November 19, 1988: Prestatyn Soul Weekend 4, Keith Sweat, Turntable Orchestra, Cherrelle, Marshall Jefferson presents Truth, Royal House

BEATS & PIECES

NEW ALBUMS I regretfully had neither the time nor space to review this week include the ‘Hearsay’ remixing Alexander O’Neal ‘All Mixed Up’ (Tabu), his ‘My Gift To You’ Christmas album not being out here until next month; Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis-created surprisingly soulful Pia (Zadora) ‘When The Lights Go Out’ (Epic); likewise surprisingly good Sheena Easton ‘The Lover In Me’ (US MCA Records); break beats based The 45 King ‘Master Of The Game’ (US Tuff City); subdued rapping Sweet Tee ‘It’s Tee Time’ (US Profile); sweetly squeaked sultry Angela Bofill ‘Intuition’ (Capitol); rare grooves compiling Various Artists ‘Boogie Tunes 2‘ (Graphic Records) … 12 inch imports similarly include the nervy twittering Rhythim Is Rhythm ‘It Is What It Is (Majestic Mix)‘ (US Transmat), flipped by two acid newies; sampling, scratching and shouting Black, Rock and Ron ‘Black, Rock and Ron‘ (US Popular); James Brown/Brothers Johnson/Masters At Work/Kraze/etc sampling Only In The Dark ‘Make Noise‘ (US Profile); Criminal Element Orchestra/T La Rock & Jazzy Jay/etc sampling Todd Terry-type Bad Boy Orchestra ‘Hip Hop Salsa‘ (US Smokin’); Gaz ‘Sing Sing’-based rapping Ms. Melodie ‘To Sing All Night‘ (US Jive); Troggs adapting drily rapped Tone-Loc ‘Wild Thing‘ (US Delicious Vinyl), with a better hoarsely sinuous ‘Loc’ed After Dark‘ flip … Reese & Santonio’s old ‘Back To The Beat’ (with ‘The Sound’)’ coupling, the deadpan girl muttered title line repeating (0-)122bpm ‘Rock To The Beat’ thumper has apparently become something of a Belgian disco anthem in a local “new beat” cover version, and so is due to be added to commercial pressings of their current ‘Truth Of Self Evidence’ too … Belgian new beat may be the hot hype at the moment but even so, the Balearic Electra ‘Jibaro’ is being reissued this week in its various mixes … ‘Ford Trax‘ is the title of Baby Ford’s new excellent instrumental B-side — and also of a nine-track 12 inch twin-pack due out next month … K-9 Posse rap group member Vernon Lynch seems to be the brother of Eddie Murphy! … ffrr rather than Supreme Records have picked up the Ultramagnetic MC’s LP, plus Sterling Void’s ‘Runaway Girl’ … Original Concept’s ‘Straight From The Basement Of Kooley High!’ LP is now out here (Def Jam 462978 1), as finally is EPMD’s ‘Strictly Business’ LP (Sleeping Bag Records SBUK LP 1) … Carolyn Martin is opening a New York office and US branch of the Disco Mix Club … Def Jam are launching in the US a new Black Gold label for soul rather than rap releases, switching over to it Oran ‘Juice’ Jones, Tashan, Chuck Stanley and Alyson Williams, and singing veteran group Blue Magic … Jeff Thomas was persuaded to stay full time at Swansea’s Martha’s Vineyard, where he has so radically altered the Mon/Wed-Fri/Saturday night policy to solidly black music that now anyone turning out in conventionally “smart” dress is actually refused admission (there being plenty of other clubs locally all vying for that market) — also, he’s started rap/acid/deep house Sundays at Neath’s brand new First Base American bar and diner … Norman Cook cuts up Worthing’s Sterns this Thursday (17) … Plymouth Sound’s soul presenter Chris Dinnis and Bob Smith hold a rare groove/classic soul/funk/jazz ‘Humdinger 3’ at Boxes on Exeter Quay next Wednesday (23), when Eon Irving starts a weekly garage/funk ‘Inside America’ night at Mayfair’s Prohibition in Hanover Street … ‘Hype House’ every Thursday at Bradford’s The Palace has house/funk/soul/rap/rare groove with the “beats per minute posse”, DJ Cool Cutz, DJ Vibe Alive, Mixmaster Eazy and Master JMP, while Cool Cutz and Eazy also spin acid and hard hip hop on two levels in the Dance Zone at the nearby Jokers every Fri/Saturday … Prestatyn’s mayor came to check out the LiveWire weekender and nobody believed who he was to begin with — he’s a 28-year-old biker! … Tom Astor was amongst the party I took to Prestatyn — he owns South London’s Orinoco Studio, at which Enya recorded ‘Orinoco Flow’ … Keith Sweat (who reputedly cost £30,000 for his Prestatyn show) was so paranoid that when a fan penetrated his bus to say hello, Keith bleated to security “He could have shot me!” — which says more about America than anything else … Pete Tong closed down Saturday night’s music at Prestatyn by playing the Gipsy Kings’ terrific ‘Bamboleo‘, about which I raved when it was first released, and which if reserviced could yet become a Christmas smash … Breakout’s main man Mike Sefton took paternity leave two weeks ago — he’s the proud dad of a baby daughter … Taboo’s ‘No. 6‘, the recently reviewed revamp of TV’s ‘The Prisoner’ theme, turns out to be by none other than Keith West of ‘Excerpt From A Teenage Opera (Grocer Jack)’ fame in 1967 — the first psychedelic era (when indeed the TV series was first shown) … Les Adams and I are again creating Capital Radio’s New Year’s Eve continuous party music tape, running this year from 9pm until 2am … NANU NANU!

PRESTATYN SOUL WEEKEND 4

ADRIAN WEBB has lost count of the total number of weekenders that he has promoted, something like 38, but knows for sure that the Prestatyn Soul Weekend 4 was his 26th soul weekender. No wonder by now he knows how to get all the arrangements right, the most remarkable aspect of the event being the complete lack of trouble. This, despite over 4,000 revellers being present, divided into different musical factions — although, as DJ John E Walker shrewdly observed, the crowd these days is not really that interested in the music. First timers tended to be togged out in “acieed” style, but although a lot of fast house was played the only jock who really catered for them was Paul Oakenfold. Elsewhere, the acid backlash had begun to bite — which rather unsettled the event’s equilibrium. Had it been held even just a month earlier, I am sure that “acieed!” would have dominated.

As things turned out, few of the jocks seemed fully confident about what they ought to play. Robbie Vincent and Chris Hill had their late night ‘Acid Free Zone’, but were not the only ones to structure whole sets around Seventies soul, Ian Reading being one other example, while Gilles Peterson and Chris Bangs typically churned out vintage funk and jazz. There seemed to be much less feedback between the DJs and the crowd than in earlier years, perhaps because, unlike in the past, few DJs could actually claim that any particular segment of it was in fact “their” crowd. The one exception was superstar Tim Westwood, whose hip hop session was perhaps the most crucial of the weekend. Keith Sweat’s live show was rapturously greeted, but the scrappy PAs that followed were often embarrassing (I missed Royal House who appeared in the afternoon). Karyn White and Troop, slick US chart stars, were by far the best.

Chris Hill, still “The Godfather”, as usual presented the grand finale, and reverted to a tried and trusted formula (that hadn’t been tried for several years), declaring “This is tradition, like Stratford On Avon, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, the last night of the Proms”, as he launched into ‘Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now’ and ‘Bring The Family Back’. He then said, “Some people think they invented going ape shit crazy six months ago, well we invented going ape shit crazy 10 years ago” — and played ‘Shout’! I doubt if anyone ended up having a bad time, but in comparison with past weekenders over the last 10 years it didn’t strike me as being memorable. However, for those who want memories of it, a full length colour video of the highlights will be available for £16.99, while tickets for Prestatyn 5 (over Easter, March 24-26) are also now bookable from LiveWire on 01-364 1212.

HOT VINYL

KEITH SWEAT ‘Don’t Stop Your Love (Extended Version)’ (Elektra EKR84T)
Sadly ignored here on import but right in the current US groove, this “lurve rap” introed typical thuddingly jolted swaying 0-102-102⅙bpm anxiously romantic jogger is now coupled only by its more slinkily undulating 0-102⅓bpm so-called House Mix and a spasmodically rhythmic Acappella Groove (surely Keith’s Rap would have made more sense?). It may not be acid, rap or new beat, but do give it a chance!

TURNTABLE ORCHESTRA ‘You’re Gonna Miss Me’ (RePublic Records LICT 011)
Spearheading the switch to “garage” from “acid” yet widely ignored when new on import months ago, this jangling piano and moaning guy nagged burbling 0-115¾bpm jitterer, interrupted by a ‘phonecall from his cheatin’ Spanish girlfriend, is now flipped on initial UK pre-release pressings by the earlier Marshall Jefferson produced KYM MAZELLE ‘I’m A Lover‘, a moaned and hollered 118¼-116¾bpm lurchingly pulsed MFSB-ish smooth leaper (both due for separate commercial release).

CHERRELLE ‘Affair’ (US Tabu OZ 44148)
Largely Jam & Lewis created very welcome strong set by soulful Cherrelle Norton, the two obvious Alexander O’Neal duetted standouts being the ‘Saturday Love’-ish jogging 105½bpm ‘Keep It Inside’ and (due on 12 inch here) typical swaying lushly soulful 0-91-0bpm ‘Everything I Miss At Home‘, the rest of side two having her own co-created gospel-ish superb 0-55⅙-0pm ‘Lucky‘, attractively yearning (0-)92¼bpm ‘My Friend‘ and tranquil 54bpm ‘Crazy (For Loving You)’, Jimmy & Terry hitting their Janet Jackson style stride for the upbeat side one’s go-go hip hop jiggled (0-)101⅙bpm ‘Pick Me Up‘, and ‘Fake’-ish 111-0bpm title track, less good (0-)115⅙bpm ‘What More Can I Do For You’, (28⅔-)114⅔-0bpm ‘Looks Aren’t Everything’, 112⅔-0bpm ‘Happy That You’re Happy With Me’, 0-112¼-0bpm ‘Discreet’.

MARSHALL JEFFERSON Presents TRUTH ‘Open Our Eyes’ (ffrr FFRX 18)
Following on from the philosophical slant of Marshall’s Jungle Wonz ‘Time Marches On’ oldie, this “deep house” atmospheric flute doodled and brook babbled breathy mystical mutterer with a gently pulsing and pattering backing is here in its 120⅓-119-120⅓-0bpm Celestial Mix, (0-)120⅓bpm Spiritual Mix and 120⅓bpm Elevated Dub, whereas its now import-only rambling The Enlightenment mix somehow strikes me as being the quintessential version. Whatever, they’re all haunting.

ROYAL HOUSE ‘Yeah Buddy (Extended Mix)’ (US Idlers WAR-029)
Rapidly promoed here also by Champion (CHAMP 12-91), Todd Terry’s crazed samples crammed 122¾-123-123¼-0bpm jerky leaper is remixed from the album and coupled with the ‘Stone Fox Chase’-based juddery 0-106⅓-0bpm ‘The Chase‘, and (0-)122½-0bpm ‘Dirty Beats‘ – which (as the UK pressing’s alternative ‘Can You Beats’ title suggests) is the bonus beat for ‘Can You Party’. Hot, or what?

HARDHOUSE ‘Check This Out’ (Champion CHAMP 12-94)
Todd Terry reputedly tossed off this Serious Intention chords-based jauntily racing (0-)120¼-0bpm simple instrumental leaper in a matter of minutes as sort of payment for his past use of Serious Intention samples! As you can guess, it’s not a masterpiece, but he could sample the football scores and it would sell right now. The ‘11:55‘ flip finds him in his hip hop style, cutting ‘The Champ’ and more through a funky drummered 0-108⅙bpm instrumental in two Bee Boys mixes.

T LA ROCK ‘Flow With The New Style’ (US Fresh Records FRE-80126)
Todd Terry produced and co-penned jittery dense (0-)103¾-0bpm droning rap with a longer more inventive 103¾-0bpm Dub Mix, flipped by the familiar piano jangled rolling looser (0-)97-0bpm ‘You Got The Time‘, also with a longer Instrumental (and Dubapella). That’s all for this week’s TT section!

MAC BAND featuring THE McCAMPBELL BROTHERS ‘Jealous (Remix)’ (MCA Records MCAT 1292)
Buzzing synth tone and “J-E-A-L-O-U-S” spelling started chunkily lurching 116bpm jaunty staccato strider with snappy then lushly harmonised vocal interplay, promoed in five mixes of which not all may be commercially available here.

JILLIAN MENDEZ ‘Get Up’ (US Bigshot Records BR-125035)
Wailing simple sparsely tapped early Eighties-like disco strider weaving catchy keyboard lines in its 120⅚-121-121⅓bpm E.Z. Mix, 0-121-0bpm Nix Bop Mix and particularly jaunty synth piped instrumental 121⅚bpm Eastside Dub, coupled also with the “pan pipes” instrumental 119⅚bpm ‘Love’s Over‘, possibly with wide appeal.

THE DYNAMIC GUV’NORS ‘Rock The Discotheques’ (Blapps! Records SEX 069)
Tom toms throbbed frantic nervy 125¾bpm hip hop house jitterer using the same nagging tinny guitar “noise” as Big Daddy Kane, with some rap and vocal scratches in the 0-126¼-0bpm Funky Dope Scratchapella, plus a tom tommed 126⅓bpm Bonus Acid Breather, flipped by the Michael-cutting acidic 120-0bpm ‘Acid Jackson (Let’s Go)‘, all created from loose change and redundancy pay on their own label by Dazzle D, Jazzy Jason and Grand Keyboard Whizz Mark S (who want my BPMs so they can now find things to mix ’em with!).

LONDON RHYME SYNDICATE ‘London Rhyme Syndicate’ (Rhyme Reason Records 12LRS 002)
Spitting and shouting jittery lurching 0-110-0bpm rap ‘n’ scratch (110-0bpm Instrumental), flipped by the First Choice (and ‘Mr Ed’, amongst others) sampling far fiercer frantic 120-0bpm ‘Armed And Extremely Dangerous’, and angrily reasoned juddery 97-0bpm ‘My Poetry‘ — however, mailing list DJs seem slavishly to be charting the A-side, which suggests to me (as so often before) that they’re merely acknowledging receipt rather than a real commitment.

POP DANCE

PET SHOP BOYS ‘Left To My Own Devices (The Disco Mix)’ (Parlophone 12R 6198), thinly pshta pshta-ed then bassier and spoken/sung excitingly surging 0-126½-126¾-0bpm galloper remixed from the ‘Introspective’ album, nicely timed for Christmas party success;

BROTHER BEYOND ‘He Ain’t No Competition (Extended)’ (Parlophone 12R 6193), another Stock Aitken Waterman created Northern Soul-cum-Philly type attractive 125⅔bpm canterer with twanging Joe South/Box Tops-style electric sitar, flipped by the group’s own bubbling and tinkling 124¾bpm ‘Call Me Lonely (Kickback Mix)’, there also being a separately promoed totally different and to my mind rather pointless jittery industrial disco (0-)126bpm ‘He Ain’t No Competition (Space-Hopper Remix)’ (12RX 6193) with a likewise mechanically jittering ‘Call Me Lonely (Get The Sun Remix)’, both losing the originals’ humanity;

BANANARAMA ‘Nathan Jones (Extended Version)’ (London NANX 18), distinctively different friskily leaping Northern Soul-ish Stock Aitken Waterman produced 146bpm update of the Supremes’ 1971 oldie;

SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK ‘Success’ (Parlophone 12R 6196), somewhat unexpected Stock Aitken Waterman produced decidedly “acieed!” 124-0bpm pulsing twitterer, with an unlabelled muttering 128-0bpm bass bounding guitar jiggled flip;

DIANA ROSS ‘Love Hangover (Dance Mix)’ (Motown ZT 42308), Phil Harding & Ian Curnow now add a rumbling jittery new 0-114¼-116-114¾-114-116-115-0bpm cantering beat to Diana’s previously tricky 1976 “disco” classic, also in similarly treated although less radically restructured 0-38/76-114¾-115⅔-113⅔-0bpm Extended Single and 0-38/76-38¼/76½-114¼-115⅔-116-113⅔-0bpm 12 Inch Versions (a pity they couldn’t have synched everything to a digital click track!);

STOCK AITKEN WATERMAN ‘SS. Paparazzi’ (PWL Records PWLT 22), frantic jittery leaper in four 124½bpm versions, the kazoo-ed and sample-style muttered Yoyo’s Clicking Camera Mix, camera motordrive punctuated The Hassell-Bladder Mix, more electro The Beat Boys Beat It Mix, and piano plinked house-ish Yoyo’s Dub Mix (the last three all instrumental);

NEW ORDER ‘Fine Time’ (Factory FAC 223), snarling and snorting angular jumpy 125bpm racer with a drily thudding break and more “house”-ish B-side instrumental, a real Balearic beat (well, it was recorded on Ibiza!);

RICK ASTLEY ‘Take Me To Your Heart’ (Autumn Leaves Mix)’ (RCA PT 42574), Stock Aitken Waterman created monotonously bellowing 119⅔bpm jerky galloper, probably not strong enough to be the real smash he badly needs, flipped by his own more soulful loping 119⅔bpm ‘I’ll Be Fine‘;

BOMB THE BASS featuring MAUREEN ‘Say A Little Prayer’ (Rhythm King DOOD 123), Maureen wailed adventurous minimally backed ticking and booming slow 47⅙/94⅓bpm Dionne Warwick/Aretha Franklin revival (inspired by Smith & Mighty?), flipped by the sparsely twittering acidic (0-)128-0bpm ‘10 Seconds To Terminate‘;

THE ESCAPE CLUB ‘Wild, Wild West (Dance Mix)’ (WEA U7928T), ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’ patterned US chart-topping jauntily lurching (0-)140-0bpm backbeat smacker by some hoarse UK rockers, with a catchy West Indian accented interlude (and an eyecatching video), surely destined to do well here eventually;

FOUR TOPS ‘Loco In Acapulco’ (Arista 611850), Phil Collins & Lamont Dozier created, Phil Harding & Ian Curnow remixed piano plinky-plunked lively “Latin” Matt Bianco/Gibson Bros-flavoured but then typical hoarsely sung 123bpm jaunty leaper from the ‘Buster’ film;

TIFFANY ‘Radio Romance (Dance Mix)’ (MCA Records TIFFT 5), plaintively sung hi-hat hissed tapping and thrashing frenetic racer — so much so that it seems far faster than 136¼bpm — sounding very similar to the Ronettes’ ‘Be My Baby’, with some nice yakkety sax;

BOOTLEGGERS ‘Hot Mix 3’ (Bass Records BSS 12-5), ‘Rock Of Ages’ hymn introed jittery (0-)122¼bpm “house music all night long” mix-up of Royal House, Brat Pack, d.mob and others’ elements (in four mixes), created by the Gangsters Of House;

THE REGGAE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA ‘Minnie The Moocher’ (Mango 1215 378), strings backed some-times skanking 119½-0bpm strange infectious pop treatment of Cab Calloway’s 1930s classic;

THE BOOZIN’ BANG’N DANCE CREW ‘Kiss My Ass (House Anarchy Mix)’ (Polarvox KISSMX 001, via Bullet), phonetically enunciated though foul mouthed thumping 0-117¾-0bpm disco chugger from Scandinavia, chanted and “rapped” over various samples and scratches, breaking apparently in the North-East (which seems quite likely!);

FRONT 242 ‘Headhunter (V1-0)’ (Red Rhino Europe RRET 6), nasally snarled throbbing 123-0bpm electro punk jitterer selling to the Nitzer Ebb orientated Balearic house crowd, flipped by the “Jesus is here!” glorying more industrial 0-119½-0bpm ‘Welcome To Paradise‘;

NEW BEAT GENERATION ‘Suck The Beat’ (Belgian Subway Records SUB-038), billed on the sleeve as ‘Suck The Beat’ and on the label as just ‘Suck’, this aggressively lurching and cranking (0-)113bpm “new beat” has the same sort of “well let me suck your”-shouting girl as on Taste Of Sugar’s ‘Hmm, Hmm’ and vocoder muttered “this is new beat generation” repetition, between samples of Pink Floyd’s ‘Money’ and more (instrumental flip);

BABYLON 5 ‘Alpha Omega’ (Cheque This Records ABBB199, via Pinnacle), pshta pshta-ed, vocodered, sizzled and guitar yowled 123-0bpm London recorded “new beat” thudder created by Tom Danvers and Chris Checkley with Belgian DJ Inger Von Hauwe from Antwerp’s La Rocca Club (unlabelled ‘Space Bass’-meets-Jimi Hendrix-ish 127¼-0bpm flip);

<KISS AMC> featuring the ruthless rap assassins ‘Let-Off’ (Murdertone/Syncopate 12SY 22), Phil Collins ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’ bass underpinned frantic messy (0-)196-0bpm leaper sampling Little Stevie’s ‘Fingertips’, the Isley’s ‘Shout’ and more behind some raucous shouting rap by the two Manchester girls and their male supporters, the flip’s much deffer (0-)94bpm ‘Kiss AMC‘ being a more routine and rather lacklustre rap;

2 BRAVE ‘Stop That Girl (Extended Galapagos Mix)’ (London LONX 205), still the volume pumpers keep coming, this ‘Think (About It)’ based jittery 114¼bpm chugger actually being overlaid by a yearning pop vocal for the little girls, although two of its four mixes are instrumental;

B*V*S*M*P ‘Be Gentle (European Club Mix)’ (Debut DEBTX 3059), another ‘I Need You’-like 107⅓bpm juvenile rap ballad;

INFORMATION SOCIETY ‘What’s On Your Mind (Pure Energy)’ (London LONX 211), drearily derivative “new romantic” copying 0-118-0bpm US hit lurcher here in three extremely stuttery “electro”-type remixes by Little Louie Vega, the dub apparently proving more useful;

STRENGTH ‘The Girl For Me (Build The Beat Mix)’ (Arista 611898), Croydon’s Funkrew (as they used to be) feature Dotty Green disjointedly wailing through a jangling and jiggling 122bpm pop house rhythm;

DANCE ADDICTION ‘Don’t Stop’ (Bolts Records/Musiktek NUTSX 101, via Pinnacle), untidily jolting stuttery 122⅓-0bpm pop house cooed by a Portsmouth girl duo, quoting from Chic’s ‘Dance Dance Dance (Yowsah Yowsah Yowsah)’ at the start.

REMIXES

YAZZ ‘Stand Up For Your Love Rights (The Stadium Disco Mix)‘ (Big Life BLR 5R), useful solidly rattling and bounding 123-0bpm remix by Coldcut, Yazz not singing at all for the first four or so minutes, flipped by the Beatmasters’ Boney M-ish acidically twittering 0-123⅓bpm She’s Crazy Mix;

PIA ‘Dance Out Of My Head (Ben Liebrand Mix)‘ (Epic 653123 6), percussively clonking and rattling (0-)116¼-Obpm jittery remix which perhaps cuts through better than the original;

KYLIE MINOGUE ‘Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi (The Revolutionary Mix)‘ (PWL Records PWLT 21 R), bass striding “I love you” stuttering 118¾-0bpm Phil Harding remix;

D.MOB (featuring Gary Haisman) ‘We Call It Acieed (The Living Beat Remix)‘ (ffrr FFRXR 13), unnecessary 124bpm marketing remix by Simon Harris.

  1. Finally, almost exactly a year after its first mention in these pages, Ce Ce Rogers ‘Someday’ enters The Club Chart. Although issued as a UK promo in 1987, it wasn’t officially released as an A-side until 2018, merely appearing on the B-side of ‘Forever’ in 1989.

    The Pet Shop Boys and Trevor Horn was a marriage made in heaven, and the full length Disco Mix of ‘Left To My Own Devices’ was nothing less than a masterpiece, filling my floors where ‘Domino Dancing’ had cleared them.

    Radiorama’s exceptionally banal ‘A B C D’ hung around at gay clubs well into 1990, and its chorus makes for an exceptionally annoying earworm. Oh, how we suffered.

  2. The footage of the Reactor acid room from around 7.10-10.45 must be some of the best (if not THE best acid house footage there is) from 1988-89 – and aside from a few seconds of news/current affairs type film from a club in the summer of 1988 must be about the only decent 1988 as opposed to 1989 footage there is. And as has been mentioned on the internet before this must be the first ever rave anywhere in the world of the size that we’ve known them from 1989 onwards ever since. You could get a couple of thousand in that room IIRC.
    It’s also interesting to see how different everything was raving in 1988, no bottles of water anywhere, people dancing with lager above their heads but also a lot of things that never changed too.

    Ir was also aside from an “along for the ride” trip to a freezing cold 1990 weekender in Southport (my only ever excursion raving in the north before I moved up here in 1997) my last ever weekender experience after about 6 years of regularly attending Caister, Bournemouth, Bognor etc.

    JH momentarily seems a bit out of touch around this period – I heard him speak on Kiss years later (1994/95 ish?) and he was right at the cutting edge again but around 1988 his distaste for a lot of the acid seemed to see him take his eye off the ball for a few months. For instance there have been a few absolutely massive tunes “Where’s Your Child”, ‘Acid Thunder” Hardhouse’s “Check This Out”, the boss mix of Mac Thornhill’s “Pressure”, Perfectly Ordinary People for example which were pretty omnipresent at the London area acid clubs and some of the earliest M25 parties Genesis etc that autumn which he seems decidedly underwhelmed with. He seems more taken sometimes with New Beat and the noisier side of 1987/88 Balearic which I don’t remember hearing at all when I was out.

    Also the best (or any!) mix Samantha Fox’s “Love House” hasn’t even made the Top 100 but I remember hearing it a lot out at the time. But this may bring us to the fact that that although London and the South East was acid crazy in the summer and autumn of 1988 most of the rest of the country still hadn’t taken to it in a big way so “Love House” being played by a few London acid DJ’s wasn’t going to get it in the dance charts nationwide.

    Anyway great column and time machine as ever.

  3. the acid house footage I mentioned was in the first clip here (Prestatyn 2). That could be an interesting quiz qestion where was the first ever large scale rave ever London?, Berlin?, Chicago maybe? no probably Prestatyn in north Wales!

    1. I could only find these three clips. It looks as if the original uploader made the later clips available on their Facebook page, but the page seems to have disappeared.

  4. The other parts seem to have gone years ago I remember trying to find the others years back on Facebook and they’d already gone. I’m just glad that the film maker made what he did as not just acid house , but also with jazz-funk, clubs/discos in general and even stuff as late as hardcore there’s seems to be so little film as opposed to audio.
    Live music seems much better served as there seems to be live performances of quite obscure bands right back to the 1960s and bands who subsequently became big in relative profusion.
    Obviously the advent of the phone camera means younger people will be able to tap into their visual nostalgia far easier in years to come.
