MORGAN KHAN has retained the label name StreetSounds (its parent company Brazendown Ltd being what filed for bankruptcy), and with new backing and a distribution deal via PRT intends to continue the label’s previous activities as of the end of this month, re-launching ‘Jazz Juice 4‘, ‘Hip Hop 16‘, another in the ‘Anthems’ series, and a new limited edition ‘StreetSounds Preview‘ series containing unreleased US masters, the new sister label equivalent of Streetwave being called (as hinted last week) Westside, although no releases are scheduled for that yet — his entire operation will be scaled down and starting as if from scratch, out of new smaller Ealing premises (which include a studio though), and so as not to dissipate his money and talent he has had to cancel the live rap festival UK Fresh ’87 after all … Germany’s BCM label has released a house Maxi-CD, ‘House Sound Of Chicago (CD Jack Attack)‘ (German DJ International Records D.J. 50-1007-44), containing Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley ‘Jack Your Body (Monty Remix)’, Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk & Jesse Saunders featuring Darryl Pandy ‘Love Can’t Turn Around (Farley Remix 2)’, Raze ‘Jack The Groove’, and the Mic Mac Meyers-mixed ‘The House Sound Of Chicago Megamix (Latin Mix)’ … LPs now out here include, from the same German source and here confusingly re-titled, the Trax Records double album compilation ‘The House Sound Of Your Guy‘ sounds like Jocelyn Brown ‘Somebody Else’s Guy’ with reason: now it’s no longer just on white label, I see it too was prod/penned by Allen George & Fred McFarlane (while in the US, on MCA, it’s already been remixed by Timmy Regisford) … Champion picked up True Mathematics, and – rather than their pop label, Polo – the blatantly Hi-NRG Paul Lekakis … TV-am’s daily play behind Mad Lizzy’s workouts would appear to have helped Judy Boucher’s chart climb, which proves it’s an MoR hit … Rough Trade will be reissuing next month CeIlulOid’s old catalogue, including the Fab 5 Freddy source of that much-scratched “fresh” … Kool & The Gang appear to be the Hot Chocolate of the Eighties (think about it!) … LAH DE DAH DE!

JUNIOR GEE & THE ‘A’ TEAM ‘The Terminator (Remix)’ (Fourth & Broadway 12BRWX 63)
Damon Rochefort’s reproduction of ‘The Terminator’ movie soundtrack is cut right down (minus all the amusing bits) in this UK rap’s rather brittle 96⅓bpm remix, with a spikily jittering new rhythm track and increased attention paid to Sharon Dee Clark’s ‘Mind Blowing Decisions’ hookline, plus some scratching by Chris Mackintosh, but for me its main appeal is now missing — even if it is allegedly better for dancefloors like this.

SYBIL ‘Let Yourself Go’ (Champion CHAMP 12-42)
Due here whenever Champion decide to switch from white label to full commercial availability, something they often delay for weeks if not months, this massive import smash is a haunting smoothly skittering and skipping soulfully warbled easily flowing flier in 121-120½-121¼-120½-120¼bpm Club and much more even 120¼bpm alternative Paradise Mixes, joined here by an 112½bpm remix of her older ‘Falling In Love’ hit.

PRINCE ‘Sign ‘O’ The Times’ LP (Paisley Park WX 88)
Still idiosyncratic though far more accessible than of late, this double LP’s dance tracks are the Paris-recorded live joyously bounding 114¾-114⅔-113-112-114-113⅔-113-113⅓bpm ‘It’s Gonna Be A Beautiful Night’ stomper, jauntily jumping 115¾-0bpm ‘Housequake‘ (actually led by someone called Camille with James Brown brass and paartaying background), lovely lazily swaying 63½-62½bpm ‘Slow Love‘, slinky chanting funk 109-108½bpm ‘Hot Thing‘, bouncily thudding 95½bpm ‘Strange Relationship‘, hoarsely strained tapping 120-0bpm ‘It‘, wailing vintage sweet soul-style 32-32¼/64½-0bpm ‘Adore‘, shuffling gently jogging Isleys-ish 102½bpm ‘The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker‘ (with wowing tones), fast striding rock (0-)122¼bpm ‘U Got The Look‘, and typically frantic (0-)197½-98¾-0bpm ‘Play In The Sunshine‘.

SWING OUT SISTER ‘Twilight World (Superb Superb Mix)’ (Mercury SWING 412)
Sade-ish smokily sophisticated classily trotting (0-)113bpm lush swayer with some late Seventies-style orchestral touches and a closing jazz-funk vibes break, all very pleasant though somehow insubstantial (edit flip, and similarly pitched 0-119¾bpm ‘Another Lost Weekend‘). How well will they do now it isn’t the post-Christmas lull?

JASON ‘Living My Life’ (US Easy Street EZS-7530)
Hollering and moaning in Colonel Abrams-ish style, this house tempoed beefily bounding 120⅔bpm nervy wriggler (in three main mixes) may not seem so hot at first but builds up quite a sweat and could be worth checking.

FULL HOUSE ‘Communicate’ (US D.J. International Records DJ 926)
Mixed in his mainstream house style by Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk, so familiar sounding already, this Danny Wilson & Richie Patterson-created slickly derivative (0-)118½bpm smooth vocal bounder should thus slot in easily (in three mixes).

HEAVY TRAFFIC STARRING “V” ‘Heavy Traffic Starring “V”‘ LP (Atlantic 781 682-1)
At last out here, the Brian Holland-produced strong voiced girl’s consistent set has her chunkily lurching 110bpm ‘Jealousy’ hit, the lovely soulfully saxed 0-98⅔bpm ‘Coming Down With Love‘, sleazily rolling 91bpm ‘You Can’t Hurt Me No More (It’s Gone With The Wind)‘, Randy Crawford-ish 0-33-65¾bpm ‘The Fire Is Gone‘ (promoed to DJs), lurching 108bpm ‘Deep In It‘, driving 113½bpm ‘Promises In The Dark‘, cranking 115¼bpm ‘Let’s Go Crazy (Let’s Get Lost In Love)‘, striding 108¼bpm ‘Hand Made Love‘, throbbing 108¼bpm ‘SOS (Help Me Boy)‘, slightly Madonna-ish 118½bpm ‘If You’re Gonna Mess With Me‘.

MIDNIGHT STAR ‘Wet My Whistle’ (MCA Records MCAT 1127)
I don’t know if it’s meant to be in the Solar oldies four-track series or just a regular follow-up, but this sparse slinky 113¾bpm chugger is joined by the vocodered electrophonic 0-120¼-120½bpm ‘Freakazoid’, soulfully nagging 100bpm ‘Curious’, and jittery go go-ish 0-103bpm ‘Headlines’ (in some unspecified mix).

BARBARA ROY ‘Gonna Put Up A Fight’ (RCA PT 49734)
Bad thinking to make here the sparsely episodic US-orientated Club Fight Version the A-side, when even the States used the more beefily direct Album Fight Version (now relegated to UK B-side) of this Paul Simpson-produced datedly wailed jiggly lurching 109bpm roller, in four mixes overall plus the striding jittery 112½bpm ‘Gotta See You Tonight‘.

THE MOVEMENT featuring Lee Genesis ‘Magic’ (US Underworld AP 128)
Produced by Tommy Musto for Northcott Prod Ltd, the same source as “Bam Boo”, this datedly souled 122-0bpm nervous skittery canterer is almost less house than northern soul, of the Ian Levine variety, melodically surging and leaping through three mixes to attractive effect.

FRANKIE KNUCKLES ‘You Can’t Hide’ (Up Beat PARTY T1)
Bowing in Portrait’s new dance label, this bassline prodded percussively pattering 120¼bpm house treatment of Teddy Pendergrass’s ‘You Can’t Hide From Yourself’ meant more on import in Hi-NRG clubs, and here is in Clubhouse, Dub and Radio Mixes.

BAILEY and BRIDGES ‘Come And Get It’ (Rhythm King LEFT 6T)
This nicely named Washington DC duo’s more disjointed though also more soulful lurching and jangling 107⅕bpm original version from last year (when on US Capital City Records) is now flip to a brand new neater 105-105¼bpm UK remix, a jittery swaying shudder in Full Circle style but still without much sustained actual song, the ingredients adding up to make a mood.

FINESSE & SYNQUIS ‘Bass Game’ (US MCA Records MCA-23731)
By a jauntily youthful Salt-n-Pepa style female rap duo with chattering chaps and bits from ‘The Champ’ and some familiar bass lines, this murkily juddering though bright 0-91⅓bpm rumbler is in three mixes (Radio 0-91⅔bpm), double A-sided with MARLEY MARL ‘He Cuts So Fresh’, an MC Shan-rapped 92¼bpm scratcher with Bobby Byrd’s “get on up” amongst much else (inst too), the originals of both sides being on the same Dr Jeckyll co-produced ‘Uptown Is Kickin’ It‘ LP as Heavy D & The Boyz.

T.C. ISLAM ‘Party Pooper’ (US Tri State Records KF 5002)
“There’s a brand new dance called the Party Pooper, check out my video and you can do it too”, raps T.C. to a jolying (0-)108bpm beat with Doc Scratch cutting in such tired old clichés as ‘The Champ’ and Bobby Byrd’s “get on up” yet again, flipped by the Jamaican accented lethargic 82bpm ‘On Time’, brief instrumental beats and a flashy short scratch of the one word ‘Her’.

MIKEY-D & THE L.A. POSSE ‘My Telephone’ (10 Records TENT 172)
Jaunty juddering 0-96⅓bpm narrative rap ‘n scratch in the Fresh Prince/Doug E Fresh style, moderately amusing although here it’s coupled with just the slower staccato 91⅓bpm ‘Bust A Rhyme Mike‘ (bonus beats too) and completely lacks the hilariously filthy ‘Dawn‘, which made the import so essential. Did 10 chicken out or will that be creatively marketed later?

STETSASONIC ‘Go Stetsa I (Remix)’ (WEA U8375T)
Tommy Boy’s in-house hip hoppers rap, chant ‘n scratch a beefy 100¾bpm lurcher that rocks the joint (in three versions), with an edit of their current LP’s title track as flip, the good 82bpm ‘On Fire‘.

COMPANY B ‘Fascinated’ (Bluebird Records BRT 35)
Although its Florida origins have made it massive in the currently Miami-fixated US dance market, this keen voiced girl squawked and perpetually scrubbing synth nagged old fashioned simple rattling 119¼bpm “disco” thudder is better than most and could have Madonna-ish commercial appeal here (in four mixes).

BILLY GRIFFIN ‘The Girl Is Fine (Remix)’ (Atlantic A9275T)
Disappointingly undistinctive considering the ex-Miracle’s memorable hits like ‘Hold Me Tighter In The Rain’, this cramped frenetic (0-)115½-0bpm jitterer is dominated by its busy rhythm track and could be by anyone, with an equally rhythm orientated stark lurching 107bpm remix of ‘ESP‘ as flip.

STARPOINT ‘He Wants My Body’ (US Elektra 0-66824)
Shrilly squawked dreadful disjointed (0-)116¼-116-116¼-116bpm jerky jitterer with muttering chatter and yowling rock guitar (in three versions), a total non-starter on import but mailed on promo to DJs and actually scheduled soon for UK release (EKR55T).

RAZE ‘Jack Up Work Your Body’ (US Grove St. GSR-009)
Ben Epps-created interminable wriggling 120⅔bpm routine jack track of no great distinction, rather a disappointment, friskiest in the 120½bpm flip’s For Tony H’s Piano Love mix (Tom Tom Mix too).

CHRIS HILL and Robbie Vincent (glimpsed behind him) head-line a huge array of DJs, and such artistes as Roy Ayers and Mason, at Live Wire’s four day Easter weekender in Prestatyn (about 50 last minute places left on 01-364 1212). For the hordes who may be heading into virgin territory, here are your special cut-out-and-keep advance directions!

London to Prestatyn is an easy motorway drive which in a fast car shouldn’t take much more than three hours, holiday traffic delays permitting, on the M1, M6, M56 (follow signs hard left for Runcorn and Chester, as North Wales stops being clearly signposted at just this one vital junction, Exit 9 — confusingly the second Exit 9 on the M6, coming after Exit 19), then from the end of the M56 it’s dual carriageway straight through past Queensferry to the A55, where the final 25 miles or so become the only two-way traffic.

Keep your eyes peeled on the A55 for signs to Prestatyn and neighbouring Rhyl as I’m not sure how well advanced are the new bypass roadworks around Holywell, but it’s in this area that you’ll be turning off towards the right: either through Holywell itself on the B5121 or AS026 to join the dull A548 coast road, which brings you straight into the Pontins end of Prestatyn, or else after Holywell on the more scenic A5151, turning right and right again in Dyserth to join the A547 (for the truly scenic route, however, in the hills after Trelawnyd on the A5151, hang a sharp right up minor roads through Gwaenysgor, past the duck pond, and then check your brakes before plummeting down into Prestatyn, with a dramatic view of Pontins ahead as you go over the edge!).
