ODDS ‘N’ BODS
Les Adams, none other than the LA Mix man himself, has done a “heavy, heavy” remix of Montana Sextet’s ‘Heavy Vibes’, for future creative marketing … Sybil is still “pumping up the volume” in the exciting brand new 0-118-0bpm Z Mix, by the Extra Beat Boys and Phil Harding, of the relaunched ‘My Love Is Guaranteed’ (Champion CHAMPZ 12-55), with an orgasmic “jungle fever” finish … Blue Mercedes have themselves had to point out that, different spellings apart, the two Street Latin Woolf and Street Latin Wolff Mixes are actually one and the same, a fact that was obscured in direct comparison between the two promo copies as, of course, the original pressing of ‘I Want To Be Your Property’ had its labels stuck on the wrong sides! … I wish some people would put their minds into gear and think at the same time as they read this column: nowhere did I say that I refuse to review all EMI releases, just those of their advance promos which contain only one song, as invariably the finished commercial pressings (the ones I will be reviewing) turn out to have different BPMs or contain extra tracks that are worth mentioning too, and doing so after already reviewing the A-side just gets clumsy and clutters up this Odds ‘n’ Bods section – don’t you agree? … Meli’sa Morgan’s UK pressing later this month will include ‘Fools Paradise’ and, hopefully, Hi-Fashion’s old ‘Feeling Lucky Lately’ (on which she sang) … Pete Hammond and Pete Waterman have remixed Audrey Wheeler ‘Irresistible’, and the Cookie Crew, finally out after months on promo, already has a remix due too … CBS, as mentioned last week, omitted from initial UK pressings the import’s much more exciting House Party Mix of Earth Wind & Fire’s ‘System Of Survival’, but have already white labelled this violently snapping 120½-0bpm version (now subtitled ‘Everybody Get Up’) as the A-side of a pressing that presumably is due for creative marketing (CBS EWFQT 1) … Jan Hammer ‘Crockett’s Theme’ has been beefed up considerably for dancefloors by Ben Liebrand in a thudding 95½-0bpm Dance Remix (MCA Records MCAX 1193) … Jellybean’s new 114⅓-0bpm remix of ‘The Real Thing’ is now in a UK pressing (Chrysalis BEANX 1-1) but apparently is only due commercially, with the flip’s Hot Salsa Dub too, as part of the imminent UK release of his Elisa Fiorillo-sung ‘Who Found Who’ US pop hit … Wayne Hernandez ‘Corners Of The Sun’ has been given a lavatory flush-introed brassy loud (0-)109-0bpm Mans Room Mix (Epic WAYNE Q2) … Breakout finally picked up Wally Jump Jr & The Criminal Element ‘Tighten Up/I Just Can’t Stop Dancin’’ for UK 12 inch release, with a new B-side dub scratched by Jazzy Joyce … Alexander O’Neal’s ‘Criticize’ has been pressed in limited numbers as a 10 inch, not very useful for DJs, as its two A-side mixes are “twin grooved” and run side by side, so it’s a matter of luck as to which spiral the stylus tracks into! … O’chi Brown & Rick Astley’s ‘Learning To Live’ has now been withdrawn by Magnetic Dance … Trouble Funk’s ‘Trouble’ has been repackaged on 12 inch (Fourth & Broadway 12BRW 80) with their old ‘Drop The Bomb’, ‘Still Smokin’’ and ‘Let’s Get Small’ – yawn! … Franklin Hughes now hosts a Saturday 7-10pm soul show on Coventry’s Mercia Sound 97FM/220MW … Mark Kavanagh is compiling an Irish DJ’s dance chart for fortnightly broadcast on the imminently relaunched Radio Leinster: send him your charts at 43 Thomastown Road, Dunlaoire, Co. Dublin … Ilford High Road’s Centerway has a brand new Music Power 2 disco-specialising record store, while presumably it’s Richard Searling who’s behind the November opening in Manchester’s city centre, next to Victoria Station, of Expansion Records Ltd of Manchester, a specialist soul/jazz/dance/R&B record shop boasting an “unrivalled” back catalogue department … PLASA’s disco equipment exhibition next year will be vastly expanded and at Olympia 2 … London Acoustical Developments have designed their new 942 Professional Disco Turntable to compete with the market-leading Technics SL1200 Mk II deck, similarly vari-speed but with the speed-adjusting slider working more logically so that it speeds up when pushed forward and down when pulled back, while the deck is totally without irritating clutter on the left hand side, leaving clear cueing and scratching access for DJs’ hands … Steve Gurley won the first Milton Keynes Disco-Mixing Championship at Bletchley’s Kincaid’s … Marie Birch and Sound Promotions have moved to South Bank House, Black Prince Road, London SE1 7SJ (01-735 8171) … Steve Rawlings regrets the move from Croydon’s Easy Street to Birmingham’s Libertys of ‘Stevie D’ Drake, the best club manager he’s ever worked for, Birmingham’s gain (he says!) … LL Cool J (who actually missed his plane) and Public Enemy were due as surprise guests at the Prestatyn soul weekender but had to cancel rather at the last minute as they hadn’t time to fit it in (full Prestatyn report next week) … DJ and record importer, the legendary Tony Monson got all fired up at Caister – he fell asleep in front of an electric fire and the trench coat he was wearing caught alight! … Mark Reed has set up a moveable b-boy night in Brighton called Tuff, this week’s venue on Thursday (November 5) being the Escape Club with guests Einstein, Thrashpack and DJ JD, while next Friday (13) it’s the Club Savannah with the Cookie Crew and Faze One … Bob Jones guests this Friday (6) with Simon Dunmore and Les Fisher at their monthly Rhythm Zone in Northolt’s C&L Country Club … Manu Dibango plays Kentish Town’s Town & Country Club next Thursday (12) … Sean French jazz-souls free admission Sunday lunchtimes at Greenford’s Oscars, in the Oldfield Tavern … Jamie Trundle packs upfront Sundays at the Jenyns Arms near Kings Lynn, while Ian P Scott’s heavyweight hip hop pulls around 500 b-boys into Newcastle-upon-Tyne’s Rockshots on Tuesdays and Thursdays … Radio Thamesmead veteran Jamie Wisdom is after South East London area gigs on 01-311 3112 (days) … Kevin Ashton (Newquay Frizzbys/Tall Trees) points out that on the original Polydor pressing of Advance ‘Take It To The Top’, the label lists as co-composer one Spagna – the singer, or her brother? … Ralph Adler, like me, was surprised to hear that the Whispers were making “their first ever UK concert visit”, especially as he remembers seeing them with Carrie Lucas at London’s Dominion around seven years ago! … DON’T STOP JAMMIN’!
HOT VINYL
KOOL MOE DEE ‘How Ya Like Me Now’ (US Jive/Rooftop Records 1073-1-JD)
‘Night Train’-introed sizzling ultra-jittery 0- 104bpm strongly worded rap cutting in chords from James Brown’s ‘Cold Sweat’, ‘Funky Broadway’ and more (in four mixes), by far the hottest new rap around London.
ALEXANDER O’NEAL ‘Criticize’ (Tabu 651211 6)
In four Steve Hodge remixes, this lurching 115⅓bpm smacker with catchily chorusing girls will certainly now work well and have pop appeal, despite being far from his album’s most popular cut.
WHITNEY HOUSTON ‘So Emotional’ (Arista RIST 43)
Pop-aimed smoothly rolling urgent 120⅓bpm jitterer with Eurythmics, Mel & Kim and Miami disco influences in a remix by Shep Pettibone (dub/acappella flip), Jellybean also apparently having a remix waiting in the wings.
ROY AYERS ‘I’m The One (For Your Love Tonight)’ LP (US Columbia FC 40423)
Consistent good set by the ever popular jazz-funk vibist, with the sharply leaping 119bpm ‘I’m The One’, exaggeratedly gruff 97-0bpm ‘I Really Wanna Be With You‘, lovely instrumental 97bpm ‘Blue Summer‘, romantically rolling (0-)81⅐-0bpm ‘I Once Had Your Love‘, jerkily jogging 97bpm ‘Don’t You Ever Turn Away‘, skipping instrumental 110bpm ‘Marlon‘, Chandra Currelli-duetted tranquil 71⅔bpm ‘Let Me Love You’, snappy 0-113½bpm ‘Word’, cornily anti-drugs 114¼bpm ‘Crack Attack‘.
LANIER & CO ‘I Don’t Know’ (Syncopate 12SYD7)
The family group’s lovely Jerry Butler-ish gently loping 107-106⅔-104-103-104-102⅓-103⅔-102⅔-103-102⅓-0bpm classy real soul swayer has added Gary Barnacle sax in Glenn Skinner’s UK remix, flipped on finished copies by a new 114⅓-114bpm Jolley Harris Jolley remix of ‘Dancing In The Night‘ and the dated slow 0-40/80-0bpm ‘Afraid Of Losing You’. They’re currently over here, so catch ’em if you can.
ORAN ‘JUICE’ JONES ‘G.T.O. — Gangsters Takin’ Over’ (US Def Jam FC 40955)
Supported vocally by the Shades Of Black, superb timeless sweet falsetto soul in early Smokey Robinson style, hottest for the “hey, hey baby” conversation-ended gorgeous lightly jittery swaying 103⅙bpm ‘Rock The Night Away’ but also with the 80¼bpm ‘Not On The Outside‘, Alyson Williams-duetted 0-83͕⅐bpm ‘How To Love Again‘, 72bpm ‘You Don’t Miss The Rain‘, 91bpm ‘I Just Can’t Say Goodbye‘, 96bpm ‘Baby Don’t Walk Out On Me‘, 0-54½-0bpm ‘Your Song’, 95bpm ‘We Were Friends’, swinging 0-124½bpm ‘U Bring Out’, all proving him far from a one hit wonder. However, unfortunately here his latest single is the set’s worst track, the drumkit juddered jolting dull 85⅔bpm ‘Cold Spendin’ My $ Money‘ (Def Jam 651121 8).
ELEANOR GOODMAN ‘Sneak Preview’ (US Trumpet TR 12 154)
Paul Kyser-creatcd good beefily lurching 100⅔bpm chunky jiggler not unlike Jocelyn Brown in its rhythm attack although vocally more girlish (inst/edit flip).
KRUSH ‘House Arrest (The Beat Is The Law)’ (FON/Club JABX 63)
Jittery striding 120⅓-0bpm smacker and a more smoothly synthed “house”-ier ‘Jack’s Back‘ B-side version (both with radio/bonus mixes too), recorded in Sheffield and initially promoed on the studio’s label by Nottingham’s Mark Gamble, DJ Cassroc and singer “Ruth Joy”.
THE WHISPERS ‘No Pain, No Gain’ (Solar MCAT 1212)
Attractive sneaky beefily bumping but gentle 0-98⅓bpm jogger, hopefully not too classy for the country at large, with a truly dreadful megamix flip “blended by Gus”.
TONY SINENI ‘Rhythm Of The Beat’ (US Hot Mix 5 HMF 105)
Mickey Oliver-produced percussion pattered beefily galloping infectious simple strong jack track, in four 119bpm mixes plus an 122¼bpm Raz Mix, big already north of Watford Gap.
TONY TERRY ‘Forever Yours’ LP (US Epic BFE 40890)
Ted Currier-produced strong funk ‘n’ soul set, with the catchily jiggling 94½bpm ‘Lovey Dovey’, jerkily snapping 107⅔-0bpm ‘Wassup Wit U‘, simple 107⅔bpm ‘Up & Down Love‘, lovely Fifties-style slow 63⅘-0bpm title track, almost equally old fashioned 87½-0bpm ‘Here With Me‘, latin flavoured 105⅚bpm ‘Day Dreaming‘, cantering 114½bpm ‘Young Love‘, crawling 56¼-0bpm ‘What Would It Take’, frantic 118⅓bpm ‘Fulltime Girl’, currently 12-inched 99⅔-0bpm ‘She’s Fly‘.
ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK ‘Penitentiary III’ LP (US RCA Victor 6663-1-R)
A useful various artists black music soundtrack set, hottest by far for the sultry jiggly jogging 91½bpm YARBOROUGH & PEOPLES ‘Special’ but including the recently seven-inched jerkily jogging 0-104bpm GAP BAND ‘Sweeter Than Candy‘, well worded jittery rapping 101⅚bpm SHAWNIE G. ‘No Mission’s Impossible‘, nice soulfully jogging 99⅚bpm JAMES REESE ‘Just A Touch‘, speedy house-ish instrumental (0-)114½bpm RODNEY FRANKLIN ‘Bustin’ Out‘, snappily whipping (0-)120bpm MIDNIGHT STAR ‘Do The Prep‘, girls sung sharply juddering then slower rapped (0-)110⅚-0-90⅙bpm NEW CHOICE ‘Cold Stupid‘.
ROBBIE-B and JAZZY-J ‘Jazzy-J On The Scratch!’ (US Schoolly-D Records SD-119)
It’s “spot the scratch” time on this hot jumpily frenetic 102½bpm rap ‘n’ cut jitterer (instrumental too), plus the flip’s much longer possibly even deffer and wilder 103½bpm ‘Rock The Go Go!‘, recommended.
MELI’SA MORGAN ‘If You Can Do It: I Can Too!!’ (US Capitol V-15345)
Beefy backbeat-thudding bright rolling 0-109½bpm Jocelyn Brown-ish strutter (in four mixes).
THE HOUSE GIRL ‘Bessie Smith’ (US House HU 40)
Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk-created jittery yet smooth 120½-0bpm jack track, with a possibly more immediate B-side variation, the digitally stuttered throating utterances probably not being by the 1920s’ blues singer although one thing’s certain by the end, her name IS Bessie Smith!
MIKE ‘HITMAN’ WILSON AND BAD BOY BILL ‘Can You Jack’ (US International House Records IH 001)
Friskily infectious if archetypal 122¼bpm jack track flier, complete with “jack jack” stutters and jangly piano, or a more bassily synthed ‘Can You Dance‘ alternative flip (both in two mixes).
BAM-BAM ‘Give It To Me’ (US Westbrook Records BB-WB-#105)
Buzzing synth tones and Crystal Neely’s sexy groans punctuate a butchly chanted percussive 122¾bpm jack track churner, in four versions (122½bpm instrumental and dub mixes).
GIORGE PETTUS ‘Giorge Pettus’ LP (US MCA Records MCA-5826)
Solid if conventional sophisticated and sometimes wailing modern soul, with the pent-up busily wriggling 98⅚bpm ‘I’m Good For You’, lurching 0-106bpm ‘Trouble In Paradise‘, cantering 116bpm ‘One Track Mind‘, deep 75bpm ‘Can You Wait’, 39/78bpm ‘You’re Perfect’, 58⅖bpm ‘Make It Right’, churning 116½bpm ‘I Can Fix-U-Up’, Phil Collins-ish 181bpm ‘One Time Affair’, recently 12-inched (0-)88½bpm ‘My Night For Love‘, selling well to its market.
JOYCE SIMS ‘Come Into My Life’ (US Sleeping Bag Records SLX-28)
Produced in four mixes as usual by Mantronik, this haunting slinky 0-94⅚-94½-95⅚-94½bpm swayer has subtle resonances of her past hits, like a slower ‘(You Are My) All And All’, and is already much plugged by London’s radio pirates — which helps, as it’s a bit of a nagger that needs time to crawl up your trouser leg!
GLENN JONES `Glenn Jones’ LP (Jive HIP 51)
Pleasant husky tender modern soul for listening, the only tracks to hit the floor since it was first on import being the gently swinging 103⅓bpm ‘It Must Be Love’, fluidly tripping 115¼bpm ‘Living In The Limelight‘, and hypnotic slinky 95⅞bpm ‘At Last‘, classily sung as you’d expect.
L.L. COOL J ‘Go Cut Creator Go’ (US Def Jam 44-07476)
‘Special Versions’ of this Chuck Berry-cutting jittery exciting 96-0bpm noisily shouted rock ‘n’ roll rap and the sparser 84⅓bpm ‘Kanday‘.
TONY TEE The Composer ‘Expressing My Thoughts’ (US Rooftop Records RT 006)
From a speaker shaking liver-quivering intro, this fast talking braggart’s 91bpm juddering rap naturally cuts up James Brown (dub too), with a more jauntily syncopated 96bpm ‘Rap Is Music‘ too.
MR LEE ‘Come To House’ (US Trax Records TX 140)
European-flavoured fast flying 122¾bpm stuttery “house” jack track, synth and percussion leading the flip’s 121¼bpm Club Instrumental version.
MIKE ANTHONY ‘Man On A Mission’ (US Emergency PAL-7154)
Datedly “disco” wriggly 0-118½-118¾bpm house judderer with good jangly piano, hustling hi-hats and “Russian”-type doom laden vocal moaning, possibly punchiest in its brighter 0-121½-121¾bpm Dub Version.
HEATWAVE ‘Straight From The Heart’ (Soul City SITYT 2, via PRT)
Dave Godin revives his label? Perhaps not! Anyway, good to see the guys back, even if the all-important bass line lacks “bottom” in the dated mix of this remorselessly nagging jittery insistent ‘I Found Lovin’’-type 0-101⅔-0-101⅔bpm jogger (beware the false finish).
LUTHER VANDROSS ‘So Amazing’ (Epic LUTH T4)
Haunting tender slow 0-32/64bpm smoocher, flipped (inst too) by the really dead slow old ‘If Only For One Night’ and ‘A House Is Not A Home’.
TASHAN ‘Read My Mind (Long Version Remix)’ (Def Jam TASH T1)
Jittery weaving monotonous 100½-100⅓-0bpm husky soul jogger finally out here months late in its US remix (edit too), flipped by the equally over-familiar tough excellent slow soulfully duetted 0-85/42½bpm ‘Got The Right Attitude‘.
SCREAMIN’ RACHEL ‘Fun With Bad Boys’ (US Grand Groove-Hip House Records GG-HH-711)
Cooing (rather than screaming) 0-121¼bpm house tripper, the exaggeratedly girlish vocal really grating as it progresses through Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk’s Jack Me Bad Boy Mix and Farbus’s more rapidly tiresome Hip House Mix.
JONATHAN BUTLER ‘Holding On’ (Jive JIVE T 157)
Disjointedly lurching sometimes slightly pop-reggae flavoured plaintive 95½bpm singalong semi-slowie.
Hi-NRG
THE COMMUNARDS ‘Never Can Say Goodbye’ (London LONX 158), Shep Pettibone-remixed excitingly racing (0-)132½bpm Gloria Gaynor disco revival, also on promo in acappella, dub and instrumental versions;
SUPERTRAMP ‘I’m Beggin’ You’ (A&M AMY 415), Seventies disco-styled quite soulful 121¼bpm jerky bounder with cooing girls building its lilting climax, and a Phil Harding remixed typically “jack”-ed 122bpm instrumental version;
DESIRELESS ‘Voyage Voyage’ (CBS DESI T1), synth washed chugging lush 123⅔bpm Continental smash Euro thudder sung by a girl in French throughout;
ERIA FACHIN ‘Savin’ Myself’ (Saturday STD 1, via PRT), girl-sung cheerfully galloping Hi-NRG chart-topper, now slipping, finally out here in its original 134¾bpm Blaster Mix but as flip to Ian Levine’s new thinner 134¼bpm Hot Line Remix, on a Nightmare sister label Levine has set up specially for licensed (as opposed to his self-produced) product;
DOLLAR ‘O L’Amour’ (London LONX 146), Stock Aitken Waterman-produced zappily rattling 121⅓bpm revival of Erasure’s song;
PAUL LEKAKIS ‘Boom Boom (Let’s Go Back To My Room) (Remix)’ (Champion CHAMPX 12-43), the frantically flying worldwide smash from earlier this year reissued now in a whip-cracking and panting 130bpm Phil Hard Remix (obviously by Phil Harding!);
CROISETTE ‘Wasted Nights’ (Nightmare MARE 40), punchily pounding frantic 129½-0bpm Bananarama-ish rattler;
EARTHA KITT ‘Arabian Song’ (Quazar QUAT 1, via Pinnacle), steadily chugging (0-)120bpm thudder with “Middle Eastern” touches even at times in Eartha’s otherwise typical vocal tone;
SPAGNA ‘Easy Lady’ (CBS 651169 6), reissued jauntily trotting chugger on two separate 12-inchers, either this (0-)112½-112¼-0bpm Extended Mix coupled with Rutger ‘Rutti’ Kroese’s neat (0-)113-0bpm ‘Easy Lady/Call Me (Combimix)’, or (CBS 651169 8) the more subtle 112⅓-0bpm Album Mix coupled with her brand new European jiggly swaying 113bpm ‘Dance, Dance, Dance‘;
BILLY IDOL ‘Mony Mony’ (Chrysalis IDOLX 11), whereas an earlier Downtown Mix was 135¼bpm, this latest drums-pounded 131½-0bpm Hung Like A Pony Remix is usefully close to Tommy James & The Shondells’ original 131-129bpm disco classic, the flip’s seven-inched live version being (0-)142-0bpm;
THE LIFT ‘Don’t U Treat Me Like A Lover’ (Magnet MAGT 313), cymbal schlurped then sax honked vigorously sung urgent 132½bpm galloper, exciting Hi-NRG from an unexpected source;
EURYTHMICS ‘Beethoven (I Love To Listen To)’ (RCA DAT 11), ‘1984 (Sex Crime)’-type muttering monotonous chugging 113¾bpm thudder.

I’m a bit disappointed to discover that Bam-Bam’s ‘Give It To Me’ was the first acid house track to hit the dance chart, as I never rated it particularly highly – but then I’ve never been a big fan of pseudo-orgasmic panting.
The Hip House mix of Screamin’ Rachel’s ‘Fun With Bad Boys’ is a false alarm: it will be a while yet until we get to hip house as an actual genre (although The Beatmasters/Cookie Crew’s ‘Rok Da House’ has already ticked most of the boxes).
