Disco News
Camberley Frenchies have a Wally Night with Bee Gees music and other ghastly fun on Sunday, Feb 4, while on Friday, Jan 26, Chris Hill has a St. Trinian’s Nite at Southgate Royalty – fancy dress desirable at both, of course! . . . Froggy starts a small over 18’s soul club this Thursday (18) at Ilford’s Cauliflower pub hall, members only, pub hours, 75p to get in . . . Rudy “Minimix” Gilpin now spins ‘em downstairs on the pop floor at Gulliver’s in Mayfair’s Down Street – supposedly a promotion for him! . . . WEA plan a total 12in blitz in coming months – my lips have to be sealed re details, sorry – but you’ll be amazed! . . . Donald Byrd’s US 12in will be out here next week, for starters, and Supermax’s ‘Lovemachine’ is due on 12in too . . . Boney M. ‘Dancing In The Streets’ will be on remixed US 12in soon . . . THP ‘Two Hot For Love’ LP, reviewed on import last week, is due here now on Rocket (TRAIN 2) . . . Ian Dury is out now on a same-length 12in, while Mankind ‘Dr. Who’ is available on black, blue, grey, green, brown or clear vinyl! . . . Brothers Johnson ‘Ain’t We Funkin’ Now’ has been remixed for 7:30 US 12in, and Leif Garrett is on 6:53 US 12in as well as picture-disc UK 7in . . . Sea Level is out next week, Paradise Express and Gaz on Feb 9, all as 12in – but we must wait until March for Gary’s Gang (which CBS are dangerously close to putting on Dan Hartman-sized 7in unless we all insist otherwise) . . . I hope all true soul fans managed to see Sunday’s South Bank Show film about the black South African music scene – much of the gospel-ish vocal group music and the setting in which it was performed was quite astonishingly like the American equivalent of say fifteen years ago.
New Spins
HERBIE HANCOCK: ‘You Bet Your Love’ (CBS 12-7010)
Worth the wait and already exploding, it’s dynamite steady 118bpm stamper with wailing Stevie Wonder-ish vocoder vocal, catchy chix chorus (the big pop hook) and a terrifically happy rhythm-shifting instrumental drive. Fight for the 8:06 12in, as the 3:56 7in hardly gets going.
EDWIN STARR: ‘Contact’ (20th Century BTCL 2896) (BNDA debut 11/18/78)
Already huge and totally compulsive easily rolling 130bpm rhythm rattler with catchy clapping, synthesizer spurts and good old Edwin gruffly extolling eye-to-eye . . . CONTACT! – on hit-bound 7:21 pink vinyl 12in.
MICK JACKSON: ‘Weekend’ (Atlantic K 11224)
Infectiously romping 116-119bpm thumper has his Stevie Wonder-type vocal sound and bags of bouncy pop appeal. Should smash.
PEACHES & HERB: ‘Shake Your Groove Thing’ (Polydor POSPX 25) (BNDA debut 10/28/78)
Unlike the slow starting 7in, this monster bounding fast 134bpm leaper has a long rhythm intro on 6:32 12in.
ZULEMA: ‘Change’ (London LHLU 10564) (BNDA debut 1/6/79)
Deceptive orchestral intro to a blindingly frantic 132bpm leaper, like a female Sylvester, now on 7:54 12in with a dynamite long rhythm break and instrumental last half (usable on its own).
DAVID SIMMONS: ‘Will They Miss Me’ (Fantasy 12FTC 166)
Off-beat clapping intro changes into an on-beat mellow Teddy Pendergrass-type 124-128bpm Philly thwacker, with a long rhythm break towards the end of the full 6:07 12in.
TASHA THOMAS: ‘Shoot Me (With Your Love)’ (Atlantic LV 4) (BNDA debut 11/4/78)
Bouncy percussion intro to a sultrily sung 124bpm bumper with a ‘Hot Shot’ flavour, big on import for ages and now on full 7:14 12in at £1.49.
BOBBY CALDWELL: ‘Down For The Third Time’ (TK TKR 7515)
Superb funkily tripping 90bpm George Benson-type guitar and vocal groin-grinder has been huge with soul smoochers for months on import.
MARVIN GAYE: ‘A Funky Space Reincarnation’ (from LP ‘Here, My Dear’, Motown TMSP 6006)
Double album of slowies (or home listening or smooch spots, with only this great quietly conversational 96bpm grooving 8:27 swayer emerging as an immediately obvious biggie.
EDDIE HORAN: ‘Turn My World Back Around’ (London LHLU 10585)
Usefully freaky “lift-off” intro to a long-awaited funky 123bpm jitterer with staccato gruff vocal and brass over driving jiggly guitar, on 5:35 12in.
DEBORAH WASHINGTON: ‘Standing In The Shadows Of Love’ (Ariola ARO 145) (BNDA debut 9/23/78)
Straightforward pop-aimed galloping 126bpm Diana Ross-type revival of the Four Tops oldie, minus most of her US LP’s ‘Love Shadow’ intro and faded rather arbitrarily at 3:03.
HERBIE MANN: ‘Superman’ / ‘Etagui’ (Atlantic K 11287)
Hitting on 5:32 import 12in (DK 4708) faster than a speeding bullet, Herbie’s cover of Celi Bee’s old zinger (NOT the movie theme) is a cantering 131bpm pounder with “disco” chix, fizzy strings, rattling rhythm break and a bit of his flute – but it’s only on edited 7in here. Flip’s a good high flying 141bpm funk-jazz leaper, 5:13 on US 12in.
ROSE ROYCE: ‘I’m In Love’ (Whitfield K 17291)
Impressions-like squeaky swayer has prettily weaving high-pitched wailing and an ambiguous 56/113 bpm beat that mixes nicely into Ashford & Simpson/Chaka out of something slower.
BOB JAMES: ‘Touchdown’ LP (CBS/Tappan Zee 83175)
Stanley Turrentine-ish catchy sax-led 5:43 title-track jazz-funk instrumental with a pulsating 118/59 bpm undertow even when things quiet down at times.
EVELYN “CHAMPAGNE” KING: ‘I Don’t Know If It’s Right’ (RCA PC 1386) (BNDA debut 2/3/79)
Not another ‘Shame’, but this attractive mid-tempo comes-and-goes 118bpm swinger on 8:15 12in has some similar if slower clapping and sounds nicely soulful.
JERRY BUTLER: ‘Cooling Out’ (from LP ‘Nothing Says I Love You Like I Love You’, Philadelphia Int’l PIR 83180)
Gorgeous 120bpm swinger now in its 6:26 US 12in form (I presume), which almost made the Disco 90 recently.
ALLNIGHT BAND: ‘The Wigan Joker’ / ‘Six By Six’ (Casino Classics CC 6)
Infectiously tuneful UK-recorded frantically flying 155bpm and 145bpm northern “soul” instrumentals, promo-ed on orange 12in and now on yellow vinyl.
VARIOUS: ‘Capitol Soul Casino’ LP (Capitol CAPS 1025)
Specialist ‘60s soul and garage band rejects, 16 of ‘em, for northern fans.
BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS: ‘Stir It Up’ (Island WIP 6478)
Good sinuously grooving 101bpm live version, due also on 20,000 12in.
MELBA MOORE: ‘You Stepped Into My Life’ (Epic EPC 12-6811) (BNDA debut 10/28/78)
Nicely filled out 7:48 12in version of her languidly soulful 109bpm Bee Gees song now builds through a long instrumental intro and sounds better.
ANDY GIBB: ‘Shadow Dancing’ (RSO RSOX 25)
Long 6:04 version of his old 120bpm plodder, on blue vinyl 12in with pic label and see-thru sleeve, plus another achingly yearning quavery smoocher as A-side, ‘(Our Love) Don’t Throw It All Away’.
Imports
INSTANT FUNK: ‘I Got My Mind Made Up’ (US Salsoul SG 207) (BNDA debut 1/27/79)
Dynamite 9:46 remix 12in starts with over half the record as an instrumental (so it may work best at first if you mix into it out of the UK version), the whole thing being totally reworked and lots of fun for funksters!
VARIOUS: ‘Steppin’ To Our Disco’ LP (US Polydor PRO 060)
An American ‘CBS Instant Replays’-type promotional-only disco sampler, mixed by Studio 54’s Rich Kaczor, has some nifty running mixes as well as on-the-beat chops, but suffers from the US-slanted material used: Gloria Gaynor, Bionic Boogie, Alicia Bridges, Miquel Brown, Arpeggio / Joe Simon, Don Ray, Isaac Hayes, Kikrokos, Peaches & Herb (side one working best). In its favour, it often only uses short segments from the tunes, which is true to the disco style, whereas on the CBS promo LP we were also trying to give jocks the full-length versions when we should really have been mixing earlier on some.
GREY & HANKS: ‘Dancin’’ (from LP ‘You Fooled Me’, US RCA AFL1-8069) (BNDA debut 1/20/79)
Great lurching 7:08 122bpm stamper with throatily growled vocals, girlie group chanting and rattling rhythm break, struts along beautifully and is already hitting hard here.
LONNIE LISTON SMITH: ‘Space Princess’ / ‘Quiet Moments’ (US Columbia 28-10882)
Happily jumping discos gem with zingy chix ‘n strings but funky undertow and wailing Lonnie progresses through 124-127-129(an amazing Brazilian percussion break)-127bpm on 7:01 12in, and has an equally good lovely tranquil 59-61bpm instrumental flip.
BILL SUMMERS: ‘Straight To The Bank’ (US Prestige D-120) (BNDA debut 2/10/79)
Jiggling 116bpm clomper drives along with whoop-whoops in the central break on 7:25 12in, while his LP (P-10105) has a shorter version plus the good 31bpm soul smoocher ‘All I Want’.
ARPEGGIO: ‘Love And Desire’ (from LP ‘Let The Music Play’, US Polydor PD 16180) (BNDA debut 12/16/78)
Simon Soussan-produced/created fast 131bpm falsetto vocal group with a Wilbert Longmire-type backbeat and “stun gun” syn-drum breaks, both evident also on the 126bpm ‘Play The Music / I Wanna Tango’ 12:40 title track, which has an overlaid tango bass break and a nice dynamic attacking tempo. Both cuts are getting big.
STANLEY COWELL: ‘The Stoker’ (from LP ‘Talkin’ ‘Bout Love’, US Galaxy GXY 5111)
Jittery bass-bumped 122bpm jazz-funk jiggler in 4:19 instrumental version with Eddie Henderson trumpet, or 5:34 vocal version by a guy sounding a bit like Al Wilson’s ‘The Snake’.
