DAVID GRANT: ‘Love Will Find A Way’ (Chrysalis GRANX 3)
Attractive but very lightweight Galaxy-ish 121½bpm 12in pulsator full of soft mushy harmonies, breaking for nice walking bass and tinkling vibes towards the end — presumably he’ll have another video to help sell it (untitled on white label, the flip’s a different purposeful 114bpm instrumental).

MAJOR HARRIS: ‘All My Life’ (US Pop Art PA 1401)
Early ’70s instigator of that infamous soundtrack to a thousand seductions. ‘Love Won’t Let Me Wait‘, Major’s finally back on a happily jiggling lickety-spit 117½bpm 12in lurcher, sorta soulfully electro with supporting chicks cheerily chipping in and then taking over when the beat gets freakiest (dub/edit flip). Don’t get too excited, but it’s almost another ‘Love Town’.

THE ROCK STEADY CREW: ‘(Hey You) Rock Steady Crew’ (Charisma RSC 1-12)
The famous five break dancing b-boys (and one rather vocal girl) from ‘Flashdance’, the ‘Buffalo Gals’ video and (reputedly) ‘Wild Style!’ serve up their own Africa Islam-scratched backbeat smacking all-happening 0-115bpm 12in hip hopper in such a bright vocal style that it’s more a pop than street sound, and so should cross over fast (inst flip).

HAWKEYE: ‘All Systems Go’ (US Beantown Music BM08)
Dreadful male vocal doesn’t exactly help the two Morales & Munzibai-mixed vocal versions of this ponderous 103bpm slinker, but happily the 5-track 12in (dedicated to black astronaut Guion Bluford!) includes the killer ‘Cosmo Wyatt Dub Mix’ which gets all kinds of freaky following a “tracking station to Hawk Starship — you are now clear for takeoff” intro. This mix is full of funny voices and effects, and sets up a mesmeric beat — don’t pass it by.

ACTIVE FORCE: ‘Give Me Your Love’ (A&M AMSX 150)
Very good soulfully sung clippety clopping summer tempo 99bpm 12in jittery jogger with an almost Genesis-like “ha!” bit, by the here gruff guy-led new four chaps one chick vocal group, the lady singing lead on the flip’s Gladys Knight-ish slowly building stop-start 0-79bpm ‘My Sunshine‘.

LEW KIRTON: ‘Talk To Me’ (Epic TA 3805)
Huskily soulful Lew satisfyingly wails and worries a group-answered nagging title line repetition over a synthetic strings backed accelerating creamy 103(intro)/105-106-107bpm 12in jitter and wriggle, which makes memorable home listening too (inst flip).

GEORGE BENSON: ‘In Your Eyes’ (Warner Bros W9487T)
Tempoless started dead slow and deadly attractive 0-33½/67-0bpm pop MoR smoocher, on 3-track 12in with his delicate 34/68-0bpm ‘Being With You‘ and great old romping jazzy “live” 115-117-0bpm ‘Weekend In L.A.‘ guitar instrumentals.

MARY JANE GIRLS: ‘Boys’ (Gordy TMGT 1315)
Rick James-prod/penned amazingly bouncy yet sparse 122bpm ‘Candy Man’-type bubbly bounder, and indeed a 122bpm instrumental of that earlier hit is on 3-track 12in flip — as however is the record’s real attraction, the at last released 98bpm instrumental of ‘All Night Long’ . . . which actually sounds oddly empty now after La Famille.

UK PLAYERS: ‘You Make Me Feel’ (RCA RCAT 347)
Rather classy brisk Galaxy-ish 118bpm 12in canterer with soulful sharp harmony work, though maybe not enough of an edge to interest other than the already converted, flipped by the excellent jazzily textured 121bpm ‘Landslide‘ instrumental — all in all possibly the most impressive thing they’ve done, ever.

CANDY McKENZIE: ‘Remind Me’ (Intense INT010)
Patrice Rushen’s slowie given a jogging 90bpm 12in ‘Young Free And Single’ — style reggae-soul treatment with nice jazzy guitar and piccolo sax, the aptly-titled 92bpm ‘Different Style‘ instrumental flipside dub possibly being most atmospheric and cooking into some tasty gentle vibes. Ooh-ooh, this is good!

WEST STREET MOB: ‘Break Dancin’ — Electric Boogie’ (Sugarhill SHL 128)
With an odd “open” percussion sound but lotsa scratching and vocoder amongst all the disjointed 112bpm 12in activity, this isn’t as good as other scratchers like the B Boys or Motor City Crew but is different enough to stick out purely because of its naturalistic rather than electro rhythm (filler 118bpm inst flip).

RONNIE DYSON: ‘All Over Your Face’ (Atlantic B9841T)
Ingram Family-prod/penned electronically burbled oddball Moroder-ish 119bpm 12in pulsator with very soulful vocals creating a telling tension that’s already got to a lot of people on import, the Ingram-ish 126bpm ‘Don’t Need You Now‘ flip being more traditional.

MARCIA GRIFFITHS: ‘Electric Boogie’ (Island 121S 112)
Re-released in a new much more obviously open and less twee remix, this enjoyably sly catchy little simple sinuous 106¾bpm Bunny Wailer-produced/interjected gently electro jiggly weaver currently mash up several African nations and is once again here on a 5-track 12in in different dub variations.

BEVERLEY SKEETE: ‘If The Feeling Is Right’ (Elite DAZZ 21)
Atmosfear’s singer is Minnie Ripperton-ish on a jerkily lurching 108-109-108-109bpm 12in swayer with nice mellow sax breaks, which only the irritatingly angular structure prevents from being as completely pleasant as the other ingredients try to make it (radical dub ‘Get My Love’ / instrumental ‘Feeling Minus One’ versions on flip).

KEVIE KEV (WATERBED KEV): ‘All Night Long (Waterbed)’ (US Sugarhill SH-461)
After an offputting start to this 99bpm 12in rap treatment of the Mary Jane Girls tune things actually get better the longer it’s on, and you can at least chop into the “are you talkin’ to me?” where the song itself gets going. The flip’s instrumental percussive 111½bpm ‘Sweet Stuff‘ is kinda like a scratch-less West Street Mob meeting Positive Force’s partygoers.

THE RUSSELL BROTHERS: ‘The Party Scene’ (US Portrait 4RP-04086)
Stark electro beats and tones start getting quite hypnotic before the rapping brothers burst through to ride the 103½bpm rhythm, on 3-track 12in with instrumental and two vocal lengths, best for subtle mixers.

RON BANKS: ‘Truly Bad’ (US CBS Associated Records 4Z9 04143)
The Dramatics lightly whinnying singer dresses things in frantic sounding but empty 122bpm 12in electro trappings to disguise that basically he’s nicked the ‘Shake Your Body’ / ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ lick, which cuts through best on the vocodered instrumental flip.

C-BANK: ‘Get Wet’ (Elite US DAZZ 26)
Extremely specialist 118bpm 12in electro patterer with wailing women over stark hip hops and effects (inst/alternative vocal flip).

STEVE GRANT & TIGHT FIT: ‘Love The One You’re With’ (Jive JIVE T50)
Steve Stills oldie given a sorta pop-reggae-electro 0-101bpm treatment produced by Roy Carter, the 3-track 12in having an instrumental 99½bpm dub that could interest certain mixers.

SINITTA RENET: ‘Never Too Late’ (Midas 12SIN 1)
Evidently some famous chanteuse’s daughter (pronounced Sen-eater Re-nay) with an old fashioned somewhat limply spurting 115bpm 12in disco swayer currently on white label.

I LEVEL: ‘Stone Heart’ (Virgin VS 62612)
The now notorious floor-clearers began with so much promise that it’s sad to witness their decline with each successive release, this dreary lethargically sung electro-backed 117bpm 12in jerker only being saved on 2-track flip by its much more invigoratingly smacking stark 117bpm ‘The Wagon‘ instrumental dub version, and the quite reasonable tinny trumpet backed 78bpm reggae ‘Historical Nights‘ (in Ethiopia?!)

BILL SUMMERS & SUMMERS HEAT: ‘Tech No Bop’ (US MCA MCA-13974)
Freakily started but then disappointingly messy electro c.120bpm 12in hip hopper — except Bill’s own percussion stops it really matching that metronomic description.

GLORIA GAYNOR: ‘Love Me Real’ (Ecstasy XTCT 4)
Brassily braying urgent fast thudding 124-125-124½-124bpm 12in chugger set to an old Detroit Emeralds tempo.

ASHFORD & SIMPSON: ‘Side Effect’ (LP ‘High-Rise’ Capitol EST 7122821)
Disappointing set with only this chunkily rolling shrill 107bpm jiggly thumper having a relevant rhythm, even if like a soulful Bee Gees.

THE BEE GEES: ‘Someone Belonging To Someone’ (RSO RSOX 96)
Barry’s first breathily tremulous utterance on this sexy 62½bpm 12in smoocher has toe-curling shock impact and should sell it.

DIVINE: ‘Love Reaction’ (Design Communications DEST 4, via IDS)
The overweight transvestite’s rhythm box backed 126bpm 12in Boys Town canterer only gets vocal halfway (totally instrumental flip) and has stirred up most interest by being so like New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’ / ‘The Beach’.

KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND: ‘(You Said) You’d Gimme Some More’ (Epic EPC A 13 2760)
’60s bubblegum-style monotonous 129¼-130bpm 12in pop chugger (inst flip).

RANDY CRAWFORD: ‘Nightline’ (Warner Bros W9530T)
Randy’s had to go the awful fast “black rock” 0-144bpm 12in Ross/Shalamar/’Beat It’ route to try and dent the US market, where she still means nothing.

FRANK STALLONE: ‘Far From Over’ (RSO RSOX 95)
US-aimed ultra frantic 165bpm 12in “rock disco” Sembello-style stormer by Sylvester’s brother, from ‘Staying Alive’.

JEFFREY OSBORNE: ‘Other Side Of The Coin’ (LP ‘Stay With Me Tonight’ A&M AMLX 64940)
George Duke-produced set, not a patch on last year’s, his 12in being the only really danceable track although this throaty 104bpm blues jiggler could have possibilities, the staccato 120bpm title track, jerky 112bpm ‘Plane Love‘, ‘Car Wash’-ish 102bpm ‘When Are You Comin’ Back?‘ and rocky 128bpm ‘Two Wrongs Don’t Make A Right‘ being interspersed by particularly drippy slowies.

OLIVER CHEATHAM: ‘Just To Be With You’ (MCA MCAT-831)
Dave MacAleer remixed ponderous 104½bpm 12in jiggly jogger, flipped by the 121bpm ‘Make Your Mind Up‘ — why didn’t they go with ‘Bless The Ladies‘?

ADELE BERTEI: ‘Build Me A Bridge’ (Geffen TA 3675)
Thomas Dolby-produced chick wailed 115bpm 12in beefy bumper falling between several stools, being neither electro/soulful/exciting enough for Britain’s various disco markets (inst ‘Take It To The Bridge’ flip).

ARLANA: ‘You Can’t Keep Breaking My Heart’ (Hitman HM 002)
Chick sung loosely churning 117bpm 12in canterer in four versions, which earned brief interest on import during a lean week.

FONDA RAE: ‘Live It Up’ (US Posse POS 1210)
Dreadful raucous jerky c.120bpm 12in clanker, very KC ‘Give It Up’ with such a similar title phrase.

FIAT LUX: ‘Aqua Vitae’ (Polydor RATX 1)
Bill Nelson’s brother Ian plays sax in the spacey mix of this quite interesting instrumental 122bpm 12in electro-ish white boys jiggler.

BRIAN & ZAN: ‘Pump Your Body’ (Sound Of New York SNYL 5)
Rhythm box started squeakily sung dull 121½bpm 12in electro jitterer with bumbling bass adding a more fluid feel, the instrumental ‘Club Version’ flip getting most play.

BOBBY GILLIOM: ‘Gimme A Break’ (New York Connexion NYCX 101, via IDS)
Sly & Robbie-backed light voiced rapped/sung electro-ish 103bpm 12in bumper, dub flip credited to Clappa Club.

TREACHEROUS THREE: ‘Get Up’ (US Sugarhill SH-462)
Unattractive noisy staccato rap-chant c.108bpm 12in judderer.

PEECH BOYS: ‘On A Journey’ (Island 12IS 119)
Dull ponderous 107bpm 12in meanderer, 108bpm dub flip, drifting listlessly through different languages in an interesting concept that’s not fully realized.

MAYANA: ‘Skips A Beat (Dub)’ (Graffiti 12 GRAFT 2, via Pinnacle)
The dub version jittery jolting 118bpm instrumental on 3-track pop 12in has been getting some electro-ish mixer use up north.

DREAM MERCHANT: ‘As The World Turns’ (Legacy LGY T6, via IDS)
Brassy brittle squeaky EWF-ish brightly snapping 119bpm 12in strutter by UK-based American bassist Deon Estus, not quite what’s happening in black music right now (inst flip).

NINA SHAW: ‘Stop If You Love Me’ (Ecstasy XTCT 3)
Quite solidly jittering slow 93½bpm 12in jogger spoilt by awful Minnie Mouse vocals (inst flip).
