VARIOUS: ‘Turn On The Tap’ (Tappan Zee CBS 13-7333)
Finally, here it is – a four-track 12in EP for £1.99 containing four jazz-funk classics! RICHARD TEE ‘First Love’ is a gorgeous ultra-catchy 122-125bpm piano skipper (it and the similarly happy 121bpm ‘Strokin’’ are also on his LP (CBS 83339), which here fades to a segue into the long-awaited WILBERT LONGMIRE ‘Black Is The Colour’ import smash from last autumn, a naggingly catchy 125bpm jazz driver with sizzling cymbal offbeat – one of the classiest disco hits ever. BOB JAMES ‘Touchdown’ is a melodic comes-and-goes 118/59bpm jazzy jogger, followed by MONGO SANTAMARIA ‘Watermelon Man’, a forcefully rattling and stamping 133bpm remake of his infectiously happy 1963 Latin hit. Go get ‘em!

GREG DIAMOND BIONIC BOOGIE: ‘Chains’ (Polydor POSPX 50) (BNDA debut 11/11/78)
Brilliantly produced exciting powerful 116bpm chugger on remixed noise-filled 6:47 12in with wailing guys and not a gap unfilled – much better than I remembered it, and it always was my favourite LP track. Check the amazing break near the end!

TEENA MARIE: ‘I’m A Sucker For Your Love’ (from LP ‘Wild And Peaceful’, Motown STML 12109)
Rick James prod/penned and largely sung great raunchily rolling, thumping and bumping 116bpm funk burbler, due next week also on 5:54 12in (12 TMG 1146) . . . although I’m unsure if it’ll feature the US 12in mainly instrumental sax-led flip (US Motown M 00024 D1), which many jocks now prefer. Thanks to this 12in, it’s overtaken the originally hotter strutting and stamping 110bpm ‘Don’t Look Back’, the LP’s other main attraction. 

RICHARD EVANS: ‘Burning Spear’ (A&M AMSP 7438)
Marvellous A&M have coupled the import LP’s two hottest cuts for both full-length 12in AND 7in – well done! My own fave and evidently yours, this terrific steadily thumping 118bpm jazz-funk skipper is beautifully arranged and mixes nicely between Jackie McLean and Arthur Adams. However, the official A-side follows the US 12in choice as the more stolid 118bpm ‘Do-Re-Me-For-Soul’, spoilt by superfluous shrill “disco” chix though good otherwise.

GQ: ‘Make My Dream A Reality’ (Arista ARIST 12263)
Great coolly clomping 122bpm soul romper, long an LP hit, links the ‘Disco Nights’ sound to a stronger more flowing song structure and is now at last on 8:12 12in with the also hot and similar 130bpm ‘This Happy Feeling’ as extra-value 5:22 flip!

HARVEY MASON: ‘Groovin’ You’ (Artsta ARTY 166) (BNDA debut 6/16/79)
Potentially a huge UK hit and already a three-plays-nightly monster at Gullivers, this Olympic Runners-ish 121-122bpm leaper lacks the import 12in “bom bom bom” outro in this 5:53 version; however, also warm is the disjointed (c. 124-121-124-122bpm!) but intriguingly different ‘Say It Again’ falsetto harmony jitterer with an excitingly unexpected jaggedly brassy last half.

SPYRO GYRA: ‘Morning Dance’ LP (Infinity IN 2003)
Popular if specialist jazz-funk set, the action tracks being the subtly swaying 102bpm title, throbbing 133bpm ‘Starburst’, jerky 104bpm ‘Heliopolis’, convoluted 120bpm ‘Jubilee’ and (my own fave) George Benson-ish 47/94bpm ‘It Doesn’t Matter’.

CHANSON: ‘I Can Tell’ (Ariola AROC 168) (BNDA debut 4/21/79)
Linda Evans-sung fast jittery 127bpm pounder on 7:02 12in with a totally different sound from ‘Don’t Hold Hack’ (though this was initially bigger last summer on import). Starting as a melodic rattling galloper it booms and bashes up into a frantic Donna Summer-ish hustler.

PEARLY GATES: ‘Fandango Dancing’ (Bronze 12BRO 74)
Biddu-produced creamily chugging bass-pushed 124bpm jogger on 4:20 12in with some good touches amongst the pop trappings. Pity it’s slightly slower than the similar Melba Moore/Bombers hits.

HUDSON PEOPLE: ‘Trip To Your Mind’ (Ensign ENY 2712)
Buoyantly skipping drumkit-pushed 133-136bpm cymbal schlurper remixed by Chris Hill & Robbie Vincent from the Hithouse version for new 9:08 12in, with the busy bass less boomy now and more of the AWB-ish vocal added after the jazzily racing instrumental part.

MORRISSEY-MULLEN: ‘Love Don’t Live Here Anymore’ (EMI-Digital 12DIG 1001)
Rose Royce’s slowie becomes a lushly jolting 104-106bpm sax ‘n guitar jazz-funk swayer on 4:39 12in, recorded by a clarity-enhancing new computer process.

DONNA SUMMER: ‘Bad Girls’ LP (Casablanca CALD 5007) (BNDA debut 4/21/79)
Double LP opens with ‘Hot Stuff’ and the chugging 121bpm strutter stomps straight on into the similar and equally strong 121bpm title track (which, now also on single in the States, could well give her a simultaneous US top two). And so it goes on, one thumper thudding into another on the three fast sides in an overkill of sanitized “disco” frenzy that’s too much to handle in one go. Rock fans should note the ‘Hot Stuff’ guitar’s by Skunk Baxter!

VILLAGE PEOPLE: ‘Go West’ LP (Mercury 9109621) (BNDA debut 4/7/79)
Lots more just like before, the title track 128bpm hollerer being their current single (6007221) also due on remixed 12in (9198274) – however, the included ‘YMCA’ and ‘In The Navy’ are not the remix versions, which seems a wasted opportunity. Also warm, also 128bpm, is ‘I Wanna Shake Your Hand’.

POUSSEZ: ‘Never Gonna Say Goodbye’ (Vanguard VSL 5014) (BNDA debut 4/14/79)
Blandly thumping 131bpm hustler on 7:53 12in, completely lacking the catchy power of their ‘Come On And Do It’ LP hit – though some “oop oops” and a twee tune may win radio plays. The meatier 123bpm pounding ‘Oogie Oogie’-type 7:54 ‘Boogie With Me’ flip has fans already and could be a stronger second best.

THEO VANESS: ‘As Long As It’s Love’ (Epic 12-7265) (BNDA debut 4/14/79)
Fast smacking 132bpm Village People-ish Eurodisco leaper with a “black man, white man, gay man, straight man” lyric on 6:20 12in.

BONNIE TYLER: ‘Married Men’ (RCA PC 5164)
Instrumentally more interesting version of the movie tune thumps along with plenty of gimmicky effects at 122-123bpm, but whether on 12in other than promo I’m unsure.

DETROIT SPINNERS: ‘Are You Ready For Love’ (Atlantic K 11286)
Blandly cantering 131bpm original of the Thom Bell-penned Elton John hit, possibly due here too on 6:15 12in.

INSTANT FUNK: ‘Crying’ (Salsoul 12SSOL 118)
Really soulfully sung rattling 130bpm canterer takes a while to get going on 8:48 12in, with the moodily introduced 120bpm ‘Dark Vader’ story song as 7:19 flip.

TERESA WIATER: ‘Once And For All’ (US UA UA-D6002-D)
Decadent maybe, but this 6:45 12in is dynamite purely because its 128bpm instrumental break happens to mix perfectly out of Anita Ward, synchronising syndrums and all! Before the vocal reappears after 2:05, chop back into Chantal Curtis to continue a killer mix.

GAP MANGIONE: ‘Dancin’ Is Makin’ Love’ LP (US A&M SP-4762)
Smoothly racing 133bpm brassy fast 5:45 title track instrumental, pumped along by ex-Crusaders Pops Popwell and Larry Carlton (producer), while the frantically pounding 142bpm ‘You’re The One’, jogging 113bpm ‘Dreamflow’ and meandering piano-plonked 35/70bpm ‘Takin’ It Back’ are undemanding jazz-funk too.

JAMES BROWN: ‘It’s Too Funky In Here’ (US Polydor PRO 086) (BNDA debut 6/16/79)
Brad Shapiro-prod/arr/penned mellow insidiously chugging 107bpm funk in a less frantic groove than Mr B’s own usual style, though the 6:33 promo 12in still relies on hypnotic repetition to cut through.

PETER BROWN: ‘Crank It Up (Funk Town)’ (US TK Disco 151) (BNDA debut 6/9/79)
Fast chugging 132bpm strutter gets away from his old sound on 10:31 12in with an urgent repetitive title line, jerky stop/starts and long instrumental break, rather like a much faster Marvin Gaye ‘Got To Give It Up’.

NORMA JEAN: ‘Sorcerer’ (US Bearsville BSSD 0339) (BNDA debut 6/17/78)
Nile Rodgers/Bernard Edwards-prod/arr/penned choogling slow 113bpm thudder with occasional explosion effects and a possibly over-long plonking intro eases typically on 7:20 12in into their current repetitive laid back Chic/Sledge-style sound, though it lacks their hit touch.

AL WILSON: ‘Earthquake’ (from LP ‘Count The Days’, US Roadshow BXL-3215)
Soulful set’s hottest cut so far is this 6:00 unhurried walking bass-driven 115bpm clonker, but the melodic 6:08 title track (reminiscent of Ray Charles’s ‘Eleanor Rigby’) has an interestingly different tripping 125bpm thump rhythm and is also on beefier 12in (YD-11584).

MANDRE: ‘Spirit Groove’ (US Motown M00022D1)
Although the flip to ‘Swang’ on UK 12in, this 6:56 ‘You And I’-like 123bpm funk strutter is the US A-side choice, flipped in turn by the also strong (and popular here) 135bpm ‘Freakin’s Fine’ clapper which hits a jauntily jumping lick.

WHISPERS: ‘Can’t Do Without Love’ (US Solar YD-11592)
Pleasant if unexceptional 106bpm harmony soul shuffler on 5:22 12in.
