BEATS & PIECES

GRAHAM MEACHAM and his best friend, 19 years old Paul Brookman were the DJs on the ill fated Thames riverboat ‘Marchioness’ last August 20, when Paul was among the many who so sadly lost their lives: this year on that date, Graham is holding a memorial show at London’s Hippodrome, all money raised going to the Childline charity, and needs offers of PAs and auction items on 081-669 4633 . . . Digital Underground being currently big in the US, ‘Doowutchyalike’ has been newly remixed by DJ Mark The 45 King — he rather revealingly calls his effort the Just Throw A Breakbeat Up Under There Mix! — although the initially promoed BCM Records white label of this remix is mistakenly credited to Clark Kent, while a CJ Mackintosh remix of ‘Packet Man’ will follow . . . Pianonegro ‘Pianonegro’ has been rushed out here on Epic (656081 6), only the original import being promoed . . . Richard Rogers’ Can’t Stop Loving You’ is being remixed by Frankie Knuckles & David Morales, apparently the first time that Knuckles has been let loose on a Marshall Jefferson production . . . Patti Day’s upcoming ‘No-one‘ has been remixed for US Starway Records Inc by Alan Coulthard, working out of his home studio in Barry, South Glamorgan (0446 736600), where he needs South Wales based talent — singers, rappers, DJs, instrumentalists — for some productions designed to put South Wales on the dance music map now that there is so much regional activity elsewhere (he’s also after local mixing gigs to keep his DJing hand in) . . . Rome’s Max & Frank Minoia and Corrado Rizza — responsible already for producing such as Jam Machine ‘Everyday’, Strings Of Love ‘Nothing Has Been Proved’, Paradise Orchestra ‘Satisfy Your Dream’, and currently the sizzling Coldjam featuring Grace ‘Last Night A DJ Saved My Life’ — now call themselves Livexpress Productions and are branching out internationally . . . Pete Haigh hosts Bassix! Tuesdays at Blackpool’s Just Ji’s by the bus depot (sounds romantic!), with half price drinks and upfront noises . . . ‘Snap’ The Event next Monday (June 25) at Poole’s Tower Park features DJs Chad Jackson, Paul Anderson, Jon Jules, Carl Cox, Paul Gotel, Steve Aspey, DJ Warren plus PAs by Massivo featuring Tracy, Olimax & DJ Shapps, TDP, Boneshakers (ticket details on 0860 386473).

TIMMY THOMAS ‘Why Can’t We Live Together’ (Remix)
DEPTH CHARGE ‘Goal
SUGAR BULLET ‘World Peace

G.T.O. ‘Pure’ (125¼bpm) (Dutch Go Bang! Records BANG 004)
From the label that gave us D-Shake, an actually more Bizz Nizz like bounding simple instrumental galloper with whistle blasts and other enthusiastic weekender-type crowd noises in its Pure Energy main treatment, causing instant excitement, or a gentler Arabic flavoured Journey Mix and shorter slow ambient Beautiful Mix (47/94bpm).

DANNY MADDEN ‘Facts Of Life’ (98¼bpm) (Eternal YZ473T)
Initially promoed only as a seven inch white label but spun regardless by all jocks lucky enough to have a copy, this Dancin’ Danny D produced tenderly anguished soulful jogging roller was in gentle drum and bass jiggled A-side (98¼bpm) or bassier and smoother mellow B-side (98½bpm) mixes, although now it has been 12-inched too (still on promo at this stage) elaborating on just the A-side in Dancin’ Danny D’s Mix With Acappella and confusingly differentiated but actually much longer Dancin’ Danny D’s Mix, plus Instrumental and Acappella versions, 12 inch variations on the seven inch B-side presumably being yet to come.

LFO ‘LFO’ (124½bpm) (W.A.R.P. Records WAP 5)
With initials standing for Low Frequency Oscillation, the latest and possibly hottest act on the Sheffield electro label has exploded thanks to this simple fluttering and bleeping instrumental, something like Guru Josh without the spacey saxophone but interspersed instead by bass bin rattling bursts of very low frequency oscillation indeed, flipped by the unlabelled throbbing ‘Track 4‘ (123¾bpm) and washing machine-type ‘Probe‘ (124bpm), all great if bleeps is what you like!

DARRYL PANDY ‘I Love Music’ (Eternal YZ478T)
The larger than life singer of 1986’s very first house hit, Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk & Jessie Saunders’ Love Can’t Turn Around’, Darryl comes roaring back in typical style on a Dancin’ Danny D produced uncluttered simple choogling revival of the O’Jays’ 1975 soul anthem, with a marathon Slamming Large Mix (121¾-122bpm), fractionally fluctuating and pausing halfway, plus a shorter Jamming Mix (121¾bpm) pausing nearer the end and its pauseless Instrumental.

BONESHAKERS ‘Don’t Go Away’ (Reachin’ Records RERT 002, via Spartan/G+M)
Previously the warmest track on the Dave Pearce owned label’s ‘Reachin’ 1′ compilation LP, this Roger Johnson & Chris Forbes produced anxious girls’ title line repeating and ‘Magic’s Wand’-ish tone nagged jittery canterer is now streaking away on promo and due commercially next week in its percussively shuffling 119.4bpm B.I.D. Mix (119½bpm), cleanly striding 120.6bpm Dexmaniax Mix (120½bpm), beefily bounding 120.2bpm King And I Mix (120¼bpm), and sharply smacking 0-120.2bpm Original Dub Mix (120¼bpm).

COLDJAM featuring GRACE ‘Last Night A DJ Saved My Life’ (Italian Fun Records FUN 008)
Excellent, and instantly massive, loosely shuffling gentler new treatment by Rome’s Livexpress Productions of Indeep’s enduring 1982 classic, much the same speed but less rigidly structured in The Groove Mix (110½bpm) although its jazzy piano and Philly-type strings stab more sharply in the flip’s trotting House Mix (112bpm), while vamping piano and bass burble through The Groove Mix backing track based funky drummer jiggled ‘The Last Night‘ (112bpm). Olimax & DJ Shapps’ artier version, long awaited and with unfortunately bad timing out now too, is likely to be eclipsed.

GRANDMASTER MELLE MEL & THE FURIOUS FIVE ‘White Lines (Freestyle Remix)’ (115bpm) (SugarHill Records SHRMT001)
1983’s rumbling Liquid Liquid ‘Cavern’ bassed anti-drugs rap classic is being reissued now in a new rhythm enhanced though not radically different Ben Liebrand remix, mainly re-equalized to give it a fuller more modern sound, with its Remix Edit and Original Long Version (115½-115bpm).

CABARET VOLTAIRE ‘Groovy, Laidback And Nasty E.P.’ (Parlophone PCSX73382)
A fast follow-up to ‘Keep On’, this instrumental 33⅓rpm EP has met instant mailing list acceptance — although it may be significant that few jocks actually cite the tracks they’re playing — with the Marshall Jefferson produced (in Chicago) falsetto Paris Brightledge title line repeating Ten City-ish ‘Searchin” (124½bpm), Marshall also having a hand in the JB scratching jerkily percolating electro ‘Rescue Me (City Lights)‘ (118bpm) and twittery acidic ‘Magic‘ (126bpm), the group apparently alone creating the rattling percussion punctuated though otherwise gentle nagging synth chimed ‘Easy Life‘ (122bpm) and monotonously burbling ‘Runaway‘ (104½bpm).

LIAZ ‘Affection’ (100bpm) (Kool Kat/Big Life KOOL T 512)
Juliet Edwards led Loose Ends-ish Midlands trio sweetly crooning a pleasant cover version of the outstanding track from Lisa Stansfield’s album, actually featuring Lisa’s backup vocals as — here’s the twist — produced by her Blue Zone partners, responsible of course for the original too, but not for Liaz’s own B-side bumpily swaying sparse ‘This Time (Full Length Mix)‘ (98½bpm).

THE ADDIS POSSE ‘Let The Warriors Dance — All Wrapped Up Remix’ (Warriors Dance WAFT 14R, via Spartan)
Much altered from the original that was warm back in February, the Craig Smith remixed nervy jiggler is now in Luv One rapped angry fast word spitting hip house Lyrical Licking (123½bpm) and Drum & Space (123bpm) Mixes, instrumental funky drum looped basic Warrior Workout (123½bpm) and twittery Pirate Acid (123bpm) Mixes.

OLIMAX & D.J. SHAPPS ‘Last Night A D.J. Saved My Life’ (eastwest YZ484T)
After being white labelled on their own Big Shout Records since January, it is with immense bad luck and timing that this clever if rather artsy fartsy ‘progressive music’ remake of the Indeep classic now coincides with the much simpler dancefloor aimed Italian remake by Coldjam featuring Grace, although there’s much for pop fans especially to enjoy in Oliver and André’s visionary interpretation, with their angelic choir punctuated baroque strings and organ swirled rippling original White Label Mix (115½bpm) and a longer orchestra tuning introed then sparser more episodic and mournfully sung Mr Monday Mix (110bpm).

PARADISE 10 featuring Less Stress ‘2 Much (RemiXes)’ (116bpm) (W.A.U! Mr. Modo Recordings MWS 019R, via G&M)
The previously Italo influenced raver, warm around March, now totally revamped and reissued in Phuture World Productions inc.’s throbbingly chugging instrumental Phuture World Mix, flipped by Youth’s gentler wriggling West Coast Mix and — so ambient it’s practically stationary! — Dr. Alex Paterson’s Start & Depart 2 Paradise .Mix.

LITTLE CAESAR ‘The Whole Of The Moon’ (103bpm) (A.1. Records 12 EAU 1, via Total/BMG)
The Waterboys’ original recording apparently having been big at certain raves, this cover version is a bumpily jogging white boys chanted atmospheric pop swayer with brassy accents and some yowling guitar towards the end, in Apollo 11 Stage One and sparser Apollo 11 Stage Two versions, flipped by the percussion jiggled oddly grooving, oddly attractive (and, for sure, oddly titled!) ‘EEE-ZZZ-BOO-GIE-RED-EEE-MIX’ and ‘EEE-ZZZ-BOO-GIE-TED-EEE-MIX’ (115½bpm).

VANDAL ‘The Laws Of Chants EP’ (de/Construction Records PT 43788)
Constructed by ‘Vandal’ with live overdubs by Peter Daou, this basically instrumental EP (previously a five tracker on US Nugroove back in February) has the attractively keyboarded synth washed shuffling ‘Amazing Grace’ (122bpm), title intoning jazzily chugging ‘Go Back To The World‘ (120bpm), acidically swirling staccato ‘Walk Thru The Same Ol’ Door‘ (120bpm) and rhythm looping jittery ‘Industrial French‘ (123bpm), the latter title punning on ‘industrial strength’.

GLEN GOLDSMITH ‘On The One’ (100¾bpm) (RCA PT 43660)
Mike Stevens produced and Reid co-penned funky drummer shuffled tapping wriggly jogger with isolated bursts of anxious vocal in the Club Mix, or an Instrumental Club Mix, plus a more fully vocal pent up jolting tighter 7″ treatment, certainly of and for the moment but not otherwise terribly distinctive.

KASH DA MASTA featurin’ D.J. Weet.A.Mix ‘Take A Fix Of Funk’ (117bpm) (1st Bass RUFF 7, via Rough Trade/The Cartel)
Boxing Lloyd Honeyghan’s rapping cousin Kevin angrily spitting a Whodini ‘Magic’s Wand’ nagged bumpily jolting and scratching lurcher in No Dope Mix, Dub Instrumental and Fix.A.Pella versions, his amusingly named dextrous D.J. being replaced by Cut Master M.C. for the flip’s “who’s afraid of the big bad wolf’ punctuated more fiercely jittering self assertive ‘I Blowz Up!‘ (124bpm), interestingly worded in The Ebony Mix, with remorselessly foul mouthed alternative ‘X’-Attitude and instrumental ‘X’-Plosive Music Mixes.

MANY FAZES ‘I’m Hip (The Hip Hoppers)’ (93¼bpm) (ffrr/Big Beat FX 136)
Backroom Music Productions created mellow rolling though raucously shouted and huskily rapped pleasant jogger, in The Hip Mix 1 and longer initially instrumental Boomin Beats For Freaks versions, flipped by the obviously William DeVaughn ‘Be Thankful For What You’ve Got’ inspired nervier fast talking jittery ‘The Gangsta’ Lean‘ (97¼bpm), in Lean & Mean, initially dubwise Ride With A Boom Box, and repetitive Gangsta’ Beats versions.

BOOM CLUB ‘Free Expression’ (116¼bpm) (Black Market/Big Life BCK 2T)
A Sarf London foursome fronted by the Wildski like rapping 19 years old Marcus, whipping up bumpily jiggling excitement from many instantly familiar noises, not least a repeated ‘Funkin’ For Jamaica’ trumpet tone and bits of ‘I Believe In Miracles’ beat, in Club, Radio and Dub Mixes.

49ERS ‘Girl To Girl (Extended Mix)’ (121bpm) (4th + B’way 12BRW 174)
Pop-aimed routine though brightly scampering Italo house, flipped by its Instrumental plus the ‘Don’t You Love Me/How Longer/Touch Me’ medleying ‘49ers Megamix (Extended Version)‘ (124½-125bpm), one of several current “dance” hits apparently with more pop than actual club appeal.

E.B.T.G. ‘Take Me (Clifton Mix)’ (99¾bpm) (blanco y negro SAM 673)
Everything But The Girl’s as yet unscheduled next single, a “baby baby baby” repeating languid girl crooned pleasant mellow swayer, has been aimed at clubs on advance promo in this very gently jiggling Bristol Baseline Productions remix and their Clifton Instrumental (as in the Clifton Suspension Bridge, just down river from Bristol).

DIANA BROWN & BARRIE K. SHARPE ‘The Masterplan (Remixes)’ (ffrr FXR 133)
Taking a while for the rhythm to get going, the remixed Club Chart topper taps and bumps along a perhaps over sparsely weaving course in David Morales’ American 12″ Mix (102¾-103bpm) and Accadub Version (102¾bpm), flipped by the also stripped down but better syncopated Barrie K. Sharpe’s Ground Beat Mix (103bpm).

MIND OF KANE ‘The Mind EP (A four track dance adventure)’ (Deja Vu Recordings DJV 002, via Jet Star)
So completely white labelled that there is no indication anywhere of its four tracks’ official titles, here concocted myself from their most easily identifiable elements and listed in A/B side order, this Crawley duo created synthesizer EP has the burblingly chugging ‘Love Machine‘ (118¼bpm), ponderously juddering ‘Move On’ (105½bpm), birds chirruped then tuneful twittery cantering ‘Sueno State‘ (120¼bpm), and nervily leaping spacey acidic ‘Non-Stop Technocon‘ (124¼bpm), all but the totally instrumental track three (perhaps the set’s best?) having some repeated chants or intonations.

THE CHARLATANS ‘Only One I Know’ (113½-113¼bpm) (Situation Two SIT 70T)
If Manchester is Madchester, then these presumably Madcunians borrow the organ sound from the Spencer Davis Group’s ‘Gimme Some Loving’ for a similarly jiggling and surging late Sixties-styled pastiche.

England NEW ORDER ‘World In Motion… (Subbuteo Mixes)’ (Factory/MCA WFAC 293)
Graeme Park & Mike Pickering’s separately promoed alternative much more authentically house styled Vocal Version (125¼bpm) and instrumental Dub Mix (125¼-125½bpm) appear to be preferred by most club jocks, joining the other previously promoed two Farley & Weatherall dance mixes in fade shortened form on the commercial 12-inch EP.
