ERICK & PARRISH of EPMD (which stands for Erick & Parrish Makin’ Dollars), as a truncated caption last week failed to make clear, did indeed make dollars in appearing at BCM Records’ Summer Dance Festival, only being persuaded to visit Berlin by Sleeping Bag Records advancing them $200,000 of album royalties not in fact due until next April! . . . CDs being such a big part of even the dance market in Germany, BCM Records not surprisingly have circulated there a very limited edition 24 track double CD compilation as a memento of their ‘Summer Dance Festival – The Musical Highlights‘ (BCM 55321), nice to have, even if the included De La Soul, Chubb Rock and Stevie B in the event did not appear . . . Futureshock Promotions (01-533 3840) are organising another exotic weekender in Madrid between Thursday-Sunday, October 5-8, with visits to the city’s most upfront clubs on the other nights but the main focus being early hours ‘happenings’ on the Friday night/Saturday morning hosted by DJs Judge Jules and Graeme Park, at Archy and Kitsch . . . Livewire Promotions’ next Prestatyn weekender (see also photo caption) will feature some significant changes in the main Arena, new American vari-lights livening up the dancefloor and the DJ console being separated off to its own stage on one side, thus helping speed up change-overs between the live acts . . . N.W.A. ‘Straight Outta Compton’, the controversial rap album about which I raved at length some six or seven months back, is finally out here on Fourth & Broadway (BRLP 534) . . . Les Adams has belatedly just realised that the Clivilles & Cole created 28th St Crew ‘I Need A Rhythm‘ quite blatantly uses his own US hit remake of Maurice ‘This Is Acid‘ as its basis (both are on the same label, so there’s no great legal problem!) — Les meanwhile, as well as remixing Norman Cook ‘Blame It On The Bassline’ for the US, is also completely remaking (to be credited as a full LA Mix production) the previously unissued Maurice ‘All Because Of You’ in R&B and House versions . . . The Manic MC’s ‘Mental’ turns out to have been heavily inspired by Hipnosis’ ‘Droid‘, an obscure (as in not very good!) German ‘sleeper’ from the new beat era . . . David Peaston and CeCe Rogers performed at a private promotional showcase in London on Monday and doubtless will be visiting a few more venues while they’re here . . . Steve Wiggins now jocks Wed/Thur/Fri/Saturdays at Cardiff’s The Bank, trendily converted from a real bank, in St Mary Street, booking PAs and promotions for the club too (on 0446-735562) . . . Gary Oldis has gone back to his roots in Sunderland, after three years jocking in the south (well, Scarborough!), running Tues/Wed/Thur/Fridays at Chambers Nightclub in High Street West, Wednesday being the upfront music and live guests night (PAs wanted on 0723-378508 — he’s already had the likes of the Unique 3, Richie Rich and Merlin) . . . Andy King (0905-22551) is likewise after PAs to shake their funky thang for his upfront and packed 8-10.30pm Sunday soul, house and video session at Dudley’s Cromwell’s Nightclub . . . Dancefloor Liberation, embodied by DJs Paul Kirk and Kevin Roux (any good in the kitchen?), jock in Leicester at Streetlife on Fridays and The Forum on Saturdays . . . Stevie May spins upfront soul and house Saturdays at St Helens’ newest nightclub, Lowies . . . DJ Peachy has started ‘a fusion of house beats and rhymes’ called Vision every Sunday (free before 11pm) at Bermondsey Old Kent Road’s Dun Cow . . . Billy Popham has quit globe trotting for a while to become resident DJ at Clerkenwell’s Cage, where Jay Strongman runs his Pig night on Saturdays . . . Tony Griffin turns out to be the jock with the indecipherable signature who, normally resident Thurs/Fri/Saturdays at Birmingham’s Bobby Brown’s, does the Monday soul/funk/house session at Cheltenham’s Swifts . . . Still apparently only on promo, and done an injustice in my review of the previously also promoed instrumental mixes which I not unnaturally assumed would be better than the subsequent vocal version, this Martin Fry groaned catchily cantering typically facile 118.8bpm vocal is in fact as good as white boy’s house gets (except perhaps it could do with more of a song to cross over), not necessarily improved though flipped for added street cred by emptily throbbing 118.4bpm Frankie Knuckles and better more tightly trotting (with some nice vibes) 122.2bpm Bruce Forest Mixes.

Hotter than ever now that it’s been remixed, the Coffee revival gains a ‘Let’s Start The Dance’ jiggled jaggedly leaping bass’ heavy new 0-124-0-124bpm hip house-ish attack (beat losingly edited during the rhythm slurring lull near the start), flipped by its 124bpm possibly even wilder Swing To The Hip House Mix and suddenly tame seeming acidic Original Mix.

Infectious ragamuffin hip house rap finally exploding in this ‘Tales From The Darkside’/’Twilight Zone’-ishly introed then James Brown brass and other samples prodded lively lurching 120-0bpm superior remix, with a different scrubbingly shuffling (instru-)Mental Mix and the original 119.8-0bpm Darkside Mix.

MC’S LOGIK ‘Get Involved’ (Submission SUBX 013, via Pacific Records)
The Nottingham hip hoppers, fronted by chiding female MC Vendetta and angrily rapping MC Mach One with DJ Trade and Chisel, by coincidence use the same underlying break beat as Roxanne Shanté ‘Live On Stage’ for this Bobby Byrd sampling 110.2bpm scrubbingly scratched Monie Love-ish funky jiggler, given a different more jolting 116.5bpm In It To Win It treatment too, coupled by the Mach rapped blatantly Incredible Bongo Band based 115-114.8bpm ‘We’re On A Mission (The Revolution)‘ and its useful — as totally sampled! — 114.4bpm Bonus Beats.

‘James Bond Theme’ guitar-ed slithery scratching 115.8bpm declamatory rap, the A-side on import (US Mercury 874 909-1, with an instrumental and four mixes of the flip) and hotter, initially at any rate, than the here A-side promoted also 115.8- 0bpm but unrelated ‘No DJ Like Chuck‘, a less urgent disjointed lurcher here in just its Yuh Unnerstan’! and dubwise On TV mixes.

GARY JACKMASTER WALLACE & JAMMIN’ J ‘Party Time’ (US House N Effect HNE-1)
Produced by DJ Gary on his own Chicago label, this Leonard ‘Jammin’ J’ Joyner rapped at times ragamuffin-ish good jaunty hip house jiggler is punctuated by familiar twittery Todd Terry-ish samples and partly driven by Hamilton Bohannon’s ‘Let’s Start The Dance’ break beat, in (0-)121.2-121.4bpm House N Effect Mix, (0-)121.4bpm Hip Hop Mix, 121.4bpm Farley’s Hip House Mix and LNR Mix 1, 121.2-121.4bpm LNR Mix 2.

BETTY WRIGHT ‘Keep Lovin’ New’ (Sure Delight SDT 11, via JetStar)
Bucking all the current trends, probably because it’s selling fast to girls who are into the words, this welcome surprise hit is a chunkily lurching deceptively downtempo 66.3bpm traditional soul swayer with enough beef in its beats for the groin grinding Soul II Soul crowd, flipped by the half steppin’ funkily jiggling and scatting 96bpm ‘We Down‘.

BOBBY BROWN ‘Rock Wit’cha (Extended Version)’ (MCA Records MCAT 1367)
Instead of sidestepping backwards for the expected ‘Roni’, we keep pace with the US for this also slow and thus here for the first time pace-changing LA & Babyface produced tender rolling 77.6bpm smoocher, plugging Marvin Gaye (77.7bpm 7 Version too, plus the older datedly jolting 115.4bpm ‘Seventeen’).

BABYFACE ‘It’s No Crime (Extended Mix)’ (Solar MCAT 1366)
Typically efficient joltingly littering Bobby Brown-style 0-115.4-115.2-115.4-115.2-115.4bpm lurcher by LA’s partner, much altered from his album version in this stuttery mix (115.4bpm Instrumental and 115.6bpm Cussapella too).

Debuting a new Motown label logo (although the sleeve also confusingly refers to it being called New Jack Rap), this Teddy Riley co-created patchy rap album by his 18-year-old brother Markell, Aqil Davidson (16) and Brandon ‘B. Doggs’ Mitchell (17) has the superb Mtume ‘Juicy Fruit’ rewording 91.3bpm ‘Juicy’, terrifically funky though short 97bpm ‘Deep‘, pleasantly rolling laid back party atmosphere 93.1-0bpm ‘Friends To The End‘, and of course already massive (0-)107bpm ‘New Jack Swing‘, plus the less essential James Brown sampling 110.4bpm ‘Leave The Mike Smokin’‘, narrative slow rolling 0-88.1-0bpm ‘V- Man‘, chatting and scratching 0-94.3bpm ‘Peanut Butter‘, nervy 117.2bpm ‘Club Head‘, jolting 0-107bpm ‘Wipe Your Sweat‘, organ notes backed dull slow talking 87.1bpm ‘Soul Man‘, scratchy sax buzzed 125.8bpm ‘Rock Steady‘. Many of the old records sampled add crackling static!

In the Canadian based though US distributed label’s typically spare and sinewy house style, this Nick Fiorucci produced fluid and sometimes slightly acidic Jamie Principle-ish gentle husky mutterer has striding (0-)121.3bpm Club, breathily whispered stuttery (0-)120.2-0bpm Groovy House and smoothly hustling 120.2-0bpm Deep Garage Mixes, tinkly thrumming 120-0bpm Cosmic and hollow ‘drain’ sizzled instrumental 121.8-0bpm Blow Out Dubs.

THE KLF ‘3 A.M. Eternal’ (KLF Communications KLF 005T, via The Cartel)
The Justified Ancients of MuMu’s alter ego feature a lonely girl mournfully intoning about ‘London by night’ through some monkish chanting, atmospheric cathedral-like resonance and all too brief haunting sax to result in a consequently somewhat Euro flavoured (0-)116bpm deep house pulser (chunkier 117bpm Pure Trance instrumental flip).

KELLI SAÉ ‘It’s Too Late’ (US Easy Street EZS-7557)
KOMIX created nagging girl multi-tracked neatly burbling wriggly garage canterer, deceptively shifting in 122-123.2-123.6-122-123.2-123.4bpm Club Mix, 123.4bpm Radio Edit, sparser 122.2bpm Hard and Cool Dubs, apparently signed up here along with the rest of the label by Viceroy Records.

DE LA SOUL ‘The Mack Daddy On The Left’ (US Tommy Boy TB 934)
Not long before the UK gets a Dave Dorrell & CJ Mackintosh remix of ‘Eye Know’, this previously unissued mumbling guys sandwiched but mainly plaintive girl rapped (0-)99bpm lazy roller is a bonus track on the US pressing of ‘Say No Go’, there as here in Dorrell & Mackintosh’s 110bpm Say No Dope Mix, with an 110.25bpm Radio Mix, plus the added rhythms overlaid 110bpm New Keys Vocal and Instrumental remixes which were separately released here as the New Kick Mix (Big Life BLR 10R).

RICHIE HAVENS ‘Going Back To My Roots’ (US Week-Off SE-242)
Lamont Dozier’s classic is currently being much revived again, in just about all the versions there are including this raspingly smoky voiced jangling and scrubbing usefully uptempo 119.8bpm old treatment, originally on Elektra (promoed once by WEA back-to-back with Lamont’s original!) but now on a rather dubious looking reissue label, back-to-back this time with the purposefully rolling jiggly jogging 0-106bpm repetitive rare groovy PETER BROWN ‘Overnight Sensation‘ (plus instrumental), which could be useful too.

NEW-RO ‘She’s A Nymphomaniac (Horny Club Mix)’ (German zyx rec ZYX 6129-12)
New Rochelle, New York recorded simple synth piped 118bpm loper with producer Larry ‘L.A.’ Anderson muttering lazily and lasciviously through whimpering squeals about how a certain young lady of his acquaintance ‘likes it on her back’, amongst many other fully detailed positions (118.4bpm LA’s Dogstyle Dub Mix too)!

DEBBIE McKAYLE ‘I Need Yo’ Lovin’ (Extended Club Mix)’ (Tam Tam Records TTT 014)
Larry & Alida ‘LA.’ Anderson produced simple breezily bounding 120bpm garage jiggler calmly cooed by Jamaican-American Debbie, originally on US Hit-N-Run but jauntily remixed here by Stephen Taylor (Acappella/Bonus Beats too).

THE LATIN RAGE ‘Esta Loca (Extended Version)’ (Italian DiscoMagic OUT 3249)
Repetitive ‘qu’esta loca’ chanting girl nagged jittery 122.6bpm tumbling Italian house thumper with some acidic twitters, coupled by an unrelated but also (0-)122.6bpm bubbly more uptempo version of ‘Sueno Latino‘, muttering and groaning with 28th St Crew ‘Inch By Inch’ influence too.

COOL CUT ‘Crossfader’ (German S.O.S./Sound Of Secrets S.O.S. A-101)
Very interesting samples and scratches woven 116.6bpm episodic burbling jiggler with a Howie Tee-ish beat, rasping King Curtis sax and Chic’s ‘dance’ among the many snippets (116.8bpm Radio Version/Instrumental too).

INSIDE MOVES ‘Can’t Live (Without Your Love) (W.B.R. Mix)’ (Wacky Dust Records RF 001)
Hemel Hempstead’s Joe Field joins the ranks of DJs turned producer with a burbling bass bumped and cool girl wailed spacey unhurried 120.8bpm garage-ish remake of Randy Muller’s Tamiko Jones oldie, flipped by an acappella introed fluttering and stuttering different house-ier 0-120.8bpm ‘strings’ and keyboards backed treatment, a good if specialist first effort.

S’EXPRESS ‘Mantra For A State Of Mind (Parts 1 And 2) Elevation Mix’ (Rhythm King LEFT 35T)
This girls sung again Seventies styles adapting (sorta ‘Stone Fox Chase’ meets Norman Whitfield and Mike Oldfield!) 120-119.8-0bpm marathon 11+ minute smoothly churning ever shifting snickety groove is driven remorselessly by an electronic jitter through its two continuously segued parts (guy moaned swirling 0-123.5bpm ‘Special And Golden‘ flip). DJs in fact were serviced with what will now become the remix, to be called the Levitation Mix although promoed initially as the house-ier 120.2bpm Club Vocal, Groove Mantra, and Mantra System (indecision was obviously rife, as I’ve also had several even earlier different test pressings).

THE OUTERLIMIT ‘Dance In A Daze’ (US UnderWorld Records AP 300)
Walking bass jolted calmly rattling and tapping 121.8bpm house instrumental, in separate though similar Our, Your, My, and (a deliberate misprint or merely illiterate?) There Versions.

JODY WATLEY with Eric B & Rakim ‘Friends (“Unity” Remix)’ (MCA Records MCAX 1352)
Beat losingly edited lurching jiggly 100bpm remix, by the currently inevitable Dave Dorrell & CJ Mackintosh (can the Jazzie B & Nellee Hooper remix be far behind?), with a Bassapella instead of the original flip.

RAVEN MAIZE ‘Forever Together (Remix)’ (RePublic Records LICT 014R)
Officially deleted already but still about, these four new mixes are the Mark Ryder remixed hip hop jittery lurching 115.5-0bpm Gittin’ Funky and similar though scratching 115.5bpm Gittin’ Raw Mixes, coupled by the bass snapped speedily bounding 123.6bpm Drum And Bass Mix (a previously unreleased original US version), and Tony Thorpe remixed freakily quavering urgent 123.4-123.2bpm Mad Jamaican Mix.
