WEA’s LV Set

As promised, here’s a run-down on the two-week old set of long version 12in “LV”s issued by WEA. Be prepared to check the BPMs as printed on the labels against those printed here, as the labels are not always correct. (My BPMs may not always correspond with others either, but at least if you stick with me you’ll be consistent!)

CHIC: ‘I Want Your Love’ (Atlantic LV 16) (BNDA debut 12/16/78)
Insidious little mid-tempo 115bpm jittery swayer, on 6:53 remix 12in or shorter 7in – the latter flipped by the heavy 101bpm ‘(Funny) Bone’ funk instrumental, while the 12in has both ‘Le Freak’ and the already hot Latin-type 113bpm ‘Chic Cheer’, with long applause intro.

DENNIS BROWN: ‘Money In My Pocket’ (Lightning LV 5)
Monster reggae import for months, the dynamite catchy 78bpm groover will now crossover and smash pop.

FANTASTIC FOUR: ‘B.Y.O.F. (Bring Your Own Funk)’ (Atlantic LV 14)
Great 6:02 clapping 123bpm freak stamper harks back to the ‘60s soul sound, even working Wilson Pickett’s ‘1000 Dances’ chant into its otherwise modern framework, and mixes superbly into Philly Cream ‘Sly-Hi’ and Montana ‘I Love Music’ (skipping very start of both). The remixed chugging 113bpm ‘Sexy Lady’ flip is now less Hot Chocolatey than before, and big for some already.

WILLIE HUTCH: ‘Come On And Dance With Me’ (Whitfield LV 10)
Relentlessly pushing fast 126bpm chugger like the Isleys backed by KC, now remixed to 6:25 with his lovely 104bpm ‘Easy Does It’ swayer as flip.

AQUARIAN DREAM: ‘You’re A Star’ (Elektra LV 7)
Huge before Xmas, the dynamite subtle 126bpm jazz-funk groover starts eerily and progresses through 5:30 of lovely lush instrumental and breathy vocal sections, with some Friends Of Distinction-style staccato “youcandigit” bits.

BETTYE LAVETTE: ‘Doin’ The Best That I Can’ (Atlantic LV 9) (BNDA debut 8/12/78)
Completely remixed 11:03 version strings together every sort of break they could extract from the original master tape (lots of the individual parts making good mixers), with a long thin-sounding 127bpm rhythm intro which somewhere reaches 130bpm but generally settles for 128bpm.

KAREN YOUNG: ‘Hot Shot’ (Atlantic LV 8) (BNDA debut 6/17/78)
Last autumn’s 121bpm smash now for the first time here in its full 8:40 vocal version – just in time to mix with the similar Gibson Bros ‘Cuba’ next week!

HOWARD KENNEY: ‘Save Some For The Children’ (Warner Bros. KLV15)
Disjointed skippable start to a mildly jogging 121bpm thunker with weird-sounding Smokey Robinson-ish double-tracked vocal, big last year.

PATRICK ADAMS PRESENTS PHREEK: ‘Weekend’ (Atlantic LV 11)
Blandly thumping chix-sung 8:12 freaker accelerates smoothly from 126 to 128bpm, while the beefier and better 5:44 ‘Have A Good Day’ 130bpm flip has wheezling Sine-style synthesizer over monotonous chanting.

SLAVE: ‘Stellar Fungk’ (Cotillion LV 12)
Great gradually unrolling 119bpm heavy funk bumper with lots of developments, and their Brass Construction-ish 120bpm ‘You And Me’ chugger as flip.

DENNIS COFFEY: ‘Gimme That Funk’ (Atlantic LV 6)
Bouncy 124bpm funker cuts beautifully into and out of James Brown oldies, while 129bpm ‘Calling Planet Earth’ flip’s a fast instrumental flier.

NORMA JEAN: ‘Saturday’ (Bearsville LV 13) (BNDA debut 6/17/78)
Creamily churning 131bpm cymbal snicker, big a year ago.

New Spins

G.Q.: ‘Disco Nights (Rock Freak)’ (Arista ARIST 12245) (BNDA debut 2/24/79)
Quick on the mark (unlike some we could name!), Arista have imported and over-stickered 10,000 of this red hot 12in until their UK presses can cope, simply 5:11 of 124bpm disco perfection, which mixes like a dream if you cross from Gary’s Gang ‘Keep On Dancing’ at the second synthesizer splurge into the first guitar glissando near the start of this! And don’t forget the very useable 126 bpm B-side retread of ‘Boogie Oogie Oogie’ . . . it’s double dynamite!

GONZALEZ: ‘Haven’t Stopped Dancing Yet’ (Sidewalk 12SID 102) (BNDA debut 12/12/78)
EMI’s new disco label looks chart-bound with this stupendous restructuring of their old disco hit into an exciting 8:00 12in – now huge in America – given a long rhythm rattling 135bpm Latin percussion intro and break.

LORRAINE JOHNSON: ‘Feed The Flame’ (Epic EPC 7089) (BNDA debut 11/25/78)
Expertly textured soulfully wailing 126bpm disco canterer, edited from overdue US LP for 4:48 7in, this little beauty’s another that mixes nicely out of Gary’s Gang.

VILLAGE PEOPLE: ‘Just A Gigolo / I Ain’t Got Nobody’ (DJM DJS 10899)
Typically hollered but tuneful medley from their final DJM LP, it changes attack from 131 to 134bpm at the join, with the 130bpm ‘In Hollywood’ as flip. However, their official Mercury follow-up 12in, due on March 9th, will be ‘In The Navy’ . . . hel-LO, sailor!

BELL & JAMES: ‘Livin’ It Up (Friday Night)’ (A&M AMSP 7424)
Funkily jogging 119bpm lurcher with Olympic Runners-style harmony chanting on edited 3:20 7in now or this full 7:03 12in next week. I’d wait!

JOE SAMPLE: ‘Carmel’ LP (ABC ABCL 5266)
Crusaders keyboardist’s latest solo follows his ‘There Are Many Steps Along The Way’ smash of last year with a gorgeous listening set of which at least three cuts are hot for jazz-funkers: the melodically meandering but quietly jittery 112bpm ‘Sunrise’, beautiful picture-painting 102bpm rolling piano title-track, and grittily grooving 106-108bpm ‘Cannery Row’ plonker. Specialist, but lovely stuff.

JOE SIMON: ‘Love Vibration’ (Polydor POSPX 26)
Croakily sung chattering 118bpm rhythm roller with chicks ‘n clapping, on 5:04 12in, works into a rhythm break before the end though Joe is more soulful than disco.

RICHARD MYHILL: ‘While London Dances’ (Mercury/Utopia TANGO 6)
Tavares-type 134bpm UK pop bounder, on circular 7in and promo 12in.

LENE LOVICH: ‘Lucky Number’ (Stiff 12BUY 42)
Madly jolly new wave smash will obviously crossover for some, and clocks in at 154/77bpm – not that it needs mixing!

RICO: ‘Take Five’ (Island IPR 2016)
Yet another reggae version of Dave Brubeck’s jazz oldie, this 7:49 limited 12in is a good trombone-led 77bpm dub.

RUFUS: ‘Red Hot Poker’ (from LP ‘Numbers’, ABC ABCL 5263)
Chaka Khan-less, they’re in the washed-out white AWB vocal style, but this attractively jiggling 98/49bpm jazzy minor key 4:30 instrumental is warm in the North-West.

PATRICE RUSHEN: ‘Hang It Up’ (Elektra K 12336)
Deceptively jiggly 98bpm heavy funk with a socking 49 bpm off-beat and jazzy piano.

DOROTHY MOORE: ‘(We Need More) Loving Time’ (Epic EPC 7034)
Dionne Warwick-ish pretty 55/110bpm soul lilter.

NICOLETTE LARSON: ‘Lotta Love’ (Warner Bros. K 17303)
Lazily jogging mellow 115bpm US MoR hit, like a prettified Alicia Bridges.

HONEY: ‘Superman! Superman!’ / ‘Superhythm’ (EMI 2904)
Appalling pop flier, far too fast at 143bpm, but the perkily panting ‘n clapping 122bpm flip is better.

LOVE DE-LUXE: ‘Here Comes That Sound Again’ (Atlantic LV 17) (BNDA debut 6/30/79)
Not really in the main LV set, this plodding dull Euro-type 115bpm girlie group thudder is on 6:25 12in or shorter 7in (K11249) – it seems big in Norfolk, somehow.

BRAZILIAN CONNECTION: ‘Black Coco’ (RCA PC 9360)
Amazingly boring 101bpm 12in plodder, despite exotic origins.

PATTI BOULAYE: ‘You Stepped Into My Life’ (Polydor POSP 37)
Cluttered 108bpm cover of Melba Moore’s Bee Gees roller, this may also be on 12in . . . I’m not sure, as the postman’s been unable to get up my ice-covered hill for five days!

BARRON KNIGHTS: ‘Boozy Nights’ (Epic EPC 7048)
Heatwave-copying 125bpm parody of ‘Boogie Nights’, actually too accurate to be funny.

AVERAGE WHITE BAND: ‘Atlantic Avenue’ (RCA XB 1061)
Chunkily jiggling 43/86bpm swayer on average white vinyl 7in.

CAMEO: ‘Insane’ (Casablanca CAN 143)
Plodding dull 108bpm funk lurcher.

Imports

BREAKWATER: ‘Breakwater’ LP (US Arista AB 4208)
Confidently competent if somewhat dated and derivative funk set by an eight-man band, the hot cuts here being a slow-textured Brass Construction-ish 120bpm ‘Do It Till The Fluid Gets Hot’ rolling chanter, jerky 109bpm ‘Feel Your Way’ meanderer with fast jazzy piano under the slow but jiggly beat and slow-starting 109bpm ‘No Limit’ bouncy thumper.

CROWN HEIGHTS AFFAIR: ‘Dance Lady Dance’ (US De-Lite DE 912)
Self-produced future April LP title track’s a light and airy little 113bpm chugger with some ‘Grazing In The Grass’-style staccato phrasing, due here on longer 12in next month.

WARDELL PIPER: ‘Captain Boogie’ (Midsong MD 501) (BNDA debut 4/14/79)
This excites me less than it does others. Also on 7in, this is the 6:44 promo 12in.

THE GOSPELAIRES: ‘God Helps Those Who Help Themselves’ (US Savoy SDC 0001)
Veteran gospel group from Dayton, Ohio, copy their Mighty Clouds (Of Joy) contemporaries and go disco on 8:48 12in, but the holy material and wukka wukka 116bpm bass beat make it better soul than disco. Ain’t that the Devil’s music?
