BEATS AND PIECES
‘HARDCORE UPROAR‘ by Together, massive mainly up north for those few who so far have found it, has been snapped up for wider release by ffrr . . . CBS apparently will soon be known worldwide as Columbia, the name of its US label which previously always clashed with a once famous UK logo owned by EMI . . . Yazz ‘Treat Me Good’ (118¼bpm) on commercial pressings is flipped by the jerkily shuffling ‘I Want Your Love‘ (109½bpm) and its instrumental, while Monie Love’s commercial 12-inch adds the appropriately titled ‘Roots’ (95/47½bpm), a jerkily booming real heavy reggae rap . . . Queen Latifah’s already twice reviewed though still only promoed ‘Come Into My House’ is confusingly labelled, in six mixes on 33⅓rpm pre-release since April but to little initial reaction, having a UK remixed Side 1 with Richie Rich’s Mix A (119½bpm), Orbital’s Mix B and a Richie Rich Dub Mix C (119¼bpm), plus a US remixed Side 2 with Julian Peres’ Mix D, Fast Eddie’s Mix E, and producer DJ Mark The 45 King’s Mix F (all 119¾bpm) . . . LFO ‘LFO’ on its fully labelled pressing turns out to be in The Leeds Warehouse Mix . . . Danny Madden’s previously white labelled seven inch, now that it too is out commercially, proves to be in Dancin’ Danny D’s Radio Edit and Carl McIntosh’s 7 inch Mix . . . LPs previously reviewed in full on import and now out here include The Chimes’ ‘The Chimes’ (CBS 466481-1) and Eric B & Rakim ‘Let The Rhythm Hit ‘Em’ (MCA Records MCG 6097) . . . Tim Raidl has just started his own UK underground house label, Chill Records, and is updating his strictly underground-only DJ mailing list at Soundz Wicked, 163 Marsh Road, Leagrave, Luton, Bedfordshire LU3 2QQ (0582 493380) . . . Chris Johns is similarly specific about the jocks he wants, just indie/alternative, for the mailing list at Secret Promotions, Unit 132, Canalot Production Studios, 222 Kensal Road, London W10 . . . DJ Big H’s fortnightly Friday Harry’s House night at Windsor’s The Old Trout in Barry Avenue, after two and a half successful years, this Friday (July 6) changes name to The Strongroom and features The Brand New Heavies live . . . Ben & Andy the Boilerhouse boys start Reasons To Be Cheerful at Brixton’s Fridge this Saturday (7), replacing the Boom night . . . Monday (9) finds the monthly Muthaland female rap night at Wardour Street’s Brain (opposite the Swiss Centre) in Soho, starring the Cookie Crew and She Rockers along with DJs Miss Bliss, Wendy K, Vie Marshall and more . . . Sybil, a college qualified broadcaster who worked in radio for three years, has a cousin Maxine Jones who is a member of En Vogue, while her mother Willi Lynch (née Brown) was in Sixties girl group the Debutantes and her aunt Shelly Brown has just been singing at the Montreux Jazz Festival — shades of the Whitney Houston and Dionne Warwick relationships? . . . Lance Ellington is the son of Fifties band leader/vocalist Ray Ellington, famous for supplying funny voices and, more importantly, the featured musical interludes (along with those of harmonica player Max Geldray) to radio’s legendary ‘Goon Show’ . . . Sharon Redd’s sister Pennye Ford, featured on Snap’s ‘Ooops Up’, is also to be heard on a currently promoed and pop aimed Mirage-like Soul II Soul medley, Rave ‘Soul On Soul‘ (Jive) . . . DJ/Massivo bassist Jon Jules was merely dropping off some records at an Our Price shop when he was recognised and mobbed by a crowd of female fans, only just escaping with his clothes intact! . . . KICKIN’!
HOT VINYL
TRICKY DISCO ‘Tricky Disco’ (123¼bpm) (W.A.R.P./Outer Rhythm WAP 7, via Rhythm King)
Huge already on white label and in such great demand that it’ll really explode when released fully in a fortnight, this apparently Berlin originated ultra silly Newcleus-like smurfs punctuated, and indeed Tyrone Brunson ‘The Smurf’ era reviving, old fashioned bubbly electro bleeper (flipped on promo by a chanting monks washed Past Tricky’s Bedtime Mix) is so madly jaunty it might even cross over to the kids market and be massive… and then, if cleverly marketed as a cuddly cartoon character, say, Tricky could end up as another Jive Bunny. Wikki Wikki!
COLDJAM featuring GRACE ‘Last Night A DJ Saved My Life’ (Big Wave BWR T39)
Rush release here for the Rome recorded excellent less rigidly structured remake of lndeep’s 1982 disco classic, still as recently reviewed on import in its loosely shuffling The Groove Mix (110¼bpm), trotting House Mix (112bpm), and funky drummed ‘The Last Night‘ (112¼bpm) variation, but the BPMs now differ slightly for some reason.
COURTNEY PINE featuring Carroll Thompson ‘I’m Still Waiting’ (86½bpm) (Mango 12MNG 749)
Hard on the heels of the remixed Diana Ross original comes this timely Aswad co-produced chunkily jogging reggae-ish treatment sweetly wailed by Carroll around some weaving squeaky sax lines, flipped by the also reggae-ish Augustus ‘Gussie’ Clarke produced undulating attractive instrumental ‘Be Mine Tonight‘ (93bpm) and its jerkier dubwise Version.
THINK TANK ‘A Knife And A Fork (The Massively Parallel Mix)’ (109bpm) (US Hakattak Records HA 1000)
Bizarrely advising “A knife and a fork, a bottle and a cork, that’s the way to stone New York”, this repetitive girl intoned drily drummed burbling jiggly percussion groove is naggingly compulsive and invigorating, flipped by the JB brass riff based jerky fierce ‘Hack One (The Internet Worm Mix)‘ (121¼bpm), equally unusual — producer Freddy LaMarr’s gotta be weird and/or wired! Like the record says, that was fun, let’s do it again!
JUNGLE BROTHERS ‘Doin’ Our Own Dang’ (Eternal W9754T)
Due commercially next week but hot on promo already, this almost old Sugarhill Gang style lead swapping husky rap (with a verse by Monie Love, who’d missed the ‘plane back to London!) is in a very jauntily chugging Raw Silk ‘Do It To The Music’ based Do It To The JB’s Mix (114½bpm), flipped by a different drier sparse Norman Cook Remix (112¾bpm) and slower break beat jiggled good Richie Fermé Remix (104¾bpm).
REGGAE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA featuring JAZZY JOYCE ‘Lovely Thing’ (97¾bpm) (Mango 12MNGX 742, via Island)
Created by Steel Pulse founder Mykaell S. Riley and remixed by the Boilerhouse boys Ben & Andy, this exciting strings scraped and chunky beats rumbled vigorous churning jiggler is soulfully moaned by lightly husky Mykaell with just bursts of Joyce’s rap prodding the last half, as also in the flip’s Instrumental/Rap, the effect not surprisingly being like a livelier Soul II Soul.
JAY MONDI & THE LIVING BASS ‘Get Sweet Love (Ghetto Mix)’ (104bpm) (10 Records TENX 315)
Co-penned by producer Chris Paul with his singing girlfriend Julie, this stabbing strings prodded and tubular bells tinkled Soul II Soul-ish swirling and swaying wriggly jogger has taken off fast on promo ahead of full release next week, flipped (7″ Edit too) by their recent Mary Jane Girls reviving chunkier piano jangled ‘All Night Long (Remix)’ (103bpm).
MR. LEE ‘I Like Girls (Club Mix)’ (105¼bpm) (Jive JIVE T 250)
This ‘Funkin’ For Jamaica’-ishly started then, amongst other familiar ingredients, slowed down ‘D’ Train-ishly rolling funky rap makes a useful change of pace from his hip house style, flipped (at least on promo) by an alternative thumpingly chugging Lee’s Club Mix (104¾bpm) which builds up considerable power.
SMOOTH & SIMMONDS ‘The 4 Seasons’ (119¼bpm) (WF 002)
This piping, fluting and bleeping drain gurgled smoothly shuffling (and fractionally fluctuating) synth and piano instrumental is in a sort of ambient/washing machine/electro house style, with a more aggressively electro Factory Mix (119¾bpm) flip, that’ll probably be biggest up north although it’s already selling in London — where back in April they created some initial interest with the more hurriedly house like ‘The Experiment’ (122bpm) (LAW-101) and its sparser washing machine-ish ‘Our Theme‘ (119½bpm) flip, the latter still probably worth finding by bleep freaks. Both are on info lacking white labels.
THE UTOPIA PROJECT ‘File # 1’ (116½bpm) (US Nugroove NG-051)
On a Rheji Burrell created instrumental four-tracker are not only this sparse electronically burbling, pulsing and plinking loper in semi washing machine style but also, with a rigid logic, the more tightly striding and tapping ‘File # 2‘ (115½bpm), acidically twittering quite melodic ‘File # 3‘ (116¾bpm), and keyboards stabbed bassily rolling ‘File # 4‘ (107¾bpm), none in fact being inter-related.
DUNAMIS featuring SAHIRAH ‘You Can Make It’ (117½bpm) (US United Sounds Of America USA 919)
Sounding like Vince Montana without the vibes, this Michael Mason created (and Reynald ‘Crazy Frenchman’ Deschamps co-mixed) bassily rattling canterer is washed by lush organ chords with soulful girls squalling through the central section of its Vocal Mix, or a more instrumental and instantly driving shorter Love DJ Mix.
DE LA SOUL ‘Tread Water Remix’ (Italian Flying Records International FIN 008)
Remixed by Sweden’s Stonebridge but out in Italy, the typically oddball “daisy age” narrative rap may not be one of their most immediately compulsive in its busy bass and shuffling drum throbbed Pumpin Mix (116½bpm) although the catchier Mr. Squire Mix (113¾bpm), which really ought to be called Mr. Squirrel to match the lyrics, and similar syndrum pinged Mr. Fish Mix (113¾bpm) are more chunkily chugging in early Eighties funk style, coupled with (likewise from SweMix) a Denniz Pop & Mopz Below created familiar tracks woven useful and neat enough if not that spectacular ‘De La Soul Megamix‘ (110-110¼bpm).
K-SOLO ‘Spellbound’ (103½bpm) (US Atlantic 0-86198)
Kevin ‘K-Solo’ Madison raps and spells out a bass bumped funkily lurching wordplay rap that’s quite clever and catchy (it’s been simmering away for a while), flipped by the more nervily jolting wordy ‘Real Solo Please Stand Up‘ (107bpm), both with Instrumentals too.
MARINA VAN-ROOY ‘Sly One (Pickering Park Remix)’ (121¾bpm) (de/Construction Records PT 43824)
The flatly lisping, muttering and cooing girl now supported by a jittery trotting Mike Pickering & Graeme Park remix, coupled with also new thankfully more instrumental lurching Krakow and bright bass driven so-called Original Mixes (125¼bpm), all pretty lightweight.
THE ORB ‘A Huge Ever Growing Remix’ (W.A.U! Mr. Modo Recordings/Big Life BLR T 27)
Remixing last November’s even freakier ‘A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules The World From The Centre Of The Ultraworld’ (yes, really!), this tempoless ambience backed Minnie Riperton ‘Loving You’ introed then eventually galloping monotonous instrumental adds some cock crow and other ambient sound effects but doesn’t really go anywhere in its Orbital Dance Mix (125bpm), flipped by an only briefly rhythmic Orbital 9am Radio Mix and totally ambient throbbing Aubrey Mix Mk 1 (66/122bpm).
MASTER ACE ‘Me And The Biz (Extended Version)’ (88½bpm) (US Cold Chillin’/:r 0-21556)
Although the A-side, this Cymande ‘The Message’ based Biz Markie guying wordy Marley Marl production (Edit too) is nowhere near as hot here as the Westwood plugged flip’s D.J. Mister Cee produced much more tense JB-type jerkily jiggling ‘I Got Ta (LP Version)‘ (104bpm), and its rawer funky Dub Version (104¼bpm).
‘Balearic Beats Volume 3’ (London In The Area Records)
Another of the currently fast selling bootlegs, this 45rpm coupling pairs an odd slowly thumping (as if it’s at 33⅓rpm by mistake) Breakdown Mix of PHIL COLLINS ‘Mama’ (86½bpm) with a timely new chugging remix of the actual original INDEEP ‘Last Night A DJ Saved My Life’ (110½bpm).
F.P.I. PROJECT presents ‘Risky’ (121¼bpm) (Rumour Records RUMAT 14, via Pacific)
About for weeks, the disappointing ‘Going Back To My Roots’ follow-up is a Tina Chris sung and guy muttered rather disjointedly booming Italo house bounder lacking a memorable song, but with a much better beefier honking instrumental ‘Risky Is Rhythm‘ (120½bpm) and short unaccompanied jangly ‘Risky Is Piano‘.
MELANCHOLY MAN ‘Born To Rock’ (125bpm) (Warriors Dance WAFT 15, via Spartan)
Kid Batchelor co-mixed frantically tumbling and pattering freestyle racer with breathily stuttered title line repetition (which might be mistaken for “bum’s rush”!) in its Secret Rap Mix and more twittery Born To Dub Mix, or instrumental in its pirates preferred Rocking Dubwise Mix and fully acidic Beethoven Bushman Mix.
MICHAEL JACKSON/SNAP ‘The Power Of Human Nature’ (97bpm) (MJ-001)
One of a sudden spate of hot bootlegs, this cleverly combines Michael’s mushily mumbling and moaning old ‘Human Nature’ with the jiggly rhythm of ‘The Power’, flipped by a repetitively looped cowbell clonking and rattling ‘Jungle Beat’ (122¼bpm) mixture of Incredible Bongo Band-type New York break beats.
SUZANNE VEGA ‘Oh Susanna’ (99¼-99bpm) (S&B 12SUS 001)
Although starting out as a speculative and genuinely unauthorised white label pressing, in no way a record company scam, this Bristol originated synchronization of Suzanne’s ‘Tom’s Diner’ (from which came the “de da dah de” humming used in both ‘£20 To Get In’ and ‘Party Children’) over Soul II Soul-ish gently rumbling beats, alone on the instrumental flip (99bpm), has taken off so fast that it has been snapped up for legal release by Suzanne’s actual label, A&M — rather as its makers hoped, all along!
