DAVID LASLEY: ‘Saved By Love’ (EMI America 12EA 179)
Strange but true — this falsetto-singing session man sang lead on Sister Sledge’s ‘We Are Family’ and Chic’s ‘Everybody Dance’! Officially A-side of his self-penned-Don Was (Not Was)-produced 3-track 12in, the 122bpm ‘Where Does That Boy Hang Out‘ sounds like Sylvester singing ‘I Heard It Through The Grapevine’ while the 186/93bpm ‘Next Time’ is a finger snappin’ Frankie Lymon-type ’50s doo-wop jumper (all kinda Billy Joel so far, huh?), but the big noise in soul circles is this excellent squeaky swaying lush 98bpm jogger with soaring sax and again an affectionate nod towards established styles. Hot on the grapevine for months, it’ll sell the record.

MTUME: ‘Prime Time’ (LP ‘You, Me And He’ US Epic FE 39473)
Infinitely better than their last LP and sure to reward repeated home listening, the truly mature set’s immediate dance hit is this superb rolling 109bpm ticker like ‘Juicy Fruit’ brought up to the hot tempo, while ‘C.O.D. (I’ll Deliver)‘ is another teetering suspenseful slow 93½bpm jolter modelled on that earlier classic, ‘You Are My Sunshine‘ an even more strung out 80bpm entwining smoocher, the title track single a terrific stripped down crawling 72bpm examination of a romantic triangle with a separate “I love another” conversation started and sweetly saxed 71½bpm ‘Sweet For You And Me (Monogamy Mix)‘ variation, leaving three funkier cuts in the starkly lurching choppy 99½bpm ‘I Simply Like‘, sax ‘n guitar jiggled instrumental (0-)121bpm ‘To Be Or Not To Bop That Is The Question‘, and loose 103bpm party burbler ‘Tie Me Up‘ which starts and ends with chatter and footsteps as they stroll over to Spooner’s Place to hear Mtume play!

THE STAPLE SINGERS: ‘Slippery People’ (US Private I Records 4Z9 05078)
The suddenly super-hot label’s latest smash is a superb brightly wriggling and whomping 107bpm rattling electro drums-driven trotter with slippery synth squiggles and Mavis leading the family in her usual vocal style like an infectious ‘Do The Do’ combining the modern with the old (inst flip).

CHUCK BROWN & THE SOUL SEARCHERS: ‘We Need Some Money’ (Master Mix 12CHE 8403)
Initially greeted with caution but now suddenly and deservedly massive, this dynamite prime example of Washington DC’s “go go” party funk is a gruffly chanted and brassily blown catchy 104-105-104½bpm jiggler plopped and popped by the style’s distinctive percussion beat — all of it real music rather than electro, yet the hardest hip hop you’ll find.

LaTOYA JACKSON: ‘Hot Potato’ (US Private I Records 4Z9 05074)
Now, this one really is good! Amir Bayyan-prod/Martinelli & Todd-mixed, it’s an exciting fast frisky ‘Dr Beat’/D Train-type 120½bpm leaper which bounds away from a scratching, barking and glass breaking intro without ever letting up (great episodic more electro dub flip too), guaranteed to put “sis” in the chart with her brothers.

THE S.O.S. BAND: ‘No One’s Gonna Love You’ (LP ‘Just The Way You Like It’ Dutch Tabu TAB 26058)
Epitomising their album-making approach with Change and Cherrelle, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis prod/penned four current formula songs leaving three to the group themselves — however, side one is a suite with surf effects linking this (0-)101½bpm hot tempo ticker and the 0-103bpm title track hit in a sandwich each side of the lovely slower 0-79bpm ‘Weekend Girl‘, which could end up the set’s real biggie. ‘Break Up‘ is a shrill electronically lurched strutter, the group maintaining the house style with the mellower 0-96bpm ‘Feeling‘, lush 68bpm ‘I Don’t Want Nobody Else‘, jerky rushed electro 125-0bpm ‘Body Break‘.

TERRI WELLS: ‘I’m Givin’ All My Love’ (US Philly World Records PWR-2020)
I’ve been driving around with her whole new Nick Martinelli-produced LP on test cassette for ages, impatiently awaiting vinyl release of this great bouncily trucking 107bpm backbeat-socking strutter which she soulfully growls ‘n wails in Aretha-ish style around some terrific interplay with her backing girls, who go “ah ooh” and “ah-ooh-ooh” in answer (joyously jangly piano inst flip).

LYDIA MURDOCK: ‘Love On The Line’ (WEA YZ17T)
A bit of a disaster on import months ago (surely in a different harsher mix?) but selling well now it’s out here, this rather abruptly starting mid-tempo powerfully rolling 96bpm jogger finds the ‘Superstar’ lady lamenting her man’s phone line always has a “busy” signal (inst flip). Kinda nagging the more you hear it.

TONY JACKSON: ‘Love Blind’ (Cedar 12CAG 2, via PRT)
Again rather rawly mixed, this infectiously swinging 0-114bpm wriggler has huskily soulful Tony moaning through a tasty short vibes break, which thankfully is expanded virtually to take over the dubwise flip.

GILBERTO GIL: ‘Toda Menina Baiana’ (WEA U 9451T)
Now picked up on by the fashion conscious although huge for ages at jazz gigs, this Portuguese sung and scatted purposefully jiggling 104-105-106-107bpm Brazilian jitterer is what Kid Creole would sound like were he hip! The 3-track 12in flip has the smoothly swinging 119bpm ‘Dono Do Pedaco‘ and frantic 117bpm ‘Samba De Los Angeles‘. Eso beso!

BRYAN LOREN: ‘Easier Said Than Done’ (Virgin VS 706-12)
Almost over-obviously remixed, this beefily lurching 118bpm Kashif-ish jolter on 3-track 12in is flipped by the ex-Cashmere “all his own work” 18 year-old’s original hit 120bpm ‘Lollipop Luv‘ and its US follow-up more sombrely thudding 109½bpm ‘Do You Really Love Me‘. If you’re into Kashif and Lillo you’ll love these.

RAY PARKER JR.: ‘Ghostbusters (Searchin’ For The Spirit)’ (Arista ARIST 12580)
The US number one pop smash from 1984’s biggest blockbuster movie is a catchily chugging 0-113bpm rock-funk strutter with Sweet-like chanted title line, obviously a gas in the film’s context and fine for truckin’ (114bpm inst dub flip), remixed for 12in by Martinelli & Todd.

EL CHICANO: ‘Let Me Dance With You’ (Streetwave MKHAN 24)
Another from CBS and hot still in London’s sweatier cellars, this you may remember is let down by some of the female vocal but is otherwise a great chunkily jogging 96bpm tugger with an instrumental that many prefer, now also flipped by their distinctive organ-backed attractive older 86bpm ‘Do You Want Me‘.

HERBIE HANCOCK: ‘People Are Changing’ (LP ‘Sound-System’ US Columbia FC 39478)
Let down by the dreadful 107bpm single ‘Hardrock‘, similar more metallic 107bpm ‘Metal Beat‘, juddering 107½bpm ‘Junku‘ and 111bpm title track (respectively lightened by ethnic African and Japanese instruments), which are far from being experimental future shocks as the underlying electro framework is now just ugly and dull, the set is saved by this Bernard Fowler-sung superb simple sparse buoyant 108¼bpm treatment of the typical Timmy Thomas tune, and — an unexpected bonus for jazz fans — the exciting complex 116-115bpm “real” afro-jazz piano instrumental ‘Karabali‘ with Daniel Ponce’s exotic time signature and Wayne Shorter’s soprano sax.

GAYLE ADAMS: ‘I’m Warning You’ (US Mainline ML-5002)
Welcome return of the unlikely jolting 107bpm rolling tripper on timeless soul disco style, now possibly a bit ponderous and unadventurous although certainly still solid sounding (inst/edit flip).

KLINTE JONES: ‘In The Heat (Of The Night)’ (Personal 12PER 104)
Forget the chirruping chix and gruff guy sung staccato 117bpm vocal, flip for the great organ led 116¼bpm skittering electro instrumental which synchs sensationally between Jermaine’s ‘Come To Me’ and Ollie & Jerry.

TEMPER: ‘No Favors’ (MCA MCAT 916)
Likewise, the stripped down 0-123-123⅔-123bpm John Hernandez-remixed Dub Version is frighteningly good out of Colonel Abrams and more useful here than the US-aimed confusingly introed jerky semi-electro 123⅓bpm vocal side.

GIL SCOTT-HERON: ‘Re-Ron’ (Arista ARIST 12573)
Bringing Boy George, Maggie Thatcher and more into his cast of characters, the thinking man’s rapper (really more a street poet) argues against President Ron re-running — all to a Bill Laswell-produced simple 104½bpm jittery judder, followed by a harder hip hop 104bpm here subtitled ‘Missing Brain Link‘ special mix and flipped by the older but similarly aimed conversationally talked then chanted long jazzy 0-95/47½bpm ‘“B” Movie‘.

NEVILLE BROTHERS: ‘Neville-ization’ LP (US Black Top BT-1031)
Aaron Neville and his brothers (basically the once rhythmically innovative Meters) were recorded live in their New Orleans home town at Tipitina’s two Septembers ago, and like Maze in that same crescent city the set’s an enduring pleasure for true soul afficionados. Southern Louisiana’s unofficial anthem, Aaron’s classic gut-snagging melismatic 58½-59½-0bpm ‘Tell It Like It Is’ joins Bobby Womack’s 88-90-92-0bpm ‘Woman’s Gotta Have It‘ as most current sounding dancers, while oldies like the 0-72½-72-0bpm ‘Fever‘ rub shoulders with typical jerky Meters rhythms and even Duke Ellington’s ‘Caravan‘.

FRANK SINATRA: L.A. Is My Lady’ LP (Qwest 925145-1)
The Quincy Jones-arranged/produced traditional set of swinging standards, well worth investigation by classier mobiles, features George Benson on Frank’s latest “city song”, the modern sounding 113-80-0bpm title track which still ends up in ‘New York, New York’ slowed down high kicking style . . . and in fact that hard-to-find classic has been shrink-wrapped with the 7in version (W 9223F)!

MIQUEL BROWN: ‘Black Leather’ (Record Shack SOHOT 27)
Prod/penned by Ian Levine & Fi Trench in their drama-laden style, the moodily introed 0-123bpm chuggingly rocking strider gets away from the usual Hi-NRG cliches (although there’s some ‘High Energy’ in it) while Ms Brown hollers up a hurricane, her LP’s lovely swinging ’60s-type 129bpm ‘Sunny Day‘ usefully being the flip.

SECESSION: ‘Fire Island’ (Beggars Banquet BEG 112T)
Emphatically thudding 137bpm electro bounder with some cooing chick, groaning chap and Frankie grunts, excitingly mixed by John Rocca and named for the Edinburgh gay club/notorious Long Island resort (inst flip).

THE BOLLOCK BROTHERS: ‘The Prince And The Showgirl’ (InDisc DID 127700)
Frankie tempoed 130bpm jaunty galloper alluding in punk-ish accent to Andy ‘n Koo and Jack ‘n Marilyn (in three variations), sure to be banned . . . they hope?

D.A. WILLIAMS: ‘Make You Happy’ (Nu-Disk WIL 121, via Pinnacle)
Paul Brett’s label debuts with a pleasant late ’70s-style 126bpm disco canterer soulfully sung by this Nottingham lad.

LORNA: ‘Where The Boys Are’ (Epic A4472)
Judy Garland’s other daughter, Lorna Luft revives the remade Connie Francis movie theme as a hoarsely sung 141bpm galloper, sorta Bonnie Tyler goes Northern Soul, seemingly only on 7in.

LIFE FORCE: ‘Invitation (Remix)’ (Polo POLO 1234)
Frantically rattling. 134bpm remix of the Liquid Gold-type galloper, getting a cool reception from many influential jocks for being unnecessary/too early.

P.P. ARNOLD: ‘Electric Dreams’ (10 Records TEN 29-12)
Don Was (Not Was)-produced but messily limp skittering 0-132bpm movie tune (in three versions) co-penned by Boy George and sung by the ’60s-vintage ex-Ikette.
