SOUTH-WEST LONDON’s long established community-serving Radio Jackie 1332kHz/227m MW last Friday were served with a writ by Radio Mercury and the Attorney General claiming loss of advertising revenue and the stealing of Mercury’s audience, amongst other complaints (this despite sympathetic support from their local MP) — however the writ is being contested by Jackie, who are taking their case to the European Court Of Human Rights … Jon Guy reports from Manchester that the busted KFM were planning by now to be back on air, but on Medium Wave using a low power transmitter, while the unconnected rival Carousel Radio have been testing on the thus vacated 94.3FM with an aim to run around the clock … LWR seem firmly back on 92.05FM, and although not one of London’s soul stations there are various hip hop shows … Brian Hurst now counts down the Billboard top 100 US Hot Black singles on Solar 102.45FM Fridays 9.11 pm … Ashford & Simpson topped US Hot Black, Alphaville ‘Big In Japan’ Hot Dance/Disco with Paul Hardcastle ‘Rain Forest’ streaking up fast behind!! MAJOR HARRIS: ‘I Believe In Love’ LP (Streetwave MKL 3)
Produced by Butch and backed by the whole family Ingram (who typically go more for soul content than strict tempo), the traditional throaty soulster’s excellent classy set’s most haunting standout is the gently weaving 104⅓-105⅔-108½- 0-108bpm title track swayer, beefier being the 110-111-112bpm ‘What Ever Happened‘ and 110½-111-112½bpm ‘Let Me Give You Love‘ while in this company his recent wriggling 113⅓- 113¾bpm ‘Gotta Make Up Your Mind‘ sounds stronger (a better mix?), many mellow slowies including the 82¼/41bpm ‘Through It All (The Game)’, 68½bpm ‘After All’, 74bpm ‘I Love You’, 69-0bpm ‘Rediscover’, 62bpm ‘Spend Some Time’.

MASCARA: ‘Baja’ (Personal 12PER 110)
‘Jingo’-ish jaunty rattling 122¾bpm bounder with Spanish chattering chix and Kid Creole-ish rapping chap going into a vibes-based conversational break (useful Instrumental Dub and echoey Ruff Mix flip), mixed by Jellybean and huge in US clubs as is anything he touches. A stiff on import, but then even ‘Jingo’ took time to explode.

SHEENA EASTON: ‘Strut (Dance Mix)’ (EMI 12EMI 5510)
Starkly percussive powerful 114⅓bpm jagged jerker building intensity as it motorvates along behind chanting shrill Sheena, monstrous in the States since the summer and given the chance likely to do a Madonna here. I think it’s terrific!

GRANDMASTER MELLE MEL & THE FURIOUS FIVE: ‘Step Off’ (Sugarhill SHL 139)
Although the slower US original is credited to The Furious Five featuring Cowboy, Melle Mel & Scorpio, our much more useful remix capitalizes on Melle Mel’s current fame with a repeat of his ‘Chaka Khan’ intro and rap from ‘I Feel For You’ laid over the start of this strongly tugging 101⅔-102bpm rap set to the O’Jays’ old ‘For The Love Of Money’ bass line, likely to be big (and for third generation b boys the flip reprises their classic 100bpm The Message’).

DREAMBOY: In The Nite’ (LP ‘Contact’ US Qwest 1-25163)
Rhythmically similar to Jermaine Jackson’s ‘Come To Me’, this anxiously sung lead-swapping pent-up mellow 111bpm jitterer has been simmering in certain black clubs for some time and smells suspiciously like another Fatback ‘I Found Lovin’’ in the making — otherwise the five squeaky young guys’ set is heavily influenced by pre-‘Purple Rain’ Prince on the 117½bpm title track, 122bpm ‘Make It Work‘, 128bpm ‘Luv Games‘, 0-122bpm ‘Hold On Tight‘, while their dead slow US Black hit ‘I Promise (I Do Love You)’ is one of four reasonable smoochers.

TWILIGHT 22: ‘Mysterious (Remix)’ (US Vanguard SPV 80)
Gordon Bahary has now treated his naggingly tugging 102bpm today’s groove jogger as if it had had a typical Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis remix (dub flip), making it great to mix with those guys’ own current SOS Band/Cherrelle stuff, and hotter than ever it was on LP. Crafty!

FATBACK: ‘Spread Love’ (US Spring SPR-12-414)
From the old ‘Is This The Future?’ set on which she sang, Evelyn Thomas indeed co-penned and is actually the only lead vocalist on this beefily grinding 109⅓bpm pent-up slow chugger with a sassy rap halfway (Inst flip), remixed by M&M since ‘Heartless’ (with which it mixes!) and quite a rival to it — in fact although she’s oddly uncredited it’s virtually a solo single as if to cash in on her ‘High Energy’ US success, and considering the similarity of ‘Heartless’ to ‘Somebody Else’s Guy’ it’s all ironically like Jocelyn Brown’s recent situation.

BOGAZ: ‘I’ve Got Love’ (AGR 12AGR 2, via PRT)
Very neat tightly striding 116½-117½bpm modem soul from East London, originally out last year, with harmony reinforced lead chap and wailing sax break over the Kashif-ish beat (inst flip), well worth checking anew and just the thing to freshen up Solar’s airwaves.

PATRICK BROWN: ‘Fantasy’ (Kufe EB003, via 01-500 1845 or Pinnacle)
Sparsely tripping attractive 121 bpm light soul canterer, almost in stripped-down Philly style and worth hearing if that’s your fancy, flipped by the tender tortuous slow wailing ‘On The Right Track’ for added soul appeal, impressively un-English.

CHRISTINE LEWIN: ‘It’s A Secret’ (Kufe EB004, as above)
‘Juicy Fruit’s reggaefier returns with a pleasant lightly swaying straight 109⅓-111bpm soul roller on which her winsome little voice may lack range but is somewhat reminiscent of Barbara ‘Hello Stranger’ Lewis (inst flip).

JAYE WILLIAMS: ‘Let Me Be The One’ (Local Records LR 9, via 01-808 5180 or Jet Star)
The ex-Style Council girl singer’s John Collins-created rather drily electronic purposeful 97⅔bpm slow tugger could do with some more mellow “sweetening” to realize Its full promise — and indeed the better flipside instrumental (credited to SEMI-AUTOMATIC) gets just that courtesy of some classy sax. Now if they could only marry the two!

ATMOSFEAR: ‘Telepathy’ (Elite DAZZ-35)
Electronically burbled sparsely striding 119bpm wriggler with nice jazzy brass and vibes behind some female vocal, possibly better in the instrumental flip’s Electrojazzmix and Metalepathymix.

PAMELA JOY: ‘Think Fast’ (US Pizazz PZ-119)
Sparsely tapping and wriggling deceptively fast 122bpm smoothly souled jittery swayer (inst flip), quite interesting and getting a mild buzz.

ART OF NOISE: ‘Close-Up’ (ZTT 12ZTPSO1)
Their LP-promoting 7in hit is merely the old ‘Beat Box (Diversion Two!’ and now on 12in here’s yet another variation of the powerfully juddering hip hop instrumental, this time 106½-107bpm with would you believe yet another freakily finishing 0-110bpm ‘Close-Up (Hop)‘ version as flip. If only Trevor Horn could get all five 12in mixes the exact same speed, someone with five decks could build up a real wall of sound.

THE YOUNGER GENERATION: ‘Breakloose (Breakdancin’)’ (Master Mix 12CHE 8411)
Produced by Terry Lewis alone (he’s rumoured to have split from Jimmy Jam Harris — is this confirmation?), a Patrick Adams-mixed heavily juddering 109bpm hip hop rap of no great freshness aimed more at Break Machine’s market (dub flip with stun gun zaps). The title is revealingly opportunist.

CAROL JIANI: ‘Dancing In The Rain’ (Streetwave XKHAN 505)
A whole 7-track LP packaged budget-style as a sleeveless 12in, happening first in Hi-NRG clubs are this thunder-introed 136⅓bpm galloper and a subdued 0- 121-122¾bpm revival of ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’, although much played on soul radio is the huskily rapped mildly chugging 104bpm ‘Bum Rap’ story-song, others being the 2-Tone-ish 119½bpm ‘Dear John’, brassily cantering 129bpm ‘I Can’t Stop‘, old Hi-NRG 129bpm ‘Love Now Play Later‘ and 145½bpm ‘Touch And Go Lover‘.

MADONNA: ‘Stay’ (LP ‘Like A Virgin’ Sire 925 157-1)
Produced with cold efficiency by Nile Rodgers, the icily erotic looking lady’s second set is much more pop orientated than before and strongly reminiscent of Cyndi Lauper, next best after her sharply chugging 119-120-119-120bpm title track hit being this grow-on-you ‘Searching’-ish 118bpm infectiously building singalong roller while rock-disco are the 136bpm ‘Dress You Up‘, 136¾bpm ‘Material Girl‘, 0-133bpm ‘Angel‘, 111bpm ‘Pretender‘, 150bpm ‘Over And Over‘, 0-94bpm ‘Shoo-Be-Doo‘ — Rose Royce’s classic slow 0-35/70-0bpm ‘Love Don’t Live Here Anymore‘ showing she’s no soul singer.

WHAM!: ‘Last Christmas’ (Epic GA4949)
Lovely gently chugging 106½bpm ethereal breathy floater with some seasonal sleighbells and strong short-term MoR appeal.

LUTHER: ‘At Christmas Time’ (US Atlantic 7-89593)
Dreamy slow tender 63bpm seasonal smoother from Luther Vandross’ 1976 incarnation, also on a ‘Funky Christmas’ LP but 7in flip to The Treacherous Three ‘Santa’s Rap‘.

BAND AID: ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ (Mercury FEED 1)
The other side of the seasonal coin, a remarkably selfless 57½-115bpm all-star shuffler about which you must surely know the details.

AFRICAN CONNEXION: ‘Dancing On The Sidewalk’ (Oval OVAL 32/12, via 01-622 0111)
Sierra Leone originated foursome augmented by others in London with a simple jolly easily danceable almost soca-style 122⅓bpm Afro jiggler, fusing elements from Zaire, Ghana and Nigeria without either getting too ethnic or losing their integrity, while the flip’s similar 0-129-131bpm ‘E Sidom Panam‘ compromises even less.

WINSTON REEDY: ‘Baby Love’ (DEP International DEP 13-12)
Jackie Mittoo-produced extremely catchy chunkily chugging 73bpm slow reggae swayer, ending in a much harder dub, powerful stuff (freaky dubwise 79bpm ‘Instant Buzz’ flip).

CARROLL THOMPSON featuring Total Contrast: ‘The Apple Of My Eye’ (Virgin VS698-12)
Forsaking Floy Joy, she’s joined in close vocal counterpoint by the guys from Total Contrast for an electronically jittered 95½bpm reggae-soul swayer which would be even more attractive were the beat slightly less mechanical (inst dub flip).

RUDY GRANT: ‘Get Ready, Get Right’ (RAK 12RAK 380)
Eddy’s brother The Mexicano fits a familiar infectious Grant-style repetitive vocal groove to a bass synth’ wheezled and burped 107⅓bpm jiggly rhythm that’s naggingly effective in an ultimately lightweight way (semi-inst flip).

MIKEY DREAD: ‘Reggae Hit-Shot’ (DEP International DEP 12-12)
Nasally sung “self-penned” 0-111-112-113-114 113⅔bpm ripoff of Marcia Griffiths’ ‘Electric Boogie’, good enough fun if you aren’t familiar with that moronically catchy underground smash.

TREVOR WALTERS: ‘Never Let Her Slip Away’ (Polydor POSPX 716)
Andrew Gold’s oldie adapted unconvincingly and coldly into electronically driven tricky stop-go 0-102⅓bpm pop-reggae (self-penned older more rootsy 81bpm ‘You Make Me Feel‘ flip).

MEZZOFORTE: ‘Take Off’ (Steinar ST 1250)
Melodically infectious busily lurching beefy fast chugging 120bpm jazz-funk instrumental with Level 42-style bass and buzzing brassy synthetics, doing best so far in pop venues.
