TRISTAN BOLITHO now mixes it up at Bristol’s brand new Parkside Club, in Bath Road’s Amos Court, and also has a little featurette on BBC Radio Bristol’s ‘Close Up’ programme, relaying the area’s club news. For this, he’d like to hear about any mixing and scratching-type gigs, which he’ll plug (write to him at ‘Close Up’, BBC Radio Bristol, PO Box 194, Bristol). The station is also running a West Of England mixing and rapping contest on June 11, details to follow.

My original faith in (the obviously included 110⅕bpm) ‘Serious‘ seems at least to have been justified, powerfully wailing Donna being even more soulful on the impassioned cool rolling 116⅕bpm ‘Satisfied’ (now on import 12 inch too), bubbling (0-)113⅕bpm ‘Sweet Somebody‘, Howard Johnson-duetted drifting 94bpm ‘Perfect Timing‘, tortuous 70bpm ‘Daydreams‘, trotting 122bpm ‘Another Affair‘, jerky 108⅕bpm ‘Bit By Bit’, murky 109½bpm ‘Wild Nights’, and her jolting 116⅕bpm ‘Bad Love’ B-side.

THE WHISPERS ‘Rock Steady’ (MCA Records MCAT 1152)
Excellent typical catchily trotting 116⅓bpm singalong swayer with clipped choruses in vintage style (instrumental flip, plus 1984’s lovely Philly-style 66¼bpm ‘Are You Going My Way‘). A smash!

JAZZY JEFF & FRESH PRINCE ‘A Touch Of Jazz’ (Champion CHAMP 12-47)
As well as their LP’s original jazz-funk scratch medley, there are three dynamite much re-scratched and extended remixes, at 103⅓bpm here apart from the 103⅙ Collapsed In The Street Mix, which is the most altered of all with added rap. The shape of things to come?

HERB ALPERT ‘Diamonds (Dance Mix)’ (Breakout USAT 605)
Janet Jackson and Lisa Keith actually supply a full lead vocal to another very Janet-styled Jam & Lewis-created jittery driving 111¼-0bpm emphatically lurching jolter, OK but a bit formularised and pedestrian, sharply remixed by Steve Hodge (inst too, plus a more open 111¾-0bpm Edit, and the RAH Band-ish drifting 100bpm ‘Rocket To The Moon‘). A hit, regardless.

JOYCE SIMS ‘Lifetime Love’ (US Sleeping Bag Records SLX-24)
Already promoed by London in the four (here differently subtitled) main mixes but not due commercially until June 1, this Mantronik-produced plaintively small voiced haunting strange 107½bpm monotonous ticking jitterer has six mixes Stateside — divided as ‘Hard’ and ‘Soft’ whereas here they’re reversed as ‘Def and ‘Jazzy’ —the overall concept probably being too subtle for massive crossover penetration, although our mob will love it.

FREEEZ ‘Southern Freeez 87’ (Total Control Records 12TOCO 14)
As detailed last week, this slower steady 120-0bpm remake by all the original members apart from John Rocca of their 1981 smash slinky bounder, cool girl-sung and now usefully similar to Sybil, is flipped (edit too) by an Avenger Mix in which label owner Steve Walsh echoingly prompts some “freeze” pauses in his inimitable Soul Night Out style —although the handling of this good idea seems clumsy and surprisingly lacks impact.

HOTLINE ‘Rock This House’ (Rhythm King LEFT 10T)
Created by two guys from Huddersfield although sounding so like DSM’s ‘Warrior Groove’ that I had to check with Dancin’ Danny D to confirm he had no involvement, this bassily resonant hypnotic 114½bpm burbling groove (strongest in its instrumental flip) is another fascinating fusion of ‘Twilight’ and ‘Set It Off’.

DAVID SANBORN ‘Chicago Song’ (US Warner Bros 0-20676)
The saxist’s bluesily jogging catchy instrumental has been remixed in a tighter 104bpm format by its writer/producer, Marcus Miller, making powerful sneakily nagging jazz-funk that could even cross over here.

LENNY D & TOMMY MUSTO ‘Everything Bamboo’ (Magnetic Dance MAGDT 2)
Oddly retitled for Britain, this is that enigmatic happily galloping 119⅔-119⅓-0bpm import house hit most commonly known as “Bam Boo”, one of the good ones (dub flip).

FARLEY ‘JACKMASTER’ FUNK & THE SHY BOYZ ‘U Ain’t Really House’ (US House Records HU 25)
Instrumental in the B-side’s two more truly house mixes or (acappella too) sung as a proper song with quite endearingly discordant harmonies, this easily loping 119⅗bpm adaptation of Status Four’s ‘You Ain’t Really Down’ is catchily tuneful with a simple nagging xylophone riff.

ALEX CHARLES ‘Come On Over’ (New York Records ACT 1, via Jet Star)
The Ladies Choice leader still sounds to be in a singalong staccato group setting as he anxiously pleads over an intriguingly different very densely bumping jerky 85½bpm bass synth beat that’s bouncily go go-ish despite its deceptively slow BPM (brighter 112¾bpm ‘The World‘ flip). Rather good.

T.C. CURTIS ‘Love Got Me On A Merry-Go-Round’ (Hot Melt 12TCO11)
With some ‘Single Life’ spaghetti whistles and role-playing Greg Edwards’ soothingly spoken advice, TC’s typical nervily pent-up vocal jumps and worries away through repetitive chants and a jittery 0- 103⅔bpm go go beat (dub and smoother striding 115½bpm ‘Reunited‘ flip).

LA LA ‘(If You) Love Me Just A Little’ (US Arista AD 1-9569)
La La (La Forrest) Cope, apparently a child prodigy playing piano at Carnegie Hall aged only nine, has more recently been known as a writer/producer/backing singer associated with Hush Productions yet she makes her solo debut produced and accompanied by Full Force on this jerkily chugging spiky fast 119¾-0bpm Janet Jackson-ish lurcher (in four mixes).

LANIER & CO. ‘Dancing In The Night’ (US Waylo 12-3011)
Produced by Memphis veteran Willie Mitchell, the soulful crooner is not quite so obviously Jerry Butler-toned on this delightful bubbly skipping 114⅔bpm timeless mellow canterer (dub flip). From the same source though out here and consistently ticking over for the last two months now, I never did get around to reviewing the truly Jerry Butler-like lovely mournfully swaying 105⅓-101⅔-102-101⅓-101⅔-101-101⅔-99⅔bpm ‘I Don’t Know (What To Do About You)’ (Threeway Records WAY102T), mainly because from its rapidly decelerating Jr Walker-ish intro I knew it would take too long to BPM!

HARVEY SCALES ‘I Can Do Bad By Myself’ (US TTED TDE-3026)
[Ed: artist is actually Jesse James]
Sixties veteran Harvey Scales is the main producer/arranger/writer so I’ve credited him as artiste too, as in fact confusingly none is listed, on this superb rolling 80½bpm dated gruff soul slowie from Washington DC (vocal dub/inst flip), rather like Betty Wright’s ‘Pain’. One thing the label does get right is the slogan, “Look out … soul is back!”

VESTA WILLIAMS ‘Suddenly It’s Magic’ (Breakout USAT 603)
Sure to have heavy appeal for female demographics, this inspirational 0-36½-73bpm strong slow radio ballad from the ‘Soul Man’ soundtrack is coupled for the soul crowd with the gently rolling Chaka-ish 104⅓bpm ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ and percussively disjointed old 111½bpm ‘Don’t Blow A Good Thing (Remix)’

BOBBY BROWN ‘Girl Next Door’ (MCA Records MCAT 1153)
Larry Blackmon-produced Cameo-ish lurching 102⅔bpm jittery soul wriggler, remixed by Dave O Ogrin in four versions.

MIKE FRANCIS ‘Features Of Love’ (Club JABX 52)
This Italian’s huskily romantic jogging gentle swayer first showed up briefly last year flipped by the hotter and still hard to find ‘Lovely Day‘. Here however the A-side’s orchestrally sandwiched (0-) 100½(-0)bpm preferable lush album version is flipped by the more tightly ticking 100bpm Club Mix (and the slushy 40/80bpm ‘Upside Down‘, reminiscent of ‘Friends’ —which he wrote for Amii Stewart).

LACHANDRA ‘Shy Girl’ (Syncopate 12SY2)
18-year-old dance-trained model Lachandra Aarons is produced by Lola and Bob Blank just as idiosyncratically as ‘Wax The Van’ on a rambling sassy girlish jittery 100½bpm go go roller, full of influences (in three mixes).

AL JARREAU ‘Tell Me What I Gotta Do’ (WEA U8523TX)
Prior to ‘Moonlighting’, this John Luongo-remixed rambling 90⅚bpm jiggly jogger with typical scat was marketed as a twin-pack, but now reissued (still with the roaring brassily building old 97⅔-99-98⅔-99-100⅔-101 bpm ‘Roof Garden‘) it’s selling solely for the flip’s added brand new Les Adams Megamix of ‘Mornin’ (92⅙)TeII Me What I Gotta Do (92⅔)/Pleasure (99)/Easy (114)/Step By Step (112⅔bpm)’.

RUBY TURNER ‘I’m In Love’ (Jive RTS T 2)
Reissued classy (0-)97½bpm soul swayer, familiar already though possibly too classy for her pop fans (inst, and steadily weaving lightly jittery 103¾bpm ‘The Story Of A Man And A Woman‘ flip).

KREEM ‘Triangle Of Love’ (US KMS 007)
Primarily of interest to beat freaks, this apparently Missouri-recorded 124½bpm jack track rhythm frantically rambles through scraps of female vocal and abruptly disjointed breaks (in three mixes), quirkily exciting.

DENISE MOTTO ‘Tell Jack (Jack The House)’ (US Play House Records PHR-416)
Possibly even more Hi-NRG than ‘IMNXTC’, this emptily frantic 124½bpm lack track skitterer (in four mixes) has some knowingly muttered double entendres and a digitally stuttered “jack” subtitle.

PAUL JOHNSON ‘Half A World Away’ (CBS PJOHN T2)
Sweetly souled soaring sincere dead slow 0-27½/55-0bpm smoocher, nice but more for radio than floors (in two versions, plus the gently attractive 46½/93-0bpm ‘Where Can You Be?‘).

TWO NATIONS ‘That’s The Way It Feels’ (10 Records TENT 168)
Pete Wingfield-produced pleasantly haunting 84⅓bpm blue-eyed soul slowie, not that spectacular although proving a bit of a grower following repeated Radio London plays.

TUCCEDO ‘To Touch You’ (Chart Sounds CSTUC/01, Jet Star)
Presumably pronounced “Tuxedo”, the Tubbs co-produced Jean Paul Whyte-led London trio’s semi-falsetto yearning tender 79bpm drifting slow swayer has an Alexander O’Neal atmosphere (inst flip). A good try, more than toe-curling.

THREE WISE MEN ‘Refresh Yourself’ (Rhythm King LEFT 7T)
South London accented jumpy jiggly 101⅔bpm go go-Ish sparse rap ‘n’ cut climaxing with Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” (freakier flipside dubs), much better than their last effort.

BECKIE BELL ‘Let Me Know’ (Carrere CART 410)
Jacques Morali-produced vigorously striding simple 115¾ breezy chugger with a Euro lilt but a beefy beat (inst flip).

STARPOINT ‘He Wants My Body’ (Elektra EKR55T)
Pop-pitched shrill girl squawked jerkily disjointed (0-)116⅖-116⅕-116⅖-116⅕bpm jittery lurcher with Madonna-ish muttering and a rock guitar break, flipped here by the far classier soulfully warbled shuffling 116⅔bpm ‘Satisfy Me Lover‘ and easily swinging 114¾bpm ‘It’s All Yours’, from 1984.

CLAUDJA BARRY ‘Can’t You Feel My Heart Beat’ (Epic 650445 6)
The Germany-based warbling beauty’s gradually unfurling episodic long jiggly 104⅓-0bpm plodding chugger has been slowly catching on as people realise that it slyly quotes from other people’s recent hits (in three mixes).

CINDY VALENTINE ‘In Your Midnight Hour’ (Urban URBX 3)
Surprisingly un-hip for the new label, this whispered then plaintively chanted jittery percussive 102⅓bpm chugger is like a fusion of Gwen Guthrie (or now Living In A Box) rhythm with Madonna vocal (in three mixes, plus the even more Madonna-ish 116¾bpm ‘Work It Out‘).
