March 3, 1979: Gibson Brothers, Grey & Hanks, FLB, Mantus, Peggy Scott

As you read this, I am over in New York attending Billboard’s Disco Forum – mixing (physically!) with all the jocks, producers, pluggers, manufacturers and other members of the world-wide disco industry who have similarly converged for four days on New York’s Hilton Hotel for what promises to be the best Billboard bash yet. If you remember, I made it over to their first forum three years ago, but have not had time to attend any subsequent shows. Next week you can read all the relevant news on this page in RM.

Disco News

Joe Simon and Don Ray are now not due in shops on Polydor 12in until March 16, when Arpeggio ‘Love And Desire’ is also scheduled . . . Tilly Rutherford helms the new Magnet disco dept, with Joanna Kochen still the DJ’s contact, while Lettice has left Arista and Dave McAleer returns from RCA to Pye in next to no time . . . Bob Jones has convinced Chelmsford Dee-Jays to let himself and Paul Gratue funk the joint every Wednesday with imports only, while the Bob ‘n Paul funk team also now do Seven Kings Cauliflower every Tuesday (Hornchurch Kingswood having lost licence) and have a Kingswood Revival Night at Rayleigh Crocs on Thursday next (8) . . . Thames Valley DJA’s new secretary is funky Frank Smith of the Moving Sound roadshow, on Ashford (Middlesex) 42587 days / 52659 nights . . . Ilford’s famous Room At The Top is the latest venue to appeal for their late-night licence to be renewed, and Terry Hooper badly needs favourable support for the club from responsible citizens.

New Spins

GIBSON BROTHERS: ‘Cuba’ (Island 12WIP 6483) (BNDA debut 4/7/79)
Dynamite – the most exciting record of the moment is a madly happy catchily chanted jumping salsa skipper of 7:42 12in with a cleanly zapping 122bpm backbeat and a backing behind the Latin rhythm that’s just like Karen Young’s ‘Hot Shot’! Instrumental flip’s useful for mixing, but try running Lonnie Liston Smith’s Latin break over this and then into Gonzalez!

GREY & HANKS: ‘Dancin’’ (RCA PC 1458) (BNDA debut 1/20/79)
Simple but powerfully effective creamily clomping 122bpm hustler on 6:54 12in, now maybe overshadowed by Gary’s Gang and GQ but still almost in that compulsive class, reaches a frantic “dance dance dancin’” climax.

FLB: ‘Boogie Town’ (Fantasy 12FTC 168)
Fat Larry’s Band as well, with an exciting hot import galloper on 7:41 12in with skippable 116bpm intro before the vocoder and brass whip things up at 126bpm.

MANTUS: ‘(Dance It) Freestyle Rhythm’ (Atlantic LV 19) (BNDA debut 2/17/79)
A solid mess ‘o rhythms, the 133bpm pounder goes through many funky changes and breaks without losing its full-tilt forward thrust, on 9:33 LV 12in with less well-structured 11:00 version as flip.

PEGGY SCOTT: ‘You’ve Got It All’ (Pinnacle PIN 73-12)
Powerhouse hollering 130bpm soul charger in the old style but on clear vinyl 4:33 12in, pushed along by clanging piano, booting sax and remorselessly stomping rhythm.

VOYAGE: ‘Let’s Fly Away’ / ‘Kechak Fantasy’ (GTO GT 245) (BNDA debut 12/2/78)
Catchy lightweight 129bpm pop hustler with twee vocals and interesting electronic effect, while the more exciting dramatically-introed flip is also 129bpm.

GIORGIO MORODER: ‘Chase’ (Casablanca CAN 144) (BNDA debut 1/20/79)
Excellent melodic 127bpm synthesizer instrumental, first reviewed here on the ‘Midnight Express’ soundtrack LP and now finally poised to go pop.

TAVARES: ‘Never Had A Love Like This Before’ (Capitol 12CL 16032)
Pleasant 47/95bpm slowie sounds so much more soulful stretched out to 5:53 on 12in, but it’s the more positively-mixed pretty chorus-accompanied guitar-doodling B-side extension that’s the hotter version for many.

MACHINE: ‘There But For The Grace Of God Go I’ (RCA PC 1456) (BNDA debut 1/27/79)
Causing much controversy in America, this fast pounding 135bpm disco protest song features a shrilly singing chick rebelling against her White Anglo-Saxon Protestant upbringing – it’s got that “no blacks, no Jews, no gays” line – on noisily exciting 5:18 12in, which may not work so well here.

SARAH DASH: ‘Sinner Man’ (Kirshner KIR 12-6973) (BNDA debut 11/11/78)
Wailing intensely building but relatively simple 123bpm jumper on 12in after months of import action.

GEORGE DUKE: ‘Party Down’ (Epic EPC 12-7149)
Throatily growled wailing funk jiggler jitters at 127bpm on 12in with his old classic heavy slow 90bpm P-funky ‘Reach For It’ as flip.

CHAKA KHAN: ‘Life Is A Dance’ (Warner Bros. K 17820)
Heavy slow but bouncy 103bpm wailing funker.

KANDIDATE: ‘I Don’t Wanna Lose You’ (Rak 289)
Limp pretty-pretty 42bpm smoocher, all soft centre and no bite.

GERARD KENNY: ‘D-D-D-Dancin’’ (RCA PB 5136)
Elton John-type derivative fast 136bpm pop rollicker, causing excitement for MoR jocks.

DANNY KAYE: ‘Woody Woodpecker’ (from EP ‘Children’s Favourites 2’, MCA MCEP 7)
Vintage silliness for adventurous MoR jocks.

SUGAR CANE: ‘Valhevala’ (Ariola Hansa AHA 585)
Strictly pop revival of the reggae-slanted Loggins & Messina oldie.

Imports

BREAKWATER: ‘Work It Out’ (from LP ‘Breakwater’, US Arista AB 4208)
Last week’s review jumbled up the fact that this slow-starting Latin-flavoured 95bpm jitterer is the hot import LP’s biggest title so far, and mixes nicely for Chris Hill between George Duke ‘Straight From The Heart’ (US Epic LP) and Dells ‘Face To Face’ (US ABC LP).

WARDELL PIPER: ‘Captain Boogie’ (US Midsong MD 501) (BNDA debut 4/14/79)
Also garbled last week, there’s a long thudding intro to this almost Cleveland Eaton-cum-Karen Young type of wailing chix-sung 131bpm backbeat lurcher, on 8:15 12in, currently exploding after an initial breakout in Manchester.

LEMON: ‘A-Freak-A’ / ‘Chance To Dance’ (US Prelude PRL D 157) (BNDA debut 1/6/79)
Dynamite 12in remixes on the LP’s two best cuts stretches them out to 7:30 and 7:42, upping the tempo to 124bpm and 120bpm respectively, while also adding to ‘A-Freak-A’ some superb isolated synthetic “flip flop” noises as an intro. The only downer is that the beautiful guitar sound has been subdued.

KLEEER: ‘Keep Your Body Workin’’ (US Atlantic DSKO 148) (BNDA debut 4/7/79)
Repetetively growled monotonous but exciting fast churning 128bpm funky roller in the Brass Construction bag, on 5:10 12in with a possibly beefier flipside version that’s billed as “instrumental” without noticeably being so, due here imminently as LV 21.

BEACH BOYS: ‘Here Comes The Night’ (US Caribou 2Z8 9028) (BNDA debut 4/7/79)
Bruce Johnston follows his ‘Pipeline’ disco venture with the full group doing a dynamite pure disco – but PURE disco – 10:36 12in that zaps through the changes at 132bpm! Culled from their up-coming ‘The Beach Boys L.A. (Light Album)’, the cut was first serviced in acetate form by Bruce himself to Capital Radio’s Roger Scott, but the 12in is now out.

HAMILTON BOHANNON: ‘Cut Loose’ LP (US Mercury SRM-1-3762)
Typical jittery 114bpm title-track pulsator, this 7:44 cut is actually due on UK 12in this week too, while the whole LP is being shipped in for release here soon in import form. The faster ‘Let’s Start The Dance’-like 126bpm ‘Mighty Groovy’ is the other hot shot, but neither are natural gases.

THE GLASS FAMILY: ‘Crazy’ (US JDC 12-1) (BNDA debut 2/10/79)
Village People-type hollering 140bpm messy mixture, prettily packaged on 7:40 red vinyl 12in, is far too fast to make proper contact but should be slowed down before UK release on Miracle soon.

KEANE BROTHERS: ‘Dancin’ In The Moonlight’ (US ABC DM 23)
Boffalongo’s classic 1970 original of this later King Harvest hit remains one of my all-time favourites, so this less subtle backbeat-adding Lamont Dozier-produced teenybopper version (not without some slight soul) excites me less than it does others.

Hot Vinyl

Greg Wilson (New Brighton Golden Guinea) raises the point that there is never enough mention of the jazz-funk jocks in the Midlands and North . . . and I can only repeat that I can’t mention them if I don’t hear from them. At least a few are sending in charts now, and I am delighted to give this week’s space to Keith Jones, who spins imports in the Placemate 3 funk room within Manchester’s Placemate 7 disco complex on Whitworth Street. Keith’s import tips include:

WARDELL PIPER: ‘Captain Boogie’ (US Midsong 12”) (BNDA debut 4/14/79)
MONGO SANTAMARIA: ‘Watermelon Man’ (US Tappan Zee 12”)
ALTON MCCLAIN & DESTINY: ‘It Must Be Love’ (US Polydor LP) (BNDA debut 3/24/79)
SWEET TALK: ‘Do The Beat’ (US Mercury LP)
RUFUS: ‘Red Hot Poker’ (ABC LP)
EDWIN BIRDSONG: ‘Goldmine’ (US Philadelphia Int’l 12”)
HAMILTON BOHANNON: ‘Cut Loose’ (US Mercury LP)

Plus the revived METROPOLIS: ‘Go Get It’ (US Salsoul LP), and UK-issued LE PAMPLEMOUSSE: ‘Do You Have Any’ (AVI LP) . . . all alongside other hot current goodies.
