Public Enemy’s new single is due now on import 12 inch but began selling two weekends ago on seven inch, the totally typical 98½bpm ‘Don’t Believe The Hype’ with familiar vocal patterns and a nagging “noise”, flipped by the more tensely jittering 0-99⅓-0bpm ‘Prophets Of Rage’ (US Def Jam WS4-07934)… Gwen McCrae ‘All This Love That I’m Giving’ has also suddenly started selling on seven inch as people discover that it’s flipped by the weaving slow 0-80½-80⅓bpm throatily soulful ‘90% Of Me Is You’ (Flame Records MELT 7)… James Horrocks, incidentally, has taken Gwen as well as Taffy with him from Rhythm King to his own new label, The Dance Yard… Yo Yo having left to engineer exclusively for Stock Aitken Waterman, the remixing Extra Beat Boys are now Jamie Bromfield and Kevin O’Reardon… LPs reviewed in full on import and now due out here are James Brown ‘I’m Real’ (Scotti Bros POLD 5230), Run-DMC ‘Tougher Than Leather’ (London LONLP 38), and Magic Lady ‘Magic Lady’ (Motown ZL 72367)… Bass Records, whose two debut releases were pressed like US imports (not that they fooled me!), turns out to be a new subsidiary of Champion… ‘Powercuts’, the Vibrettes ‘Humpty Dump’-pivoted rare groove megamix presumed to be a bootleg as it was originally on totally anonymous white label, turns out to be produced by Mick Power and Brian ‘Baam’ Mitchell, and credited as being by Power Cut Crew on Vinyl Lab Records (VL 0003, distributed by Rough Trade/The Cartel)… Coldcut’s currently promoed ‘The Only Way Is Up’ creation for Yazz and the Plastic Population is hi-hat hustled speedy 0-124½-0bpm old fashioned Hi-NRG disco!… ‘I Feel Dynamic’, the Smiley Culture-ish 121½-0bpm UK rap scratched by DJ Sasha to James Brown’s ‘(Call Me) Super Bad’ beat (to quote my original review), was due out on March 15 by the Dynamic 3 but has only now surfaced, credited instead to The Dynamic MC’s (still on Tuff Groove TUFF 002)… Annette Taylor ‘It Must Be Right’ is another that amazingly is only just now out commercially on Cooltempo, when – like Julian Jonah too – I thought it had been out for months (it would be very useful if the white labels people send me could include such little details as the release date and the name of the record company, as I’m not clairvoyant!)… Curtis Mayfield is about to tour here and may find that the re-issue on his own Curtom label, via Ichiban Records, of the ‘Superfly’ soundtrack LP is suddenly rather timely!… James Brown’s ‘It’s A Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World’ is currently to soundtrack to a Tennents Extra lager commercial, and Ray Charles’s joyously boogieing ‘Mess Around’ from 1953 is highlighted in the hilarious ‘Planes, Trains And Automobiles’ film – could they deserve re-release?… M-D-Emm, temporarily deleted in the hope that real demand will build, based the ‘Give A Little More Body Action’ remix on a combination of Brass Construction ‘Partyline’ and the Jammers ‘And You Know That’… Leigh Guest, the Double Trouble remixer, this weekend starts creating a 15 minute megamix for Chris Forbes every Sunday morning on Capital Radio at around 2.30am… Broadcasting Research Unit poll findings indicate that only 36 per cent of the population wants more radio stations, most people apparently being happy with existing services… Passion and Debut have moved addresses to Skratch Music House, 81 Crabtree Lane, London SW6 6LW (01-381 8315)… GEE st Records look like forming a Westbrook/G Records label with Chicago producer Bam Bam for house release here… Bournemouth’s The Academy disco has launched its own MusikTek label… Eric B & Rakim, currently doing interviews in London, may be due for a real “volume pumping” remix!… Nicky Holloway has swapped his now defunct “doos” for the Saturday “Trip” at London’s Astoria, causing roadblocks outside while inside the acid house and Balearic beats (full details next week) get all the trendies waving their arms in the air – the result is the most like a late Seventies New York disco that I’ve ever encountered in London (which is not necessarily a recommendation, as the “disco dross” syndrome is becoming apparent too)… Johnny Walker’s upcoming acid/Balearic gigs in London are Thursday (16) at Future in Hungerford Lane’s The Sanctuary, Friday (17) at Enter The Dragon in Kensington’s The Park, Saturday (18) at Elysium in Clink Street with Steve Proctor, and every Monday at Spectrum in Charing Cross’s Heaven… Simon Dunmore and Bob Jones in contrast play modern soul upstairs at Soho’s Wag every Tuesday… Robin King of the defunct Delirium is opening a new small members club in Covent Garden at the end of July, for “affluent acid fans”… Paul Simpson was all ready to release a remix of Serious Intention ‘You Don’t Know’ in the UK until he heard LA Mix’s adaptation of its chorus in ‘Check This Out’, which he’s hoping to make some money out of!

A shrill swirling 120bpm breezy bounder by one of the youngest US nymphets yet, a 10 year old, quite soulful in her way, with remixer David Todd adding pixilated piano, and more loosely bubbling jaunty 120⅔bpm The Mercyful Energy Mix (Percussapella too).

ERIC B & RAKIM ‘Follow The Leader’ (MCA Records DOPET 1)
As already exclusively revealed, their eagerly awaited new label debut is a typically vocal toned fast talking 0-110-0bpm strange rumbling and swirling dramatic throbber with “strings” and things in the backing, to create a totally new type of accompaniment for a rap, all very atmospheric and compelling (dub/acappella flip).

AL B. SURE! ‘Off On Your Own (Girl) (Street Mix)’ (US Warner Bros/Uptown 0-20952)
Billed on the sleeve but not the label as side one, although it is the main vocal version, this ethereally squeaked nagging tricky bumpily wriggling 0-97⅚bpm “go go hip hop”-type half-stepper will probably be too strange and specialist for mass acceptance outside soul circles and thus makes an odd choice of follow-up, the other side’s 97⅔bpm Remix being even trickier and more dub than song (tighter jittering 0-97⅚bpm Radio Edit, and the previously announced Spanish translated 0-91½bpm ‘Noche Y Dia’ version of ‘Nite And Day’, too).

MASTERS OF CEREMONY ‘Dynamite’ (US 4th + B’Way BWAY 466)
Dropping their reggae influence to rap (amongst other topics) in praise of their DJ Shabazz, this military snaredrum introed 0-106¾bpm lurcher is liver quaveringly abrupt in its “transformer”-style juddering momentum – which must sound awesome through giant speakers – each burst of noise being itself full of slithering layers of scratching (Inst/Dubb too).

DINOSAUR L ‘Dinosaur L Bangs Again’ (CityBeat CBX 1205)
Seriously strange, 1978’s hi-hat hissed free form rambling and galloping 132-131-130½-130-127½-130-0bpm episodic ‘Go Bang’ (on the flip), with some chanting guys and separate girls going “go bang bang bang go bang go”, has had these girls lifted by the Todd Terry Project in ‘Bango (To The Batmobile)’ and now also by South London remixers Hard Times Productions in their totally new Todd Terry-answering frantic (but steady) 120bpm A-side house track, which should do well in the current climate.

FULL HOUSE ‘I Remember’ (US DJ International Records DJ 950)
Danny Wilson and Richard Patterson revive the old jaggedly jolting D Train drive on this huskily mournful 118¼bpm jiggly lurcher, in four mixes by Julian ‘Jumpin’ Perez and Rocky Jones (0-118⅔bpm Bad Boy Bill Remembers), more of a song in Colonel Abrams-ish style than most recent house from Chicago.

R.J.’s LATEST ARRIVAL ‘Truly Yours’ (US EMI-Manhattan EI-48090)
RJ Rice returns with an excellent soul set that thanks to its punchy slow tempos would have been even more in its element here four years ago, dominated by the startlingly searing vocals of De De Leitta (a match for Chaka or anyone) on the Jean Carn-ish thuddingly jogging (0-)95⅔bpm ‘What Becomes Of A Broken Heart’, densely rolling tender than wailing (0-)90½-0bpm ‘I’ll Always Love You’, currently 12 inched exaggeratedly nasal jittery swaying 100-0bpm ‘Off The Hook (With Your Love)’, anguishedly wailing stop/start 0-33½-0bpm title track, dreamy (0-)31bpm ‘Miracles’, tightly tapping 95bpm ‘Time 4 Love’, jolting 98⅓bpm ‘Could Have Been You’, lurching sax instrumental 98bpm ‘Water Pump’, meandering 78-0bpm ‘Nights’, “purple” snapping 122bpm ‘Terri’s Place’.

GALLIANO ‘Frederic Lies Still’ (US Acid Jazz JAZ ID1)
Acid jazz?! Another one this week that’s on seven inch, this drawlingly hip talking and tootling 0-114¾-117-118-119⅔-120-119bpm jazz monologue treatment of Curtis Mayfield’s classic old ‘Freddie’s Dead’ (from ‘Superfly’) has a burblingly shuffling beat that should have “rare groove” appeal too.

GREGORY HINES ‘That Girl Wants To Dance With Me (Long Version)’ (US Epic 49-07808)
The dancing all round entertainer has had created for him by producer Luther Vandross (and remixer Jellybean) one of those lightly lurching, rolling and tumbling 119⅔-0bpm swirlers in the ‘Searching’-derived but basically ‘I Gave It Up When I Fell In Love’-copying style (inst/edit flip), a cert for radio play.

TONY TERRY ‘Forever Yours’ (Epic TONY T3)
Unlikely to mean much to the average disco goer but bliss for the older folks, this radio-aimed 64-0bpm lush slow swayer (in three mixes) accurately recreates the late Fifties rock ‘n’ soul ballad sound (with the more Marvin Gaye-ish imploring 87⅔bpm ‘Here With Me’, too).

NEW EDITION ‘If It Isn’t Love (Club Mix)’ (US MCA Records MCA-23830)
Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis return in their old style as creators of this actually rather ponderous jittery juddering (0-)98-0bpm jogger, now in what we’d call “go go hip hop” style, plaintively harmonised and worried by the youngsters (in three mixes).

TUFF CREW ‘My Part Of Town’ (US SOo Deff Records WAR-020)
Another, though good, Bobby Byrd ‘I Know You Got Soul’-based 0-114bpm scratching rap (with authentic ‘Static’ crackling through!), flipped by the jolting 105½-0bpm ‘Detonator’.

5 STAR MOET ‘In Full Effect’ (US B Boy Records BB-20-77)
Presumably no relation of D.Moet, this young family group (so far as I can gather) rap and brag to a strange jerkily surging 100bpm beat that scratches in James Brown’s ‘Funky President’ guitar amongst other things – the jerking’s full effect being to make one feel seasick! – with an equally jerky chugging 98bpm bluesier guitar based ‘Let Me Love You’ flip.

JOE SMOOTH INC featuring ANTHONY THOMAS ‘The Promised Land’ (US DJ International Records DJ 905)
Joe Smooth-created schlurping hi-hat hustled speedy but sombre 126¼bpm inspirational song, sort of gospel made to feel mighty real in Seventies disco rather than Eighties house style (126¾bpm Underground and 126½ Radio Mixes too).

THE CONTOURS ‘Do You Love Me’ (Motown ZT 41904), 1962’s enduring party raver, covered here by Brian Poole & The Tremeloes but still unsurpassable in this 0-148bpm original Gordy version (complete with classic false fade), given however on the A-side an unnecessary emasculating 0-149¾-150-149¾bpm extended modern remix (with a 0-149¾bpm edit too), and coupled also with January 1960’s Ray Charles inspired piano and fuzz bass churned 133½-133-133½-133bpm BARRETT STRONG ‘Money (That’s What I Want)’, better known here by the Beatles but Berry Gordy Jr’s first independent release (in fact on a label called Anna);

STEVE WINWOOD ‘Roll With It (12” Mix)’ (Virgin VST 1085), gradually cranking up 0-117-0bpm piano and Hammond organ led backbeat smacker in pure mid-Sixties style, like Jr Walker & The All Stars’ ‘Shake And Fingerpop’ crossed slightly with the Ramsey Lewis Trio’s ‘Wade In The Water’, marvellous stuff;

FAT BOYS ‘The Twist (Twist So Def Version)’ (Urban URBX 20), Chubby Checker (in the Beach Boys’ role this time) sings his 1960 dance craze classic while the others shout raucous rap inserts, to an over frantic and thin sounding beat on this scratching extended 0-155¾-155¼bpm 12 inch version, the flip’s 0-155¼-0bpm ‘Yo, Twist!’ seven inch version being tighter while the 0-156-0bpm ‘The Twist (Yell For More)’ is the punchiest of all and most compatible with Chubby’s own – wait for it! – also 156-156½bpm original;

BROS ‘I Owe You Nothing (Club Mix)’ (CBS ATOM T4), as opposed to the previously reviewed Over 18 Mix, this breezily flying 124bpm one is instrumentally extended and straightforward;

LOVE STREET ‘Galaxy’ (Parlophone 12R 6183), War’s infectiously jumping staccato afro-funk classic from 1978 cleanly remade in Fon Force-produced functional sharply snapping (0-)119⅔bpm Star Patrol Says “Mix It Down” and (0-)119⅓bpm Mixed On Mars version, flipped by quite different but also 119⅔bpm On A Rocket and 119½bpm d-d-d-d-d-d-Disco Mixes of what I take to be a house treatment of The Originals’ ‘Come On Down To Love Street’;

BASE TEAM featuring Veronica Martin ‘Dance To The Rhythm/Hot Stuff’ (Hot Melt TCT 16), TC Curtis gets into the sampling game with a breathy girl intoned pleasant infectious wriggling frisky 119½bpm jiggler using a few familiar drop-ins as accents;

BELVA ‘Let Me Kiss It (Where It Hurts) (Phase One Mix)’ (Supreme SUPET 127), UK-based Milwaukee girl seductively whispering, kissing, giggling and wailing through a perkily percolating 0-118⅔-0bpm little jogger with sneaky charm, a bit like a livelier ‘I Can’t Stand The Rain’;

MIRAGE ‘Push The Beat’ (Debut DEBTX 3050), now Nigel Wright creates (without samples) a frantic 124bpm bass bombing medley of everything from Bomb The Bass, Mel & Kim and S-Express to Krush, Coldcut and Kylie Minogue, all totally remade;

THE COMMUNARDS ‘There’s More To Love (Extended)’ (London LONX 173), Phil Spector-ish resonantly echoing 0-124⅓bpm canterer with some  Mexican brass, Spanish chatter, and an ultra-catchy “there’s more to love than boy meets girl” chorus (stratospherically sung as ever);

ZIGGY MARLEY & THE MELODY MAKERS ‘Tomorrow People (Reggae This Mix)’ (Virgin VST 1049), Bob’s son would be criticised for sounding either like or not like his late father so takes the easy commercial option of the former by copying Dad on a slightly depressing (0-)94⅔-95⅔-97bpm reggae jogger that thus seems instantly familiar;

MILLI VANILLI ‘Girl You Know It’s True’ (Cooltempo COOLX 170), a pair of Munich-based pretty boys with Terence Trent D’Arby-type braids, muttering, cooing and rapping through an attractively lilting but soft centred (0-)97½-98-97⅔-0bpm meandering swayer, a rap ballad for little girls;

GIANT STEPS ‘(The World Don’t Need) Another Lover (Remix)’ (A&M AMY 445), beefily thudding then huskily whinneying guy sung 110⅚bpm juddery US pop lurcher full of half-familiar hooks, which don’t make it memorable itself;

EURYTHMICS ‘You Have Placed A Chill In My Heart (Dance Mix)’ (RCA DAT 16), infinitely preferable in its tunefully pleasant steadily rolling 104⅔bpm seven inch pressing (DA 16), this 12 inch version is bogged down by a ponderous rigidly juddering 0-103¼bpm rhythm that’s no help at all;

ROACHFORD ‘Cuddly Toy (X-Rated Acid Toy Mix)’ (CBS ROA QT2), it seems perverse when this guy, who is black but doesn’t want to be stereotyped as such, makes a Spencer Davis Group-like mid-Sixties style untidily thrashing rock record (125½bpm in original form) that purposefully doesn’t sound black, only for it to be given a Democratic 3 remix that tries to turn it into a stereotyped 0-123-122¾-123bpm acid house mix by splicing in new beats and percussion breaks, Malcolm X samples and the like;

COUSIN RACHEL ‘Boogie Nights (Steamin’ Mix)’ (Supreme SUPET 129), girl cooed pattering limp (0-)120-0bpm remake of Heatwave’s 1977 smash, better the longer it’s on but not really what the Seventies revival was meant to be about;

TOMBOY ‘People Get Moving (Streetmix)’ (Epic 650385 6), over long traffic noise and chanting introed violently lurching Janet Jackson “beat” adapting 0-93bpm thudding basher by an urchin-cropped blonde from Norway, powerful though ponderous;

K-ROC ‘Turn It Up 1’ (Jive ZPL T 117), LA Mix-ish routine speedily bounding 0-123bpm volume pumper;

FOR YOUR NOSE ONLY ‘Scoobidoo Goes House’ (Swiss Panthera PANT-1002), as if there aren’t enough homegrown volume pumpers, now Switzerland exports this 120⅘-0bpm one with obvious vocal lifts from Madness, The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, James Brown and others, plus irritating chipmunk girls along with bursts of Sabrina, Rick Astley and more;

GEOFFREY WILLIAMS ‘Cinderella (12” Mix)’ (Polydor PZ 3), chugging (0-)112bpm gruffly moaned rewrite of ‘Billie Jean’;

VICTORIA WILSON JAMES ‘I Want You In My Movie’ (Risin’ Records RAHT 101), Ralph Tee launches his own label with a Eurobeat tinged Jody Watley-ish 114¾bpm calmly bounding strider that would be less tedious if its husky American talk-singer projected herself more instead of muttering;

PRETTY POISON ‘Nightime (The Shep Pettibone Mix)’ (Virgin VST 1068), juddery rambling 115½bpm jitterer by a tiresomely pitched girl group;

THE DREAM TICKET ‘Robokop’ (MusikTek TEK 1T), dialogue studded dull 117-0bpm lurcher in the sampling style, but without using more than the odd James Brown scream that’s recognisable;

3 MAN ISLAND ‘Jack The Lad (UK Remix)’ (Urban URBX 19), dreadful corny would-be Cockney “jack” track with stuttering session girls and 119bpm volume pumping rhythm, diluting Urban’s reputation.

HAZELL DEAN ‘Maybe (We Should Call It A Day)’ (EMI 12EM 62), Stock Aitken Waterman-created pitter-pattering and throbbing urgent breezy 119¾bpm strident catchy wailer, identifiably in Hazell’s style rather than (say) Bananarama-ish, flipped by her old ‘No Fool (For Love)’, in a new 110½bpm Murray Mix (the too good to hurry mix?);

CROISETTE ‘You’re A Time Waster’ (Nightmare MARE 54), plaintive girl keened smoothly flowing 121⅓ Eurobeat canterer;

KIM WESTON ‘Helpless’ (Nightmare MARE 55), reverential straightforward 139½-0bpm remake of her Holland/Dozier/Holland-penned 1966 Gordy classic, using real brass by the sound of it, flipped by Levine & Trench’s recreation of the “sugar pie honey bunch” beat in the 126-0bpm ‘Signal Your Intention’, both good as middle-aged nostalgia;

BACKSTREET RAIDERS ‘One Track Mind’ (Blue Moon BUM 3), Ian Levine & Steven Wagner-created painfully offkey 123⅔bpm galloper by a guy who just can’t sing, truly dreadful!

SANDRA ‘Everlasting Love (Remix)’ (Siren SRNT 85), like Desireless and Sabrina, last year’s German revival of the Robert Knight/Love Affair oldie gets the second time around 0-118¾-119½-119⅓-119⅔-119¾bpm PWL remix treatment from Pete Hammond, with her newer less insistent 117½bpm ‘Stop For A Minute’ as flip;

ROXANNE SHANTÉ ‘Go On Girl (Rockin’ The Park Mix)’ (Breakout USAF 633), Streets Ahead slows the Lyn Collins ‘Think’-based rap down to 112½bpm for a synch also with the Blackbyrds’ ‘Rock Creek Park’ rhythm, making it much more subtle than Marley Marl’s included original 115⅔bpm mix and dub (old 102½bpm ‘Have A Nice Day’ too);

MAC THORNHILL ‘Who’s Gonna Ease The Pressure (Big Mac Mix)’ (10 Records TENR 214), driving bass and baritone sax bubbled scatting Abrams-ish house hit, bigger on floors than in shops, now dominated by a teeth-gritting added (0-)122¼bpm acidic cymbal sizzle (original (0-)124bpm Sizzle House Canadian Club Mix flip, as its logical subtitle should apparently have been spelt all along);

KYLIE MINOGUE ‘Got To Be Certain (Extra Beat Boys Remix)’ (PWL Records PWLT 12R), Jamie and Kevin (see Beats & Pieces for an rm scoop!) beef up the bumping (0-)117bpm beat with some “Rick Astley” vocal tones that are doubtless Kylie herself slowed down!;

SID HAYWOODE ‘Boogie Oogie Oogie (Pascal Gabriel Remix)’ (Fresher 12SID-001R), Emilio Pasquez gives the fairly redundant A Taste Of Honey remake a fuller and bouncier 0-122¾-0bpm texture before acid synth starts weazling;
