Really, that’s the name on the label! Their speedily snicking 124¼bpm jack track kicks off with terrifying rippling and romping piano, the same player then pumping an organ before “jack your body” gets sampled and things keep getting crazier — very exciting (the same track repeats as flip).

ULTRA MAGNETIC MC’s ‘Traveling At The Speed Of Thought’ (US Next Plateau NP5008)
Excellent singsong chanting and scratching 111bpm jaunty sparse rap which keeps cutting the Kingsmen’s ‘Louie Louie’ into its ‘Honky Tonk Woman’-type tempo, great fun and sure to be big (dub too, plus the disjointed jittery 0- 104⅓-0bpm ‘MC’s Ultra (Part II)‘ and break beat-cutting short 106⅓bpm ‘B-Boy Bonus Break’).

WHISPERS ‘Rock Steady’ (US Solar V-71153)
A much used title over the years, although here a new song, this jauntily trotting 116⅓bpm singalong swayer is vintage Whispers, with clipped choruses and a lean arrangement so immediately recognisable as their timeless style that, cleaner recording apart, it sounds little different from their revived oldies (inst flip, and 1984’s lovely Philly-ish 66¼bpm ‘Are You Going My Way’).

KINKINA ‘Jungle Fever’ (Champion CHAMP 12-35)
Originated by the Chakachas in the early Seventies, this early Eighties update of the panting and groaning ecstatic throbber is still here in 99⅔bpm untampered state but as A-side has a Phil Harding & Pete Waterman-created new 100bpm Megamix, although bigger news is an also 100bpm ‘Skratch Fever’ version by DJ StreetsAhead, cutting “fresh” and stuff all through it.

ELEANORE MILLS ‘Mr Right’ (Debut DEBTX 3020)
Friskily bubbling 117-116½-116-116½bpm bounder with honking sax and wriggly Latin rhythms in a New York fusion of Miami and Chicago influences (116½-116-116½bpm inst, 117bpm bonus, 0-116½bpm radio mixes too), hot on import.

TURNTABLE TERROR TRAX, VOL.2 ‘Let’s Begin’ (US Bassment Records BM-0060)
Nothing other than a remake of Hamilton Bohannon’s ‘Let’s Start The Dance’, this shimmys, chatters and bounds along at 121¾bpm much more cleanly than the original and is a killer rhythm track (with a slow-starting ‘Stephen’s Overture‘ version too), flipped by the less dynamically throbbing instrumental 118bpm ‘In The Bass‘.

PROFESSOR FUNK & THE HOUSE BROTHERS ‘Work Your Body Rap’ (US Underground UN 114)
As previously warned, here’s the rap version of ‘Jack Your Body’, produced by Rocky Jones and Joe Smooth with gruffly talking ‘Fessor Funk backed by the familiar 121¾bpm bass line plus many new ingredients so that it stands as something fresh in its own right (dub/inst flip).

THE HOUSE MASTER BOYZ AND THE RUDE BOY OF HOUSE ‘House Nation’ (Magnetic Dance MAGDT 1)
Farley mixes beats behind Sweet D’s keyboards on a basic title line-stuttered fast 123-123½-123⅔-123½-123¾-123͕⅓-123⅔ jack track (in three mixes), hot for ages on import.

SWEET HEAT ‘This Is The Night’ (US 5 Newark MLK1)
Eventually reaching the main beat after a long teasing intro, this girls sung old fashioned uncluttered 114¾bpm loping strider has sample insistent power (dub flip), and could have come out at any time in the last eight years.

R.J.’s LATEST ARRIVAL ‘Rhythm Method’ (US Manhattan V-56048)
“I need two tickets for RJ’s Latest Arrival” – “for why?” – “Cuz they rock the house!” … and whoompf, the tightly lurching 115½bpm girl souled vigorous jagged funker kicks off in post-purple style but with plenty smarts enough of its own (in four mixes).

PEGGI BLU ‘Blu Blowin’’ LP (US Capitol ST-12550)
Stunningly soulful Peggi – whose family relationship to Meli’sa Morgan now appears unproven – must obviously have had her vocal training in church as every track wails with sanctified fervour by the end, no matter how modishly the various producers (Nick Martinelli among them) may have started it. There’s just no holding her down on rhythmically Janet-ish lurching 119⅔bpm ‘Mesmorize Me’, attractive lsleys-penned 83¾bpm ‘Once Had Your Love (And I Can’t Let Go)‘, smoothly jittering 107bpm ‘Two Can Play At That Game‘, Bert Robinson-duetted gospel-ish 58⅓bpm ‘All The Way With You’, joyously romping 61-122bpm ‘Over And Over’, datedly cantering 113¼bpm ‘Love’s Just A Mystery’, sporadically spurting 0-45/90bpm ‘All And All’, simple 72bpm ‘Feels Good To Me’, dead slow 0-21/42-0bpm ‘I Believe In You’, and her 12 inched sophisticated squalling jiggly offbeat 91⅙bpm ‘Tender Moments‘.

TASHAN ‘Thank You Father’ (Def Jam 650779 6)
Pleasant soulfully crooned and moaned 105⅓bpm drifting sanctified swayer, sorta Marvin Gaye meets Leo’s Sunshipp with Frankie Beverly on the side, flipped by the Alyson Williams-duetted soulfully doodling and canoodling 79bpm ‘Love Is…‘ and (for what seems the umpteenth time on 12 inch) 85½bpm ‘Got The Right Attitude‘. His album remains the best buy, especially as this doesn’t even include his US remix of ‘Read My Mind’.

BOBBY McCLURE ‘It Feels So Good (To Be Back Home)’ Debut DEBT X 3021)
Michael Wycoff-penned wailing chunkily tossing 104½bpm nagger about which I raved months ago – it remains big in Fatback-orientated black clubs – flipped (edit too) by this Sixties soul veteran’s swaying 99½bpm modern revival of Cash McCall’s ‘You Never Miss Your Water‘.

THE MICROPHONE PRINCE ‘Who’s The Captain? (I Wonder, Wonder Who)’ (Music Of Life Records NOTE 2, via Pinnacle)
Terrifically catchy 91½bpm rap combination of the Monotones’ 1958 hit ‘Book Of Love’ with a vaudevillian comedy routine that I now see is credited to Abbot And Costello (Who is the name of the captain – ie: Captain Who – causing great confusion!), flipped (edit too) by the crudely indelicate 0-94bpm ‘Yvonne & Corry‘.

HINDSIGHT ‘Heaven’s Just A Breath Away (The Bliss Mix)’ (Circa Records YRTPR 3)
This romantically pitched gentle giggly 105½bpm swaying jogger has been on pre-release flipped by Michael Brauer’s unrecognisably stark jittery 104⅚bpm Paradise Lost dub version, but commercial copies will also be twin-packed with ‘Small Change (Corn Xchange Mix)’ and include Brauer’s retitled ‘Heaven Can Wait’ Club Mix.

NUMARX ‘Rhymes So Def’ (Bluebird BRT 39)
Beasties-inspired 100bpm beat-cutting rap that gives the funky drummer some (amongst others), the A-side Extended Dub being best of three mixes.

JUNGLE WONZ ‘Time Marches On’ (US Trax Records TX 135)
Marshall Jefferson-created soft synth washed gently pulsing 117⅓-116½-115⅔-0bpm hi-hat hisser with piano joining in halfway, once again overlaid by simplistic muttered and chanted philosophising (much quieter thumming 119⅓-118½-117⅔-0bpm Club flip).

ONE WAY ‘You Better Quit’ (MCA Records MCAT 1142)
Louil Silas Jr-remixed sassy girl wailed nagging 112⅙bpm strutter with some catchy unusual squiggly synth noises during the breaks (flipped on promo by the older soulful 104bpm ‘Don’t Think About It‘).

MIKE GEE ‘Mike Gee’s Limit’ (US Pow Wow PW 423)
Great dynamically jumping 99¾bpm vigorous remake of Octavia’s ‘2 The Limit’ with the beefily bounding go go beat dominating Mike’s buried rap inserts (inst/dub flip).

CHUCK STANLEY ‘Day By Day’ (Def Jam 650499 6)
The Continental Four’s 1971 Philly Soul slowie affectionately revived in Delfonics-style strangulated stratospheric wailing falsetto as 74¾bpm A-side, flipped by the more modern gruffly nagging juddery swaying 99½bpm ‘The Finer Things In Life‘, plus here the Alyson Williams-duetted convoluted 73½/ 36¾bpm ‘Make You Mine Tonight‘.

WET SILK ‘Jack’s House Trax’ (US Latrax T/T 1988)
No doubt inspired by their UK visits, Lamar Thomas & Judy Taylor (plus Patrick Adams) have gone house, producing a nursery rhyming simple 120½bpm thudding bounder with a jungle beat that mixes well with Cultural Vibe ‘Power’ (edit flip).

T. JAM ‘Jacko’ (Hot Melt 12TC009, via Pinnacle)
T.C. Curtis-created jittery 103bpm staccato tripper about visitors from outer space who’ve come to learn the latest funky dance moves – surprisingly, with lyrics as silly as this, it’s not otherwise at all gimmicky (starker Club Mix dub flip).

GALLIFRE ‘Chicago Boogie Rhythm Tracks’ (US Danica Records DAN-1608)
Both 122bpm sides start with separately banded beats flowing straight into the “eye-cued” main tracks, side one’s ‘117‘ being a bass synth buzzed instrumental house skitterer that so far isn’t as hot as side two’s much simpler smooth tapping quite attractive “house rhythm”-repeating ‘Night Beats’ jack track (plus some basic 121½bpm beats called ‘Faces’).

T-COY ‘Carino’ (deConstruction Records M622)
Home grown 0- 114⅓bpm house instrumental built perhaps too tightly over the cymbal schlurping ‘Set It Off’ beat with jazzy piano and percussive breaks, good and clever though more flow would have helped.

ULYSSES ‘Magic Wand’ (US Sensations Records CS-45-02)
Paul Scott produces moaning and hollering Ulysses Whetstone on a skittery spurting house bounder in four mixes, all at 120bpm and very reminiscent of Darryl Pandy (especially on Farm Boy’s ‘Move’).

NANETTE FRANK ‘Can’t Be Your Part-Time Lover’ (Total Control Records 12TOCO 12)
Pleasant plaintively squalling Minnie Riperton-ish 70bpm soul smoocher from Chicago, showing there’s more to the Windy City than house in 1987 (sax inst/edit flip).

NU ROMANCE CREW ‘Tonight’ (EMI America 12EA 233)
James Mtume’s 15-year-old boy Fa Mtume is in this young New Jersey trio, so naturally it’s Dad who created their Ready For The World-style hesitantly jolting sparse slow 0-77⅔bpm smoocher (in four mixes).

ORAN ‘JUICE’ JONES ‘1.2.1’ (Def Jam 650780 6)
Spikily snapping mechanical beats spoil what could have been an otherwise nicely arranged squeaky falsetto 105⅙bpm swayer, flipped by the 1962 vintage Miracles-like (0-)68¼bpm ‘Here I Go Again‘ and jagged 93bpm ‘Curiosity (Dub)’.

MILLIE JACKSON ‘Love Is A Dangerous Game’ (Jive JIVET 135)
Sultry swaying 80½-0bpm soul jogger throatily as usual about the dangers of slippin’ around (inst/edit too, plus her recent 94⅔bpm ‘Hot! Wild! Unrestricted! Crazy Love’).

WELL RED ‘Honey’ (Virgin VSD 943-12 DJ)
Striding chugger twin-packed in three versions, the brassy slightly pop-accented 111¾bpm vocal 2 Skin Mix Edit, and – already promoed as by Double-U-R – the much sparser preferable 112½bpm 8.08 Mix and 112¼bpm Bass Drum Head Mix dub (plus the datedly disjointed 107⅓bpm ‘Saturday’). They seem unsure of their market.

SHANNON ‘Dancin’’ (Club JABX 50)
Raul Rodriguez-remixed tumbling and thundering untidy 116bpm jitterer typical of America’s new “disco” (dub flip, plus the rhythmically ambiguous 67⅛/134¼bpm ‘Faces In The Crowd’).

YELLOW HOUSE ‘Jack My Body’ (US Dance Mania Records DM 005)
“Beated by Farley”, this cymbal sizzled simple throbbing repetitive 125bpm house instrumental has no frills and is mainly for mixers (in three Body Mixes, a digital title line jacking the flip’s two).

RICK & LISA ‘When You Gonna’ (RCA PT 41286)
Mel & Kim-copying 119͕⅔bpm pop disco duet with all the clichés in four mixes, moaning Rick sounding more authentic than shrill Lisa.

SUGAR STYLE ‘909 “The Beat Is Mine”‘ (Nine O Nine NINE 1)
Very simple vocodered and synthed throbbing and wriggling 0-123½-0bpm homegrown house, slickly effective (in two mixes).

ZUICE ‘Bless Your Lucky Stars’ (Mercury MERX 244)
