CHANGE: ‘Searching’ (WEA K 79156T)
Luther Vandross-sung smash soaring synthesizer burbled rattling and tapping 129bpm 12in bounder you’ve been waiting for (mixers note there’s a ½bpm drag at times), the tightly snapping spiky 126bpm ‘Angel In My Pocket‘ being chix-sung flip.

ASHFORD & SIMPSON. ‘Love Don’t Make It Right’ (Warner Bros K 17679T)
Bottled up bubbly 111-110-111 bpm 12in thudder lull of jittery excitement like a zappier Flack & Hathaway / Gladys Knight (it mixes well with ’em of course), the flip being 1977’s ‘Bourgie Bourgie‘ which I’ll BPM later as initial promo pressings are evidently faulty.

SHALAMAR: ‘I Owe You One’ (Solar SO12-11)
Although brighter in sound this jittery jaunty little smacker should synch in sensationally halfway through ‘Back Together Again’ except, unless it’s voltage fluctuation time again, the UK 12in pressing seems now slightly faster at 112bpm. No matter, it’s still bang in the currently trendy tempo bag! 

RHYZE: ‘Do Your Dance’ (LP ‘Just How Sweet !s Your Love’ Epic EPC 88457)
Dead slow bluesy brass intro suddenly becomes a creamily clopping 119-120-123-125 bpm restrained chanter with braying brass, due to be their next single, others all with a distinctive glibly soulful sound being the Commodores-ish smoochy 29bpm ‘Home’, tunefully galloping happy lightweight 128-127-128 bpm ‘Free‘, romping attack and rhythm switching falsetto / bass 126 (intro)-127-126 (break)-127 bpm ‘Singing And Dancing‘, the smoothly cantering 127 bpm ‘I Found Love In You‘ of course being flip to the also creamily clopping 118-119 bpm title track hit.

LOCKSMITH: ‘TMI’ (LP ‘Unlock The Funk’ Arista SPART 1143)
As well as the three 12in titles, this menacing bumpy 118bpm instrumental jazz throbber with tinkling chiming tones is getting some action, along with the jiggly 57/114bpm ‘Cinnamon‘ piano jogger, place-naming simple funky 115-117-116-115 bpm ‘Groove Town‘ burbler and jaunty sparse 123-124-123-124 bpm ‘Don’t Hurt Yourself‘ tapper with catchy synth tones.

MASS PRODUCTION: ‘Cosmic Lust’ (Atlantic K 11601T)
The stars of Knebworth – sorry, Skegness – couple on 12in their classic jazzily racing 126-128-125-126-124 bpm synth, brass and keyboards instrumental oldie and the loosely-knit strange sparse new 129-130 bpm ‘Gonna Make You Love Me‘ knocker with wailing chick and harmony chanting chaps.

INVISIBLE MAN’S BAND: ‘Love Can’t Come / Love Has Come’ (Island 12WIP 6642)
Soft conversationally starting and then ever changing constantly accelerating 117 to 126 bpm 12in jazzy disco canterer with great subtle ingredients and inventive vocal work by the old Five Stairsteps that were, the attractively invigorating result being a bit specialist.

FLAKES: ‘Sugar Frosted Lover’ (Calibre CABL 506)
Unnecessary awful empty dead 120-121-120-121 bpm remix ludicrously leaves out the syndrums, but at least the 3-track 12ín flip features the syndrum-spiked 118-119-120 bpm original of this effetely walled purposeful sugar smacker, plus a guitar-led but again syndrum-lacking 120-121-122-121 bpm instrumental version.

ZEN featuring JIMMY THOMAS: ‘Just A Matter OI Time’ (Laser LAS 34T)
Hot Chocolate-flavoured vocals somewhat spoil a rolling 116bpm 12in chugger with interesting long jazzy piano breaks, the well made smacking pure “disco” 127bpm ‘Music Is Life’ flip being good for Scotland.

SUGARHILL GANG: ‘Hot Hot Summer Day’ (Sugarhill SHL 104)
More mellow flowing 114bpm 12in bumper but it’s still a rapper, the “instrumental” flip actually bringing the pleasant background singing to the fore.

CHIC: ‘Real People’ LP (Atlantic K 50711)
Their textures are denser than before but it’s still basically the same old judder and jolt, the 98-97bpm title-track logger following on from the strange strings-played 105bpm ‘Open Up‘, and ‘26‘ being 84bpm.

BACCHUS: ‘Ya Gotta Get Up To Get Down’ (Great North Western GNW 001)
Locally popular repetitive rolling Hot Chocolate-type 111bpm 7in lurcher by the resident band at Newcastle-under-Lyme Tiffanys (details Dave Christie 061-236 5552)

PAUL SIMON: ‘Late In The Evening’ (Warner Bros K 17666)
Latin-tinged rhythmically skittering 120bpm conga kicker with a great storyline, evidently on limited 12in.

MINNIE RIPERTON: ‘Love Lives Forever’ LP (US Capitol SOO-12097)
I’m not often suckered by the superstar session scam, but this time it’s different. Minnie died of cancer a year ago, and her unissued Epic-recorded 1978 vocal tracks heard here have within the last few months had completely new instrumental backings and vocal support added by a galaxy of stars. Most notably her lovely slinky 0-44/89bpm ‘Here We Go’ has Roberta Flack, Peabo Bryson & Tom Scott, similarly jogging 39/79bpm ‘You Take My Breath Away’ has George Benson and 41/82-83bpm ‘The Song Of Life (La-La-La) ‘ has Patrice Rushen, gorgeous slowies being the 0-32bpm ‘Give Me Time’ with Stevie Wonder’s harmonica and 34bpm ‘I’m In Love Again’ with Michael Jackson & Hubert Laws, the only semi-fast ones being the long steady sinister thumping 100-101bpm ‘Strange Affair’ and languidly swinging 0-115bpm ‘Island in The Sun’. Basically down-tempo, the set may not become a vital disco smash but you’ll never regret getting it.

GERALDINE HUNT: ‘Can’t Fake The Feeling’ (US Prism PDS-405)
Somewhat glossed over when reviewed in haste last week, this heavily smacking 115-116-114-115-116-114bpm 12in driving funk thudder with soulful rhythm-riding vocal is an absolute killer and looks like being huge! (The instrumental break is the central 114-115bpm of this revised rating.)

WINDY CITY: ‘I Still Love You’ (US Kelli-Arts KA-4501)
Carl Davis/Otis Leavill-produced, Reggie Butler-penned, superb pent-up 25/50bpm 7in deep soul smoocher lull of aching hurt, soaring Marvin Gaye-like wailing and searing sax, all kinda reminiscent of the originals ‘Baby I’m For Real’ (it’s that powerful!) and currently causing a sensation at Gullivers since Tom Holland turned us on to it.

TRIPLE “S” CONNECTION: ‘Got To Get Your Number’ (US 20th Century-Fox TCD-111)
Great bassily whomping powerful but otherwise sparse 119bpm 12in strutter with a lot of space between bursts of Temptations-ish vocal, the attacking drive (though not the sound) being strangely reminiscent of Johnnie Taylor’s old ‘Who’s Making Love’.

BRASS CONSTRUCTION: ‘We Are Brass’ (US UA UA-X1371-Y)
Blood Sweat & Tears-flavoured skippable slow intro to a subduedly chanted 119-120bpm 7in churner with ‘We are Brass, so move your . . . body’ lyric, surprisingly not credited to Randy Muller and indeed a slight style change, from their imminent new ‘VI’ album.

NEIL LARSEN/BUZZ FEITEN: ‘Further Notice’ (LP ‘Larson-Feiten Band’ US Warner Bros BSK 3468)
Rock orientated white group with a jaunty 126-128-129 (guitar)-128-127bpm organ instrumental in Neil’s more usual jazz style, also on 7in (WBS49282).

TIM WEISBERG. ‘What’s Going On’ (LP ‘Party Of One’ US MCA MCA-5125)
Marvin’s oldie in a nice gently jogging 98/49bpm jazz flute treatment, others being the blandly tootling lightly Latin 107bpm ‘Magic Lady’ jiggler, slightly grittier 106bpm ‘Page One’ jogger, swaying 44/88-43bpm ‘Katie’ with yowling voicebox guitar joining in, and staccato vocal 130bpm ‘Don’t Keep Me Waiting Girl’ snapper.

CHUCK BROWN / THE SOUL SEARCHERS: ‘Time Has No Ending’ (LP ‘Funk Express’ US Source SOR-3234)
Lovely 28bpm smoocher with scatting and producer Wayne Henderson’s trombone, ‘Sticks And Stones’ being a lazily heavy 93-94bpm funk swayer, ‘In The Pocket‘ a rapper-rhythm 110-111bpm heavy funk bumper, ‘Come On And Boogie‘ a two-part angry dated 126-129bpm soul-funk charger with buzzing bass, and ‘Keep That Same Old Feeling‘ a disastrously speeded-up 127bpm treatment of the classic that destroys all its subtlety.

LTD: ‘Where Did We Go Wrong’ (US A&M 2250-S)
Sam Dees-penned tortuous aching 33bpm 7in smoocher, the ponderous 94bpm ‘Stand Up LTD‘ heavy funk B-side being due here also as flip of our forthcoming ‘Shine On‘ 12in.

MAIN INGREDIENT: ‘Think Positive’ (US RCA PD-12061)
Cuba Gooding-sung slow-starting then Latin-tinged lush 120bpm 12in jitterer with freakily zapping attacks from strings ‘n’ things.

Slinky slow 99-100-99bpm 12in chugging duet with background sax and subdued variation of the KC sound.

Bernard Lyons from Dublin was a constant visitor to Mayfair Gullivers last week on holiday in London. Part of the Taskforce Roadshow (Dublin 744056), who also operate two of Dublin’s best roller discos, resident weekly on Tuesdays at Sloopys and Saturdays at Hoops, and with a disco show on the pirate Big D radio (one of several tolerated stations it seems), Bernard says that Roy Taylor, Karen Black & The Nevada’s version of ‘Walk In The Park’ (Spider WEB 028) is top of the pops there but not of his disco chart!
