BEATS & PIECES

BEATS PER MINUTE are not easy to calculate accurately without spending time on them, which is why Record Mirror’s DJ readers have over the last 11 years grown to depend upon the consistent reliability of those featured in this column, to preserve the continuity of which from now on only the reviews by JH will incorporate the BPM, records reviewed by our guest reviewers (whose own individual calculations using different methods have proved rather inconsistent) being fully BPM-ed in The Club Chart if and when they hit it — so keep checking that, as ever! . . . Black Box ‘I Don’t Know Anybody Else’, reviewed last week on import, is rushed out here (de/Construction Records PT 43480) with its Melody Mix retitled as Sample Free Mix and House Club as Free Sample Mix (both still 121bpm) . . . Digital Underground ‘The Humpty Dance’ (103½bpm) is also out here (BCM Records BCM 364 X) . . . London’s biggest selling pre-release last week, the now Pink Floyd ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’ melody overdubbed Innocence (featuring Gee Morris) ‘Natural Thing‘ (102¾bpm) made only a brief two week Club Chart appearance in its original mix on Collision last autumn . . . Princess lvori’s hot ‘Wanted‘, promoed here just in its original Jurgen Korduletsch mix, also exists in a rare Mantronix remix that only Tim Westwood seems to have obtained, so far — meanwhile, the original mix, plus the similarly promoed Out Of The Ordinary ‘Play It Again (The Los Ninos Remix)’, and seven other tracks of varying previous availability by Royal Delite, Cry Sisco, Logg, The Alliance, Technofusion, Catch 22, and Audio One have been compiled on a Supreme Records album tagged “the very best in upfront dance”, ‘Club It 90, Volume One‘ (CLUBLP 1) . . . Culture Beat ‘Der Erdbeermund’ here for some reason has its completely instrumental import B-side as UK A-side, relegating Jo Van Nelsen’s hauntingly atmospheric German muttering to the flip — however, he’s heard on Ben Liebrand’s brand new Spanish guitar picked and Bobby Byrd punctuated more rhythmically shuffling Magic Intro Mix (Epic 655633 8) and its slow intro lacking Magic Remix (117¾bpm), which latter UK B-side is again the A-side in Germany . . . Technotronic featuring Ya Kid K ‘Get Up! (Before The Night Is Over)’ has also been selling well in various David Morales remixes on two separate import pressings, an Italian one (New Music NMX 250) having his less urgent episodic Def Mix (123¾v bpm) plus the thumping, pumping Dance Action, Muted, Acappella and Instrumental Mixes (124bpm), while a better value US one (SBK V-19704) has his Def Mix and a Far East Mix (123¾bpm), the Album Version and 7-inch Edit (124bpm), plus his Techno Mix of ‘Pump Up The Jam’ (124¾bpm) . . . Eddie Gordon and Sue Jeoffroy (sic) will be looking after club promotion for the Atlantic, Ruthless, and Atco labels at the new East West division of WEA, while Fred Dove will continue servicing Warner Bros, Cold Chillin’ and Paisley Park product at the old parent company . . . DJs Pete Tong, Nicky Holloway, Danny Rampling and Paul Oakenfold, a heavyweight quartet of ‘Balearic’ founding fathers, declare now they’re going Back To Basics every Thursday at the Borderline, off London’s Charing Cross Road by Foyles . . . John Palmer has started upfront Sundays at Leicester’s Harveys . . . Breakers just below The Club Chart last week included Lonnie Gordon ‘Happenin’ All Over Again’, MC’s Logik ‘Peace & Unity (Remix)’, The House Crew ‘All We Wanna Do Is Dance’, Ben Mays ‘X-Rated’, 49ers ‘Touch Me (Hard-Core Remix)’, Princess Ivori ‘Wanted’, Louie Vega ‘Te Quiero’, Addis Posse ‘Let The Warriors Dance Retrip’, Fine Young Cannibals ‘I’m Not Satisfied’, Soft House Company ‘What You Need…’/’…A Little Piano’, Gwen Dickey ‘Wishing On A Star’, J.T Company ‘Don’t Deal With Us’ . . . Michael Jackson has bought a house in Santa Barbara, California, right next door to one just built and moved into by some friends of mine’s father — who, not unnaturally, is now worried about not only Wacko Jacko’s fans but also his menagerie! . . . IT’S SUCH A GOOD VIBRATION!

HOT VINYL
Reviewed by James Hamilton, Simon Harris and Norman Cook

TODD 1’S BREAK BEATS ‘Volume 1’ (Norman Cook)

VARIOUS ARTISTS ‘Jam Breaks’ (Norman Cook)

DR MOUTHQUAKE ‘Love On Love’ (Simon Harris)

ICE T ‘You Played Yourself’ (Simon Harris)

PISCES ‘Take Me Higher’ (Simon Harris)

JAY WILLIAMS ‘Sweat’ (Simon Harris)

RHYTHM OF LIFE ‘A Tropical Shower’ (Simon Harris)

SEDUCTION ‘Heartbeat’ (Simon Harris)

TAFURI ‘What Am I Gonna Do’ (Simon Harris)

RICH NICE ‘The Rhythm, The Feeling (12 Inch Version)’ (US Motown MOT-4691)
Distinctively out of the usual rap rut, this terrific buoyant new jack swing jiggler builds from a “here we go, ahh-huh” intro through “I got something for your mind, your body, and your soul” comments and then some bassily intoned title repetition while the main rap syncopation kicks in (two dubs too). Once it’s trucking it just don’t quit!

OLIMPIA ‘You Want My Love (Garage Mix)’ (114½bpm) (Italian Meeting ME 101)
De La Soul ‘Say No Go’-type rhythm driven and ‘Roots’-ish piano plonked rolling Chic-style girl group chanter, jaunty enough to do well, with an if anything brighter D. Version (115¾bpm) and more talkative short Another Version (114bpm) as flip.

LISA LEE ‘When Can I Call You (Long Distance 12-inch)’ (123¾bpm) (US Nugroove NG 032)
Phone tones bleeped whisperingly cooed and rapped bubbly sparse Roy Ayers-ish wriggler, created by Ronald Burrell with some ‘D’ Train-ish drive too in his Disconnected Dub, Local Call Radio Edit, Little Black Book Mix and 1-900-BURRELL versions, or a different more jittery chugging Tommy Musto & Frankie Bones British Telecom Mix (124bpm).

L.A. MIX featuring Kevin Henry ‘Love Together (1990 Mix)’ (121¾bpm) (Breakout USAT 677)
Widely considered to be their album’s most commercial track but apparently badly timed as a single release last autumn, right at the height of ‘orbital’ rave mania, the catchily cantering Philly Soul-style singalong anthem now gets a much starker and more house compatible Les Adams remix, flipped again by Frankie Knuckles & David Morales’ sinewy Banji Lovers Dub and American Lovers Vocal mixes (120¼bpm), still charted high by the likes of Danny Rampling.

TITIYO ‘After The Rain (New Life Mix)’ (109½bpm) (Arista RAIN 1)
Neneh Cherry’s half sister had her third consecutive smash in Sweden with this rumbling and tapping wriggly jitterer, weaving episodically through bursts of nervy pent-up vocal, while twiddly-diddly ragga rapping Papa D dominates the flip’s Ragamuffin Style, and the 7″ Version more lightly combines the best instrumental and vocal bits all at the same time. Sure to cause a stir, commercial copies (probably with a different catalogue number) are due next week.

VERNELL FOSTER ‘Love, Joy And Happiness (Original Club)’ (118-117¾bpm) (SBK.One 12SBK 7005)
Good girl wailed Adeva-ish garage treatment of Al Green’s oldie, flipped by less dense Jersey Techno (117¾-118bpm) and Jersey Techno Dub (118bpm) mixes, huge in The Club Chart while just on mailing list promo and out commercially without being further remixed after all.

SPECIAL EFFECTS ‘Good Loving’ (85bpm) (SSM Records SSMD 01, via Jet Star)
Excellent soulful girl led Nottingham group’s sultry groin grinding swayer, the type that would have been a wow in the early Eighties and which now thankfully seems to be on the way back (Instrumental flip).

PAULA BRION ‘That’s How He Stole My Love From You’ (121¾bpm) (US Tommy Boy TB 946)
Another Adeva-type good grittily wailed piano plonked and percussion fluttered garage trotter, originally created by Ronald Burrell and then ‘reproduced’ by Justin Strauss, in five mixes. “You like that?”, as she asks at the end of nearly all.

KYM MAZELLE ‘Was That All It Was (Philly Mix)’ (120bpm) (Syncopate 12SYX 32) The Jean Cam revival’s latest commercial A-side, and the one that’s selling, this classily cantering more soulful remix by Les Adams is coupled on promo by Judge Jules & Roy The Roach’s also greatly improved slower more percussively shuffling Orbital Mix (116½bpm), due separately as yet another A-side (12SYXX 32).

KIMIESHA HOLMES ‘Love Me True (‘Little’ Louie Vega Remix)’ (120bpm) (Kool Kat/Big Life KOOL-T-510)
Largely ignored when on Quark import back in November but now much improved by Louie’s special UK mix, this Sybil backed soulful girl worried simple sparse strider is pumped by a terrific sinuous beefy bassline, also in the Dub Mix (119¾bpm) but less pronounced in the flute trilled rambling Clubber’s Love-Dub Mix (120bpm).

LONNIE GORDON ‘Happenin’ All Over Again (Hip House Mix)’ (123½bpm) (Supreme Records SUPET 159)
Stock Aitken Waterman created bass rumbled breezy singalong commercial canterer, with a probably better more highly NRG-etic Italiano House Mix (122¼bpm) plus the Dave Randall remixed ‘Right Before My Eyes (The Blind House Mix)‘ (120¼bpm).

ESTER B ‘The Pleasure Of The Music (The Norman Cook Remix)’ (124½bpm) (S and M Records 12-SAV 105, via Pacific)
The previously imported, now Norman Cook remixed and more lightly littering, Esther Phillips-ishly quavered and grand piano jangled Italo skitterer is here flipped by a chanting overdubbed Turn That Mother Mix revamp of the more fiercely flurrying import mix plus the latter’s slower self explanatory Original Italian Instrumental Mix (124¼bpm).

MARK ROGERS ‘3 Steps In The House Of Tricks’ (Freetown Inc. STEP 3, via 01-748 0128)
Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley remixed tunefully trotting canterer in jerkily worried Step 1 Me (120¾bpm), instrumental Step 2 You and —hottest of all — Malcolm X overdubbed Step 3 Us (120½bpm) variations, with the oddly spelt but smoothly pulsing soulful ‘Twiillight For Some‘ (119¼bpm) too.

AFRIKADELIC ‘Piti Pata’ (119¾bpm) (Shake! IN 3 SHAKE!)
Craftily created by Gene & Jim as an archetypal afro throbber (in Sml, Med, and X-Lg lengths), this combines already familiar chants and rattling rhythms to end up potentially as the ultimate African party knees-up for pop jocks (even if it doesn’t have any ‘Burundi Black’!).

SIMON HARRIS starring DADDY FREDDY ‘Ragga House (All Night Long)’ (122bpm) (Living Beat Records SMASH 9)
No longer signed to ffrr, Simon is on his own label backing the world’s fastest raggamuffin rapper with a frisky hip house beat and simple catchy Sylvia Tella chorus, in four versions (none exactly sk’acid or sk’ouse, note).

THE HOUSE CREW ‘All We Wanna Do Is Dance’ (121v bpm) (Production House Records PNT 010)
Infectious “people – all we wanna do is dance” chanting Britfunk flavoured beefily bounding London hip house leaper, bubbling under The Club Chart for several weeks, flipped by its rap-less ‘The Groove’ and music-less ‘The Message‘.

AUDIO ONE ‘Journeys Into Rhythm EP’ (Room Service Records ROOM 001, via G&M, 01-509 2244)
Maurice Conroy’s one man band and label debut with a limited edition EP of simple synth washed house instrumentals, containing the scurrying ‘Total Science’ (122bpm), galloping ‘No Return‘ (128bpm), piano tinkled swirling ‘Falling‘ (123bpm) — so far, the warmest — and faster twittery ‘Falling (Re-Structured)‘ (125bpm).

ROYAL ORCHESTRA LTD. ‘Mykoos Melodee’ (122¼-122bpm) (US Fourth Floor Records FF 1109)
‘Voodoo Ray’ is among the break beats that variously accent the six different mixes of this basic house instrumental, all the exact same slow starting then fractionally decelerating speed apart from the steady We Can Jam If We Want 2 (122bpm).

GEORGIE RED ‘If I Say Stop (JJ’s Jazzy Meltdown Stories)’ (100¼bpm) (Swedish BTECH 12tek25)
Izit ‘Stories’-style weaving slow funky swayer, hottest in this Jazzy John flipside mix (with a Stonebridge Edit too) as the A-side’s Say Stone! Say Bass! Remix (117¾bpm) is a totally different faster organ chorded sparse percussive throbber.

LOUIE VEGA ‘Te Quiero’ (126bpm) (Spanish Konga Music CX-017)
No connection with any American of similar name, this jangling and pattering Spanish house instrumental is the work of DJs Marcos Salon and Tony Vilchez from a Barcelona discotheque that’s confusingly called Louie Vega, namechecked in butch automaton tones on the flip’s jerkier techno-type ‘House Of Vega‘ ( 125bpm).

LOVE CLUB featuring Jelly ‘Das Rote Haar’ (117½bpm) (German RCA PT43464)
With bird noises in the intro/outro and the same breathily muttered Francois Villon poetry as Culture Beat, this pleasant steadily loping brand new variation on the ‘Der Erdbeermund’ idea — this one translating as ‘The Red Hair’ — is the co-creation of top German club DJ Jens ‘Jelly’ Lissat and Peter Harder (instrumental and dub too).

KOMTUR ‘Hans Von Stoffeln (Mein Schloss Ist Fertig)’ (119½bpm) (German EMI 1C 060-203687 6)
Meanwhile, confusingly another slightly older Jens Lissat/Peter Harder co-creation in similar style, this less obviously Culture Beat-like loper has a different muttering German narration and no bird noises (but again instrumental and dub variations too).

BABYFACE ‘Tender Lover (Extended Version)’ (102-101½bpm) (Solar MCAT 1389, via MCA Records)
Recently huge in the US but, for many ears here, blandly routine jolting swingbeat jiggler, helped by Bobby Brown’s rapping guest appearance and increased latin-type impetus as it progresses (Instrumental and Undercover Mix too).

DIONNE ‘Your Lies (The Big Club Mix)’ (121¾-123v bpm) (CityBeat CBE 1248)
Komix’s typically simple synth stabbed and bass burbled plaintive canterer still has its chunkily chorded The Big Dub (122¼bpm) but is also flipped here by the Trevor Fung & Nick Halkes created break beats woven ‘Bassed On Dionne’ (119¼v bpm).

SHE ROCKERS ‘Jam It Jam (Superman Crew Jam)’ (113bpm) (Jive JIVE T 233)
An instant and then enduring hit on promo since November but oddly needing more support now it’s finally out here, this Pascal Gabriel remixed Chic ‘I Want Your Love’ driven jittery rolling female rap is flipped by its Instrumental and DJ Crypt’s messier jiggly scratching Hip Hop Mix (112¾bpm).

MARK IV ‘You’ve Got To Change It’ (118bpm) (US Tuff City TUF 128057)
Refreshingly old fashioned soulful male group wailed simple strider created in his early Seventies style by Patrick Adams (instrumental too).

JAM TRONIK ‘Another Day In Paradise (The Sidney Mix)’ (109¼bpm) (German ZYX Records ZYX 6265-12)
Phil Collins’ ironically worded recent US smash now calmly crooned by a multi-tracked girl in a gradually winding up then steadily chugging pleasant Europop treatment, flipped by a ‘Break 4 Love’ tempoed gruff guy muttered more electro ‘Get On The Raze‘ variation.

JOMANDA ‘Don’t You Want My Love (Street Style)’ (121bpm) (RCA PT 43406)
Created by the Backroom Music Productions team as usual with almost gospel-style wailing by the girls, this straight ahead striding New York disco swinger is here in just this and the Bizzy Ass Breakdown and Funky Ass Bass mixes, the latter two remaining as flip to The Nude Mix (121½bpm) (RCA PT 43408), a separate new more choppily chugging UK remix by Graeme Park & Mike Pickering.

THE CHIMES ‘Heaven (American Remixes)’ (112¼bpm) (CBS 655638 6)
Yet more mixes, this time Dave Morales’ stuttering ‘special’ introed then funkily jiggling episodic sparse Special Mix and tighter possibly preferable Physical Mix.

49ERS ‘Touch Me (Hard-Core Remix)’ (122½bpm) (Fourth & Broadway 12 BRX 157)
Feverish panting and groaning overlaid marketing remix of the ‘Rock-A-Lott’ bounder.

A’ME LORAIN ‘Whole Wide World (Wingate 12-inch House Remix)’ (105bpm) (US RCA 9099-1-RD)
Paula Abdul-ish in its squeakily juddering Elliot Wolff 12-inch (105½v bpm) and Radio Mix (105¼bpm) A-side versions, the ‘True Love’ movie soundtrack featured tune has exploded here thanks to this remorseless ‘Last Night A DJ Saved My Life’-ishly tempoed chunkily lurching flipside version and its Wingate House Dub Remix (104¾bpm).

EDIE BRICKELL ‘What I Am’ (88¼bpm) (EB 001)
Edie Brickell And New Bohemians’ hit from last spring white labelled in another gently jiggling Soul II Soul ‘Keep On Movin’’-ish rhythm synched running mix, like but not the same as the previously reviewed ‘Edie Circle’, with a slower Instrumental (87¾bpm).

RENEGADE SOUNDWAVE ‘Probably A Robbery (Extended Mix)’ (109½bpm) (Mute S12 MUTE 102)
Totally unlike the originally circulated uptempo instrumental, this nasal guy intoned mildly amusing if repetitive Hollywood Argyles ‘Alley-Oop’-ish rolling pop mix is merely flipped by a fluid bass burbled Turntable Scratch Mix (124bpm) of that instrumental, rather than by any version of the actually more in demand ‘Ozone Breakdown‘ this time.

HI TEK 3 featuring Ya Kid K ‘Spin That Wheel (First Feel Mix)’ (128bpm) (The Brothers Organisation 12 BORG 1, via BMG)
Rush Release record plugging company owners Ian & Nick Titchener’s label debuts with this Technotronic associated trio’s inevitably similar “wooh yeah” punctuated Belgian hip house leaper, in fact fronted by that group’s current 17 years old female rapper — making it all the more useful (Radio Version and Dub Mix too).
