December 27, 1986: The Hammy Awards 1986

This week’s edition of Record Mirror was a special two-week issue, so the next edition was dated 10th January 1987. There were no reviews or weekly charts this week.

THE HAMMY AWARDS

YO, HOMEBOY! It’s that double def fresh time of the year, when once again we open the golden envelope and see who was really hot to trot in 1986. All statistics are derived from the year-end disco charts, so you can’t argue! Record company executives can start quaking now, as I think some heads will roll…

IMPORT OF THE YEAR: Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley ‘Jack Your Body’ (US Underground) — however, ***STOP PRESS!!!*** it’s due here at last for December 29 rush release on London (LONX 117), legal difficulties having finally been resolved.

SOUND OF THE YEAR: House, obviously, but the new wave fusion of hip hop with go go beats actually made rap a much more significant chart force, and helped reawaken interest in go go itself, while attempts to cross samba over from the jazz clubs have yet to bear fruit.

“OFF-STREET PARKING” UNDERGROUND HIT OF THE YEAR: Russ Brown ‘Gotta Find A Way’ (10 Records)

WAS I RIGHT OR WAS I EVER RIGHT?: Oran ‘Juice’ Jones ‘The Rain (Remix)’ (Def Jam)

THEY OUGHT TO BE SELLING TOOTHPASTE: CBS/Epic for their insensitive handling of Alexander O’Neal ‘What’s Missing’, and Virgin for their ludicrously convoluted marketing of Loose Ends.

CAMERA OF THE YEAR: Canon T90.

IF YOU CAN’T FIGHT ‘EM, JOIN ‘EM: Run-DMC enlisting Aerosmith’s help to cross over.

GET STUPID FRESH: Beastie Boys (white men can sing the blues!).

PIRACY IS THEFT: Bootlegs (why not buy something new from 1986 instead of, sheep-like, lapping up anything that someone wants to con you into thinking is an essential oldie?).

BUCCANEERING CAN PAY BUT IS AN EXPENSIVE BUSINESS: Department of Trade & Industry “pirate busters” confiscated equipment at 218 raids (and counting) on 84 unlicensed radio stations during 1986.

BROADCASTER OF THE YEAR: John Sachs, whose weekday afternoon Capital Radio show is in touch with young multi-racial London’s tastes and makes the hits (other broadcasters I switch on to hear include Robbie Vincent, for his ‘phone-in’, Jeff ‘Cock A Doodle Doo’ Young, Peter Young, Tony Blackburn, Greg Edwards, Al Matthews, Nicky Campbell).

  1. And that – with all due thanks to Dave Lee for sourcing the missing copy of Record Mirror which had eluded us – is a wrap for 1986, the year that house broke big and hip hop opened a new chapter. Although 1988 is, of course, the “big ticket” year where so much changed, the two pivotal years for me personally were 1982 and 1986, and so it’s been pleasing to see dance music digging itself out of 1985’s hole of mediocrity, and mapping a new way forward.

At this point, I’d like to thank Jim Christie, now retiring from blogging duties, for all his hard work behind the scenes over the past four years. Jim was responsible for tracking down all of the source material, and he did by far the lion’s share of the transcripts from mid-1980 to the back end of 1985. The blog simply couldn’t have happened without him.

For the remainder of its lifespan, the blog will now become a one-man show, and I’ll endeavour to keep the posts coming as frequently as before. We’ll resume with 1987 in a week’s time – a year about which I have some theories, as yet untested by hard evidence. (And perhaps, next year, James will finally stop banging on about the injustices meted out to Alexander O’Neal’s “What’s Missing”!)

  2. Yes thanks for putting these up and keeping them going – it’s good to see how things really unfolded rather than relying on now pretty unclear memories. I did think once that it would be good to be able to look back at JH’s columns and then one day sure enough first on that now defunct disco blog and now on here my wish cane true.

    1. Huge thanks for posting this blog, as these charts were a massive part of my life in the 80s until 1989. Having gone through all the charts so far, I have found many, many tracks I had forgotten or didn’t know about, alongside the many 100s of records int hese charts that I still play today from my own record collection. I do hope you keep up the posting right to the very end – a big ask, but I’m so grateful this archive is now out there on-line for everyone to use.
