December 17, 1977: Canvey Gold Mine Revival #2, War, Trammps, Bob Marley, Mike Theodore Orchestra

New Spins

WAR: ‘Galaxy’ (MCA 339) (BNDA debut 1/14/78)
Spacey slow start to what becomes their best chunky beater since the similar ‘Me And Baby Brother’ – a monster!

TRAMMPS: ‘Love Per Hour’ (from LP ‘III’, Atlantic K 50425)
Probably the hottest of side one’s three typical tracks, while side two has slowies too.

BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS: ‘Jamming’ (Island IPR 2005)
Wow – a longer, totally different dub version on limited 12in!

MIKE THEODORE ORCHESTRA: ‘The Bull’ (Atlantic K 11035) (BNDA debut 9/3/77)
And this Spanish-flavoured rhythm rattler’s been 12-inched as well.

VARIOUS: ‘Dance Paarrrty’ LP (Atlantic/Contempo CLP 605)
Eight full-length tracks on a sampler, basically for Contempo product but sweetened by Mass Production, Slave and CJ & Co oldies which make it good value.

RAUL DE SOUZA: ‘Sweet Lucy’ (Capitol CL 15955) (BNDA debut 7/30/77)
Unusual fast jazzy piano and synthesizer instrumental by George Duke, with a Stevie Wonder feel and girlie chorus.

TOMMI: ‘Disco Satisfaction’ (Private Stock PVT 129)
Oh gawd, here’s a ‘Discorollingstonesmania’ now, though somehow the female Euro treatment can’t match Jagger’s original raunch!

BLACK SABBATH: ‘Paranoid’ / ‘Sabbath Bloody Sabbath’ (NEM NES 112)
Heavy oldies back-to-back.

RORY BLOCK: ‘Help Me Baby’ (Chrysalis CHS 2176/12)
The gal’s gentle Thelma-type builder’s been 12-inched.

GLADIATORS: ‘Pocket Money’ / ‘Evil Doers’ (Virgin VS 19312)
Heavily ethnic punky reggae four-track 12in, with good disco dub versions.

MICHAEL HENDERSON: ‘Goin’ Places’ LP (Buddah BDLH 5018)
Couple of Isley-style funkers and some lovely slowies on a really classy, if specialist, album.

GLORIA JONES: ‘Bring On The Love’ (EMI 2720)
Bland little steady rhythm ticker, 12-inched promotionally (in a luminous sleeve!) to stir some action.

STANLEY TURRENTINE: ‘Don’t Give Up On Us’ (from LP ‘Nightwings’, Fantasy FT 535)
Slushy sax reading of David Soul’s smoocher by a predictable session line-up which lacks only Tom Scott from the usual hacks.
