2 PUERTO RICANS, A BLACKMAN AND A DOMINICAN have created quite a rumpus as their ‘Do It Properly!’ slots samples from other house hits into what’s basically Adonis ‘No Way Back’ — and that latter will soon be released here commercially by London with their version on the legal flip, but here called ‘The Adonis Bootleg’ … Steve Walsh has reassembled all the original members of Freeez, apart from John Rocca, to remake ‘Southern Freeez 87’ for his Total Control Records, now with four new “freeze” pauses prompted vocally by Steve himself on the flip’s Avenger Mix in an attempt to make the old Rodney Franklin-started dance craze a summer hit again … Sybil ‘Let Yourself Go’ (actually rather reminiscent of ‘Southern Freeez’, isn’t it?) is being creatively marketed as a remixed 120½bpm Champion Mix (Champion CHAMPX 12-42), with conversational chat at the start followed by almost more digital chipmunks than proper singing … Swing Out Sister’s ‘Twilight World’, bouncing back into our Disco chart, is also in a new 0-113bpm Outer Limits Mix (Mercury SWING 422), with a dialogue-like diatribe break usefully early on, while Dancin’ Danny D’s 119¾-0bpm Observation Mix of Patrice Rushen ‘Watch Out’ (Arista RIST 12R), as warned, adds clodhopping almost Hi-NRG percussion to destroy the original’s delightful airiness, and Frankie Knuckles ‘You Can’t Hide From Yourself’ (here given its proper full title) is also in the dubbier chugging 121-0bpm Chip E’s House Remix (Portrait PARTY Q1) … Peggi Blu actually had a theatrical training, appearing as a child in ‘The Wiz’, and recorded a disco album on MCA Records in 1980, although currently her success in the States is as a multi-winner of TV’s ‘Star Search’ talent contest, like Durrell Coleman and Sam Harris — let’s hope her fame is less meteoric than theirs … Susie Barnes may find she has a hard act to follow on her return from an around the world trip, as in her absence Dave Pearce has been turning Radio London’s weekday afternoons into the best and most crucial daily soul show on radio … ‘Solid Soul’ has begun taping its new season of 18 shows for Channel 4, ultra smart dancers (who said posers?) being able to apply for tickets in person at Concorde House, 1 Barb Mews, Brook Green, Hammersmith … Robbie Dee is still taking entries at Southend-on-Sea’s Rain Discotheque (0702-333277) for the remaining Wednesday heats of a Disco Dance Competition 1987, the £250 first prize final being on May 20 … Concorde Artistes are promising a cleaner Miss Wet T-Shirt Contest for this its tenth year of touring UK clubs, with less female flesh and more T-shirt on show under the shower, huge new video monitors allegedly making up for this! CHRIS BROWN, contrary to rumours, is still spinning his inimitable soul and jazz at Ascot’s Belvedere, but on Wednesday nights rather than at Sunday lunchtimes, which are the popular sessions that had to be discontinued due to their very popularity … the neighbours were complaining about all the illegal parking!

MACEO & THE MACKS ‘Cross The Track (We Better Go Back)’ (Urban URBX 1, via Polydor)
At last legally available, in an extended Simon Harris re-edit to boot, the James Brown-produced saxist and his band’s extremely nagging see-sawing jiggly old funker has a mind numbing repetitive piping siren-like tone and girls ‘n’ guys-alternated chants, making it by far the biggest record at Prestatyn as well as of course (in its also included basically 101⅓-103½-102¾-102⅓-102⅔bpm original seven inch version) the hottest “rare groove” bootleg for the last few months. In monitoring the extended version I actually logged 28 shifts in the Beats Per Minutes, fluctuating around 100¼-103¾bpm at both extremes but which I averaged at 100⅘bpm (not that it’s ever exactly that)! In addition the 12 inch includes the “parrty”-chanting wicky wacky 106-104½-105bpm ‘Soul Power 74‘ sax instrumental and, likewise from 1973, the title-chanting burbling afro-flavoured steady 114bpm ‘Parrty – Part 1‘. Party hardy, y’all!

LILLO THOMAS ‘I’m In Love (Longer Love Mix)’ (Capitol 12CL 450)
Considerably beefed up from his hot LP version with overdubbed rhythmic human bass and a tabla break — to the regret of some although I think it’s really bright now — this rolling and soaring 114-0bpm chugger (in three mixes) isn’t due fully for over a week but is too big a secret to keep until then!

VOICES IN THE DARK ‘Keep It Warm (Remix)’ (Champion CHAMP 12-46)
Gradually unfurling through chipmunk effects, remixed specially for the UK from the less good import, this shrilly nagging girls sung and sax squalled, chiming 115½-114¾bpm shuffling strider has the simple dated appeal of a ‘Ring My Bell’ and could easily now cross over (Edit/lnstrub flip).

NORWOOD ‘Can’t Let You Go’ LP (US Magnolia Sound MCA-5897)
Already massive on import, this impressive strong throaty often gospel-style soul set by Philadelphia’s green-eyed Teddy/Colonel/Luther-ish Norwood B. Young has the Nick Martinelli-tempoed 92⅔bpm ‘Should Have Been Us Together’, sensuous 0-91½bpm ‘I Can’t Live Without You‘, 12 inched intense 101⅔bpm title track, bounding 114bpm ‘Lady In Love‘, urgent 115⅔bpm ‘Give It Up‘, jerky 0-120¼bpm ‘Feels So Good‘, romantic 0-31-63¾-0bpm ‘Glad I Found You’ and 40½/81bpm ‘Come Back My Lover’.

THE WHISPERS ‘Just Gets Better With Time’ (US Solar ST-72554)
Now long since broken with the past tradition that always seemed to find a new Whispers album on import just before Christmas, the guys have made this one worth the wait! An excellent soul dancer is the Leon Sylvers-produced tightly jittery drifting 107⅚bpm ‘Special F/X’ with “whoa-oh” audience chants built in, while the only really uptempo tracks are the jaggedly lurching Larry White-produced 119½bpm ‘I Want You‘ and the 12 inched typical 116⅓bpm ‘Rock Steady‘, superb slowies being the swaying (0-)87bpm title track, mellow 73½bpm ‘In The Mood‘, (0-)61bpm ‘Love’s Calling’, 63⅔bpm ‘Give It To Me’, jogging (0-)98⅚bpm ‘No Pain, No Gain’.

ARNOLD JARVIS ‘Take Some Time Out’ (US Fourth Floor Records NCP 287)
From the same Tommy Musto co-created source as ‘Bam Boo’ and selling for several weeks, this interestingly atmospheric 119¼bpm sparsely tripping and shuffling wriggly moaner may have some of house’s trappings but is much more like soul than a jack track (dub flip).

STRAFE ‘Outlaw’ (US A&M SP-12233)
Initially about on seven inch with the self-produced chattering and burbling ‘Set It Off’-ish 115½bpm ‘Strafe’s Groove’ as flip (which will be on the UK 12 inch), the Arthur Baker-produced leaping jittery rhythmically Janet-ish 0-116⅔bpm galloper starts with a Steinski-type cut up of John Wayne and other dialogue, and is more of a muttering groove than a song, in four mixes —and here’s the big switcheroo, the main A-side version plus a dub are billed as UK Mixes, by none other than Les Adams! He’ll be wearing a ten gallon hat after this!

LIVING IN A BOX ‘Living In A Box’ LP (Chrysalis CDL 1547)
Combining hints of ABC, Level 42, Bobby Womack and more, this Richard James Burgess-produced Sheffield trio have certainly created a commercial fusion, most truly soulful being the 75bpm ‘From Beginning To End’, tugging 101bpm ‘So The Story Goes‘, lurching 0-66bpm ‘Can’t Stop The Wheel‘, joined by the jolting 96bpm ‘Human Story‘, galloping (0-)123½bpm ‘Love Is The Art‘, urgent 119bpm ‘Generate The Wave‘, jittery 112¼bpm ‘Scales Of Justice‘, Mel & Kim-ish 121¾bpm ‘Going For The Big One‘.

SLY & ROBBIE ‘Rhythm Killers’ LP (Fourth & Broadway BRLP 512)
Bill Laswell produced this continuously segued suite in his Material, or more specifically Shango, style to make It maybe more of an intellectual exercise than a stone gas for the floor. The 103⅔bpm side one drifts through their reworking of the Ohio Players’ ‘Fire’, the ‘White Lines’-ish ‘Boops‘ and jerkily kicking ‘Let’s Rock‘, side two being 90⅙bpm for Lee Dorsey’s ‘Yes We Can Can‘ and the reggae ‘Rhythm Killer‘ before sliding up into the again ‘Boops’-ish 100¼bpm ‘Bank Job‘ — possibly the next best dance track, sorta ‘Peter Gunn’ meets ‘Let’s Start The Dance’ in places.

KING SUN-D MOET ‘Hey Love’ (Flame Records MELT 5T)
Already technically deleted here as its US label Zakia has lust done a deal with Profile in the States, who now want much more money for the UK rights, this lazily drawled sinuous 86½-0bpm jiggler is intriguingly different, being realistically conversational (including a phone call) and addressed to the girl who also loves the speaker’s brother (in three versions).

JOCELYN BROWN ‘One From The Heart’ LP (Warner Bros 925 445-1)
Disappointing slowies orientated set mainly produced by Jellybean, just the sinuously weaving quite jauntily typical (although almost Randy Crawford accented) 103bpm ‘Caught In The Act’ and swaying soulful 93⅚bpm ‘I Cry Real Tears‘ getting DJ attention.

THE RAPPIN’ REVEREND ‘I Ain’t Into That’ (US Fantasy D-281)
Already a talking point that’s much played on radio (mainly for novelty value), the rappin’ Dr C Dexter Wise III plaintively lists all the bad habits he ain’t into before delineating the alternative praiseworthy pursuits he most definitely is into, to softly cooing gospel girls and a gently jittery Timmy Thomas-ish (0-)87½bpm swaying beat. The Beastie Boys he ain’t, praise the Lord!

PLEASURE PUMP ‘Fantasize Me’ (US State Street Records SSR 1003)
Building support over several weeks now, this girls cooed sprightly light 121 bpm buoyant bass driven bounding canterer (in four mixes) has much of Sybil’s haunting flavour within more of a house framework — although, make no mistake, it’s a fully fledged proper song.

FIRST CIRCLE ‘Miracle Worker (Extended Mix)’ (EMI America 12EA 232)
Full Circle that were have had to change their name so as not to clash with an obscure Boston jazz band. Rather than their LP’s Luther-cloning ‘In The Name Of Love’ hit we now get Randy Muller’s slippery remix of this typical (for him) pent-up (0-) 108bpm slinky roller with possibly too many digital chipmunks (in three mixes).
