ODDS ‘N’ BODS
Steve Walsh’s old mate CJ Carlos looks like being the next London DJ to make his vinyl debut as a vocalist – Steve, incidentally, has now beaten Chris Hill’s chart peak of number 10 (reached twice by Chris, with ‘Renta Santa’), the previous biggest vocal hits by a UK disco DJ … Master Mix label owner Lewis Hayes points out it was the agreement between ‘Top Of The Pops’ and Equity (rather than the Musicians Union) which enabled Equity member Steve Walsh to leapfrog ahead of the higher placed Fatback in appearing on the programme, but now, despite the change in their line-up, Fatback too have appeared on the show … M|A|R|R|S’s so effective exotically Eastern-sounding female singing halfway through the remix turns out apparently to be Turkish … London Weekend Television’s Thru To 6 service a couple of Sundays ago, presumably by mistake, played the whole of the original mix of ‘Pump Up The Volume’ at 33⅓rpm instead of 45rpm, and it sounded good! … Criminal Element Orchestra’s drum thrashed ‘Put The Needle To The Record’ is now also in a 116bpm New Vocal Remix (Cooltempo COOLR 150), with a falsetto fellah ramblingly wailing through it, some Michael Jackson muttering, and an “I am the god of hellfire” drop-in from The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, plus a New Dub Version … 1980’s punchily loping Mystic Merlin ‘Mr Magician’, newly added to the B-side of its singer Freddie Jackson’s current 12 inch, is 113⅓-112⅓-111¾–113¼-113(break)-114¼bpm … Sherrick’s pleasantly swaying wriggly (0-)111bpm Extended Dance Remix of ‘Let’s Be Lovers Tonight’ has finally been elevated to A-side status, but oddly on promo only so far, in a denser and brighter 99¼bpm Extra Beat Boys Remix (RCA PT 41498R) … Champion have promoed, months ahead of eventual release, the previously Eurobeat-associated Paul Rein’s slow but bouncily lurching jittery 89⅓-0bpm ‘Stop’, with a trendy A-side mix by Phil Harding … Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam’s US chart-topping delightful evocation of the early Sixties vocal group sound, ‘Lost In Emotion’ is on 12-inch in a richly harmonised 119⅓-0bpm Full Force Remix, with vintage sax by Sidney Philips … Paul Barry’s ‘Complicated’ has been improved by a new livelier, rhythmically ‘Pump Up The Volume’-ish, 109⅓-0bpm Reconstruction Mix (MCA Records COMX 1) … Glen Goldsmith will be in an even harder second remix, too … DJs buying Blue Mercedes should note that the actual hot mixes are still, at the time of writing, only on promo, the Get Busy Yo! Mix and Street Latin Woolf Mix – this latter not to be confused (check the spelling very carefully) with the commercially released Street Latin Wolff Mix, of which the B-side Daktari Mix is indeed OK, and the vocal basis of the edited instrumental Get Busy Yo! Mix (it’s all a dastardly marketing ploy) … UK pressings on Sure Delight of the already reviewed Spoonie Gee ‘The Godfather’ turn out to be somewhat faster, at 106¼-106½bpm … Zuzan ‘Girls Can Jak Too’ has in fact been picked up for release next week by Serious Records, with the same ZANT 1 catalogue number … BBC Radio 1 starts its stereo 104.8FM transmission in the Greater London area on October 31, at 6am … I must say the Sunday broadcast of the brand new Gallup chart, before anyone anywhere knows what’s in it, has made it really exciting … Dave Pearce was doing the afternoon soul show again on Radio London, unfortunately just for the one week, good listening while it lasted … John Sachs is sounding tougher in the mid-morning slot on Capital Radio now, although it’s Kid Jensen in the evening who’s being given good toons to play … London jazz jocks Baz Fe Jazz (currently doing gigs in Korea and Japan for four weeks!) and Gilles Peterson are spearheading the upcoming release through Ace Records of the entire jazz catalogue of such US labels as Fantasy, Prestige, Riverside, Milestone … Charly Records have just issued all 15 of the New Orleans-recorded 1961-2 tracks by General Johnson’s original group, The Showmen, including of course the classic ‘It Will Stand’, on the LP ‘Some Folks Don’t Understand It’ (Charly/R&B CRB 1165) – now those are rare grooves! … Guy Carlton is expanding the mailing list at Secret Promotions, 83 Clerkenwell Road, London EC1 … Simon Dunmore, weekly on Wednesdays at Uxbridge’s The Villa, joins Clinton Cambridge and Les Fisher in taking the Rhythm Zone to Ealing’s Luckys wine bar this Tuesday (October 20), and then the third Tuesday of every month … The Whispers, amazingly in their first ever UK concert visit, are at Manchester’s Apollo Theatre this Wednesday (21), followed by the next three nights (23-25) at London’s Hammersmith Odeon … Danny Smith heads a ‘Home Boy Caister Warm-Up’ this Thursday (22) at Great Yarmouth’s The Brunswick in King Street … Chris Bangs guests next Tuesday (27) with Steve Aspey at Oxford’s Parkers, St Clements … Gullivers needs extra soundproofing at its new Soho site, where it should now be opening on November 14 … Graham Gold points out that the Barbara Mason tracks reviewed last week were on a 1980 album (something else that’s hard to tell from a white label!) … Bob Swift of Wickford’s Phaze 4 Disco Roadshow has practical experience of the recently mentioned Harris SP12 mixer, saying that the built-in BPM counter is “very suspect”, and that further modification was needed to the inputs so that he could use jingles at the same time as crossfading between turntables … US soul group Mission have had to be called Mission USA here, presumably so as not to clash with The Mission … Eon Irving, a mine of info following his New York visit, reveals that the source of certain current hip hop terminology may be traceable to legendary radio DJ Mr Magic, who, on his twice weekly WBLS rap show, greets listeners as “all you fly girls and fly guys” and “troopers and troopettes”, while various areas get called “the Boogie Down Bronx”, “Moneymakin’ Manhattan’, “Moneyearnin’ Mount Vernon” – that last upstate location’s tag being the title of a current Heavy D and the Boyz track … Wax Master Torey ‘Pop Sax’ is at least playlisted on New York radio WNYU, about the only action it’s had anywhere – which is a pity, as it struck me as being rather good … DON’T STOP JAMMIN’!
ANIELA has finally met up with ALAN COULTHARD, and compared notes. As previously mentioned, Alan came from Cardiff to study law at the University Of London while mixing in the evenings at Le Beat Route (subsequently he helped found the Disco Mix Club, and is now a barrister), whereas Aniela used to mix at Le Beat Route and has just gone to University College, Cardiff, to study law — and she will also be mixing at the local Ritzy, in one hour guest spots most Fridays, Saturdays and (the upfront night) Mondays! What’s more, her Students Union has such a flourishing soul club that it’s even getting Alexander O’Neal for a gig, so whether Aniela will ever actually do any studying seems doubtful!
HOT VINYL
ERIC B & RAKIM ‘Paid In Full (Seven Minutes Of Madness – The Coldcut Remix)’ (Fourth & Broadway 12BRC 78)
Already massive on white label, Matt Black + the Coldcut Crew’s brilliant (0-)98bpm remix of the burbling rap uses all sorts of terrific overlays before finally getting to Eric B, whose originally hot enough, Dennis Edwards borrowing, conversational 98⅔bpm Album Mix is now the flip, along with the juddery scratching 0-99⅔-0bpm ‘Eric B Is On The Cut’.
AUDREY WHEELER ‘Irresistible’ (Capitol 12CL 471)
Starting with a sneaky reference to Whitney Houston before hitting its own groove, this sinuously wailed soulfully weaving 109bpm jogger has a beefy bassline and backbeat (inst/edit flip), which should now help it build on its initial import success.
MISSION USA ‘Show A Little Love’ (CBS 651222 6)
Nick Martinell-produced extremely strong ‘Casanova’-ish bouncily breezy 95⅙bpm soulful jiggly jogger (edit too, and similarly syncopated 104⅙bpm ‘Sensuous Mood’), hot already on import.
SOCIETY ‘Love It (A Coldcut Mix)’ (Big Life BLR 1TCC, via Rough Trade/Cartel)
Apparently only for export to the US at the moment, although in a proper UK pressing which may be found by some, this is yet another brilliant creation from Matt Black + the Coldcut Crew, laying spoken statements and other effects, riffs and bits over a chugging 0-113bpm chanter that in its original 112½bpm Walters Mix B-side is nothing like so exciting.
TOTAL CONTRAST ‘Kiss’ (London LONX 155)
Infectiously jittering staccato 117⅙bpm funk chanter, hitting a percussively pattering groove with more “street cred” than their last one (in three mixes).
THE BIG X CREWE ‘Beverly Hills Cops (House Groove)’ (Uptown Records 12UTR5, via PRT)
Very useful 0-121¼bpm house treatment of Harold Faltermeyer’s ‘Axel F’, with a shorter 121bpm Jack Piano Mix too, a likely pop crossover.
MIRAGE ‘Jack Mix IV’ (Debut DEBTX 3035)
Leading “soundalike” producer Nigel Wright reverts to his ‘Jack Mix’ format for another pop-aimed 119½bpm medley of recent hits, this one mixing up remakes of ‘Pump Up The Volume/Le Freak/FLM/Oops Upside Your Head/My Love Is Guaranteed/Put The Needle To The Record/House Nation/Toy Boy/Call Me’, with Nigel Stock’s own amusingly titled 0-124bpm ‘Here It Is Get Into It!’ jack track as flip.
VARIOUS ARTISTS ‘The House Sound Of Chicago Megamix – Volume 2’ (German DJ International Records/BCM Records DJ 33-1014-45)
The latest in a steadily improving stream of house mastermixes by ‘Mic Mac’ Meyers medleys together some of the less obvious jack trax in four different ways, 0-120⅓-120¼-120½-121⅓-121⅔bpm ‘The Classix Mix’, 121⅓-122bpm ‘The Rare Groove Mix’ (don’t get too excited, that means stuff by Shawn Christopher, Arrogance, etc!), 121⅓-121½-0bpm ‘The Chillin’ Jack Mix’, 120¼-121⅔-0bpm ‘The Radio Edit’.
LEVERT ‘(Pop, Pop, Pop, Pop) Goes My Mind’ (Atlantic A8389TE)
Reissued lovely delicate then searing 0-80/40bpm slinky soul slowie building impassionedly to a terrific gut-wrenching semi-acappella climax, their previous big US hit before ‘Casanova’, flipped by the rolling 99⅙bpm ‘Looking For Love’ and ponderously jolting (0-)103bpm ‘Fascination’.
EARTH WIND & FIRE ‘Writing On The Wall’ (CBS EWF 1)
Typically squeaky lead-swapping pleasant Preston Glass-produced tumblingly driven 111-0bpm tapping soul roller, only on seven inch as the flip to – and much better than – the otherwise 12-inched though far less interesting ‘System Of Survival’, a fast (in this edited version, 0-121-0bpm) jerky chanter with “newsreader” statements.
TONY TERRY ‘She’s Fly’ (Epic TONY T1)
Jauntily go-go-tempoed good jumpy little 99⅔bpm funk jiggler (dub flip), warm while on import.
KEVIN IRVING ‘Children Of The Night’ (US Trax Records TX 145)
Plaintively sung naggingly haunting moody 117⅓-117-0bpm rumbler with a see-sawing bass line reminiscent of Elvis Presley’s ‘Suspicion’, a well sung proper song rather than a jack track (Radio Edit, and Frankie Knuckles-mixed longer 116¾-115¾bpm vocal Dub too).
BOBBY WOMACK ‘Living In A Box (Paradise Mix)’ (US MCA Records MCA-23795)
Strangely delayed and somewhat disappointing 116¾bpm cover version of the song for which, in its original hit version, Living In A Box actually copied Womack’s vocal sound (inst/edit flip).
KENNY G ‘Don’t Make Me Wait For Love’ (Arista RIST 37)
Lenny Williams-sung surging (0-)84bpm sweet slowie, a nice enough soul smoocher, flipped by the saxist’s older instrumental 39¾bpm ‘Japan’ and 27¾bpm ‘Virgin Island’.
RHYTHIM IS RHYTHIM ‘Strings’ (US Transmat MS 004)
Five strange fast instrumental grooves for house fanatics, the skittery pounding 125bpm ‘Strings (Flam-Boy-Ant Mix)’, hollow-sounding “sizzling” 134-133½bpm ‘Strings Of Life’, an uncredited percussive 125¾bpm bonus, exciting jaggedly flying 128bpm ‘Move It (Remix)’, and piano rumbled 122bpm ‘Kaos (Juice Bar Mix)’.
LA LA ‘We’ll Keep Striving (Extended Remix)’ (Arista RIST 40)
Unlikely to mean much outside London, this sombre moodily wriggling 103⅚bpm complex jerky jogger has co-writer Bernard Wright as a husky duettist, and an exotically tinkling break, good of its specialist soul type. The flip reprises her Full Force-created breezily jolting Janet-ish (0-)115-0bpm ‘My Love Is On The Money’ debut, and the sweetly doodling 82/41 bpm ‘So Into Love’.
LI’L LOUIS ‘Frequency’ (US Dance Mania Records DM-008)
Sparsely pulsing (0-)124bpm frisky jack track with that distinctive ‘Washing Machine’-type hollow “drain”-like synth sound (beats too), flipped by the bottle-clonking instrumental 123½-0bpm ‘How I Feel’.
VILLAGE DJ TRAC SERIES PT. 1 ‘Work Me Trax For Djs’ (US Music Village Records MV-0034)
With Joe Rodriguez credited as executive producer (presumably the World Disco Mix runner-up), these five percussive instrumental rhythm tracks are aimed primarily at mixing jocks, the M|A|R|R|S-ish drumkit driven 120¼-0bpm ‘Loft Groove’ and 125½bpm ‘Village Vibes (Mix Me Trac)’, sparser 118bpm ‘House Me Mix’, 117¾bpm ‘Street Me Mix’, 116¾bpm ‘Anything U Want Mix’.
ALEEM FEATURING LEROY BURGESS ‘Love Shock’ (US Atlantic 0-86661)
Jaggedly urgent 118¼bpm funk smacker, very routine with surface excitement, charting now weeks after it came in on import purely because WEA have mailed it to jocks.
BRICKHOUSE ‘We’ (Independent Records INDY 1)
Well made but dated spurting wriggly 117⅓bpm Britfunk protest song (inst/edit flip), not the rhythm of the moment – which may be why these Londoners had to release it themselves in the face of indifference from major labels, although now it’s been picked up by Westside Records, who will add a remix.
TAKE TWO ‘Badder Than Bad’ (Extra 12EXTRA 2, via EMI)
Newly recorded (rather than sampled) 116¼-115⅔bpm combination of ‘Pump Up The Volume’ and ‘Bad’, a good idea let down by its awful squawking female vocal and total lack of street smarts.
JAILBAIT ‘Be The One’ (US Atlantic 0-86660)
Yet more lightweight pop-aimed jittery 0-119¾-0bpm shrill pubescent female squawking to fuel America’s return to a modern (though less memorable) equivalent of the early Sixties girl group sound.
AMORETTO ‘Clave Rocks’ (US PKO Records KO-003)
Due here too, soon (A1 Records A1 300), this excitable girl-squawked spurtingly rambling 115½-0bpm Miami disco jitterer is very much at the purer Latin end of the “Hispanic Hip Hop” genre that’s all the rage now Stateside (where, unlike here, there’s a large Hispanic population who can relate to it).
SMOKEY ROBINSON ‘One Heartbeat’ (Motown ZT 41526)
Innocuously drifting 89bpm radio swayer with what sounds like Kenny G’s sax.
THERESA ‘Last Time (Remix)’ (US RCA 6489-1-RD)
Plaintive girl sung (although the act’s a girl/guy duo) jerkily lurching Janet Jackson meets Club Nouveau-ish 110bpm jiggler co-created in fact by Club Nouveau’s Jay King (in three versions).
THE WILD BUNCH ‘Tearin’ Down The Avenue’ (US 4th + B’way BWAY-446)
Although out in the States first, this monotonously chugging 93⅔bpm rap is by a British crew from Bristol (inst/break too, plus a strange Shara-keened sparse 87bpm reading of ‘The Look Of Love’).

I don’t suppose that anybody at the time would have pegged ‘Strings Of Life’ as one of 1987’s most perennially enduring all-time dance classics; indeed, it wasn’t even the lead track on the original release, that honour falling instead to the less remembered ‘Strings (Flam-Boy-Ant Mix)’.
You could make a case for Li’l Louis ‘Frequency’ as the second new track of the acid house era to land – but then again, as James observes, it’s derived more from ‘Washing Machine’ than ‘Acid Trax’ (ie. it gurgles more than it squiggles, if we’re splitting hairs here).
The rough YouTube recording of The Wild Bunch ‘Tearin’ Down The Avenue’ is sadly the only one out there, and copies are currently changing hands for an average of £200 on Discogs (so well done to you at home if you bought that, as Richard Osman would say). A trio at the time of its release, with Shara Nelson guesting on ‘The Look Of Love’, two members would go on to much greater success: Nellee Hooper as a producer, and Grant Marshall, aka Daddy G, as part of Massive Attack.
Coldcut’s overhaul of ‘Love It’ masks an unlikely source: Society were actually a short-lived offshoot of a recently disbanded goth band, Danse Society.
James will correct his Chris Hill boob the following week: ‘Renta Santa’ only charted once, and ‘Bionic Santa’ reached the same chart position a year later.

It’s amazing how quickly things develop – rare groove had only been named in print a few (3 or 4?) months ago and already last week we saw a German mix record including a ‘rare groove’ mix.
And at the other end of the scale I can’t believe that only now is the Fatback Band’s “I Found Lovin'” reaching its highest crossover point – it was originally released in 1983 and already big in London in 1984. And here we are in late 1987 (4 years later) with it finally making it onto Top Of The Pops – and after Steve Walsh’s version!
