LAST MONDAY’S Creative Images/DJ Association of Ireland DJ Convention ’90, the first ever held on the Emerald Isle, attracted a huge number of jocks from both Southern and Northern Ireland (all of whom wanted record company mailing list recognition, unsurprisingly, during a long seminar debate that really was much better than most), and can only be considered a success despite many delays which pushed the night’s entertainment — local mixing champ DJ Mek, Cutmaster Swift, E-ZEE Possee, Tongue ‘n’ Cheek, Edwin Starr, Jaki Graham, Darryl Pandy, Hazell Dean, and bill topping Sybil — into such progressively late time slots that the midsummer dawn had broken spectacularly over the sea before it was over! . . . Danny Madden’s ‘Facts Of Life’, contrary to information given out with its seven inch promo, was only remixed by Dancin’ Danny D and in fact was produced by Carl McIntosh — who has alone also totally produced the upcoming new Loose Ends album, due on 10 Records in September with a single first in August . . . Everything But The Girl ‘Take Me (Remix)’, reviewed as a promo last week, is due commercially now (blanco y negro NEG44T), while Innocence ‘Silent Voice’ is not due until mid July . . . ‘Dream Come True’, hottest track on The Brand New Heavies’ album, is being 12-inched . . . Warren Cooper is starting up First Cut Promotions at 30 Florence Road, Maidstone, Kent ME16 8EL (mobile ‘phone 0860-773227), his DJ mailing list being serviced initially with the new Orange Hill label’s black dance music releases . . . Alix Edwards has set up a DJ mailing list at President Records, Broadmead House, 21 Panton Street, London SW1Y 4DR (071-839 4672), where she’s hoping soon to have signed some rather ‘harder’ hip hop and house releases, including a deal with a well known New York label . . . DJs, judging from last week’s Club Chart, seem to agree in preferring the Long Mix of Kicking Back with Taxman’s ‘Everything’ . . . London’s Brain club is organising another trip to Iceland from July 19-22 taking with them Beats International, Orbital, Mr Monday, If and Graeme Park amongst others. As well as the three club nights the Sugarcubes will be playing (071 437 7301 for details) . . . Liverpool goes to Brighton for Club Underground at the Zap on July 2 with DJs Harvey, Rev, Andy Carroll and guest PAs . . . The Shamen present Synergy this Friday June 29 at ULU in Malet St, London with special guests Coldcut.

KENNY THOMAS ‘Outstanding’ (101 bpm) (Cooltempo COOLX 215)
Yet another oldie revived in more than one current remake (Rich Nice & Jeff Redd’s having been recently reviewed), this 1983 Gap Band classic was a long enduring Fatback ‘I Found Lovin”-like club ‘sleeper’ which filled floors for years without crossing over into the pop chart, so that now it’s being greeted by today’s generation as a brand new song in this mournful tapping and thumping treatment, still remorselessly rumbling and pushing but to my mind only approaching the power of the original in the flip’s percussively jiggling sparse Macattack Mix (101¼bpm), which builds a really infectious nagging syncopation (Acappella too). Incidentally, the promo’s label introduces a redesigned Cooltempo logo.

LETA DAVIS ‘You’ll Never Get To Heaven (Club Mix)’ (95¼bpm) (Bass Records BSS 12-10, via Champion)
Another revived oldie in more than one current remake, sadly now stomping 54-46’s version into the subsoil, this also Soul II Soul-ishly tempoed though more winsomely cooed gentle rolling Smith & Mighty-type treatment of Dionne Warwick’s 1964 Bacharach & David penned ‘You’ll Never Get To Heaven (If You Break My Heart)’ is in a birds chirruped more sparsely sweet Jamaican Mix too, and a related stark ‘Joey’s Groove‘.

CLUBLAND feat QUARTZ ‘Let’s Get Busy (Pump It Up)’ (121¾bpm) (Supreme Records SUPET 171)
Produced originally for Swedish release by East London’s ‘Meltdown’ makers Quartz, this “move your body” moaning guy chanted sturdy bass driven Marshall Jefferson penned episodic pounder has been on an only single sided promo here for ages as the import flip’s Art Of Noise adapting ‘Beat’n The Art Summer Of Love’ was, unavailable for UK release, but now it’s out fully at last and selling fast, newly flipped instead by the Liberace quote introed and punctuated jiggly trotting ‘The World Of Music (Liberation Mix)‘ (119¾bpm).

KEITH SWEAT ‘Give All My Love To You’ (Vintertainment/Elektra EKT60)
Keith’s self produced truly superb soul drenched album, made so good by his exaggeratedly overwrought impassioned enunciation (surely now putting him up amongst the most distinctive stylists in black music?), has the currently also 12-inched whiningly moaned and muttered P’funky swingbeat ‘Make You Sweat’ (105bpm), romantically agonised chunkily rolling ‘Love To Love You‘ (102bpm), tensely introed then snappily jiggled rolling swingbeat ‘Your Love‘ (50¾-101½bpm) and its mumbled more rawly go go-ish ‘Your Love — Part 2‘ (102½bpm), lovely smoochy ‘Come Back’ (48½bpm), romantically swaying long ‘Merry Go Round’ (66bpm), torturedly weaving Gerald Levert duetted ‘Just One Of Them Thangs’ (65¾bpm), tortuous ‘I Knew That You Were Cheatin’ (50¾bpm), tenderly crawling ‘I’ll Give All My Love To You’ (35/70bpm).

PRINCE ‘The Future (Remix)’ (124¾bpm) (Warner Bros 7599-21570-0)
Only on Germany pressed European import despite being remixed in London by Mark Moore and William Orbit, this muttering sparse electronic throbber is washed as it progresses by attractive synth tones, swirling strings, thunderthumbed bass and chinky guitar, flipped by the likewise remixed and ‘Batman’ culled slinkily lurching sinister ‘Electric Chair‘ (101½bpm), not necessarily essential for club play but certainly more danceable than much of his stuff and a must for fans (although his imminent new UK single is something called ‘Thieves In The Temple‘).

DREAM WARRIORS ‘Wash Your Face In My Sink’ (96¼/192¾bpm) (4+B’ 12 BRW 183)
Due fully next week but already moving fast on pre-release, this guys spoken/sung (rather than rapped in the accepted sense) brilliantly different frantic though also half tempo joyous jumper has a jerky reggae style intro before racing off at a well known Latin boogaloo lick that Sixties veterans will enjoy identifying, totally wild and wonderful in Radio and BF3 Mixes, flipped by the early Seventies funk jittered more routinely rapped ‘Built For The 90’s‘ (121½bpm) in Radio and Bassdrop Mixes.

BODY ‘Touch Me Up (Club Version)’ (103bpm) (US MCA Records MCA-24039)
Wiggling along to an En Vogue-ish groove, these three girls wail with powerful gospel intensity around a piano plonked bumpily lurching bass beat that ebbs and flows but never stops driving (Instrumental and Dub too), strong stuff.

THE ROCK POSSE Featuring FONDA RAE ‘Do You Want My Love?’ (US Flatbush Beat FBR 9001)
Fonda follows her guest appearance with Larry Joseph & Science by sweetly soloing — or, actually, multi-tracking — for the Rock Posse (Gary Pozner of Tom Tom Club, Warren Rosenstein and Ariel Powers) on their attractive coolly loping swinger, differently treated in lushly shuffling Smooth R&B (117bpm), lovely Sixties flavoured Disco Radio (117½bpm), and more sturdily striding Pal Joey’s Jazzy (117¼bpm) Mixes, all with Kevin DiSimone’s tootling trumpet, or the flip’s less subtle though quite jaunty episodic long cantering Gary’s Ecstasy Soca Dub (122¼bpm) and, rather missing the point, monotonous rigidly bounding House Mix (121½-121bpm).

THE DEFF BOYZ (featuring Tony Mac) ‘Swing’ (109¾bpm) (Supreme Records SUPET 175)
UK based Dutch DJs and musicians, Jay Raveel, PeeVee Contach and ‘Baby’ Quest are now newly augmented by rapper Tony Mac for this Snap-pily jiggling ‘The Power’-like chugger (quoting Maggie Thatcher as saying “The aim of this government is to make everyone as miserable as possible”), which was initially white labelled without Tony in the flip’s Original Mix (with an instrumental B-side) appropriately enough on Power Records (PAUL X 94).

PSYCHOTROPIC ‘Only For The Headstrong’ (115bpm) (Raw Bass Records 12 RBASS 003, via Pacific)
Enrico ‘King Enri’ Yori and his brother Pluto’s new label is making most noise with this “music is hypnotizin’” girl started then organ toned synth burbled simple jiggly instrumental drifter, woven from several familiar elements, interestingly flipped by the washing machine and funk fusing — so fairly unusual, let’s face it! — jittery hip house-ish ‘Out Of Your Head‘ (118¾bpm), well worth checking too.

THEY WHO MOVE featuring Nadee Jones ‘Sounds Underground (Club Mix)’ (1251/2bpm) (Profile PROFT 299)
Also with guest vocalist Sione Ayers, this Keith & André Williams produced very vigorous bassily galloping hip house rap from Los Angeles actually namechecks various Eastern US cities and revives ‘Move Your Body’-type backing clichés from the earliest 1986 house hits, in fact to terrifically exciting effect, with a tighter unison rapped so called Dub (125¾bpm) and its Instrumental. Trying not to move your body is the trick — stay still if you can!

THE CREW featuring Freedom Williams ‘Get Dumb! (Free Your Body)’ (121bpm) (US Vendetta Records 75021 7037 1)
Originally credited to Seduction although the girls had obviously never been anywhere near it, this now slightly re-titled and newly remixed snickety driving hip house-ish leaper is in samples studded and topical guy rapped episodic long The Clivilles/Cole Club Mix, jaunty percussion clacked instrumental The Clivilles/Cole Master Mix, and funky drummered The Hip House Bonus Beats (121¼bpm), worth getting again.

BOO-YAA T.R.I.B.E. ‘Psyko Funk’ (4+B’ 12 BRW 179)
The sumo sized rapping Samoans will probably have a better chart chance with this Tone Loc-ish lazily drawled pattering shuffler, remixed here by Nomad Soul in Hip Hop You Don’t Stop Mix and Nomad Re-Touch Mix versions (110bpm), and by Coldcut in Coldcut Cybermix and Coldcut Drum Mix versions (110½bpm).

RICHARD ROGERS ‘Can’t Stop’ (US SAM Records SAM50)
On this very pleasant real soul album are a full length version of the current Marshall Jefferson created exquisite Seventies-style “real instruments” backed ‘Can’t Stop Loving You’ (105¼bpm), plus the Marshall remixed gorgeous dead slow ‘Anything You Want’ (25¼bpm) and cantering ‘Spread A Little Love‘ (121½bpm), the lovely Joizae Smith duetted tenderly rolling ‘Sweet Essence‘ (88¼bpm), Marley Marl remixed jiggly lush ‘(I’ll Be Your) Dream Lover‘ (100¾bpm), Backroom Productions remixed Colonel Abrams-ish dated house ‘Bed Of Roses‘ (116¾bpm), Jesus Wayne created slow starting then Vandross-ish ‘Take Care Of You’ (109bpm) and swaying ‘Crazy In Love‘ (79½bpm). BCM Records are rush releasing their own pressing (BCM 460) with a different sleeve photo.

M.C. TUNES Vs 808 STATE ‘The Only Rhyme That Bites’ (125¼bpm) (ZTT ZANG 3T)
Only hitting The Club Chart in the wake of its pop success as too ridiculously fast to be cool, this saliva spraying frantic white boy rap is excitingly prodded by bursts of the theme from ‘The Big Country’ (a nowadays sadly never seen though terrific star-studded 1958 western), flipped by 808 State’s alternative ‘The Only Rhyme That Bytes’ instrumental treatment.

FORTRAN 5 ‘Crazy Earth (Remix)’ (Mute Do Brasil MB 110360)
Promoed on Brazil’s version of the Mute label (its name translates as Mute Of Brazil!), this bassily thrumming and pulsing instrumental is now in Acid Rain (118¼bpm), fractionally faster L’Essence De Syd and Music For Ice Caps (118½bpm) remixes, superseding the originally promoed waves washed brighter bubbling and mumbling Full Greenhouse Effect (117½bpm) and synth thrummed trotting Global Warming (117¾bpm) mixes (Mute Do Brasil MB 301258), which in fact briefly attracted more DJ play at the start of May during a crowded Club Chart week and so only bubbled under.

MANIC MC’s featuring Ricky Lyte ‘The Beat (The Main Event)’ (122¼bpm) (MCA Records MCAT 1429)
Veteran rave DJ Colin Hudd has taken a year between recordings before returning with this piano plonked and cymbal schlurped bassily thrumming frisky hip house rap, efficient enough though rather routine, flipped by more beefily flurrying instrumental The Beginning Of Saga (123¾bpm) and piano rippled Jazz Instrumental (122¼bpm) versions.

MYSTIC KNIGHTS ‘The Wrath Of Khan’ (125bpm) (W.A.U! Mr. Modo Recordings MWS 029T)
Nothing, other than its similar title, to do with the ‘Star Trek’ movie that by chance is being shown on ITV this Wednesday, this dubs black activist Malik Farrakhan’s hectoring speech (in which he criticises Michael Jackson and Prince for ignoring the South African situation) over an unhurriedly striding freestyle techno burbler, in Long Play Mix, Farra Khan’s Revenge, and Mystic ‘Power’ Mix versions.

MAJOR PROBLEMS ‘(The Effects Can Last Forever)’ (US Nugroove NG 052)
Titled to make an anti-drugs statement, this Lenny Dee & Ralphie Dee created instrumental house EP is however ironically acidic, with the pounding ‘Overdose (The Final Trip)’ (125¾bpm), hollow washing machine-type ‘Flashbacks (Version)‘ (120bpm), throbbing ‘The Rush (Freakout Mix)‘ (122bpm), and twittering ‘Paranoia (The Bad Trip)‘ (120-81bpm).

SHUT UP AND DANCE ‘Lamborghini’ (129½bpm) (Shut Up And Dance Records SUAD 4)
Raggamuffin harangue introed then whistle blasts and finally Eurythmics ‘Sweet Dreams’-like rhythm driven scampering fast (though unrushed) sparse bounder, flipped by the huskily rapped quite political Martin Luther King punctuated jerkily tapping ‘A Change Soon Come‘ (121bpm) plus its Instrumental.

ERIC B. & RAKIM ‘Let The Rhythm Hit ‘Em’ (US MCA Records MCA-6416)
Now undermining sales of its hot title track single, slippery scratcher Eric Barrier and husky rapper William ‘Rakim’ Griffin’s latest album has the warfare introed dry drum thumped ‘Run For Cover’ (107¾bpm), tensely tugging ‘Set ‘Em Straight‘ (99¾bpm), rumbling choppy ‘Keep ‘Em Eager To Listen‘ (95bpm), old school style scratching ‘Eric B. Made My Day‘ (107¾bpm), word spitting nervy frantic ‘No Omega‘ (116bpm), trickily wriggling tongue twisting ‘Untouchables‘ (116bpm), sombrely muttered rolling jittery ‘In The Ghetto‘ (94bpm), similar ‘Step Back‘ (94bpm), story telling slow lurching ‘Mahogany‘ (83½bpm), and wordily swirling ‘Let The Rhythm Hit ‘Em‘ (109bpm).

E-ZEE POSSEE ‘The Sun Machine (Someday Morning Mix)’ (118¼bpm) (More Protein PROTX 412, via Virgin)
Remixed by Jon Marsh of The Beloved and proving more popular than the previously promoed slightly slower Master and Charlie Brown Mixes, this Fwa and Marcella (as it turns out, rather than MC Kinky) sung now totally different throbbingly thumped chugger is flipped by Jon’s instrumental Dream Machine and drily croaking Aniff Cousins muttered Rapped Up Warm Mix.

ORCHESTRA JB ‘Free Spirit (Slow Burn)’ (101½bpm) (Rumour Records RUMAT 19, via Pacific)
Now calling himself a less confusing Jimmy rather than James Brown (in fact his real name), the London music publisher’s plaintive harmonica and Loleatta Holloway-like comments punctuated swaying piano jogger has a mid-Seventies style rhythm reminiscent of Al Green & Arthur Baker’s ‘Love Is The Message’, with a chunkier instrumental ‘Spirit Groove’ too, but is selling also for the flip’s ‘On A Love Groove 1990 (Get Your Funky Kicks)’ (108¾bpm) remake of his ‘Pump Up The Volume’-ishly tempoed ‘sleeper’ from more than a year ago.
