live” 119⅔-0bpm ‘Get Off It’, Cameo-ish 115bpm title track, and their own hit 109⅓bpm ‘Working Up A Sweat’.

JUICY ‘Spread The Love’ LP (US CBS Associated Records BFZ 40451)
Self-contained brother and sister duo Jerry and Katreese Barnes (the latter sometimes sounding a bit Emotions-ish) do everything themselves apart from again being produced by Eumir Deodato, their gently tripping jazzily inflected 106⅚bpm ‘After Loving You’ here being nearly a minute longer than the seven inch, joined on a consistently pleasant set by the Yarbrough & Peoples-ish purposeful 97bpm ‘Midnight Fantasy’, tenderly tumbling 100⅙bpm ‘Serious’, jerkily swaying 105⅚bpm ‘Make You Mine’, slinkily pushing 0-85bpm ‘All Work No Play’, jauntily lurching 112bpm ‘Show And Tell’, Jerry-sung swaying 104bpm ‘Private Party’, and ‘Stuff Like That’-style 0-123bpm title track (featuring Chaka Khan).

BOY GEORGE ‘Everything I Own (Extended PW Botha Mix)’ (Virgin BOY 100-12)
Reviving the Bread oldie by way of Ken Boothe’s chart-topping 1974 version, this 87⅔bpm reggae treatment (with an 87⅓bpm “Dub” that’s actually the main vocal) sounds genuine enough to stand alone – and top the chart itself?

BARBARA ROY ‘Gonna Put Up A Fight’ (US RCA Victor 5943-1-RD)
Produced by Paul Simpson in somewhat early Eighties style, with supporting girls and a vibes break, Barbara soulfully wails and worries a nagging jiggly 109¼bpm lurching roller (in four mixes, plus the striding jittery 112¾bpm ‘Gotta See You Tonight’), likely to do something.

LIZ TORRES featuring EDWARD CROSBY ‘Can’t Get Enough’ (US State Street Records SSR 1002)
Edward just briefly prompts some scolding argument while otherwise it’s Liz who does all the wailing (in Spanish on one of the four mixes) in this bass burbled good loosely loping 119½bpm house swinger, with nice rolling momentum.

MG² ‘My House Is Bigger Than Your House’ (US Hot Mix 5 Inc HMF 101)
Created by Mickey ‘Mixin’ Oliver and Grant – MG Squared – this catchily chanted strong simple 124bpm house flier is in two mixes, as is the also 124bpm but different sounding drily striding ‘Twilight Zone’-quoting ‘Electric House’ jack track.

PATRICE RUSHEN ‘Watch Out’ (US Arista ADI-9563)
A welcome return for the long absent erstwhile hitmaker, still squeakily small-voiced on a spry but insubstantial 119⅓bpm bubbly loper in typical now dated style (and four mixes, Single Version at 119⅔bpm, Dub 0-119½bpm), pleasant more than grabbing.

SHEILA E ‘Sheila E’ LP (Paisley Park WX 63)
In a sleeve that deserves to be a gatefold, the glamorous one’s self-produced set has a sizzling side two with the storming James Brown-ish happy tunefully chugging 0-119⅔-120½-0bpm ‘Love On A Blue Train’, Janet Jackson-ish breezily trotting 120-119⅔-0bpm ‘Boy’s Club’, funkily smacking 0-115bpm ‘Hon E Man’, typical brassy zestful 121½-123bpm ‘Pride And The Passion’, jumpy Latin jazz 0-125½-125bpm ‘Soul Salsa’. Apart from the gorgeous sultry 76¼bpm ‘Hold Me’, side one is less ballsy with the sinuously tripping 103⅓bpm ‘Koo Koo’, jerkily spurting 117-0bpm ‘One Day’, lethargically surging 104⅔-0bpm ‘Wednesday Like A River’, Madonna-ish 82-164-0bpm ‘Faded Photographs’. Beware, all tracks practically segue together.

CHUCK STANLEY ‘The Finer Things In Life’ LP (Def Jam 450483 1)
Coinciding with the imports it’s out here so fast, the classy subdued soulster’s set has his title track 100bpm mournfully swaying single and its falsetto Philly Soul reviving 75¼bpm ‘Day By Day’ flip, plus the lovely 94bpm ‘Never Gonna Let You Go’, calmly jolting 96⅔bpm ‘Jammin’ To The Bells’, wailing 76bpm ‘My All And All’, rolling 103½bpm ‘Real Soon’, Nick Martinelli-ish 88⅓bpm ‘Love Toy’, striding 125½bpm ‘Burning Up’, Alyson Williams-duetted 73½bpm ‘Make You Mine Tonight’, slow pop 64¾bpm ‘When It All Falls Down’.

ROXANNE (FLY) SHANTÉ ‘Pay Back’ (US Pop Art PA-8508)
The distinct vulnerable yet tough sounding young lady’s typically self-preoccupied rap rides over some really def murkily textured 96⅔bpm sharp cutting (inst and beats too), flipped by the freakily backed exciting unrehearsed spontaneous 0-90-100-101-103-0-100bpm ‘Freestyle Live’ (censored and uncensored). Fresh!

JUST-ICE ‘Cold Gettin’ Dumb II’ (US Fresh Records FRE-9)
Completely recreated by producer Mantronik, with a new sharper offbeat-jolting 94bpm rhythm as well as fresh rhymes by the staccato toasting gold-toothed rapper, this remake is flipped for contrast by the album’s busier and boxier 98-0bpm original mix, a chinking cowbell beat being the only common bond (radio versions too).

NUMARX ‘Rhymes So Def’ (US Studio Records STU-1212)
Yet another break beat cutting 100bpm rap that (amongst others) gives the funky drummer some, the rapping guys obviously influenced by the Beasties without being so damn tough (in three mixes, the A-side Extended Dub best).

RISQUÉ RYTHUM TEAM ‘122 House’ (US Chicago Connection Records CC8602)
House Four-tracker that’s been about quite a while, with this good (0-)123bpm percussively throbbing “house your body” jack track driver and the useful “Twilight Zone” paraphrasing 123bpm ‘The Jacking Zone‘, plus the cornily chanted 123bpm ‘Risqué Rythum‘ and hits-sampling Hi-NRG 121⅔bpm ‘That’s The Beat‘.

SUGAR SUGAR ‘New Girl In Town’ (US 1800 Records E-1103)
Interesting extremely sinuous and sparse subtle pulsing 0-98bpm rap by two stereo-separated young girls, like a more sombre Salt-n-Pepa in three mixes).

SIMPLY RED ‘The Right Thing’ (WEA YZ103T)
Slightly convoluted but powerful good surging 107⅕-0bpm blue eyed soul with dated Instant Funk touches and a clapping break, deservedly getting disco attention.

CLAUDJA BARRY ‘Can’t You Feel My Heart Beat’ (US Epic 49-06718)
The Germany-based warbling beauty drops from Hi-NRG but stays “disco” for a gradually unfurling episodic long jiggly 104⅓-0bpm plodding chugger largely built up out of sly quotes lifted from recognisable recent hits (in three mixes).

NANCY MARTINEZ ‘Move Out’ (US Atlantic 0-86734)
M&M-mixed jaggedly wriggling noisy 114⅓bpm blonde “disco” bounder with buzzing rock guitar chords and Latin percussion in the current US “hot” style (inst flip).

ARETHA FRANKLIN ‘Jimmy Lee’ (Arista RIST 6)
Remixed though still low octane (0-)118bpm dated leaping swinger cribbed from Natalie Cole’s 1975 hit ‘This Will Be’, with a harder dub and the gentle 90bpm ‘An Angel Cries‘.

ROSIE GAINES ‘Crazy’ (US Epic 34-06613)
Timelessly soulful shuffling and swirling 85bpm semi-slowie on seven inch (most pressings proving rather crackly).

LIVING PROOF ‘Hold On To Your Dreams’ (US Fantasy D-278)
Detroit-recorded syrupy 89-0bpm chorus backed guy-sung revival of a bland mid-Seventies style message ballad whose origins I can’t remember although it sounds old (despite a “kids, say no to drugs” rap finale), sure to delight some, with an equally dated cantering soul 113½bpm ‘You Can Make It If You Try‘ flip. Not an era I found memorable.

JULES ‘You Mean Nothing To Me’ (5th Avenue Records & Tapes FIF 121, via Supreme)
Princess-style nosily wailed rolling 103bpm judderer (dub/edit flip), by a girl despite the masculine name.

MAHOGANY ‘Masterpiece Of Love’ (US Critique CR8529)
Wailing girls with a huskier leader squall and ramble untidily over a jiggly (0-)113½bpm bassline adapted from Madonna (in three mixes).

SANDRA CROSS ‘Tied Up’ (Craze Faze Records CF 001, via Ariwa)
Sweetly squeaked and cooed gently bubbling 116¼bpm wriggly swayer with an appealing old fashioned vocal lilt reminiscent of early Motown, the beat being badly defined though the whole effect is very attractive (strange dubwise flip).

PUBLIC ENEMY ‘Timebomb’ (US Def jam 44-06719)
Angrily worded 0-98bpm remorseless rap, abruptly ending and short, in fact flip of the wordily introed and equally remorseless droning 0-101bpm ‘Public Enemy # 1’ (in three mixes).

SCORPIO ‘(Go Michael) Air Jordan’ (US Criminal Records CRIM 00008)
Jazzy Jay scratches James Brown and squiggles away throughout this Arthur Baker-produced 0-105bpm declamatory rap (in five mixes), not that special in its own right.

HELENA ‘Be Soft With Me Tonight’ (Arista RIST 5)
Session singer turned solo hopeful, Helena Springs (eternal?) finally settles into a tempo that’ll encourage rather than scare off the dance crowd, a lovely (0-)93bpm swaying lush jogger with vocal mannerisms reminiscent of early Sixties Bacharach and David productions (Lou Johnson in particular), and a zany plunking guitar break.

BIG AUDIO DYNAMITE ‘Hollywood Boulevard (Dub Mix)’ (CBS BAADT2)
Somewhat house-ish percussively pattering 114bpm instrumental (plus its pop accented vocal club mix) on the flip of ‘V Thirteen‘, possibly useful in a mix.

J M O ‘Jack Is The Message’ (US In The House Records CHI 3122)
On a Florida label yet evidently produced in Chicago, this jerky 115½-116-115½-0bpm house cash-in has fragmentary samples of dog barks, Tarzan yells, the word “jack” and all too brief nice sax (in three mixes), not quite real.

KAJAMMIN ‘It Ain’t Over (‘Till It’s Over)’ (US Macola Record Co MRC-0979)
Bright but derivative snappily cantering 122bpm copy of all the routine clichés form “major label funk” (in four mixes).

C AUGUST CHARLES ‘Get Up Get With It’ (Champion CHAMP 12-32)
Picked up from Profile, fairly undistinguished 116½bpm wriggly shuffler finally reaching a repeated sharp-voiced Instant Funk-ish “get with it stay in it gotta follow that dream” mantra break (edit/acappella flip).

  1. As James correctly predicts a Number One on the pop chart for “Everything I Own”, Boy George buys his first pair of decks. He has DJ-ed before, at Phillip Salon’s Planets in 1981, but he won’t establish himself as a professional club DJ until the 1990s.

    The “remorseless” Public Enemy (as James dubs them twice!) make their first appearance this week, and it’s interesting to discover that the first track of theirs to gain traction on UK dance floors was “Timebomb”, which I’d all but forgotten about.

I think that’s the first ever mention for the legendary and long running Bournemouth Weekender which I was going to around this period (Radio Haddock was the pirate station they used tom set up IIRC) and at which sometime in the next year or so I saw my first acid house bandanna type people (in retrospect I think they must have been from Shoom but I just thought what’s all that about at the time?) The actual weekend went back into what were the mists of time as far as my crowd were concerned – I believe a pre-fame Spandau Ballet attended before our era.

    I’m really surprised about JH’s comment about the North East being THE hotbed of house at this time – if there was one region that I’m surprised would not be leading the way in house or any form of dance music it would be the North East. I mean in the 1970s they weren’t even into northern soul there – I believe I read once that it was the only place in Britain aside from London and the SE and Liverpool that weren’t. As far as this interest in house – what happened?
