ALAN JONES had done the chart, I had left the space, nobody else knew anything about it — consequently, the Pop Dance chart did not make its debut here last week, although right now it should be along with the Black Dance and Hi-NRG ones in the main charts section! … Phil Harding did the PWL Mix of Sybil ‘My Love Is Guaranteed’, but he and Pete Waterman have already created yet another totally different 118⅓bpm Red Ink Mix (Champion CHAMPR 1255), based unbelievably — in the most brazen scam to date — on the only just released M|A|R|R|S ‘Pump Up The Volume’, copying its beefy bounce and with a more houseified instrumental Part 2 … Phil Harding, having also turned the Two Grooves Under One Nation Remix of Mel & Kim ‘FLM’ into a mixture of ‘Jack Your Body/Do It Properly’ and ‘Le Freak’ (the flip’s a useful 121¾bpm instrumental dub of the remix, incidentally), has now given the same treatment actually to Chic ‘Le Freak’, making a 120⅓-120-120¼-121-120¾bpm ‘Jack Le Freak’ mix that includes some Mel & Kim and unfortunately is only on WEA promo! … Mike Allen has turned up at London’s “talk” station, LBC, hosting a weeknight phone-in plus (now that the station has a music licence) a Sunday 3-5pm hip hop show which will regularly feature world mixing champion Chad Jackson – meanwhile, another long established black music presenter at Capital Radio seems likely to be moving on, as well … Jeff Young is indeed moving to bigger (and, hopefully, better) radio employment … BBC Radio 1 apparently is planning to increase its coverage of “dance music”, with programmes on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings from next month, prior to the October start of full FM transmission (at first just in the South and Scotland, other areas following as wavelengths are allocated) … Chris Hill has a weekly Saturday 8-11pm show on the new Radio 107 – in Hamburg, Germany! PRIVATE PARTY ‘Tennents’ (IMW 1201, via Red Rhino/Cartel)
Londoners PJ Tickle and Smiley C rap the praises of their favourite brew with such as the Seven Dwarfs scratched into the 98⅓bpm jitter by Scratch Master Dr K (centre, below), while Thunderbirds and Muppets make the 107⅚bpm ‘Puppet Capers‘ flip even more fun, for a wide audience (though maybe not so much for the floor). This is the first release from Islington Music Workshop’s co-operative community label. They seem to mean business!

FRESH GORDON ‘Feelin’ James’ (US Tommy Boy TB 901)
An American ‘Roadblock’, this sinuously jiggly 97bpm funk half-stepper continuously cuts in sampled grunts and phrases by James Brown, and “you got it” from Bobby Byrd’s ‘I Know You Got Soul’ (edit too), flipped by the more routinely rapped ‘n scratched jittery 96½bpm ‘I Believe In Music’ with ‘The Champ’ amongst its beats.

LONGSY D. AND CUT MASTER M.C. ‘Hip Hop Reggae’ (Big One VV Big 5)
Taking over as the definitive hip hop reggae fusion and fun enough to be a crossover smash too, this jerkily jumping 90½-90⅓bpm delight combines rapping, toasting, scratching, rare grooves, Bobby Byrd, The Mohawks, and an ace Delroy Wilson rhythm (instrumental 90⅓bpm PA Version, emptier 90bpm Original, sparse 90⅙bpm Beats).

M|A|R|R|S ‘Pump Up The Volume’ (4AD BAD 707)
Having built such a buzz on promo that it’s even been copied in the latest Sybil remix (see Odds ‘n’ Bods) before it came out, this bass bounced vigorously pounding ominous 112¾bpm jittery groove in the Criminal Element Orchestra mould is the work of Colourbox and A R Kane members with rare groove beats and scratching by CJ Mackintosh and Dave Dorrell. A sizzler!

COLDCUT featuring FLOORMASTER SQUEEZE ‘Beats + Pieces’ (Ahead Of Our Time AHED 1201)
Cold cutters Matt Black and Jonathan More kick off their own label with a massive 104-103½-0bpm scratch that chucks Vivaldi and Dr Who in with James Brown, Ted Nugent, and a whole lot more in a blazing display (bare 0-103½-103⅚bpm beats flip). Say kids, what time is it?

D.J. SHORT & MAX ZEKE ‘My Phone’ (US Hechomance Records HE 101)
Going the whole hog, James Brown’s ‘Sex Machine’ is the beat dropped in behind this consequently slightly strong jittery 101½bpm rap ‘n scratch (inst flip).

SPANISH PRINCE ‘Dance Everybody Dance’ (US 4th + B’way BWAY-442)
Drily jittering 0-100⅚bpm rap with old fashioned “whoa-oh” chants and cut-ins of the Jackson 5’s currently rare groove-revived ‘I Want You Back’ (can a national number two hit be considered “rare”?), flipped by the gentler jiggling 0-98½bpm ‘Maria’, both sides in three mixes.

INTRIGUE ‘Together Forever’ (US Cooltempo 4V9 43140)
The pedigree of this ‘Fly Girl’-ish cool wriggle shuffling (0-)107½bpm jiggler, soulfully sung with rich harmony support, becomes even more apparent when you see it’s written by Leroy Burgess & Sonny Davenport, produced by Allen George & Fred McFarlane, mixed by Timmy Regisford & Mario Salvati (dub/edit flip).

CHERYL GLASGOW ‘Glued To The Spot’ (Live Records ALIVE T-5, via Jet Star)
The Haringey social worker’s enchanting shuffling 106-106⅓bpm samba from earlier in the spring has been remixed and re-released for a deserved second shot, and is already all over London’s radio.

JOHNNY HATES JAZZ ‘I Don’t Want To Be A Hero’ (Virgin VST 1000)
Excellent tightly lurching 112½bpm blue eyed soul loper with more than a hint of Chic’s ‘Good Times’ rhythm, so good that I for one won’t resent it hitting the Black Dance chart!

WAX MASTER TOREY ‘Pop Sax’ (US B Boy Records BB 4725)
Coming as a welcome relief from an unexpected quarter, this terrific simple lightly jiggling 105¼bpm jazzy sax and keyboards instrumental is on the flip of the stark juddery fast-talking 93-0bpm ‘Duck Season’ rap (inst too).

DALIS ‘Rock Steady’ (US Trax Records TX144)
Aretha Franklin’s oldie goes “house” in a brassily bounding frantic rattling 119¾-119⅔-119½-119⅓-119¼-119bpm vocal revival (edit too), far hotter provincially than in London where it’s been all but ignored, although the flip’s 119⅔-119¼-118¾-118⅔bpm instrumental is really exciting with snarling and honking sax creating almost ‘Do It Properly’-like intensity, well worth hearing.

THOMPSON & LENOIR ‘Can’t Stop The House’ (US House Records HJA 870001)
Adonis-produced nervily skittering jumpy 123⅓bpm jack track bubbler (in three mixes), sung and chanted on occasion by Kenya Lenoir and Brenda Parker, one of the girls pledging allegiance “to the house groove” in the same speaking style as on the Flying Lizards’ ‘Money’.

REESE & SANTONIO ‘How To Play Our Music’ (US KMS 010)
Frantically bounding hi-hat hissed 126⅔bpm exciting jack track rattler in dub and bonus beat versions, actually flip to (but the side that’s selling) the more blandly bubbling boring instrumental 118⅔bpm ‘The Sound (Smoothe Mix)’.

PAULI CARMAN ‘In The Heat Of The Night’ (US Columbia 44 06873)
Following a standard format maybe but very well done, this instantly familiar-seeming 102bpm jogger strolls classily along with subdued sax and synthetic twiddles meshing around the calmly impassioned vocal (instrumental flip), no sweat being raised despite the title.

MASON ‘Pour It On’ (US Elektra 0-66795)
Although previously the UK flip of ‘Double-X-Posure’, the Oklahoman brothers’ slick canterer has now been remixed five ways: the Club Mix is a jiggling (0-)113½bpm backbeat lurcher with a similar 113½bpm Dubstramental, more interesting being the stuttery 113½bpm Naked House Mix, creamily loping 113⅓-0bpm Creamy House Mix with digital chipmunks and some Latin piano, and even more house-type (0-)113½bpm Dreamy House Dub.

EMANON ‘Fresh Beats’ (Urban URBX 9)
Africa Islam-produced incredibly jaunty mixture of scratching 101⅚-0bpm go-go beats, excitable chatter, dry comments, fierce brassy blasts, and a little girl piping up with a catchy paraphrase of ‘Nick Nack Paddywack’ (edit and beats too, plus the ponderously thudding 90½bpm dub version of ‘Susie’, which starts in a fairground setting).

PRIME TIME ‘He’s Def’ (US Sun Town STPT 712)
MC Run Du raps in praise of his scratching DJ Slic Vic, who kicks off with ‘Dance To The Drummer’s Beat’ before graduating to ‘Funkin’ For Jamaica’ and others in a tight 108½-0bpm jittery mix, followed by the similarly def 105¼bpm ‘So Damn Tough’ (instrumentals too). The guy can scratch.

VARIOUS ‘London Beats Vol. 1’ (MJ 001)
Thoroughly dodgy 33⅓rpm white label containing two scratched and mixed medleys, of various murky rare grooves including a fair amount of JBs, side one at 0-102-103-103¼-103⅓-0bpm and the more upbeat flip at 100-100¼-100⅓bpm.

KAY GEE THE ALL featuring D.J. DREW ‘My Record Is Hot’ (US B Boy Records BB 600)
Slinkily tugging 91bpm tricky transformer scratch of a JB riff behind bursts of grugg rap, ‘Honky Tonk Woman’ sneaking in the similar 90bpm ‘When No One Cares’, other rock stuff in the 92bpm ‘Big Beat’, while the rolling jaunty 92-0bpm ‘She’s A Dog’ is a complete rap.

BIG DADDY KANE ‘Get Into It’ (US Prism PS 2011)
Marley Marl-produced very Eric B & Rakim-like jerkily offbeat 98bpm rap ‘n’ rare groove funk scratch using Bobby Byrd’s “get into it” (instrumental too), flipped by the transformer-stuttered rolling 92⅓-0bpm ‘Somethin’ Funky’ and its 0-92⅚bpm ‘Just Rhymin’ With Biz’ continuation.

HERB ALPERT ‘Making Love In The Rain’ (Breakout USAT 608)
His album’s remaining track with Janet Jackson’s vocal assistance, this thunder and storm outro-ed 40/80¼-0bpm slow slinky smoocher (instrumental too) is flipped by a 102…114bpm megamix of ‘Rise/Rotation/Red Hot/Keep Your Eye On Me/Diamonds’ created by Paul Dakeyne using CDs and Technics vari-speed SLP 1200 CD players.

MINT JULEPS ‘Girl To The Power Of 6’ (Stiff BUYIT 263)
The singing sisterhood now try their hand at rapping and scratching too on a Trevor Horn-produced pleasant swaying 0-90bpm tugger, like a slower Mary Jane Girls ‘All Night Long’ in tempo (useful dub/inst).

PRINCE BUSTER ‘Al Capone (Scratch Remix ’87)’ (Spartan SP 12150/2)
Well away from current rhythms and probably too confused for dancing but great gimmicky listening, this cleverly multi-layered 119½-117¾-118-0bpm violent scratch-up by Roger Johnson of not only ‘Al Capone’ but also many other late Sixties ska hits is a brilliantly executed blend of styles ancient and modern that by rights you may think incompatible. It’s a damn sight cleverer than all the currently prevalent “rare groove” scratch mixes, and should be heard.

ZUICE ‘I’m A Survivor’ (Club JAB 56)
Lenny White-produced brightly jumping girl-sung galloping jitterer with perhaps more production technique than actual charm, in 115¼bpm UK and 115bpm US Mixes (dub/edit too), breezy enough as black pop goes.

TROUBLE FUNK ‘Trouble’ (Fourth & Broadway 12BRW 74)
P’funk meets go-go percussion in a Bootsy Collins-produced chanting bubbly (0-)106⅓-106½bpm groove that gets friskier the longer it rambles along (and funkier than the similarly conceived current Well Red).
