ODDS ‘N’ BODS
DUE TO threatened industrial action by members of the NGA, this issue of RECORD MIRROR has gone to press early and we are unable to bring you James Hamilton’s normal column.
Next week’s paper will now carry all the latest gossip and reviews.
HOT VINYL
LUTHER VANDROSS: ‘I’ll Let You Slide’ (Epic TA 3978)
A star in the descendant, Luther’s been sliding himself especially following his recent productions for various soul divas and is unlikely to be helped here by this US-tempoed empty fast 132bpm 12in canterer (inst flip). He should stick to just singing, his main talent.
KENNY LYNCH: ‘Shotgun’ (Satril 12SAT 511)
Easily rolling slick 112bpm 12in bumper with yowling guitar and sax but spoilt by overly frothy chix, who really ruin the instrumental 112bpm ‘Mafia-Funk Chin-Mental Mix‘ flipside version.
KABBALA: ‘Yen-Nbo-Ose’ (Red Flame RFB 3712, via Virgin)
Unfortunately over-frantic 139bpm 12in afro instrumental, the 120bpm ‘Yo Yo Dance‘ flip being more danceable if undistinguished.
THE TEMPTATIONS WITH FOUR TOPS: ‘Medley’ (Tamla Motown TMGT 1320)
Messily arranged over rushed 132-138-129-130-110-132-136-137-0bpm “live” medley of their respective old hits, from the ‘Motown 25’ TV show, flipped on 12in for the first time by the Temptations original full length extremely sparse 124/62-122(intro)-121-120bpm ‘Papa Was A Rolling Stone’, for historical reference rather than modern floors.
RONNIE DYSON: ‘I Just Need A Little More Lovin’ (US Cotillion 0-96977)
Subduedly jaunty 111½bpm 12in gospel-blues chugger, better than the official A-side synth burbled skittering 120bpm ‘You Better Be Fierce‘, which has nowhere near the impact of ‘All Over Your Face’.
MESSENGER SERVICE: ‘Get Streetwise’ (US Silver Screen Records SSR 114)
‘Thriller’-introed heavily thudding c.110bpm 12in rap chanter in four lengths/versions, long, short, inst, dub.
OUTPUT: ‘Move For Me’ (US Tuff City 4Z9 04230)
Bass rumbled monotonous juddering c.113bpm 12in jiggler (inst flip).
ROCK MASTER SCOTT & THE DYNAMIC 3: ‘It’s Life (You Gotta Think Twice)’ (US Profile PRO-7023)
Boring slow jittery c.105bpm 12in rap (inst/bonus version flip).
DEELE: ‘Body Talk’ (US Solar 0-66981)
Prince/Rick James-type hard c.125bpm 12in smacker (inst flip), not really for here but hitting Stateside.
KWICK: ‘Stuck Up’ (US Capitol 8573)
‘Shack Up’-cum Prince-ish dull c.111bpm 12in juddering vocal group jolter.
DANNY JAYMES: ‘Rockin’ Robin’ (Passion PASH 1213)
Dreadful UK-recorded messily frantic 123bpm 12in ‘Rockit’ rip off, not worth serious consideration by the real hip hop posse.
ANDRE CYMONE: ‘Make Me Wanna Dance’ (CBS TA 3818)
Vocodered and muttered 127½bpm 12in Prince copyist (OK, his chum too), a non-starter on import and proven waste of vinyl now it’s out here.
STANLEY CLARKE/GEORGE DUKE: ‘Heroes’ (Epic TA 3860)
Appalling frantic 166½bpm racer, on 3-track 12in with its instrumental (123bpm at 33 1/3!) and the pleasant enough instrumental 99-0bpm ‘Atlanta‘ — though few are likely to buy a 12in just for that.
ST. CLAIR PALMER: ‘Growing Up Too Young’ (Carrere CART 293)
Shameless slowed-down 122bpm 12in copy of ‘Master Blaster (Jammin’)’.
BARBARA YORK: ‘Close To You’ (Banana FRUIT 2T, via Pinnacle)
Naive 119bpm 12in rip off of ‘Murphy’s Law’.
LADY B: ‘Attractive Young Man Wanted’ (RCA RCAT 355)
The ‘To The Beat Y’All’-rapping programme director of Philadelphia’s WHAT urban radio, Wendy Clarke treats Rod Stewart’s song as an oddball ’60s throwback with humming 110bpm 12in gospel-soul backing, co-prod by Eivets Rednow fan Evets Renrut, hardly a disco dancer . . . though I bet RCA’s Paul Williams loves it!
JEFFREY OSBORNE: ‘Stay With Me Tonight’ (A&M AMX 157)
Remixed choppily jerking 120bpm strutter on 3-track 12in with the older bluesy 0-109bpm ‘Ready For Your Love‘ and lush slow 33½/67bpm ‘Baby’ — initial pressings muddled up the sides of the US versions, so our A-side was its (to my mind preferable) instrumental until the mistake was noticed, and these dub pressings have also been circulated with a little orange sticker marking the sleeve!
DeBARGE: ‘In A Special Way’ LP (US Gordy 6061GL)
Desperately unattractive and undistinctive four brothers/one sister family group with an undistinguished set unlikely to do anything here, despite being “new blood” for Motown in the States, most bearable being the 44/88bpm ‘Stay With Me’, while both ‘Be My Lady‘ and ‘Need Somebody‘ are 103bpm.
EARL YOUNG’S TRAMMPS: ‘What Happened To The Music’ (US Philly Sound Works PSW 778)
Vince Montana’s ‘Heavy Vibes’ or some similar c.119bpm 12in instrumental with added typical Trammps vocal, which is just getting hard when out of a strong short rap it suddenly goes all “cabaret” instead of piling on the pressure (dub/aca flip).
JIMMY ‘BO’ HORNE: ‘You’re So Good To Me’ (US Sunnyview SUN 409)
Rather raw simple emphatic c.114bpm 12in jolter in two vocal versions and an inst, best bit being a Billy Stewart impersonation halfway.
RHYTHM MAKERS LTD: ‘Party Rap’ (US Star Vision International SVI 1109)
MC poppin’ slow 101-102bpm 12in hip hop judderer (inst flip).
VICIOUS 4: ‘Getting To The Point’ (US Billy-D BD 0002)
Blunt edged rapping 104bpm 12in hip hop (inst flip).
ZEST: ‘Hot Tasty Love’ (US Jungle City JC 1001)
Busy 112bpm 12in hip hoppery gives way to fairly dull squawking chix over a less violent beat box rhythm (inst flip).
B.T. EXPRESS: ‘Hangin’ Out’ (US Earthtone ET-1201)
Disappointing routing gruff chap hollered c.131bpm 12in chunderer without much spark for dancers (inst/aca flip).
CAPTAIN JONES: ‘Space Dawg’ (US Beantown BM 09)
Muddily juddering c.108bpm 12in heavy P’funk grumbler obviously inspired by ‘Dog Talk’ (dub flip).
AFRIKA BAMBAATAA: ‘Death Mix’ (US Paul Winley Records 12×33-10)
Very murky “live” recorded undynamic c.99bpm 12in rap by un-named poppin’ MCs over Afrika’s cutting and mixing, sounding as if from a bootleg cassette — especially as his official newie is due now.
UP FRONT: ‘The Age Of Temptation’ (US UP UP-936)
Fast juddering 125bpm 12in electro lurcher, the instrumental flip getting more attention than the comes and goes chix sung A-side.
ELECTRIC POWER BAND: ‘Sugar Daddy’ (US Becket BKD 518)
Jaunty if blatant 0-107bpm 12in rip off of the New Edition/Jackson 5 (inst flip) — a pity, as the start promised better.
RED LIPSTIQUE: ‘Shame Shame Shame’ (Charly Disco International CYZ 109)
Forrest-inspired 12in remake of Shirley & Co’s 1975 hit, the more fully fleshed 115-116bpm Euromix being far more infectious than the extremely stark and initially unrecognisable 113bpm US Mix.
