Disco News

Bournemouth Maison Royale’s Roadshow Of The Year finalists, fighting it out this Thursday (15), are John DeSade (Maidstone) v Steve Maxted (Swanley) v Paul’s Sound Mobile (Salisbury) v Tony Holden (Reading) — and with that line-up it should be a fight indeed! . . . Eddie Henderson ‘Cyclops’ is now on 12in (Capitol 12CL 16034), and the 9:48 “eye-cued” 118bpm remix 12in of T-Connection ‘At Midnight’ is also out (TK TKR 12-7517) . . . Miracle’s remixed Love Symphony Orchestra will NOT have the Penthouse Pet sleeve but is out early March, when they’ll also have Blair ‘Night Life’ on 12in, and Capitol will do a Tavares 12in with instrumental flip . . . Peter Tosh ‘Don’t Look Back’ has resurfaced on remixed dub white-label 12in which could be an ethnic monster if issued properly . . . Island have a one-sided promo 12in of remixed Hi-Tension ‘Power & Lightning’ (130bpm) and ‘Unspoken’ (132bpm) . . . Real Thing’s 12in and 7in turned out not red vinyl but a nasty translucent yellow-green piss colour! . . . Discolonga Max? – really, it could happen! . . . Gill Watkins of Leapfrog Promotions, Priory House, Kingsgate Place, London NW6 (01-328 7251), would like to add both club and mobile jocks to their mailing list . . . Trevor John Hughes has finally found a funk venue, every Fri/Saturday at Oakengates Jubilee ‘77 Club, while Graham Gold’s new Sunday funk gig starting March 11th will be at the Greenford Hotel Barbarellas in Uxbridge Road, Southall, running till 11:30 under the Champers name again . . . Steve Martell, ex-Leicester Fusion and Chesterfield Jingles, is now resident at the soon to be refitted Preston Clouds . . . Chris Lee’s Carvey Bardots funk gig has closed so he’s mobile on Hornchurch 50448 while waiting for another residency – any offers? . . . Bob Jones has had to tone down the Jazz-funk at Chelmsford Dee-Jays (the kids were dancing and not drinking) but still spins hip sounds at Hornchurch Kingswood: however, he’s after funky guest spots (even mobile work with someone else’s gear) on Chelmsford 2924 . . . Essex-based too, Craig Royale is well-known locally for jocking but also runs CR’s Import Records from 8 Elderberry Gardens, Witham, Essex CM8 2PT (Witham 46186) specializing in jazz/funk/soul/latin, so send for a catalogue . . . Carl Anthony Henry (Blackpool), you’re hip in spirit but “B” in fact!

New Spins

PLAYERS ASSOCIATION: ‘Turn The Music Up!’ LP (Vanguard VSD 79421) (BNDA debut 4/7/79)
Quite simply – it’s here! Hottest import LP for ages, every cut’s a killer, from the dynamite 115-118bpm title track through the smoochy 88bpm instrumental ‘The Closer I Get To You’, 132bpm ‘Everybody Dance’, 107bpm ‘I Wish’, 47/95bpm ‘More Than A Little Bit’ and 120bpm ‘Ride The Groove’, it’s jazz-funk disco perfection.

HERBIE HANCOCK: ‘Tell Everybody’ (from LP ‘Feets Don’t Fail Me Now’, CBS 83491) (BNDA debut 7/14/79)
Forget ‘You Bet Your Love’ (included here of course), as this dynamite 7:12 storming 120bpm leaper is like it but even more so! Already exploding for hip jocks, it chop mixes nicely on into Damon Harris (minus the latter’s intro). Other hot cuts are the 118bpm ‘Ready Or Not’ freaker and wistful ‘Trust Me’ smoocher.

WEA LV SERIES: With several titles in this “Long Version” 12in set already climbing the chart, and full catalogue details given last week, I must apologize for not reviewing them all in full now as promised . . . but it has been possibly the hottest week for disco releases in memory and there just isn’t room! You’ll find BPM info (sometimes slightly inaccurate) on most of the labels, and – apart from the terrific Bettye LaVette re-mix – the material is all well known. Reviews next week – but get ‘em now!

CAROLINE CRAWFORD: ‘Coming On Strong’ / ‘A Nice Feeling’ (Mercury 9198055)
Hamilton Bohannon-powered 132bpm frantically flying excitement with rawly wailing vocal yells from his ‘Let’s Start The Dance’ singer, on 4:57 12in, while the equally strong 5:11 flip’s a beautiful jazzy 115bpm instrumental stamper, big for many especially in the North-West. Hot on import for months, these are absolute musts.

RICK JAMES: ‘High On Your Love Suite’ (from LP ‘Bustin’ Out Of L Seven’, Motown STML 12104)
Rising synthesizer note explodes into a great dynamic wind-up (which chops well out of Real Thing) before the 131bpm backbeat clapper races into a 4:30 groove that switches suddenly into a skippable 126bpm ‘One Mo Hit’. Also warm are the P-funky 102bpm ‘Bustin’ Out’ and 114bpm ‘Cop ‘N’ Blow’, while the soulfully lilting 124bpm ‘Fool On The Street’ should soon rank as second hottest.

MIKE MANDEL: ‘Peg’ (Vanguard VSL 5010)
Steely Dan’s oldie in its currently big jazz-funk instrumental version has now been remixed for even better 5:09 122bpm 12in, and is off-beat ‘n catchy enough to hit via radio too! The basically 122bpm ‘Jupiter Finger’ flip goes through some slow jazzy changes.

DIANA ROSS: ‘What You Gave Me’ (Motown 12 TMG 1135) (BNDA debut 12/23/78)
Exciting fast 134bpm galloper on 6:06 12in with “eye-cue” scrolling to show the breaks – try chopping the catchy synthesized guitar bit out of Paradise Express at an appropriate point!  Flip’s the full 6:00 of 1970’s tempo-changing slow ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’.

BILL SUMMERS & SUMMERS HEAT: ‘Straight To The Bank’ (Prestige PRC 101) (BNDA debut 2/10/79)
Rumbling and tapping 116bpm funk chugger on 7:25 12in – with “whoop-whoop” girls in Phil Kaffei’s disco mix version, but there’s also another less good mix with a rhythm-less accapella break and I’m not sure which one’s due out here!

MARVIN GAYE: ‘A Funky Space Reincarnation’ (Motown 12 TMG 1138)
Steadily ticking 96bpm meanderer, now on “eye-cued” 8:15 12in with his old 1977 chugging 123bpm ‘Got To Give It Up’ as extra-value 11:48 flip!

JIMMY LINDSAY: ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ (Gem GEM 12 1)
Already exploding, this great reggae retread of Bill Withers’s oldie starts at 39 bpm before cranking up to 69bpm, on 5:50 12in.

T-CONNECTION: ‘Saturday Night’ (from LP ‘T-Connection’, TK TKR 82546) (‘At Midnight’ BNDA debut 1/6/79)
Roger Scott-plugged infectious 4:28 jittery 112bpm ‘Tighten Up’ rhythm jiggler with “ooh oohs” and much more appeal than the also included 5:06 ‘At Midnight’ (here in neither 7 nor 12in mix at 114bpm). The limply chugging 109bpm ‘Midnight Train’ and P-funky 88bpm ‘Funkannection’ and 103bpm ‘Funky Lady’ are also warm for some.

GLORIA GAYNOR: ‘I Will Survive’ (Polydor POSPX 31) (BNDA debut 11/11/78)
As we’re gonna have to live with this 117bpm 4:50 12in for a while, one way around the slow intro is to run it through Cheryl Lynn’s 12in rhythm break! The funkier ‘Anybody Wanna Party’ flip’s a 119bpm freak stamper, worth checking too.

BONEY M: ‘Painter Man’ (Atlantic K 11255)
Typically unsubtle 132bpm pop treatment of the ‘60s Creation oldie.

VARIOUS: ‘Crazy Favourites’ EP (MCA MCAEP 5)
Great four-tracker for rock ‘n roll party time includes Johnny Cymbal ‘Mr Bassman’, Don Woody ‘Barking Up The Wrong Tree’ and Leroy Pullins ‘I’m A Nut’.

AFRO CUBAN BAND: ‘Black Widow Woman’ / ‘Delicado’ (Arista ARIST 12230)
Mike Zager-produced 126bpm lurching pounder with wailing chick, on 5:35 12in. Also 126bpm but very Latin, the mainly instrumental 6:38 flip has cha-cha ‘n tango touches – which could be useful.

RITZ: ‘It’s Your Love’ (Blue Inc INC 5)
Messily mixed but nicely leaping 133bpm filer with staccato “ba-bap-BEE-da” scatting and jazz-funk chording on 4:38 12in B-side.

MILLIE JACKSON: ‘My Man Is A Sweet Man’ (Spring POSPX 29)
1972 Northern hit now on frantic 137bpm remixed 4:05 12in, with the sleazily swinging 63/106bpm ‘Here You Come Again’ and uncensored marathon dead slow ‘All The Way Lover’ as maxi-flip.

JOE SIMON: ‘Love Vibration’ (Polydor POSPX 26)
Croakily sung chattering, a rhythm break before the end.

GENERAL JOHNSON: ‘Can’t Nobody Love Me Like You Do’ (Arista ARIST 12237)
Norman’s unmistakable voice (remember Chairmen Of The Board?) cuts soulfully through the hi-hat hissing 117bpm rolling beat, on pop-aimed 5:25 12in.

WILD FANTASY: ‘Jungle Drums’ (Magnet 12 MAG 136)
Long clonking 125bpm intro eventually reaches chix, fella, Injun rhydum and finally percussion break on this pop-slanted 6:22 12in Canadian cowbell-bashing disco hit.

COOL NOTES: ‘My Tune’ (Jama JA 0047)
Lovely little chix-sung 63/127 bpm reggae swayer.

JOHN HOLT: ‘Just The Way You Are’ (Trojan TRO 9054)
Yet another version, in pleasant 35/71bpm reggae time, already out a while – but I don’t seem to be serviced by Trojan!

LLOYD CAMPBELL & SARA LEE: ‘The Closer I Get To You’ (Blue Inc INC 3)
Donny Hathaway & Roberta Flack’s romantic slowie gets a nice 67bpm reggae reading on 5:08 12in, with instrumental flip.

LATIMORE: ‘Too Hot To Handle’ (TK TKR 7524)
Barry White-type 46/92bpm soul swayer with a hint of Bobby Caldwell-style guitar.

BOOKER T. JONES: ‘Let’s Go Dancing’ (A&M AMS 7415)
Pleasant if unremarkable slow 106bpm vocal swayer, surprisingly People’s Choice winner on Capital Radio.

PATRICK JUVET: ‘Another Lonely Man’ / ‘Where Is My Woman’ (Casablanca CAN 142)
Rip-off time, as this dead slow smoocher and KC-type 123bpm flip have both been B-sides to hits before.

STARGARD: ‘Sensuous Woman’ (MCA 404)
Sinuously soulful but messy 116bpm funk burbler.

CLAUDJA BARRY: ‘(Boogie ‘Woogie) Dancin’ Shoes’ (Lollipop LOLLY 5) (BNDA debut 4/14/79)
Euro-flier with snickety 144bpm synthetic backing may have Northern and some pop appeal, but it’s too fast really.

Imports

LEMON: ‘A-Freak-A’ (from LP ‘Lemon’, French CBS 83344) (BNDA debut 1/6/79)
Worth the wait, I’ve finally got this US Prelude LP but in its French translucent lemonlike yellow vinyl version – and it’s dynamite! This 6:14 hit is a skipping 126bpm jumper with shrill girlie group scatting and terrific jazzy guitar (the best bit), while the also hot 6:14 ‘Chance To Dance’ is 128bpm with many more diverse instrumental passages and rhythm shifts. Both are superb classy productions.

GIBSON BROTHERS: ‘Cuba’ (French Zagora 6172558) (BNDA debut 4/7/79)
Also on 12in and due on Island in a fortnight, this madly catchy 122bpm salsa pounder mixes perfectly with Karen Young’s ‘Hot Shot’, and is sure to hit hard.

MACHINE: ‘There But For The Grace Of God Go I’ (US RCA PD 11457) (BNDA debut 1/27/79)
Controversial fast pounding 136bpm protest song features a WASP-raised chick rebelling against her parents’ “no blacks, no Jews, no gays” attitude – all on exciting if overly-shrill 5:18 12in.

THE DELLS: ‘Face To Face’ LP (US ABC AA 1113)
Subtle low-key 104bpm hypnotic 6:21 jogger with a tugging 52 bpm clapping off-beat builds up an accumulative soulful power.

FATBACK: ‘Brite Lites, Big City’ LP (US Spring SP-1-6721)
Although the monotonous 111 bpm ‘Freak The Freak The Funk (Rock)’ – which ties into the new Rock dance – has been edited from 7:25 for US 7in, the smooth Brass Construction-ish 5:42 ‘(Do The) Boogie Woogie’ 127bpm churner is getting more attention here, despite some slick chix.

SHOTGUN: ‘Don’t You Wanna Make Love?’ (US ABC AB-12452)
Powerful 122bpm funk burbler with a whapping Wilbert Longmire-like half-tempo backbeat, on edited 3:32 7in.

G.B. EXPERIENCE: ‘Disco Extravaganza’ (US Atlantic DSKO 135)
Out a while, this long US-style 12:35 12in has recently been cut up for 7in but remains best in its purposefully thudding 127bpm “disco suite” form, with Angie Griffin’s vocals and various elaborate orchestral or rhythm passages (good for mixing into other records), plus an instrumental 11:45 flip.

CRACKIN’: ‘Double Love’ (US Warner Bros. PRO-A-769)
Olympic Runners-ish jittery 108bpm funk jolter with staccato harmonies and booming bass, on recently circulated 5:28 promo 12in, edited from their ‘Special Touch’ album (BSK 3235).

Hot Vinyl

Robbie Vincent (Dartford Flicks on Thursdays) import tips:
DELLS: ‘Face To Face’ (US ABC LP)
BREAKWATER: ‘Work It Out’ (US Arista LP)
HUBERT EAVES: ‘Painful Pleasure’ (US Inner City LP)
LONNIE SMITH: ‘Sweet Honey Wine’ (US LRC LP)
MOTHERS FINEST: ‘Love Changes’ (US Epic 7”)
KEANE BROTHERS: ‘Dancing In The Moonlight’ (US ABC 7”)
Plus praises the new UK 12-inchers by Mike Mandell, Howard Kenney, Willie Hutch, and is big on:
HERBIE HANCOCK: ‘Tell Everybody’ / ‘Trust Me’ (CBS LP) (BNDA debut 7/14/79)
CLEVELAND EATON: ‘West Coast Disco’ (Miracle LP)

He also mixes the Winners ‘Get Ready For The Future’ (Ariola) 7in synthesizer break into the ditto 12in promo’s synth break, into either Rick James ‘High On Your Love’ (Motown LP) synth intro or into any of the Mantus ‘Freestyle Rhythm’ (US SMI 12”) rhythm bits. Further, Robbie wonders if anyone can beat the 31in flares that some loon sported at a recent silly night – they were so voluminous they were like a small tent!
